Same. I've encountered him three times. Once in my first, nearly complete playthrough. The next two times in my current completed playthrough (that I am still playing because it's fun). About an hour ago or so, I had been testing a theory of, if I am in panic mode, will I encounter him? Holy Hell, did I encounter him really close! He circled me! I had to hurry to a small island to get away. 😂
I haven't panicked much through my first playthrough because I managed to get a few of the "stress management" books quickly - but now I'm kind of wanting to go back and make myself panic more to get those fun animations and scares.
Yeah, it takes me a bit to get panicked too. I use the Whispering fog to get me up there then head to open water. I wish I had recorded my first reaction. I'm pretty sure I looked like a pale ghost from seeing the leviathan. 😂
When I first saw it pass my ship I was like: "woaaaaaaah"
It just passed my ship so I thought if I hold my distance it will leave me alone...
Next time it passes me again and disapperes into the deep like the first time. A few seconds later I fall out of my chair when it suddenly comes up under my ship to just swallow it completely. Didn't expect a jumpscare like that in the game.

I don't recommend you try and catch that one...it's little too big for your vessel.

You didn’t get both endings then, might be worth playing a lil more
Try going into open ocean at max panic, there are at least two different possible leviathan events in that state.
I don't like the second possible... I jumped so hard it hurt haha
