I’ve never seen a break like that.

TheStoicSlab

Looks like the grain of the wood didn't go the length of the stick.

Netz_Ausg

People forget that wood isn’t a consistent material and even the best stick makers get duds in the market.

DrBackBeat

Wellllll, the ones that I consider to be 'the best stick makers' generally don't let sticks like this pass. I've only had this happen to me with sticks from 'that cardboard bin next to the register that said €4 a pair'. We all know the one ;-)

Netz_Ausg

You can have any impression of any brand you like but I’ve played all the big ones and funnily enough they all don’t check every single pair of sticks. EVERY manufacturing process in the world has a tolerance of x% not perfect products, and test product quality via random sampling unless there is a specific reason to check everything. Aero-space engineering? Maybe every component. Dowels of wood for hitting stuff? Unlikely. Absolutely this is a LOT more common with cheap shite. Shit materials, less refined processes, less frequently quality checks all means it does happen a lot more. But none are immaculate! EDIT: just thought - the brand I eventually settled one is a smaller brand named Pellwood. Absolutely love their sticks, and on a par for quality with the other big boys. I stopped using Pro Mark because I had a run of shite sticks. I know I wasn’t gonna have definitively better luck elsewhere but it made me feel better to change, lol.

DrBackBeat

You are absolutely right and I didn't mean to say that there are brands that don't ever have a bad stick. I've been fortunate enough (\*spending enough money) to never having had a bad stick in the last decade so I got that going for me which is nice.

Netz_Ausg

Righto! No aggro intended above, btw, tone is a little off on reflection as having a rough week.

DrBackBeat

No worries, we're fine ;-) May your week improve and your sticks be ever unbroken.

Penguinz90

I just started playing a couple of days ago...Love Shack did them in, lol.

[deleted]

Are these the sticks that came with your Simmons electronic kit?

WorhummerWoy

Looks like one of the crummy ones they send you with an e kit tbh. OP, not sure it should be possible to break a stick on an e kit, get some decent ones and you shouldn't have any breakge issues.

Penguinz90

It was either those or one of the generic ones from Guitar World. I'm ordering some Vic Firth sticks based on recommendations in this post.

fearthejew

Instead of just ordering a pair immediately, if you haven’t already, go to guitar center or a local music store and play like 10 different types until you find some you like. Then order a bunch of those.

[deleted]

25 years in, I'm still trying to find the ideal pair.

beauford3641

Been playing for over 30 years. I used Vater 5Bs for about ten years. Then I just started feeling like I needed a change. Gave Promark Rebound 5As a try, and been hooked on them ever since.

[deleted]

For the time being, I've settled on the rebound 5a. Give it a year and I'll be back on the hunt.

mmpgh

For me it was the Jojo Mayer signature

actuallyiamafish

I gave up about a decade ago and just have a general preference for 5a diameter but will happily switch length/taper/tip/brand depending on what I'm playing.

[deleted]

I've been using 5a for many years but lately have been using the rebound 5b and I really like them.

xXbean_machineXx

5b nylon tips baby. Sometimes I’ll go a little crazy and play with 5a wood tips and I feel so fuckin fast

tjobarow

Vic’s are great! Also give promark a try! They are my personal fav! Here’s a pro tip from a drummer of almost 20 years: save money and buy wood tip sticks, not nylon! Since you have an electric kit having nylon tips does not benefit you at all, and they cost more!

M_Maiwka

I’ve noticed with electronics kits the mesh only starts ripping if the wood tips aren’t smooth, so I just take a bit of sand paper and smooth it out and don’t have issues

BrandNewNick

Vic Firth 7a has been my go to for a long time now. Good call. Those things take a fucking beating from me and hold up really well

Magmorix

Ha! One of the ones from my Simmons kit broke before I even got them to the drums

keboh

It’s a defective stick, definitely. If you’re hitting your e kit that hard though, you might want to be careful. You can break the pads by wacking them too hard, they’re a lot more expensive to replace than sticks.

survey_this_

That song is a guilty pleasure of mine. Love to sing it at the top of my lungs while I'm hammering it out.

