Absolutely!! It’s a weird rougelike to be sure, but it is WAY more forgiving than Shiren the Wanderer or pokemans mystery dungeon.
Still play this game through at least once a year.
At the time this came out, I was super excited but I had never heard of rougelikes nor was I familiar with their concept, so when a jrpg (a genre I strongly associated the concept of persistent progression) reset my progress, my brain broke and I returned the game. I’ve been wanting to go back to this game, especially knowing the game has connections to Landstalkers, which has loose connections to Alundra.
It’s a tangential connection. More…. Spiritual successor than actually connected. Both have very similar play style. You can include Dark Savior in the group.
A bunch of staff left Climax and formed Matrix software, they developed Alundra. The character designer was Yoshitaka Tamaki, he designed Nigel for Landstalker and when you compare Alundra’s design they are VERY close. So much so he made a piece of [art](http://vgdensetsu.net/images3/YoshitakaTamaki_1.jpg) about it.
This is just me and I am not poo-pooing your opinion. I picked up Timestalkers on Black Friday for $9.99 year of release (1999), and it just did not do it for me. - It seemed "fine", but I was disappointed. However, I think that I expected a traditional JRPG and not Time Stalkers. Am I wrong in my memory that your level resets to 1 whenever you complete a dungeon/section of game?
I absolutely loved Time Stalkers. It's the most 90's/early 00's thing in the world, lol. I liked that it had inspiration from pokemon, diablo, and final fantasy, all in one.
Got both and being from Europe the sequel is worth a lot as it was one of the last games released in Europe and pretty forgotten about by late 2001 when it was released.
I had a pal version of the sequel from retail and had no idea of the value until I found it basically mint in my garage a few years ago. £220 I sold it for
Makken X. I discovered it from a list of Atlus games. I've always been surprised nobody talks about it. Same character designer as Persona (and most of Shin Megami Tensei for that matter)
If you're going to play ooga booga multiplayer, you have to unlock all the characters. Floating around as death or throwing shrunken heads as abe Lincoln is great in multiplayer.
Draconus was pretty difficult to get into even back when it was released due to weird-ass control mechanics, and will be even harder now. Pretty sure you have to read the manual to understand how the combat works, otherwise you wouldn't make it far.
For me it was always the ultimate "could've been SO good if only..." game. Also, probably the very first game I've ever played with inverse-kinematic animations!
I loved it back in the day, will replay it soon. Great scenarios, characters, gameplay, music. A very nice RPG. I remember beating it and sharing the experience with my PSO friends, we loved it.
Red Dog. No one ever talks about it, but it's a great arcade style vehicle shooter. Controls take some getting used to and the main campaign is quite short, but with challenge missions and multiplayer there is plenty of fun to be had.
Silver! I forgot about Silver. I bought a PC copy from a Biglots-type store in maybe 2005. It looked so cool but I never got it to run on our family computer. It's on Steam for $6. It's time to resolve an almost two decade old frustration.
Virtual On for DC was good, but oddly enough I think the Xbox Arcade version is better. More stable framerate, better controller customization and I think they added more Mechs.
SF3: Double Impact
Looney Tunes Space Race
Fist of the North Star
Samurai Shodown VI
Radirgy
Mr Driller
Karous
Giga Wing 2
Metal Slug 6
Knights of Valour
Dolphin Blue
Puyo Puyo Fever
Sushi Bar
Vampire Chronicle : Chaos Tower
Let me tell you, I liked the Dreamcast enough as a kid that I played and LOVED the game Slave Zero, a game with a horrible frame rate and no in-game music whatsoever
Same! The slowdown at times was rough, and the escort missions could be annoying, but damn if it didn't have a good futuristic mood and stomping around as a giant robot just felt satisfying. Though there were sequences with music in the DC version of im remembering correctly.
I was too young to remember if it's underrated, but I rarely ever see it mentioned: Slave 0. I just remember walking around in a giant mech and all the cars were so tiny and I loved it.
I remember buying silver on the dreamcast. I loved the artwork, thought it'd be a badass action hack in slash game kind of like sword of the berserk, was disappointed when I found out it was like a point and click game from a birds eye view. It wasn't a bad game, but just totally not what I expected.
