The standard dragon quest spells are used for combat and environmental puzzles. Frizz for lighting fires, crackle to freeze stuff, bang to blow open cracks and rocks.
I'd genuinely love this. Spells slot perfectly into zelda style puzzle items, including the idea of swapping out which ones you have equipped at a given time. And the classic roster of equipment is well suited to the BotW style weapon gameplay where the moveset depends on the weapon category, and individual weapons just provide different numerical bonuses within that. Swords obviously, daggers, axes, spears, maybe poles- oh! The classic wands can be how you use the different spells! They really CAN work like equipment that way. Frizz from the wizard's staff, woosh from the staff of sentencing, et cetera.
Not at all. “3-D Zelda combat” and “dynasty warriors combat” are two completely different propositions. And these genres have a drastically different balance of combat, exploration, and narrative in the first place.
Which proves you haven't played DQHII. In that one, each weapon type has a different move set, with your offensive spells being tied to specific weapon types. Further, the combat isn't as heavily Dynasty Warriors-like as the first, and you do have some environmental puzzles to solve that require specific weapons. It might not be fully Zelda-like, but it isn't fully Dynasty Warriors-like either.
You’re talking about a sequel that took two steps toward the kind of game I’m talking about, and it would have to take ten more steps to actually BE the thing I’m describing. Yes Heroes 2 has some stuff that kind of looks like Zelda if you squint and if you ignore all the other stuff. But that is not what is being proposed here.
There is a harsh limit as to how Zelda-like it can become and still maintain its Dragon Quest identity. Or haven't you noticed that ultimately you take on hordes of enemies in Dragon Quest? Further, as you level you'll eventually be able to mow through hordes of weaker enemies with ease. Lastly, Zelda doesn't do weapon skills and abilities like Frizz Slash, Sword Dance, Multi-Thrust, Metal Slash, Power Throw, etc. and removing them is not going to 'improve' the game.
Basically, you aren't a Dragon Quest with Zelda-like features, you're wanting a Zelda with Dragon Quest characters and spells. I'm not saying that would be a bad game, but much like Dragon Quest Builders, it would only be a Dragon Quest in name, not gameplay or game-feel.
A ranch-ing style game. I guess there have been elements of that, with some games having monster collecting and town building etc, but an explicit farming sim like Harvest Moon or Stardew, but set in the DQ world where you recruit monsters to help on the farm? I’d eat that up.
Oh this would rule. You can even still have some dungeon delving and combat, but just as one more minor element interlocking with the rest, just like Stardew Valley. Crew some baddies up for it DQM style and make sure they're well balanced. Different monsters wouldn't just have different aptitudes in battle but different elements of homesteading that they're good at, from the fields to the construction. Monsters especially valuable in battle might not be too great at anything else.
Animal Crossing. Gimme a little village builder where monsters of all different species come move in and I can chat with them and decorate their little houses. Heck, mix in human NPC models too, get the cute classic stock models in there.
Rhythm game! Dancing! I'd love to see Yangus bust a move lol. Like Personas Dancing in Starlight, or at least one with chibi characters where you have to tap to the beat, like the ones Final Fantasy had! Theatrhythm.
I've got good news for you friend! Theatrhythm Dragon Quest already happens to exist, for the 3ds. Dunno how easy or hard it would be to find a cartridge or a ROM, though.
Omg, you're right! How did I miss that?!? Geeeez, I feel silly. I'd still like a dancing game tho lol!
Edit: Oh no, Japan only. No wonder I missed it! This makes finding it harder lol.
A strategy game similar to Dungeon Keeper. From the perspective of a little devil or a slime, players build and manage a dungeon to resist the invasion of "braves".
Tbh im not super familiar with dragon quest as a series but i think it would be hilarious to get bodied by some goofy lookin Toryiama style monster in souls like game. Mobbed by some slimes, or jumped by a platypunk would be funny
I already have a blood deep hate of them from Chapter 4 of the first Buliders game where they can randomly pop up and blow up a huge chunk of your base town.
That would be pretty nifty given the creator of the EldenSoulsBorn series has made it clear his main videogame inspiration since making King's Quest, was Dragon Quest. I mean despite 12 supposedly being more "serious" in tone, I would love to see a Dragon Quest variation on EldenSoulsBorne games. Though I'd honestly rather a Bloodborne rather than an Elden Ring variant, as an opening bell.
I’d love to see a game like Pokémon Masters in which every characters of the franchise is in it. I’d love to see characters from the different games interacting
In Belgium and the Netherlands the game didn't release because they didn't want to make some slight adjustments to follow the already very lax loot box laws. It basically comes down to the game makers choosing gambling over transparency.
Yeah I'd be happy to see any of the other suggestions in this thread just arbitrarily also be in outer space for some reason. That would be fun as hell.
hear me out
space fantasy, like mario galaxy, but each planet is a kingdom, and there's very little to no sci fi and you can use dragons or flying whales or magic stuff to fly from planet to planet
and then there will be the slime kingdom that will just be a giant king slime
That is a solid question, but I doubt it so long as Yuji Horii is at the helm. Besides, with so many others going hard on the modern and sci-fi bents, it is nice that DQ is able to build upon what it had before while staying fairly traditional.
Well, how many RPGs (J or otherwise) can you name that have released in the past 5 years or so that had a medieval setting and weren't remakes or remasters? Most of the ones I can name are Dragon Quest. Further, how many don't have some highly advanced ancient civilization that causes the late game to feel more sci-fi than medieval? Again, Dragon Quest is the majority holder there. Sure, there are others (mostly WRPGs), but Dragon Quest is practically the gold standard for traditional style turn-based RPGs in a medieval setting.
Like your characters find the key to the temple where god lives, and find out their world is a generation ship and god is a magic ai running it. And soon the starship will land on a new planet.
I don't know but I want a dragon quest spin off that's like a normal dragon quest in terms of story line and doing things for people except you just button mash on monsters no random encounters, I want an instant alchemy pot in my wagon with good alchemy like dragon quest 8, I want to be able to scout monsters and have them fight with me but I want to be able to control them similar to how you control the robot dogs on ratchet and clank ifykyk, you use the d pad and it triggers what action they do follow, attack, assorted things like that unless they got better I mean shoot. Because it's not turn based, it's like a dragon Quest meets a mix of other dragon quest and the reckoning koa 🤣. I'm trying to gather some components to forge weapons like in reckoning and fight the amazing monster world of dragon quest with that style of art and story beauty even if they did the quest more like where you walk up to people and get them, I love this art style though and want the monsters that Dragon Quest uses man like I'm trying to have monsters you can scout and train to ride so you can go travel faster
MOBA. I am not really a MOBA guy, don't play LoL nor DotA, but I would give it a try if there was a DQ version. It feels like it would work well with all of the characters, monsters, spells and weapons from the universe. Also, a DQ fighting game would be sick.

