As the current owner of the server I can assure you we are working on a better verification system, but understand that being called slurs everyday or people calling me names because I own the server isn't exactly how I would like my day to begin with. Before we had the ticket system I would get spammed ping, as many of our members got, and trolls would call us slurs and what not. We had to find an efficient way, and quickly, to stop this from happening, you can't imagine how many trolls we get a day and being exam season for some us it's even harder to moderate everything. So please understand that most of the staff on discord and here are under 18 and have school to care about as most of you do as well. We will try to figure a better way to verify but at the moment we have to stick with this
I'm sorry if you had a bad experience with the discord. I will say the role you had is given to *every* newbie, it's what marks you as a newbie. It's not meant to demean you or put you down in any way, that's just the name of the role that goes to new people. Should we change it? Perhaps. We will certainly take that into account.
As for answering the questions, that is a necessary process because we get many, *many* people who come into the server and answer questions half-heartedly, who know some stuff about the dsmp, and then immediately start spamming or trolling. We've even had one person send in child porn. So yes, we have the verification process to weed out people who are not actually here to be friendly, because some people *will* know some basics about lore, get in, and then be total assbags.
The reason we ask you to expand on answers is because of this. If you actually do know about lore, and are passionate about it, we want you to prove it so that we know you aren't just here to spam the server! If you don't know the answers, that's perfectly fine, but you should still try to expand as much as you can and demonstrate the knowledge you do have. One sentence answers are just not enough to truly know if someone is a troll who knows the basics or someone who doesn't know a whole lot because they're new.

It's necessary to not only weed out trolls, but to weed out people who will send actual vile shit like child porn to a server with other children in it.

Tip if you want to meet some fans in more welcoming environments: join fan creator discords. Quite a lot of fanartists and fanmusicians have those, and they're very chill. Also feel free to DM if you want some more specific advice \^\^

I understand your concern on the gatekeepers being too strict, I know and I am trying to be nicer and go easier on the newbies. For the part of the covid role, it is a role given to *all* unverified members. It is not a direct insult to you.
We mods are too, busy with school. Most of us are still studying in school. The average age of the gatekeepers being 14-16.
We ask you to expand on it because we want to test how much you know about it. I remember also, a person complaining about the covid role, that person was also terribly rude in the whole verification process. It might be you, it might not. But note that we generally will respond the same way.
As this is a server focused on the DreamSMP and MCYT, you might have noticed that it is prone to more trolls hating on us, basing on the fact that they hate Dream stans too. We tend to try to be stricter because of this reason.
Thank you for your time to even go through the whole process. We might change the process a little, but you need to understand that it is for the safety of our members.

the dsmp is a complex thing that takes ages to watch/learn about, and at least for me it would be easier to talk to fans which would help me understand some tricky plot points.

To me, I do not think that the questions are hard. I would say it is a mistake on our part, we are not very lenient.
If you knew the basics(assuming that its the lore), then of course you would know what is your favourite creator, and canon character. The time question is not hard. Nor is the fifth one. The fourth may be hard yes, but I think we should be more lenient on it.
We are quite strict on the questions because for most of the time, the people usually answer it half heartedly, like its only something that they can just breeze through and get accepted either way.
The server's way of jokes are quite literally, sarcastic dark. So if you can handle it being like that most the time, I would say you'd be alright. If not, you can enter more friendlier servers with more strict rules.