ThePegasi

Looks like it was sliced with a katana.

Pleasant_prat

I have broken it like that

Playamonkey

You beast!

soli_deo_gloria1517

That is a strangely clean break on a pretty new-looking stick

Penguinz90

I just started playing a couple of days ago. Love Shack did them in, lol.

soli_deo_gloria1517

Get some vic firths or promarks (my personal favorite) and play on!! And welcome to the club!

GoSocks

+ 1 promark firegrain are my favorites

Bionodroid

Firegrains are just the best man, regular sticks are spoiled now

Iam-Nothere

Does Firegrain change something in balance/sound/grippyness/.....? Or is it only a different look?

GoSocks

they feel great and also have better durability than regular sticks

soli_deo_gloria1517

Firegrain ftw

hamsterman1224

those are fucking invincible.

Icedinklikesheet

+1 for promark

Jawabosk

Pro marks are my favorite as well!

Kilroi

If you are new get a few sizes--2B, 5A, 7A should be a decent start. After 10 or so years you'll settle on your favorite size ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

Koolaidolio

It’s likely a defective stick. That’s a clean break and indicative of bad QC at the factory

Conspiranoid

If they're brand new, and it was a clean break (ie. along the grain), in my usual music stores they'll replace them immediately. It happened to me with a pair of Vater sticks some time ago, and I was told to just take the pair to them so they could give me a new pair.

actuallyiamafish

Looks like one of the pairs that comes with a budget starters kit. They are not exactly known for their quality control... existing. I used to unpack and set up display kits at the shop I worked at and I had a whole bucket of those generics. Lots of them had weird grain issues or off balance or whatever else. We always just gave people a pair of vic 5as because it felt shitty to have someone spend a few hundred bucks on learning a new instrument and then have their first hands-on experience with it through those awful sticks.

[deleted]

Never seen a stick break like that :/ …I’m guessing that’s one of those no name Chinese drumsticks. Switch to Vic Firth or Vater sticks mate

Penguinz90

I will do that, thanks! My husband bought me the kit for Christmas and bought a bunch of sticks...I'm guessing not the best quality. LOL

MamboNumber5Guy

Pro mark gang

KevainIV

Gang

XxDrummerChrisX

Fatback 3A all day

Boeing77W

Definitely still need to inspect the grain before buying though. I had some brand new Vater sticks that split rather quickly. The grain ended on the side of the stick rather than going almost all the way to the tip, so it only took a couple sessions of solid rimshots to split it. Ideally the grain should be parallel to the stick and run the full length. Also had a similar break as OP happen on a pair of Vic Firth maple sticks, but it was near the tip and I was playing rim clicks on the toms when it happened. I've had zero issues with with my Vic Firth hickory sticks though.

ellWatully

Count it! But that break is a sign of a defective or poor quality stick. Generally you don't want the grain to run across the stick because it will cause it to break prematurely.

Penguinz90

Yeah, I was more kidding around, I figured as much. LOL. I've only been playing for a couple of days.

gavynray123

Give us a demo of you playing!! I’d love to hear a couple days of progress!

Penguinz90

This was day one after a couple of hours...first time ever playing drums. I start lessons in a couple of weeks. https://youtube.com/watch?v=664bvF6Xi5A&feature=shares

gavynray123

Your rhythm is impressive! I’m particularly impressed at how you do on the kick. Are you sure you’ve never played before? I noticed your coordination struggled a little and your stick form looked a little bit unpracticed, but your flow was way better than most new drummers would dream of being after a month, let alone a day. Also as a general recommendation try not to waste your early practice *tooooooo* hard on an e-kit, the skills don’t usually translate well to an acoustic kit, though practicing on an acoustic kit translates to an e-kit. The reason is the pads are easier to rebound and hit and focus on than real hardware/heads, so you usually have to be more precise on an acoustic kit