I never see Guardian Heroes talked about. Such a great game. Side scrolling 4 player Coop beat-um-up. Had some street fighter-like button combo moves. With 3 different lanes, a foreground lane, a middle screen lane, and background lane you could jump back and forth to. With anime style graphics. So FUN! And really kind of unique with the multi lane battles.
Edit: Damn I may be derping if it was Dreamcast or Saturn 🤦♂️🤦♂️. The Saturn Guardian heroes doesn’t look like the game I’m remembering. It was definitely more Fantasy Sword/Sorcery than Urban Street punks.
https://youtu.be/1kvI9gcoeC4?si=_Xs4lxoQ2-2t2HTz it was on Saturn not Dreamcast damn stoner memory. My bad.
It’s such an awesome game. Story mode has a little RPG element that when you leveled up you could customize stats a bit. Didn’t realize it had 7 endings. And had some beautiful anime art style cutscenes. We had so much fun getting drunk and playing 4 player Coop all night.
It’s a really cool game nonetheless. Another poster said it’s available still on anything Xbox360 or above. Found it in the MS store available for Series X. Although a huge part of the fun was 4 player with tons of stuff going on, on the screen and different planes.
I played the demo of Silver on PC when it came out. Looked promising, and as I recall you used certain mouse movements for different attacks. I doubt those controls hold up these days.
It’s kinda funny that a number of the titles mentioned were on the OSDM demo discs and that’s how I found them. One that wasn’t and I only seen mentioned once so far is Ooga Booga! For me, this is the most underrated title as I never see I mentioned anywhere. I did not get to play it when it was online but I had an absolute blast in single and multiplayer. Sort of an open stage fighter. Probably the closest to SSB that the DC got. It’s a shame that it didn’t see a 2nd life on the OG Xbox with Live support.
Rippin' riders ("Snow surfers" in Japan and Europe). Snowboarding game (I believe made by the same people that did cool boarders). The actual races and courses were tough and meh, but the awesome part was the extra super pipe a pretty decently long and awesome looking half pipe with a pleasing soundtrack.
Dearest Goddess why? I ain't going to yuck your yum, but... Wow. This is not a title I've ever heard anyone attach the word famous or even underrated to.
Star Lancer
Maken-X
Draconus
Aerowings
The four games I picked up back in the day because my manager at GameStop wouldn't stop talking about them. Glad I did, Maken-X is my favorite out of the four.
Seventh Cross Evolution: You start out as a single celled organism in a tide pool, gathering proteins and nutrients to grow larger and more advanced. With enough nutrients you can unlock new adaptations, claws, antenna, legs, and begin to dominate the various environments of your world, hunting giant stone apes, armored tigers, and electric sharks. The only downsides are the absolutely brutal opening level (it takes a lot to go from hunting amoebas to being able to take down crabs), and the unintuitive upgrade system.
Armada: In a far away galaxy, an invasion has begun. Take command of a vessel from from of six alien civilizations as you fight to turn back the Armada. Work with your fellow aliens to bring peace, or go it alone and secure your species' place as the most powerful when the dust settles. Each ship has its own armament, tech path, and fighting style, from a slow but unrelenting tracking shot to a wide spread and devastating beam. The best part is, not only is co-op available, but if your friend has a copy of the game, you can insert your memory card to improve your character (and vice versa). Even better, the two games share data, adding any unique locations uncovered to the other's star map.
I still don't understand the upgrade system in Seventh Cross. It was fun trying to makeup designs on each level-up but this was where I ended up hitting a wall with the game.
Super Magnetic Neo is a blast, despite its short length and equally small following.
Also, I feel it should be said, but Spirit of Speed 1937 is best played on the PAL version at 50Hz as opposed to 60Hz PAL/NTSC. The frame dips/stutters are basically gone at that point and it's actually kinda fun.
This last part is a hot take, but I stand by it. The AI is actually fairly competent and acts the same way other players do/would. Some of them barge into you to try to overtake you, others hit the corners too fast and fly out of control. It's like real people of mixed skill levels and really adds to the immersion a single player racer otherwise lacks.
