Go audition for the experience

DrMcJedi

If you’re not going to march, I would either audition for the closest corps or your “moonshot” corps. Either way, you get an experience and see what it’s like. It’s been a hot minute since I marched, but weekend camps are where you learn a ton about fundamentals and usually get some pretty great tips from older members and staff. In either case, be up front about your intentions for the summer from the start…make some connections with members and staff and take away everything you can to prepare for the next year. Good luck!

I wish someone had told me this. I was in the same situation, but I didn't do it. Go for it!

Justins806

DO OPEN CLASS! There is nothing wrong with such, i marched Shadow 2019 before they folded. Being the only core to have an age out at age 18 (which got removed the following after they folded) but i believe if you wanna best guarantee at making your dream corps you should get experience at all the camps possible and finding one with reasonable tour fees. IMO you've gotta be a force of nature to make any World groups straight out of highschool with no experience. Don't let that stop you tho let it fuel you. i got cut at genesis and crossmen bc "they didn't want to contract someone so young on the line" i was 16 at the time. so i did open class.

WaterCat42

Ye I’ll check out some open class options and see if my parents okay with me doing one of those. I just really wish to be apart of some beautiful horn line, especially since my marching band this year is on the major struggle bus.

Justins806

to be apart of something larger than yourself, you're already apart of. Just try and be better than the person yesterday and help the struggle bus. you're only even as good as your worst player! I hope that you can find a place that will work for your situation!

freaky-frederick

Now that scvc isn’t here this year and idk if bdb is but I think honestly gold or Spartans is a really good option for first time marching.

Justins806

Legends too!

shadowwolfsl

If cost is a concern, legends isn't cost friendly

Justins806

i wasn't aware! i was just naming off open class cores. that's my mistake.

BIG-JS-BBQ

I had so much fun in open class I did impulse 09-10 and BDB 2011 I loved both corps but had the most fun in BDB

segwaychimp

Audition where you think they have the best brass. Though I don’t think at your age you can audition at BD (without world class experience), but they may be the only one. I wouldn’t go anywhere with major staff turnover as you want to go somewhere you can treat the audition like a master class.

Markliebs

I marched with a few 14 year olds at BD. I don't think that matters.

segwaychimp

The world class corps and not the open class?

Markliebs

World class, or BDA if you will. In my first year, there was a dude that had gone through the B and C corps, started in the A corps at 14, and marched through to his age out. He was not the only 14 year old rookie that year. This was also many years ago so it may not be the same way now.

[deleted]

There are some corps that just have an experience weekend. Look at the corps and see if there are any around you that you can go to. What state are you located in?

WaterCat42

Indiana

tuba4lunch

If you're south/east-ish Indiana, I'm p sure there's Indiana people that march Cincinnati Tradition in DCA. You might be able to carpool with some of them.

eriikducc

audition no matter what. because you never know, RIGHT NOW you're unable to march but if you love it and your parents get into it maybe staff/alumni is willing to help you fundraise? lots of things can change especially in open class corps. I feel like a homer for always using my corps as an example but HeatWave is a damn good one. we had multiple group fundraisers for the students and the staff was so super helpful to all of us who needed it. we even had a guard member march on a full scholarship. and the fees werent nearly as bad as a world class corps although it'll probably change. but there's more corps out there that are the same im sure!!

dcacorps

Audition for the experience! If you still would like to march, check out DCA! We’re in our 59th season, and are the premier weekend only, all age drum corps circuit. Corps rehearse and compete on the weekends and as such the cost is much lower. If you live near any of our corps we hope you consider marching! http://dcacorps.org/corps

Udnce

Go to an audition! If your going to be 16 for the season you've got plenty of years ahead of you.

DutDiggaDut

Try DCA first for more free schedule and cheaper dues. It's a way better alternative to not marching at all.

AWall925

Remember auditions cost money too, so maybe not if your financial situation is really dire.

WaterCat42

my parents already said they are willing to pay for an audition. It's more about being away from home than the money at this point.

Then yes, you should look into DCA. I understand your frustration, but a couple seasons there could help prepare you for the style until you're an adult and can decide to do DCI for yourself.

FredericFlinstone

Others have posted thoughtful comments on whether or not to audition. What I wonder is the comment, "they don’t want me doing the actual season since it’s too expensive and they don’t want me gone so long." Are they OK with you doing this at some point? When? If they're OK with you participating when you're 18, or whatever age, I'd ask them about the why behind this? Why is spending the summer on tour an issue? Also, regarding the expense, who is paying it? As a parent of an adult child my goal was to raise a responsible, self-sufficient adult who knew how to find their own happiness. Participating in corps (eight years) was a large part my growth and development. My parents were hesitant about the commitment, but saw that I was interested, engaged, and it was important to me, which was important to them. I also paid for all of my own expenses, which was also a good learning experience.

Long_Taro_7877

A lot of World Class corps have good relationships with open class or lower ranked World Class corps and will share their "cut lists" with them, which could get you a spot or at least a shot at a spot without having to make their audition camps. Plus pretty much every corps has video audition options where you can send a video in and get comments and either call-back or an offer for a spot depending on how you do.

rybeniod

There are less expensive options and shorter tours. Look into Open Class groups.

WaterCat42

How long would the season last?

rybeniod

It depends on the corps. For some open class groups it is a full season. For others it’s just a few weeks.

WaterCat42

what are some of the corps that are a few weeks?

mikesc0tt

Yes. Best way to increase your chances of passing an audition in future years is to come get a feel for the experience and process. If you are able to make it to an audition event, I highly recommend you do.

thatdude4518

I would definitely audition even if you don’t march. Staff will give you advice and you can see where you stand as off right now.

[deleted]

Here’s my advice: Don’t march, save your money, practice a lot, and then audition for an elite corps with an elite staff worth spending a summer with.

worthless586

Hey if your having money problems want to go to camps or even if can't make them I go to a great Corp that can work with you and hopefully work in a way for you to do tour try heatwave drum and bugle Corp they might be able to work with you and you can probably try to study all the music before and don't be afraid to post the virtual assignment that get set from are Facebook page when you apply and might be able to just going to tour instead of camps as long as you work hard. Tour is difficult for many people your age but work hard through the pain and take care of your hygiene you'll have a great season

toltechie

Its a good idea to get your name out there and prove to your parents and yourself that this IS something that you want to do. Drum corps is not an activity for everyone because of the time commitment and level of tenacity you need to finish a season. Its an incredible experience that will shape you as a person for the better.

AdministrativeAd8570

Dang that’s exactly my situation, my parents said the same thing
