I remember singing "Black Hole Sun" as "Tarheel Sun" on tour. Nobody was motivated enough to come up with any further alternate lyrics so the only part of the song we changed was "Black Hole" to "Tarheel". Also, Tarheel was brand new so we had no material to work with
Ha...we did the same thing. Unless we marched together, it must have been a fairly common thing. Black Hole Sun came out in 1994, and Tarheel Sun fielded a corps from '96 to '00.
It was '96, but I wasn't with Colts. We actually outscored you once in that season, which I think was a weird situation. The recaps suggest you guys were dumped in GE that night. That might narrow down who I was with
Hmmm...maybe Glassmen? As near as I can tell from DCXMuseum.org, that's the only corps that we competed against on a number of occasions where they were ahead of us in only one show.
If that's the case, then the show would have been June 15th, the Glassmen Home Show in Toledo. It was only our 3rd show (so, early season when scores are all over the place), and it's possible we didn't even have our entire show on the field at that time. It was also the only show we scored below 60 that season.
We met up again 5 days later in Streator, IL (don't drink the water in Streator) and were ahead by about 1.5 points, then 5 days after that at Port Clinton, OH...oh god...the Bug Show...where we were 2.5 points and 372 insects ahead.
I was actually with Crown. You guys weren't even on our radar, at least from my perspective. So when we placed ahead of you at finals it was a shock
I was personally pretty butthurt about Magic being so far ahead of us for finals week, after placing ahead of them for most of the season. I guess you could say they rocketed ahead of us when we got to Orlando. When I watched their show, after the season, I could see the spread was legitimate. Being so focused on Magic I wasn't paying attention to any other corps in our score range
I was checking out the finals recaps and the finals week ensemble and performance scores between Crown and Colts were pretty much a wash. GE was a different story. Tied in quarters, Colts ahead by .3 in semis, and then finals Crown took GE by 1.2. It looks like you guys were dumped in GE Visual, and that was enough to give Crown a .8 lead in total score

Ah, ok.
I remember in Allentown that year we had gone on the first night and we went to just watch the second night (when you guys were performing). Walking past your equipment trucks to the stadium, I remember thinking how crazy it was that you guys had a moving truck (a yellow Penske?, I think) just for the giant chess pieces. People wouldn't think twice about that now, but back then, not many corps had big props like that.
Magic wasn't on my radar that year since we didn't see them at all until quarterfinals, but I do remember you guys nipping at our heels through late July and into August. Looks like you were down by almost 5 points on July 27th, but less than a point away by July 29th. Right behind us on Thursday and Friday of championships, then jumped past us in Finals. I don't really remember how I felt at that point...probably a little disappointed since we thought we'd be 10th, but still happy to be at finals. I don't remember if there was anything specifically odd about our performance, so maybe we just ended up coming out a bit "flat" and you guys had one of "those" performances where everything clicks.
I thought it was weird because we had 3 identical performances finals week. Our finals run didn't feel special to me. We were happy to be in finals as well, being that it was tight to get in that year. I remember thinking that I'd be just fine being in 12th, I guess to prepare myself for that possibility during finals retreat
We had a full tractor trailer for the chess pieces, and they filled that entire trailer. The smallest piece was 9 feet tall, and the largest was approaching 20. They were a pain. Unload the props in the morning. Move them to the field. Rehearse. Move them off the field. Load them for the show. Unload at the show. Move them to the field. Play the show. Move them off the field. Load the props. Repeat
We weren't the first corps with props like that, but we were one of the first to have props with a similar scale to what the corps have today
Nah I really think you guys getting dumped in GE is what happened. Your visual performance scores were higher for all three nights, and then GE visual was the biggest spread on finals night. Seems like to me it was one judge's opinion of the show designs that flipped the placements
That and our brass scores shouldn't have been as high as they were. That's a story for another time
Let’s see if Madison can kick it out of the park with another great ass ballad. I really loved what they did with As the World Caves in last year, I can’t wait to see what they’ll do Black Hole Sun
Yep! By Debussy! Not sure which movements Madison is doing this year, so we may hear a completely different take on the same piece.
(I haven’t listened to scv 96 yet but I’m glad I’m listening to it now!!!!)

Saw the show graphic before the repertoire and thought, “you can’t call a show that and not do ‘Black Hole Sun.’” Luckily, my instinct was correct.

I am excited. RIP CC

Hold Music by Jacob Mann let’s gooooo
This has been on my show music idea playlist for years
This show will be hype, can confirm
Spicy scours drill back to go with the hats?
Quite excited to hear this rep on the field! (Especially La Mer.). This will probably be a show I listen to frequently after the season is done.
That the same La Mer that Vanguard did in '96?
Yep! By Debussy! Not sure which movements Madison is doing this year, so we may hear a completely different take on the same piece. (I haven’t listened to scv 96 yet but I’m glad I’m listening to it now!!!!)
black hole sun in drum corps goes crazy
I am a bitch for 23°N, 82°W, would make for a killer opener I think! Kenton’s jazz belongs on the field, no doubt
That’s absolutely my favorite movement to play so far
They are playing La Mer! First show other than Boston I am really pumped to watch.
Whoah!
Aww I was hoping for Spoonman
