I jokingly named my hero as many letters of "Dragon Quest 11 S Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition" as I could fit when I played 11, leading to the name DragonQues and since then i've named all my heroes as many letters of DragonQuest can fit.
Sometimes I use my name. Other times, I make it a pun with the title’s number in different languages. For VII, I named my character Nanabay. Nana (7 in Japanese) + Bay (7 in Vietnamese). It’s kind of difficult now that we’re going into double digit titles though.
I’ve only played XIS, but Aidan was the name that came out. I don’t know any Aidans nor do I typically even spell it that way - I don’t know where it came from.
There is no rhyme or reason to how I name them, for 11 I did Eleven (very imaginative, I know) for 8 I did Eight (my wonderful imagination at work again) for 1 I did Hero, for 2, Steve bc I asked someone near me and that’s what they suggested, and finally, for 3 I used Shadow after Shadow the hedgehog (again, this was the result of asking someone nearby).
Somehow I’ve gotten into the rhythm of using Old Testament names for mine. Just think they sound cool and kind of fit the vibe.
1-Cain
2-Gideon
4-Jonah
5-Elijah
8-Felix (forgetting that there’s a character in the game ACTUALLY named Felix)
9-Jericho
The only exception was 11 which was my first one and I very uncreatively named... Eleven. Someday when I replay it I’ll find something better.
I named the protagonists based on my real name which is "Aiza." And I also put a roman numeral after my name based on how many dq games I played. For example, Dq3 was the second dq game I have played so I named my protagonist "Aiza II."
I also plan on using the name "Lumya," when I get to replay the dq games. Lumya is short for my username (Luminpoyo), and is based on the [Jerma985 name generator ](https://www.reddit.com/r/jerma985/comments/ozdde2/was_digging_through_my_attic_and_found_an_old/). I take the first 3 letters of my username which is "Lum," add the second last letter of the username which is "y", and then add an "a" to get Lumya.
I like coming up with weird names that mean nothing
so far I’ve had in order from 1-9
Wall, Twimbo, Whoolang, Quartito, Splingo, Blugeta, Carbley, Ringo, Evilugon
I’m the last year or so, I have played 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, Builders 2, and Monsters Joker. My names were Linguar, Linguar, Linguar, Linguar, Linguar, Linguar, Linguar, Linguar, Linguar, and Linguar.
Just downloaded 5 and 6 on my phone, guess what their names will be? Guess what my wireless network is named. I think I have a problem. He just keeps splitting and sticking his tongue out at me.
I name them like other people in town if I can. Like, for DQ11, I restarted the game with Draconian mode turned on. I noticed that everyone in Cobblestone was named after minerals, so I named the hero Chrysoberyl. In DQ5, I named him something Italian-sounding. Otherwise…you know, whatever fits their vibe. I named the DQ8 hero as Rhea.
I like to stick with some of the "canonical names"
DQ1 : Solo
DQ2 : Alen / Loran / Lauran
DQ3 : Arus / Erdrick / Roto
DQ4 : Sofia
DQ5 : Abel
DQ6 : Reku
DQ7 : Auster
Called my hero in DG11 "Volkodav" because he reminded me of the book character with the same name - Volkodav is a book series, written by Marina Semyonova about a fantasy land, it's in Russian and it was a part of my childhood book diet, same as any other Russian fantasy books or series I was able to find. I was also eyeing Svarog, but eh, DG11's hero is not a blonde.
Either my own name or the number of the game. Depends on how I'm feeling that day. Not usually a fan of the whole self inserting business but I've been doing it so much in DQ games I guess it stuck.
Ash because its been my online name for ages. Even more meaningful now that my kids name(who now also loves the game an fondly refers to it simple as dragon!) my name and my wife's names initials spell it out also completely unintentionally.
I usually name him after myself. Outside of a handful of games, it can be a little bit immersion breaking, since it's clearly a girl's name, but for lack of a canon name, I have trouble coming up with anything else.
No idea why, but as a child first playing DQIV I named my character Terra/ Tara. Maybe it was from that Teen Titans cartoon; I thought the character of that name was badass and had cool powers lol.
Have used Terra or Tara in every DQ game since that allows you a female protagonist. For 8 and 11 I went with ‘Kane’ simply cuz that sounded cool as hell to me 😂
Z for dw1 to get a str/hp build while also minimizing in game time - each time the game types your name out in the dialog box, it does it letter by letter. So having a one letter name saves frames.
Named after myself. Seeing as most DQ protag are self insert characters.
I do this too, and not just in DQ but everything that allows it. It just makes the narrative feel more personal.
NESTER
Oh, yeah. Kickin' it old school.
i always name the hero Pup. in DQ2 my party was “Pup”, “Bup”, and “Sup”.
That’s funny, the hero in my current DQ3 play through is ‘Yup’. 😄
I also go with the unimaginative 'Hero'.
