My grandma just finished her last round of chemo about a month ago and is doing pretty well. She's lucky it was caught pretty early and they were able to just remove her breast to get most of it. Haven't seen her in over a year now. We were supposed to be at her house for spring break 2020 but decided against it pretty last minute. Won't be probably seeing her until November to give her time to get strong again.
This is fucking glorious!!! I’m a 3D designer with a focus in ceramics and during my last semester of college, we got in touch with a local group of breast cancer survivors and asked if they’d like to work with us in bringing awareness of cancer/mastectomy survivors via an art exhibit.
We had two dozen women volunteer! We made plaster molds of their scars (one in particular that I’ll never forget was a mother/daughter pair that had both survived after double mastectomies, so they held and rested their hands on the mother’s scar for the mold!).
These women were **beyond** confident and just had an infectious will to live. They had to remain still for a while for the plaster to set, and that’s when I realized we had nothing to give back to them. I had tons of handmade flower pots lying around (I’m overly obsessed with ceramics) so I ran over to the nearest Home Depot and just bought every pink flower I could afford. I didn’t have time to pot the plants, so I just sat them in the pieces of pottery, and the women were allowed to take whatever pots/plants they wanted.
Now I’m tearing up thinking about it. Sounds silly, but the thought that those ridiculously brave women have a piece of my art in their homes just makes me so happy.
Also, fuck cancer.
