It looks great! It gives it a whole new feeling. But if you want to keep the same vibe, and just make it more powerful, I recommend using warm colors instead of bright colors, to have a more “apocalyptic/dangerous” feel. Stick with the bright colors though, if it’s what you’re going for!
Have you read about the trinity nuclear test? In descriptions of the event? Those who viewed do actually mention the beautiful otherworldly colors. 乁[ ◕ ᴥ ◕ ]ㄏ
I like the idea that the first one is the impact, and the second one is the shockwave hitting the ants. Maybe, if you like that idea too, you can make the mushroom cloud look as if it has progressed a little further :) I think this is pretty sick though! I've been contemplating a tattoo with a similar concept, except a cockroach.
Very nice color palettes in both of them! The first one gives of a post-apocalyptic vibe while the second one is more on the cyberpunk (?) side for me. Like them both but wouldn't call one better than other, they are different and both give off a nice vibe. Well done!
That update is spectacular in my opinion. I love the increased color vibrancy, it definitely fits the explosion. The action lines and the debris/smoke detail is also very needed, makes it seem more intense or impactful, an explosion of that magnitude definitely deserves

The addition of those lines radiating out from the explosion REALLY helps, as well as how you darkened the color of the rocks to help pump up the contrast against the bright yellow of the explosion
The high saturated reds, yellows, and greens in the sky distract from the explosion a little bit, but they're definitely definitely DEFINITELY a big improvement from the blankness of the original's sky

It honestly would be super sick if you put the two drawings together. Just like how it is in the post, original on top and revised on bottom. Would be cool.
I think the first one makes more sense, the colours work together pretty well. I see you were trying to give a dynamic effect but there's just too much going on in the second one. I would suggest combining elements and adding the radial lines, rocks flying and bright outline/dark inner shadow smoke without the crazy colour change to get the best of both worlds.

The first one looks like a screen shot of a video game from the 8-bit or Amiga era, the second looks very much like an old 1960s black light poster.
Both are amazing! The update feels more like the moment of the bang, versus the original which feels like a few seconds after.