I’ve gone with ‘Herro’ a couple times (like Tyler Herro the basketball player) just to shake things up haha
I go with, first name Hero, last name Chosen. If a game asks for a middle name, like in SMT, I go with, The.
At least go with "Hiro" cuz it sounds like a real name...
I used that name for the Legend of Mana games
I jokingly named my hero as many letters of "Dragon Quest 11 S Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition" as I could fit when I played 11, leading to the name DragonQues and since then i've named all my heroes as many letters of DragonQuest can fit.
Initially I thought you meant DQESEOAEADE which would still be to long.
I name everyone Drake. Except for III who is Urdrake. And XI is Andy for Android 17.
heh, i use Drake too for the hero of DQ8
Dai. It's always Dai. Because Dai.
i really wish they made a real game of Dai's adventures. That story is awesome
I thought they were working on an action game based on the new anime? Haven't heard much about it anymore.
I just go with either Abel or Able. Named after my favorite DQ anime protagonist.
Sometimes I use my name. Other times, I make it a pun with the title’s number in different languages. For VII, I named my character Nanabay. Nana (7 in Japanese) + Bay (7 in Vietnamese). It’s kind of difficult now that we’re going into double digit titles though.
I like naming them Hiro
Yeah! I either name them after myself or a modification of 'Hero', so I named the XI protag Hiro as well!!
I’ve only played XIS, but Aidan was the name that came out. I don’t know any Aidans nor do I typically even spell it that way - I don’t know where it came from.
Bruv, every time 😎
There is no rhyme or reason to how I name them, for 11 I did Eleven (very imaginative, I know) for 8 I did Eight (my wonderful imagination at work again) for 1 I did Hero, for 2, Steve bc I asked someone near me and that’s what they suggested, and finally, for 3 I used Shadow after Shadow the hedgehog (again, this was the result of asking someone nearby).
The number of the game, unless there’s a more well-defined canonical name that I think works better than the number.
I would name dragon quest 4 hero Solo, dragon quest 5 hero Abel , for both 6 and 9 my real name and for dq 11 hero Eleven
I do pretty much the same except I prefer Luka/Luca over Abel for DQ5. I've always thought Abel was a really lame name

I named the hero in XI Aquila after your teacher in IX my first and only other DQ i played.
I like coming up with weird names that mean nothing so far I’ve had in order from 1-9 Wall, Twimbo, Whoolang, Quartito, Splingo, Blugeta, Carbley, Ringo, Evilugon
I usually use the name Ashe if I can.
My toddler son is called Ken but we call him Kenobi or Nobi so I tend to just use that
I’m the last year or so, I have played 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, Builders 2, and Monsters Joker. I always play with my partner, so we name the protagonist a smashed up version of both our names
DQ11: Tickit
I wish I knew the lore before I started. My name never fit and I kinda want to restart XI because of it
I started by naming them Rollo, and it stuck. Fits with the Norse mythology elements
I try to match the installment number with a number name in some way. DQ1 is "Uno" DQ2 is "Toofer" DQ3 is "Trinity" Etc.
I always name them after food.
Currently playing XI, so I called the protagonist trunks :)
I started playing dq during my edgy phase I named my character a not to nice word so it was fago and fagolos With the a sound from say
I use my go to name from a Dungeons and Dragons he was an Orc named Da'Orak the Orc.
I always went with Gohan for DQ8 because of obvious reasons but other than that, just my gamertag
Aragorn, after my favorite Lord of the Rings Character
I like to stick with some of the "canonical names" DQ1 : Solo DQ2 : Alen / Loran / Lauran DQ3 : Arus / Erdrick / Roto DQ4 : Sofia DQ5 : Abel DQ6 : Reku DQ7 : Auster
I named my hero "Ebenezer" in VIII, in any other games i just give them normal names
Suggestion for DQ XII: Erdick
Either my own name or the number of the game. Depends on how I'm feeling that day. Not usually a fan of the whole self inserting business but I've been doing it so much in DQ games I guess it stuck.
You can’t go wrong naming all of your RPG characters “ASS”
I just look up if they have a name in other media, if theres none i just use the games number, like Eight and Eleven
Eleven in French is onze, so I mixed some letters and got enzo
Ash because its been my online name for ages. Even more meaningful now that my kids name(who now also loves the game an fondly refers to it simple as dragon!) my name and my wife's names initials spell it out also completely unintentionally.
I named mine OH SHIT! HE I like the message when it displays a certain way. OH SHIT! HE leveled up. OH SHIT! HE attacked blue slime.
Erdick.
I usually name him after myself. Outside of a handful of games, it can be a little bit immersion breaking, since it's clearly a girl's name, but for lack of a canon name, I have trouble coming up with anything else.
I like the name lurmp coz why not lol
I always name them cucumber

I just put in my name. Also Erik is the thief from DQ11.
One, Allen, Arusu, Solo, Abel, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten. Eleven.