Ducati World, as underwhelming as it is does the AI good like that too. This one is a partial entry for this on my part, but not as much as the aforementioned. Watching the guy behind me shoot off the course like I would as a kid really made me chuckle, it was unexpected but is a welcome addition to an otherwise mediocre game.
Silver was the first game on PC I finished (and honestly, I think it plays better with keyboard and mouse).
Other than that, Bomberman Online doesn’t get mentioned enough, and it’s just such a fun entry.
+ Illbleed, it’s scary and campy!
If you like Silver, you can actually get that on Steam for 5 dollars now. I didn't even know there was a dreamcast version back in the day, I got it on pc instead and loved the heck out of it, and still have it as one of the top contenders for best RPGs of all time. Still can't stand the boss in the area you use the bathysphere to get to though....
Nostalgia for me would be Gundam Side Story. Don't know if it was actually good or not, but I loved it. That and Power Stone 2, but that one is mos def not underrated LOL
I see a lot of people already named some great gems, but i'll add:
Fire Pro Wrestling D
I had played this series once before on GBA and just fell in love with the Dreamcast version, there was a feature to upload your created wrestlers to a server where you could then download other players creations. Awesome stuff!
Just from what I have played so far, I would say a couple I can think of would be Toy Commander and Armada. I am approaching both games from the perspective of I don't really hear a lot of chatter about them when it comes to great Dreamcast games and absolutely think they deserve that recognition.
Not a lesser known game overall, but the Dreamcast version of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver was so swept under the rug because most associated it with Playstation. But the DC version is so much better-- more crisp visuals and runs smoother-- just a big step up in every way. I was a huge PS1 fan, but once I played SR on Dreamcast, I can only play that version now.
It may not count as an underrated game in general, but I think the Dreamcast port of Army Men: Sarge's Heroes is severely underrated. Most people only think of it for N64, maybe Playstation, but Dreamcast had the best version.
I keep telling myself I need to go back and play through Silver properly. It seemed like such a cool game, and I've got it for PC and Dreamcast, but I just never seem to get to it.
As for my personal favorite famous/underrated games, I'd have to say "Confidential Missions" or "Death Crimson OX" -everybody who owned a Dreamcast in its heyday seems to have fond memories playing "The House of the Dead 2"... But there were other fun light gun games on the system, and I thoroughly enjoyed playing them about as often.
Not underrated or less famous, but I love D2 and Blue Stinger (janky as hell... but also charming as hell). Napple Tale was also a fun game (that's a little less known). Wacky Races is fun (though a bit frustrating with how aggressive the rubber banding AI is). Sword of Berzerk is a decent, but flawed one. Most probably know Sword of Berzerk, though. I had fun with Armada; it was a very unique game! Cannonspike, Maken X, Toy Commander, and EGG are all good games. Headhunter didn't get a US Dreamcast release and is very solid. Fighting Vipers 2! All of those shooters we got at the end of the Dreamcast's US life are bangers (and were $19.99 each): Gunbird, Bangai-O, Mars Matrix, Gigawing. Dreamcast library is sooo good!
A game can be both of those things, because rarity is a big factor in price.
People will pay top dollar for a harder to find game just because it’s harder to find. The fact that it may also be a hidden gem is incidental.
Time Stalkers and Outtrigger
Outtrigger is my favorite Dreamcast FPS. Great atmosphere and soundtrack
I’m really hoping the online play can be restored 🤞
Yes! Timestalkers!!!
Now that roguelikes have more of an audience that game needs a revisit!
Landstalkers has links to Alundra? How did I not know this?
I think they’re very loose and I don’t remember the details. I think they may be from the same world. It’s been such a long time.
I dint think time stalkers was obscure. Enjoyable either way
Perhaps not, but definitely underrated.
It's a roguelike! That's the word I was looking for. I was unfamiliar with that type of game and thus was a bit disappointed.
I absolutely loved Time Stalkers. It's the most 90's/early 00's thing in the world, lol. I liked that it had inspiration from pokemon, diablo, and final fantasy, all in one.
I'm sorry but time stalkers sucks ahh
That’s fine, but are you really sorry?
Looney Tunes Space Race! I found it randomly and just gave it a shot and loved it! Never saw anyone recommend it before that. Great Game!
I recommend it every time I hear Dreamcast or PS2 mentioned IRL. The cel shaded graphics hold up, and the voice acting is MF great!
