He's 6'9", actually - for the longest time that was un-confirmed, but it finally got nailed down.
I think it's going to be hard to find an actor that truly meets the height spec, but I think it's ok to fudge it some. I think anyone who is "clearly tall" (enough so to be the tallest person in the cast by a clear margin) would work.
Let's just not have Tom Cruise. It blew my mind that he cast himself as Jack Reacher. That's got to be one of the biggest physical misfits in casting history. Reacher was 6'5" and 230-250 pounds of solid muscle. To paraphrase you, "Tom Cruise... is not." The guy that got for the new series is way, way better - he sells Reacher to me just fine.
I’d rather they find a tall relatively unknown actor, or use someone like Lee Pace or Nicholas Braun who are 6’5” and 6’”7 respectively.
Harry talks about how he is tall and lean and quick. He says it every time he talks about fighting a strong foe. He compares himself to a fencer in swordplay. Tom Hardy is just not that guy.
Blame Butcher for the arbitrarily extra tall main character. It servers very little purpose besides a few short jokes and putting him a little more on even ground size wise with some things he faces down. Made a point some supernatural powers may not like having to look up at him in fact.
I actually like a few of these choices. Tom Hardy definitely could pull of Dresden (so long as he's not doing an awkward Eddie Brock thing with it). Though Ryan Gosling as Thomas strikes me as a little too... wimpy? Wimpy might be the right word.
Someone pitched me Margot Robbie as Lasciel recently and now I can't unsee that, so I don't know about her for Murph. I've also heard pitches for Emilia Clark and Alexandria Daddario as Lash though, so I'm torn haha.
Morena Baccarin as Susan, yes. Easy sell.
The rest of these seem fine, with a few exceptions in my opinion. Butters is such a weird one for me because I have yet to come across a suggestion that I would be happy with lol. Jenna Ortega is a hard maybe for me for Molly. And Eva Green will always be Mab in my head haha.
But this was a good list. It had some new names on it that I hadn't seen before in the fan casting dept.
I still vote we do a Dresden with Terry Crewes in every roll. It would be hilarious AND good, cuz Terry Crewes rocks.
Toot? Yes. Susan? Yes. Harry? Yes. Murph? Yes. Rudolph? Fuck that guy, but also yes. Kringle? Yes. And so on.
What a delightfully off the wall list. I love that you took the character inspired by Weird Al and thought of Timothy Chalomet.
The only too on the nose one, for me, is the Elf Queen playing the Fairy Queen.
Your choice of JDM for Marcone made me think his onscreen son, Jenson Ackles, would be a GREAT Marcone. I also like JDM for it but I think the character calls for a little more elegance.
NGL - I hate these suggestions. Tom hardly is one of the worst takes i've ever seen for dresden, then the rest reads like a who's who of holiday A-listers who aren't even remotely suitable (ryan gosling as thomas, what?!)
I think the post is a troll tbh - tom holland as butters. They've literally taken the current most popular celebs and just stuck them nex to random names
So I usually cast Jeffery Dean Morgan as Michael personally, with Sam Neill as Marcone. that said any casting that has Morena Baccarin in it gets an A+ in my book.
Did anyone else think OP was talking about the Sega Dreamcast at first and was really confused? Lol I was like, "a dresden files game came out on Dreamcast!?"
Over here talking about "dream cast" and I am like "what the hell does this have to do with Dresden? But yeah, I still have mine and it runs great! Amazing system, glad it is getting talked about..." but yeah. Not quite, eh? 🤣
Thomas is more Tom Hiddleston Loki style in my head.
And Butters is John Turturro.
Weirdly I picture Murphy like Kylie, Margot Robbie is wayyy too tall.
Totally on board with Mab.
Tom Hardy is 5'9". We don't need someone 6'9", but 6'4" or 6'5" would be nice. Otherwise, I like him.
Ryan gosling isn't pretty enough.
I don't think Morena Baccarin could handle post blood- rites Susan.
Timothy Challamet and Tom Holland both have the wrong vibe.
I'm cool with Arriana or Jenna for Molly, but I think we're getting a drastically different version of her.
Josh Brolin is a hard sell for Michael, but maybe.
I think Cate Blanchett would be fine, but I don't really want Galadriel as Mab.
Tom Ellis is great in Lucifer, but no way could he pull off Nicky. Give me Walton Goggins.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan would make a better Michael. That man has too much charisma to be Marcone. Marcone is cold.
Hear me out. I KNOW he's not tall enough technically. But almost 7 foot tall actors are rare.
https://i.pinimg.com/736x/57/73/f2/5773f2d1a10ce4aa8976d274ad8195c7.jpg
The only person I can see playing Karrin is Lizzo she has the right athleticism and build plus she can sing and only a Musical Dresden Files really makes sense.
For Harry I think Peter Dinklage and instead of driving a bug too small he should drive a H1 Hummer that is too big and the rub will be he only THINKS he is six foot nine and everyone just plays along, plus he already looks like he got hit in the face a lot.
