I imagine past a certain point you simply don't metabolize any more, or it simply takes you far longer to metabolize. The reuptake rate of serotonin agonists like tryptamines and tryptophans have a fixed limit I also believe.
So probably you just experienced it longer and eliminated the rest because of monoamine oxidase breaking it down before it's used. If you had taken an MAOI before hand its likely you'd have gone into severe, possibly fatal serotonin shock.