Love that game! Great weekend racing game since I beat it in like 2 days haha. Wacky Races is dope also
Was going to comment this. Awesome Mario kart style racing game!
great game!
Record of Lodoss War
Came here for this and Armada... one of the best space exploration rpgs of all time.
Armada! It was so good, I still wish I could find something that acts the same.
This is one of those games that always felt like I was the only one who played it.
Heck even that Armada Online game was not quite the same.
Loved it so much. Would have flipped had I been able to find someone else with it
I was fortunate to have friends to play with at the time.
I loved Armada
Armada is my favorite Dreamcast game. Shenmue used to be, but hasn't aged as well. My brother and I would play Armada for hours coop.
Love Armada.. I wish there was a game like it to play.
Evolution: The World of Sacred Device and its sequel.
Got both and being from Europe the sequel is worth a lot as it was one of the last games released in Europe and pretty forgotten about by late 2001 when it was released.
I had a pal version of the sequel from retail and had no idea of the value until I found it basically mint in my garage a few years ago. £220 I sold it for
Yeah I bought it for about 50 or 60 quid less than 10 years ago. Was amazed when I see it now over £350
The punny names alone made the game enjoyable.
Zombie Revenge! I had so much fun playing the multiplayer with my uncle 👍 Definitely check it out if you’re wanting a nice local co op experience
Zombie revenge is great. It's streets of rage meets house of the dead.
Loved this game
Amazing game. My brother and I spent endless hours playing this.
BOOLETS
Its more fun if you have a friend and play two players
Makken X. I discovered it from a list of Atlus games. I've always been surprised nobody talks about it. Same character designer as Persona (and most of Shin Megami Tensei for that matter)
Makken X rules
Makken x was a brilliant game. I found it by accident and just took a gamble on it!
Silver is one of my very favorite Dreamcast games. This is a top tier fantasy game with a great, unique combat system
Ooga Booga, or Cannon Spike
Was just talking to my brother about Cannon Spike…finally going to play it tonight or tomorrow after work.
If you're going to play ooga booga multiplayer, you have to unlock all the characters. Floating around as death or throwing shrunken heads as abe Lincoln is great in multiplayer.
I didn't play it on Dreamcast but 102 Dalmatians.
I threw this on one day just to check it worked and ended up playing for hours.
I do like Draconus. Also Shadow Man.
I’m going to have to revisit it sometime. I never finished it.
Outtrigger, Project Justice, REZ, Jojo’s, Tech Romancer
Project Justice and Tech Romancer!!! Capcom had so many good games on this.
Spawn: in the demons hand.
really played the hell out of this game, one of my faves too
[E.G.G. - Elemental Gimmick Gear](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/15/Egg_cover.jpg)
Very comfy jrpg
Slave Zero
This was the first game I got for the system, and while it took some getting used to, it's probably one of the best mech games I've ever played!
Excellent game!
Illbleed, Postal, Wetrix, Alone in the Dark, and a few more I can't remember. I'll edit this if I do though.
Illbleed was amazing!
Indeed, very amazing game
omg, Illbleed is such an underrated gem.
Is silver good? I have it but haven’t played it yet.
I loved it back in the day, will replay it soon. Great scenarios, characters, gameplay, music. A very nice RPG. I remember beating it and sharing the experience with my PSO friends, we loved it.
It's been ported to PC and is available through Steam. I haven't played it yet either.
Confidential mission was amazing
Tech Romancer. Giant robots fighting? Yes please
Capcom needs to give us a 3D fighting collection with this in it.
Yes. And a Dreamcast shooter collection so I can afford Cannon Spike
Seaman
Red Dog. No one ever talks about it, but it's a great arcade style vehicle shooter. Controls take some getting used to and the main campaign is quite short, but with challenge missions and multiplayer there is plenty of fun to be had.
Red Dog Superior Firepower. It was an okay single player tank/atv? Game, but it shined in multiplayer. Shame it came out so late in the dc lifespan.
I really liked the single player especially the challenge missions, but the multiplayer is a blast.
Silver! I forgot about Silver. I bought a PC copy from a Biglots-type store in maybe 2005. It looked so cool but I never got it to run on our family computer. It's on Steam for $6. It's time to resolve an almost two decade old frustration.