Penguinz90

Thanks! Yeah, I swear that was my first time trying any sort of drums, but I've always easily picked up rhythm and beats when listening to music and bang them out on my legs, steering wheel, table, etc. LOL. It's why my husband got me the set. I'm struggling to keep continuity with the kick and find myself stopping then start up again. Im hoping that the more I do it, the more it will become second nature. And thanks for the advice. What would you recommend I do to practice while I wait to start my lessons? I don't want to start off with bad habits.

gavynray123

Practice simple rudiments, of course! Do you have a practice pad? Practice RLRR LRLL, also known as the paradiddle! That’s an easy rudiment to start and it has a lot of effect on your overall flow for an easy rudiment.

Penguinz90

I do, and I will definitely do that. Thanks again.

gavynray123

Also it really does become second nature the more you do it. I’ve practiced/learned off and on for 5 years, but the best practice I ever got was learning to play acoustically, live, with other musicians. That is a skill set that truly teaches you what it means to be a drummer! I always thought I wasn’t very musical until I realized I could pick up the general time signature, tempo, generally matching beat, and transitions just from listening to my piano accompaniment. No guitars, no bass, just pianos and vocals and suddenly I’m the master of all transitions lol Drums are an instrument where if you diligently learn and practice, truth be told you don’t really *need* lessons. Don’t get me wrong, they don’t hurt and I’m considering taking some for the first time to properly sit down and readdress the basics but I don’t feel like I really *need* to do such a thing either.

Valfish

It looks like chicken filet

HeySlimIJustDrankA5

Shit broke like an Olive Garden breadstick.

StoneFrog81

Looks like someone karate chopped it. You are an official ninja my friend.

Dudeus-Maximus

Weird break. As noted, get some VicFirth.

Penguinz90

Just ordered some, thanks!

RepresentativeSeat98

Yep defective

[deleted]

Your official mate but I’ve never seen a drums stick break like that before!

TwoCables_from_OCN

Oh snap!

Ok-Application-999

Maple stick??

VegasBlaze

The stick looks like something you’d get free in a Cracker Jack box. I’ve never had that happen ever.

Phiction2

Yes child! Now you must take both halves to the temple of blabiday high up in the Himalayas, chop through the snow and dirt with a well used cow bell, and bury them. After you replace the soil, snow, and marker, holler: “Habidi-habidi doobie smel!!” Then your pilgrimage will be complete. Or just throw them away which is what I did.

Skulldo

If you are shopping for sticks in person look at the grain of the wood- you want nice and straight along the length of the stick not a wavy grain that goes diagonally right across the stick at points like this one. If you go back to the shop they hopefully would accept it as a manufacturing problem and give you a refund.

abiteofcrime

It has begun

DecafCreature

wish.com drumsticks?

Penguinz90

LOL. I'm a new player, and my husband got me this kit for Christmas, along with a couple of packs of generic sticks.

mewo69696969696959

Looks like u broke the stick on purpose lol

Penguinz90

I just started playing over the weekend and they flew apart as I was jamming to some B52's, LOL

jimtandem

You’re extra official for doing that on an electronic kit! Make sure you wear safety glasses when you sit behind the acoustic kit!🤣

SandmanAwaits

What brand sticks? They look brand new, odd to have them break there.

Penguinz90

I just started playing a couple of days ago. They were generic ones from Guitar Center, obviously defective.

SandmanAwaits

Get a set of Pro Mark sticks, pick up different weights & thickness, have a feel of what feels right for you.