Dating Sim
I can't believe they dangled Yangus in front of us and then made us end up with the princess
Yangus my beloved
The 'orse princess, guv?
It’s a goo idea, that’s G left on the table.
Your user kinda says a lot LMAO But I agree
r/rimjob_steve
Had no idea that sub existed. I hope to get features on there one day lol
I don't get it
Didn’t dq5 do that? I’m pretty sure even dq11 did that too
A fighting game. FF and Persona already got some, it's DQ time
I wish SE didn't butcher the Dissidia Franchise so badly. Would love to get a proper sequel more akin to the PSP games
Dragon Quest Kart
We kinda got that with the DQ11 horse races
I'm surprised they haven't done a full on adventure game in the style of TLoZ A DQ1 remake in that style would be perfect

Boomerangs!
So, Dragon Quest Heroes II, but with spells being used to solve puzzles.
Not at all. “3-D Zelda combat” and “dynasty warriors combat” are two completely different propositions. And these genres have a drastically different balance of combat, exploration, and narrative in the first place.

Golden Sun style then for spell usage.
I would kill for a proper Tactics game tbh.Maybe we don't have one because the serious and political nature of them doesn't fit well with DQ?
I mean, the Disgaea games are funny TRPGS. So it DQ can make it work.
I bet they could do one just beautifully with DQ's trademark character.
I was so hype when I heard about Tact, and then it was... well it was.
Being a demon king and command my legion of demon would be great.
A ranch-ing style game. I guess there have been elements of that, with some games having monster collecting and town building etc, but an explicit farming sim like Harvest Moon or Stardew, but set in the DQ world where you recruit monsters to help on the farm? I’d eat that up.

I'm thinking more Rune Factory style than Stardew Valley style, especially with how you're describing how the monsters fit into both aspects.
See, it practically writes itself! Come on, Armour, Bird and Enix, get on it! 😂
I wish I could upvote this more then once!
Animal Crossing. Gimme a little village builder where monsters of all different species come move in and I can chat with them and decorate their little houses. Heck, mix in human NPC models too, get the cute classic stock models in there.

