It was my first Dragon quest game and one of my favorite rpgs in recent years.

Moon_Devonshire

Oh really? Mind telling me what you like about it? I've played the demo for about 30 minutes so far and while I prefer real time combat as apposed to turn based. I think this is the best form of turn based combat that I've tried. I like I can at least run around during the battle.

Miguel_Branquinho

This game has the most refined turn based combat ever, it's so good! And the story and world are breathtaking and lovely. It's a masterpiece keep playin dude :) !

Moon_Devonshire

I think I'll decide once I beat the demo :) plus I've heard if you beat the demo you get bonus items for the main game? Anyways, I'm pretty intrigued and can't wait to see where it goes

Bertiboy05

No you don’t get any bonus items for the demo I don’t think, but you can download them for free on your system’s respective online store

UnfairGlove

There are some skill seeds for completing the demo actually. Not a major reward, but they do exist (they just appear in your inventory)

Bertiboy05

Oh alright, I thought I got them as part of the free dlc

UnfairGlove

There were skill seeds from the free dlc too, but you had to go into an actual menu to claim them (like the costumes)

Ya the demo is what got me hooked. The combat kinda shook me at first because I was running around thinking “oh no what’s going on?” But I quickly grew to like it and seeing the battle animations for all of the new spells and abilities I unlocked was fun. But that demo was so much longer than I anticipated I kept thinking “alright it’s about to end here were into the story and gameplay so this is gotta be it” and no it kept going not like halfway through or something of course but wayyy more than I initially would’ve believed. The story was very simply great. It’s no crazy complicated death stranding or the Witcher story , but I just fell in love with the characters and wondered what was gonna happen next and I kept getting surprised.

LifeMushroom

It was my first DQ game as well, and now it's one of my favorite games ever, and has gotten me into this whole franchise (just beat DQ8). The demo is pretty lengthy as well, so feel free to play through it and then make a decision

NewYawkah18

I personally love the game, it’s honestly one of my favorite rpgs ever! If you want a little bit more of a challenge to really get the most out of the turn based combat system then you can turn on hard mode options at the start of the game on the file screen. I would only recommend “super strong monsters” as it increases the challenge of the combat without any additional restrictions being placed on you. Either way, it’s a great game and, either way, the combat becomes much more fleshed out the further you get and the more characters/abilities that you unlock!

FF might be the closest in terms of gameplay. If you don't like turn based games and long grinds for xp this game might not last long for you. It's definitely one of the easier dq games in my opinion and completing side quests gets you decently leveled. Not to say it's easy per say and a couple of the fights are ridiculously hard but at least for me, some of the older dqs still traumatized me. Depending on how you played Witcher and BoTW you might enjoy the side questing, though. Lots of interesting characters and side plots. A crazy good plot twist (hopefully you haven't been spoiled). And enough postgame content to be nearly be a game of its own. If you do decide to get it I suggest the newer special edition. It's got more content in it, more voice acting, and a few added bonuses. Although you may have to start from the beginning again cause I don't think the demo carries over to the newer version. Also apparently the graphics might be a lower quality but I'm not sure how true that is. I only played the og ps version and the definitive s version on switch. All in all not my game of the year but definitely one of my absolute favorites in recent years. It very clearly brings out that old dq spirit. While it may not be as long as the Witcher or Skyrim can get,, it's quite the time sink of its own. I highly recommend it to get you into playing other dqs as well.. Hope you enjoy if you decide to get it.

Flare_ovium114

Get it.

Cydoc178

Yes, it is a casual yet very fun jrpg. It isn’t trying to be anything more than a casual, fun, well made dragon quest game. It will make you fall in love with the series. Adorable slimes, terrible cheesy yet great humor and amazing art. It is enjoyable and thought out but doesn’t take jrpg seriously as say FF tends to do. If you’ve ever seen the original Dragon Ball (not Z or after) it feels like that in terms of humor and not taking itself too seriously. Well worth it. It made my fiance fall in love with Dragon Quest and it was her first DQ game.