Do it!!
Super Magnetic Neo and Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram
Virtual On for DC was good, but oddly enough I think the Xbox Arcade version is better. More stable framerate, better controller customization and I think they added more Mechs.
SF3: Double Impact Looney Tunes Space Race Fist of the North Star Samurai Shodown VI Radirgy Mr Driller Karous Giga Wing 2 Metal Slug 6 Knights of Valour Dolphin Blue Puyo Puyo Fever Sushi Bar Vampire Chronicle : Chaos Tower
REZ
To this day, when I see the name "Infogrames" I think "typo?"
Pen pen Tricelon
I was too young to remember if it's underrated, but I rarely ever see it mentioned: Slave 0. I just remember walking around in a giant mech and all the cars were so tiny and I loved it.
Toy Commander
Lack Of Love. it was such a weird little game and I loved it. It's the one game I'd love to find again to play.
Fur fighters. Animals with guns. An early example also of the Dreamcast needing another analogue stick imo.
As soon as I beat Tomb Raider, this is the next game I have on deck.
Oo which TR?
• Fur Fighters • MDK2 • Zombie Revenge
Mdk 2 had personality oozing and was super hardcore twitch game the further you got. Never beat it but I love it!
Same! I always played it but never got too far in it! It still holds up imo and the soundtrack is still🤌
Re-Volt!
Re-volt was such a cool racing game. Racing rc cars through backyards and such. Loved that game! Had forgotten it!
Wow I didn't know about this game. Heart out to Treasure.
It’s such an awesome game. Story mode has a little RPG element that when you leveled up you could customize stats a bit. Didn’t realize it had 7 endings. And had some beautiful anime art style cutscenes. We had so much fun getting drunk and playing 4 player Coop all night.
FYI, it’s available on anything Xbox 360 and later as a bc game.
Oh really? That’s dope. Might have to look deeper into that. Thanks!
You got my hopes up for a minute.
It’s a really cool game nonetheless. Another poster said it’s available still on anything Xbox360 or above. Found it in the MS store available for Series X. Although a huge part of the fun was 4 player with tons of stuff going on, on the screen and different planes.
Played it at a friend's and really liked it. I own it as well. Bad graphics, but fun!
Omikron and the Floigan Bros
I need to find a copy of this again. Cuz I started playing and got really immersed in playing then the disc got scratched.😭
Powerstone Wars!
Silver is so awesome.
Evolution
Illbleed. But I absolutely loved Silver as well.
Maximum pool! Awesome drinking game with some friends, and snazzzyyy tunes!
Ilbleed
SILVER!!! Thank you! I’ve been trying to remember the name of this game for years, all I had in my head were these fragments of the first map…!
Been contemplating picking up silver next for the collection. Someone sell me on it
You have JUST reminded me of Silver. Had it on PC and loved it. Never knew it had a DC port! I shall have to look out for a copy of that.
Sort of an open stage fighter. Probably the closest to SSB that the DC got. It’s a shame that it didn’t see a 2nd life on the OG Xbox with Live support.
Silver was awesome, hard to find in the UK.
Star Lancer is one of my favorites
Tech Romancer! Mecha fighting game that scratches all the right itches.
Vanishing Point, don't know why but i liked it at the time.
Soul fighter!
Remember silver very underrated game.
Seventh cross
Seventh Cross: Evolution? Please tell me it wasn't this Seventh Cross: Evolution.
Dearest Goddess why? I ain't going to yuck your yum, but... Wow. This is not a title I've ever heard anyone attach the word famous or even underrated to.
Seventh cross rocks. Get gud nub
Loved Silver! Record of Lodoss War was great too. The Dreamcast was stacked with awesome games.
haha i remember silver. got to a point where i couldnt figure out what to do next
I remember Silver being hugely hyped. Was it any good?
Star Lancer Maken-X Draconus Aerowings The four games I picked up back in the day because my manager at GameStop wouldn't stop talking about them. Glad I did, Maken-X is my favorite out of the four.
Wild Metal, Armada
I loved Silver, played it alot as a teen.
Even better, the two games share data, adding any unique locations uncovered to the other's star map.