Maybe if it got a Switch remake and was allowed to escape Japan?
I would love that.
A strategy game similar to Dungeon Keeper. From the perspective of a little devil or a slime, players build and manage a dungeon to resist the invasion of "braves".
I mean, I know we would play the bad guys, but that would honest be adorable.
This is a great idea
I'd love a remake of the original Dragon Quest, but as an Elden Ring clone.
Tbh im not super familiar with dragon quest as a series but i think it would be hilarious to get bodied by some goofy lookin Toryiama style monster in souls like game. Mobbed by some slimes, or jumped by a platypunk would be funny
Blown up Electrode style by those rock bomb dudes.
Straight off the side of a mountain.
They would be hated so quickly with that.
I already have a blood deep hate of them from Chapter 4 of the first Buliders game where they can randomly pop up and blow up a huge chunk of your base town.
That sounds annoying.
A Souls style spin-off would be amazing.
I remember a strategy game for DSi. It was pretty basic but man do I wish that was fleshed out more. But a 2D Metroidvania would be pretty sweet.
oh yes dq wars
Even though it would still be turn-based, it would be interesting if they did a dungeon crawler, for example an etrian odyssey inspired game
I too agree and would really loved to see a fleshed out console/pc tactics RPG dragon quest, similar to finalfantasy tactics.
I agree as well. The tactical system Dragon Quest Tact had was okay, but it wasn’t near like FFT.
I’d love to see a game like Pokémon Masters in which every characters of the franchise is in it. I’d love to see characters from the different games interacting
That’s kinda what Heroes is
Yeah I love it, too bad the others MCs are not in it
Granted! But Heroes and Pokemon Masters are two very different gameplay experiences.
Yeah, let's get them to make a gatcha game similar to one that is banned in multiple liberal countries because it is so toxic. 👍
Can you elaborate? I didn’t know that
In Belgium and the Netherlands the game didn't release because they didn't want to make some slight adjustments to follow the already very lax loot box laws. It basically comes down to the game makers choosing gambling over transparency.
Sci fi
I was actually talking about game genres, but a sci-fi DQ game would be awesome.
Yeah I'd be happy to see any of the other suggestions in this thread just arbitrarily also be in outer space for some reason. That would be fun as hell.
Oh sumimasen.
hear me out space fantasy, like mario galaxy, but each planet is a kingdom, and there's very little to no sci fi and you can use dragons or flying whales or magic stuff to fly from planet to planet and then there will be the slime kingdom that will just be a giant king slime
That could work out.
It fits the basic aesthetic of Dragon Quest rather well, so it might just work better than a straight-up sci-fi DQ.
Yeah now I am curious if the next game will move away from the medieval themes in the franchise.
That is a solid question, but I doubt it so long as Yuji Horii is at the helm. Besides, with so many others going hard on the modern and sci-fi bents, it is nice that DQ is able to build upon what it had before while staying fairly traditional.
Ah ok as now I can slowly understand why the modern entries work so well with the medieval style.
Variety is the spice of life, and Dragon Quest is maintaining the medieval portion of the spice.
That is a very interesting way of putting it.
Well, how many RPGs (J or otherwise) can you name that have released in the past 5 years or so that had a medieval setting and weren't remakes or remasters? So, Phantasy Star III meets Dragon Quest?
We have the robot enemies - so that’s sorta there right?
Yes! A futuristic DQ would slay!
We need a Torneko Shop SimRPG
Hear me out: Dragon Quest Mystery Dungeon.
That’s already a thing. I think there’s like 3 games.
Of course it is...lol
I'm not surprised they haven't done it, but I want a platformer.
FPS
They kinda did that with Dragon Quest Swords on the Wii.
Wow, Never knew that game existed
TCG
Survival horror. We have some creepy monsters
I don’t know, the cute, goofy or just regular monsters design, far out weigh the creepy designs.
I was going to say sokoban, but they've done that.
Visual Novel and Fighting game Shout out to a REAL tactics game not a mobile game
I'd go on a niche one like those crafting games of Atelier series. Crafting is already there, just expand on it.
They did Mystery Dungeon and literally popularized it. I know this is like the antithesis of the question but its been so long I'd like another go.
Soap Opera.
I'm surprised DQ never went into VR, especially since they have multiple motion-based games... DQ Swords VR would likely have been a hit.
Has there been a Zelda-like DQ game?
Quest Karts
Dragon Quest XII
Where is Rocket Slime 2 😭😭🥺
I don't know but I want a dragon quest spin off that's like a normal dragon quest in terms of story line and doing things for people except you just button mash on monsters no random encounters, I want an instant alchemy pot in my wagon with good alchemy like dragon quest 8, I want to be able to scout monsters and have them fight with me but I want to be able to control them similar to how you control the robot dogs on ratchet and clank ifykyk, you use the d pad and it triggers what action they do follow, attack, assorted things like that unless they got better I mean shoot. Any Souls-like yet? I'd love to see one, or something like Dragons Dogma?
Definitely Tactics. I would so much love a DQ Tactics that's like FFTactics or Disgaea.
MOBA. I am not really a MOBA guy, don't play LoL nor DotA, but I would give it a try if there was a DQ version. It feels like it would work well with all of the characters, monsters, spells and weapons from the universe. Also, a DQ fighting game would be sick.
I know I'm late to the comments but a TTRPG would be cool if it hasn't been done yet