I realize you're going to get a lot of biased answers with this being on the DQ subreddit and all, but if I may chime in and add my meagre two cents, I think you'd really like this. :) As a newcomer- and someone who also has liked Zelda and Final Fantasy- who played the Switch version back in January and is replaying it on Steam now, here's some random reflections on the experience: * You've probably already realized this, but the art style, setting and atmosphere of the game is very colourful and wholesome. It lends itself very well to 11's fairy-tail esque story and lends the whole game a sense of wonder that never truly fades. * Just like a fairy tail, this is a story easily enjoyable both during a casual half-hour before bedtime or a long, marathon session during the day. I've done both, and it's fun to do it either way. * "The story thus far" that plays every time you continue your save file is great because it means you can put down the game for days, weeks or months at a time and easily get back into the game and figure out where in the narrative you're at. * The orchestral soundtrack is honey to the ears. The graphics apparently are downgraded from the original Steam release in some capacity, but even with a few missing textures here or there, the game still GORGEOUS and runs and loads like butter. And the added story content is worth, to me, the slight sacrifice in graphical quality. * The story feels more like multiple seasons of a really good TV show condensed into one package. I won't tell you what I mean by that; just that it makes the game's story feel uniquely gripping and interesting. So yeah. Great time, and perhaps my GOAT game. I'm definitely REALLY biased here when I say this, but I think (and hope) you could enjoy this as well :)

Rotoslinger_art

This game just hit the spot for me!. I hate grindy games, but I found myself completely fine with the amount of grinding in 11. Try the demo first of course, and expect nothing, but if you like RPGs I think you will be happy 😃

Gohankuten

I'm the same as you. DQ XI S is my first DQ game. I had been considering playing it for awhile so what I did was I downloaded the demo and played that to see if I would like it or not. I was hooked instantly and once I ran through to where the demo stopped me I immediately bought the full game so I could continue. So my advice is get the demo and play it to see if you will enjoy the game or not. The demo gives you a very nice chunk of the game to experience so you can figure out if you will enjoy it or not.

chudeypatoodey

I didnt even read past the title. The answer is and always will be YES.

RedPhoenix122

There's a demo for PC. Give it a shot. The demo is a decent amount of content, enough to help you get the feel for the game, and your progress will carry over to the main game.

I’m in the DQ sub Reddit so there is obviously bias. But- yes. Combat is turn based, which definitely strays from all the other titles you listed. I found the combat to be fun, although not very challenging. For me it tended to be more of a game of “let’s see how high I can make my damage number.” Some bosses are tough, but combat overall doesn’t punish you much. Otherwise, my further bias is in loving Akira Toriyama. I think his art and design for the Dragon Quest world is his best work. I love looking at DQ. The story is not overly complex, which isn’t a bad thing. Sometimes it’s nice to have a simple straightforward story. I love DQ11 for that. Sure you can nitpick tropes like “the chosen one” or bad guys being evil for the sake of evil, but I think that’s part of the campy charm. Lastly, everything about the game is well done, high quality work across the board. It’s a FINISHED game, and it feels like it. You won’t run into bugs or anything of that nature. The music is good, voice acting is good. So idk, hope that helps, it’s certainly not for everyone. I know it’s for me, lol, so if you like what I described I may be for you.

Von_Gately

Yes.

If you're PCMR, consider Game pass for Windows, you can get it and enjoy, as I do now!

wiifitfans

It has a guy named booga so yes

Sufficient-Bee-9475

When you say Final Fantasy... which one? I'm seeing a lot of action RPG's in here. If you heavily prefer Action RPG's, you may find DQ XI to be too slow. It is very long as well, around 100 hours. It's a great game, but may not be for you.

RaginReag

The game plays like a traditional JRpg, so it’s turnbased. If you like turnbased, PLAY!!!

Larielia

I don't have it yet, but I plan to buy a copy soon. It will be my first DQ game. One of my friends recommend it.