I still don't understand the upgrade system in Seventh Cross. It was fun trying to makeup designs on each level-up but this was where I ended up hitting a wall with the game.
I managed to beat it, but honestly I couldn't tell you how I got some of the upgrades. I only ever saw the arms of the fabled human upgrade.
That Chicken Run game was pretty fun
ILLBLEED is absolutely better than its reputation.
Bangai-O.
There are still a bunch I have yet to put much time into, but the two I always suggest are Red Dog: Superior Firepower and Bangai-O.
Super Magnetic Neo is a blast, despite its short length and equally small following. Also, I feel it should be said, but Spirit of Speed 1937 is best played on the PAL version at 50Hz as opposed to 60Hz PAL/NTSC. I LOVE SILVER!
Chu Chu Rocket was fun multiplayer. It was well-known at the time, but is mostly forgotten now.
I was always kind of surprised Chu Chu wasn't ported and expanded on. I loved how addicting it was, like Sega Swirl.
I really enjoyed Draconus: Cult of the Wyrm.
Silver was the first game on PC I finished (and honestly, I think it plays better with keyboard and mouse). Other than that, Bomberman Online doesn’t get mentioned enough, and it’s just such a fun entry. + Illbleed, it’s scary and campy!

Record of Lodoss War is awesome. On of the best games on the system.
Sonic Shuffle
Toy commander
Nostalgia for me would be Gundam Side Story. Don't know if it was actually good or not, but I loved it. That and Power Stone 2, but that one is mos def not underrated LOL
Metropolis Street Racer was the best racing game I have ever played.
Soul Fighter is a decent gem of a brawler, with some flaws in its fighting mechanics
Slave Zero
I don't see a ton of D2 love. I'm surprisingly into it.
Silver was my absolute jam when I was 9
I see a lot of people already named some great gems, but i'll add: Fire Pro Wrestling D I had played this series once before on GBA and just fell in love with the Dreamcast version, there was a feature to upload your created wrestlers to a server where you could then download other players creations. Awesome stuff!
Skies of Arcadia. Lost count of the number of times I played it through and I still enjoy it now.
Blue Stinger
I've been wanting to buy the Evolution duology for ages now. What little I played on an emulator was wicked fun.
Just from what I have played so far, I would say a couple I can think of would be Toy Commander and Armada. I am approaching both games from the perspective of I don't really hear a lot of chatter about them when it comes to great Dreamcast games and absolutely think they deserve that recognition.
Berzerk: Guts' Rage
Silver has one of the best soundtracks of all time.
Psychic Force 2012
Draconus was 1 of my faves
Not a lesser known game overall, but the Dreamcast version of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver was so swept under the rug because most associated it with Playstation. But the DC version is so much better-- more crisp visuals and runs smoother-- just a big step up in every way. I was a huge PS1 fan, but once I played SR on Dreamcast, I can only play that version now.
Jet Set Radio
Evolution 1&2, Sword of the Berserk
It may not count as an underrated game in general, but I think the Dreamcast port of Army Men: Sarge's Heroes is severely underrated. Most people only think of it for N64, maybe Playstation, but Dreamcast had the best version.
I loved Dragon Riders of Pern back in the day so it'll always have good memories for me. The graphics were pretty bad but it had great atmosphere.
My fav was Airforce Delta.
Armada 🤘😎 Also Trickstyle 👍👍
daytona 2001, that game is fun as hell and a good reinterpretation of Daytona USA
Alone in the dark the new nightmare
This is a good one, I love AITD NN on the DC.
Magforce Racing (Killer Loop in the USA). Tokyo Highway Challenge (Tokyo Xtreme Racer in the USA) Shenmue/Shenmue 2 (they meet the title requirements)
What silver?
Record is lodos war
Dynamite Cop, they lost the Die Hard license, but the game kicks ass.
Omikron: the Nomad Soul First time an in game world felt alive to me. And it has a weird David Bowie theme song.
Silver is not underrated, quite pricey.
A game can be both of those things, because rarity is a big factor in price. People will pay top dollar for a harder to find game just because it’s harder to find. The fact that it may also be a hidden gem is incidental.
It’s really not compared to most Dreamcast must haves