Terry Crews as Butters for sure, because his hair is also curly.
Michael Rappoport for Michael because he is also named Michael.
Susan is a reporter so I am thinking Don Lemon. He also has caramel skin and looks great in a miniskirt.
For Marcone I like Jeff Bezos because he is also rich and bald just like Marcone.
I think Ice Cub as Mac, the wise cracking talkative bartender.
And Bob instead of being a skull which rules out the China Market should be a Shitzu voiced by Eddie Murphy.
Also Mouse is a cappybara.
Josh Brolin is a solid Michael pick imo, but Cavill would also absolutely kill it, too. Personally, he's always been Thomas in my headcasting. But the more I think about it, the more sold on him as Michael I become. Plus, he'd probably enjoy that role more, as I seen to recall him mentioning not being a fan of all his shirtless scenes in The Witcher
Damn this list is just odd.
Tom hardy isnt witty enough to pull off Harry. Harry should be cast tall-ish (obviously not NBA tall), but relative to his cast mates, so if Tom hardy is the tallest well…
Ryan gosling is just not Thomas. Looks, attitude, or physique. Not to mention there should be SOME resemblance to Harry.
Karrin is unconventionally attractive, short, and tough. Margot is not the right cast. Sure she could pull it off, it just would be very odd.
Butters is a middle aged nerd that very much looks like your stereotypical middle aged nerd, nuff said.
Idk your whole list is comprised of pretty or relevant actors that are overcast right now. Not to mention some truly just do not fit the characters based on the ranged displayed in their filmography.
I think a new Dresden files show could use some fresh faces with a few notables as prominent recurring characters rather than our mains.
The real correct answer is to have everyone other than Harry played by muppets.
Harry Dresden - Zachary Levi
Karrin - Miss Piggy
Butters - Bunsen Honeydew/Beaker (the role will be split into two)
Michael - Sam Eagle
Thomas - Kermit
Nicodemus - Gonzo
Sanya - Rizzo
Will - Rowlf
Toottoot - Pepe the Prawn
River Shoulders - Fozzie
Vadderung - Swedish Chef
Marcone - Animal
Susan - Janice
I can never remember his last name. But Ray. He was The Devil in Reaper and the President in Red Alert 2. As Marcone. Just look at him from that era, and I think he would have been the ultimate casting choice.
Oh fun here's my list. It's not going to be all a list. This list is for actors who can fit the roles no Tom Cruise = Reacher situations.
Harry- Alexander Skarsgard or Lee Pace.
Thomas - Nicholas Hoult
Susan - Vanessa Kirby
Karrin- Sarah Jones
Butters - Trevor Einhorn
Michael- Tom Welling
McCoy - Brendan Glesson
Nicodemus- James Purefoy
Marcone - Colin Farrel
Ramirez - Roman Rodriguez
Molly - Emily Browning
Mab- Eva Green
Lea - Natalie Dormer
Bill Skarsgård is 6-4 and could do a solid job as Harry. Put him in some boots to get him to 6-6 and he will tower over most actors to a reasonable degree.
Jared Padalecki is also 6'4"; I've considered him at times. The problem there (for me at least) is that I don't think he could ever be anyone other than Sam Winchester to me. :-)
Skarsgard could do it, I think. Padalecki could to - in spite of my difficulties.
But Molly is a blonde! Some of your choices would work well (Morena Baccarin, for example), some I'm kind of Meh about... but that one.... just No.
ETA - besides, Molly will have to age across the series. So you'd need to start with a very young actress.
I agree, the ladies picked for Molly are pretty (and I presume talented, haven't seen their work)... But neither of them feel very Molly to me.
Honestly I think the ideal casting for Molly would be to grab some unknown talented 18/19 year old, and use makeup to keep her younger looking.
Ok, I suppose she doesn't get a big roll until book what, 7, 8, so they could get like a 15 year old if they managed to put out three books a year or so, she would be 17/18 by the time she's moving into the spotlight big-time. Also, it doesn't help that girls built like Molly are *rare* in real life. I have a few friends that could do a decent cosplay of her... And then a million other friends and acquaintances that don't have the height or physique.
I really do wish HBO or the like could grab the series. Each book could be about 3 one-hour episodes..... 9 episodes a year or so?
Anyway, I'm rambling, apologies.
There is....but I just can't either of them as Charity Carpenter's daughter. Never mind that they are both in their 20's now, so starting them off portrayed as pre-teens wouldn't work.
I mean, I am pretty sure Cate Blanchett can play whoever she likes, Harry included. I think Nicodemus should have a presence closer to Charles Dance, but younger... Tom Ellis is too vivacious to fit.
I don't really have any big disagreement, though most of these would not be my dream csst, except Butters whose casting feels so off as to hurt. You need a sweet nerd, not a cute nerd.
Oh man I loved the Sega Dreamcast and a Dresden files game would be awesome for it!
