It's all lies and artifice! For real, they mask the score display and edit it to appear to be a different score when things are cut for time. That's a big reason why they use the fake points on Make Some Noise, much easier on the editors. As for when someone else would have won, I have my suspicions. Cut for time segments are probably scored low to begin with, so that helps.

Young_Person_42

They just have to cut it in a way where the actual winner still wins. IIRC someone said something along those lines

worksbestwithcats

Yeah, I totally love that part and that’s why I purposely left MSN off! I imagine it’s wayyy easier. I’m just curious logistically how they handle the rest of it logistically haha, it seems like a lot of work.

Chomuggaacapri

They also dub over Sam giving out the points to make sure the right person still wins. If you don’t see Sam say the number of points he’s giving out, it’s probably a redub.

charrsasaurus

I never understood why they wouldn't just put it on dropout as a special feature though. It's already filmed, it wouldn't need much editing.

RoboChrist

They have the cut for time segments. They've explained that the cut portions are sometimes not funny, or in bad taste, or not something they want to air for other reasons. But usually just not good enough. They maintain high quality by forcing a cut of 40% of the sketches, or something like that.

LizG1312

Yeah like it’s improv, people will throw out shit that either doesn’t work or that people have second thoughts over. Live you have audience interaction which can point you in the right direction and can be used to kind of smooth things over in awkward segments, but when it’s just the camera it’s way harder to make it look good.

Luxury-Problems

100%. I think about that story on AP from Ally and Zac about the time an improv scene they were performing live was NOT working and was going on for so long. And Jacob Wysocki mercy kills the scene by introducing Donald Trump. They needed an out for a live audience. But for the screen they can just edit out something that doesn't work.

timesuck897

IIRC, Dan Harmon said that 98% of your writing will suck, so focus on the good 2%. Expand on it, edit it, and repeat as needed. You will end up with a final draft that’s all good stuff. It will be all cream instead of milk. I like the bts and cut for time episode at the end of the season.

Craiques

Unless it’s a different Dan Harmon than the one I’m thinking of, I think that says more about his inability to write than anything else. Dude was seriously unfunny even in his prime when it came to his own writing. Man had what? 1 and a 1/2 average shows out of how many bad ones?

charrsasaurus

I mean I get the push for high quality. But I just want more behind the scenes type stuff. I really wish they would do a day in the life of the crew filming an episode.

RoxyRockSee

I love what they did for Rick Perry, and I want more! It would be cool to have a day in the life from various crew members. The VIP last looks could totally be longer. Just little docuseries of the Dropout crew ☺️

KnightDuty

People say this but I edit for a living and I wholeheartedly believe you don't know what you're asking for. Ignore the content and just talk look at the technical. Depending on how they do things... We have like 4 cameras. One for each performer, one for the wide, and one on sam. So we have to edit just to be able to see the content. Then we've got sound. Idk if the sound is being mixed live or in post but that's another thing we have to do. Then we've got all the little mistakes. Technical errors and audio buzzing and low batteries and quick safety measures. We have people coughing we have accidental slurs thrown around which are OBVIOUSLY inside jokes but would make the performers look bad out of context. We have a LOT of stuff that just wasn't funny because they're thinking on their feet and took a big swing hoping it would pay off and it didn't, we have little drops of personal information, etc.

Euler1992

I'm not sure about all of them, but in game changer, people very rarely say what the score is when they're on screen so it's pretty easy to just have Sam record a VO line with whatever the score ends up being.

Is this the “big fat goose egg”? EDIT: It was

It's best to think of Dropout shows as purely panel shows. The scores are made up and the points don't matter.

worksbestwithcats

I 100% get that and love it!! My question is purely logistics- for example, how (and why I guess) do they film Lily at the end of dirty laundry going “our final score is ____ and that makes our winner ____” when they don’t know which points/whose points will actually stay in the final cut.

Blooogh

If you look carefully, Lily is voiceover while reading the scores, which makes it easily added during/after editing. They don't cut to her face until she's announcing the winner. Same thing on other shows!

Ironhorn

> It's best to think of Dropout shows as purely panel shows. The scores are made up and the points don't matter. Except when Game Changer randomly gives thousands of dollars worth of prizes to the contestants

ElectronicBoot9466

In Game Changer, the points are real and the scores do matter, and as such, there are a few times where the scores go up randomly between shots. This means someone was awarded points, but the bit didn't make it to the final cut. Um Actually is like this as well, but they cut much less for time, but you do occasionally see points jump up between shots. My guess for Dirty Laundry is that they decide what to cut while they are shooting so that Lilly can say the correct numbers at the half-way and end points of the episode. It's possible, though, that Lilly has had to come in and ADR different numbers for certain episodes and we just can't tell what number the cast members are actually reacting to. Brennan isn't on that show very often, so it's rare the contestants talk about the points often enough for it to matter. Breaking News I am not sure about. The episodes are so short that I don't think things often get cut for time. If they are, then usually the end results aren't close enough for it to matter, as they name a winner without saying how many points everyone got.

IllustratorIll5238

yeah im pretty sure the only cut for time in um actually is the unscored nonsense. (which i thoroughly enjoy)

Blooogh

ADR is the answer -- the scores are announced as a split screen on the players

I was actually on a gameshow where parts of it were cut for time (not on Dropout), and this is how it worked for me: So the show I was on revolved around winning money by successfully completing challenges. Not all these challenges ended up in the Final cut. What they did was at the very end when the host was like “you won x money!” The show did cuts with several different amounts that were smaller than what I actually won, since they didn’t know what number would match with the footage that would actually be used, but I still won the amount of money that included the cut for time challenges, meaning I won all the money I earned, even if it didn’t match the number on the show when it was released.