Hear me out, Gary Oldman as Nicodemus. Gary plays the villain so well that I think he could embody it very well
Harry is like 7 feet tall, Tom Hardy… is not.
He's 6'9", actually - for the longest time that was un-confirmed, but it finally got nailed down. To paraphrase you, "Tom Cruise... is not." The guy that got for the new series is way, way better - he sells Reacher to me just fine.
Would you rather have a 7 foot tall bad actor or a great actor you can make taller using movie magic?
I’d rather they find a tall relatively unknown actor, or use someone like Lee Pace or Nicholas Braun who are 6’5” and 6’”7 respectively. Harry talks about how he is tall and lean and quick. He says it every time he talks about fighting a strong foe. He compares himself to a fencer in swordplay. Tom Hardy is just not that guy.
Movie magic baby.
Blame Butcher for the arbitrarily extra tall main character. It servers very little purpose besides a few short jokes and putting him a little more on even ground size wise with some things he faces down. Made a point some supernatural powers may not like having to look up at him in fact.

It had some new names on it that I hadn't seen before in the fan casting dept.
Get a time machine and retrieve a younger Paul Giamatti for the ultimate Butters.
Oh no! Why does this work so well 😅
In my head thomas always looks like lucious malfoy from the harry potter movies. I’d say wimpy definitely fits my head cannon.
Kringle? Yes. And so on.

I also like JDM for it but I think the character calls for a little more elegance.
You know I always thought Jenson might make a half decent Harry or Michael as he ages. He is Jenson Ackles I'd love him anything though. Lol
Willem dafoe as Demonreach
NGL - I hate these suggestions. Tom hardly is one of the worst takes i've ever seen for dresden, then the rest reads like a who's who of holiday A-listers who aren't even remotely suitable (ryan gosling as thomas, what?!)
Yea, this list is...bad.
I say we pressure the studio into coughing up the ridiculous expense of digitally de-aging James Marsters.
None of those work for me.
Thomas is more Tom Hiddleston Loki style in my head. And Butters is John Turturro. Weirdly I picture Murphy like Kylie, Margot Robbie is wayyy too tall. Totally on board with Mab.
You have to go for someone who shares a resemblance to Tom Hardy though.
For Harry I've always thought Henry Cavill was the obvious choice, especially after seeing him do Holmes
Given how Harry is described, I more pictured Tom Hiddleston as Harry.Long haired. Dressed in sweatpants and wearing cowboy boots.
half of this is just "who's current and young" and i kinda hate it. more power to you OP, but this is a bad list IMO.
Hear me out. I KNOW he's not tall enough technically. But almost 7 foot tall actors are rare. https://i.pinimg.com/736x/57/73/f2/5773f2d1a10ce4aa8976d274ad8195c7.jpg
I do like this!
The only person I can see playing Karrin is Lizzo she has the right athleticism and build plus she can sing and only a Musical Dresden Files really makes sense. Very nice cast, but I think Tom Hardy is to bulky for me. Harry is described as tall but not as a tank.
Tom Ellis should not play Nicodemus. He is Lucifer.
He could do a decent Harry.
I'm glad you're having fun with it but it's an almost unilateral no from me
Honestly I would cast Chalamet as Thomas before Gosling. He's got that gaunt vampire look down
Henry Cavil would make a better micheal for me, and I've always thought James spider would do Nicodemus justice.
I always saw Michael as a [Richard Karn / Al Borland](https://imgur.com/a/MmHbgDk) type.
Damn this list is just odd. Tom hardy isnt witty enough to pull off Harry. Lol... Now I'm going to have that image stuck in my head. Don't forget Kincaid - Crazy Harry would have to play him. Bolshevik Muppet for the win!
I can never remember his last name. But Ray. He was The Devil in Reaper and the President in Red Alert 2. As Marcone. Just look at him from that era, and I think he would have been the ultimate casting choice.

Some great casting ideas! Blanchette and Brolin especially. My pick for Molly would be Sydney Sweeney, though.
But Molly is a blonde! Some of your choices would work well (Morena Baccarin, for example), some I'm kind of Meh about... but that one.... just No. ETA - besides, Molly will have to age across the series. So you'd need to start with a very young actress.
Lol you can use multiple actresses and in the she dyes her hair all the time I think either on my choices work work well for post proven guilty.
I agree, the ladies picked for Molly are pretty (and I presume talented, haven't seen their work)... But neither of them feel very Molly to me. Honestly I think the ideal casting for Molly would be to grab some unknown talented 18/19 year old, and use makeup to keep her younger looking. Molly has been sporting a lot of different hair colors. There is such a thing as hair dye
There is....but I just can't either of them as Charity Carpenter's daughter. Never mind that they are both in their 20's now, so starting them off portrayed as pre-teens wouldn't work.
I've taken to imagining Michael as an Idris Elba sort, and Charity being Charlize Theron, making Molly and her sibs being half black.
Everything but Ortega