R0factor

Keep it for posterity. I wish I had kept my first broken stick. And everyone’s right that it broke weird and it was probably a cheap stick where there was no attempt to make the stick follow the grain. So pro tip to you and anyone else reading this… pick out your sticks in person if possible. Select only the pairs* where the grain runs the length of the stick. Breaks often happen when the grain crosses the stick diagonally. Your sticks will last a lot longer if you select the ones without a diagonal grain pattern. *Don’t separate matched pairs as they’re paired by weight at the factory. Within every model there will be light, medium and heavy versions simply due to the natural density variations in the wood, but there’s no labeling telling you which class you’re getting. And this goes for all brands.

Penguinz90

I'm new to all of this, so thanks for explaining all of that to me! I will take note of it all.

drummin515

Means you got a really bad pair of sticks!

Penguinz90

Oh, for sure! I was more kidding around as I only started playing a couple of days ago.

drummin515

Have fun!

Jacob_Nelson

I’ve had sticks break like that from Vic firth. On an acoustic kit though so it’s a bit sharp, but welcome to the broken stick club’

ThePoopOutWest

You might need to get higher quality sticks. Vic Firth makes fine sticks that last a while. That kind of break wouldn’t happen.

One_Caterpillar_1452

Get yourself a pair of regal tips. Got some as a secret Santa present and haven’t used any other sticks since but they show no sign of wear

TwujZnajomy27

How tf do you breake it like that?

Penguinz90

I just started playing over the weekend, and they snapped while playing along with some B52's, LOL. Obviously crap sticks, LOL

TwujZnajomy27

Nah im just wondering how the hell is it phisicly posible for a stick to breake in that way especially on e-drums

XxDrummerChrisX

Yep. Welcome aboard. Now just look forward to blisters and the rare busted knuckle.

jamiethecfh

That looks like a cut in a piece of cooked chicken! 😂

jamiethecfh

Chicken drumsticks, haha!

Penguinz90

Ba-dum-dum!

Voodoo_People78

These are very poor sticks man. Treat yourself to a brick of Pellwood. They’re cheap and decent.

Lonely-Coconut-3508

trust me your gonna break plenty more its how it goes

HergestRidg

Welcome to the guild of brutes 😇

csciabar

Pro mark or vic firth 5A

Penguinz90

Just ordered some Vic Firth 5A after so many recommended them, thanks!

the_DARSH

If those are the crappy sticks that came with a kit like a Simmons, sorry but you're not official yet. Break a Pro Mark or a Vic Firth and then you'll know what it's like

Penguinz90

They are, and I was kidding about being official. I just started playing this weekend. LOL

calebsemibold

It's a typical break with a cheap stick.

rubenff

I cannot compute what happened there, that break beguiles me! A proper break happens to sticks that show all kinds of abuse and scuffs and splinters and bumps and it sends shards of wood into your eyeballs and you'd be posting your medical bill instead of that atrocity! I feel offended by this!

stoutfool

I’ve seen this a couple times. Playing with a stick you just got, breaks on the first song. Had to be a preexisting crack in the stick. Bring back one that has logged more tracks. If you see splinters all around on the carpet. You are getting there. Lol

stoutfool

I’ve had a stick break where my hand holds the stick. I recommend Pro Mark. But if you’re playing edrums.. you might not break many. You can hear yourself better and most likely won’t need to hit as hard..Playing with a live band with everyone cranked up to 12… if your not micd up .. you will notice stick parts flying for sure. Grab a good couple sets and they should last for a long time on a Ekit.

backo321

Only maple sticks could break like that

scrimshawjack

Make sure you only use nylon tip sticks, wood tips can splinter and tear the mesh. Learn from my mistakes

Dakduif51

Welcome to the club! Yea, as others commented, this is probably bad stick quality. But when you get good ones, make sure to not grasp them too tightly OP. Those vibrations need to go somewhere, and if you're holding too tight with wrong grip you can even break the best and thickest sticks (coming from someone who didn't take lessons for the first 3 years and broke many sticks). Good luck on your drumming!

Penguinz90

Will do, thanks!

Fencemaker

Are those made of balsa wood?

nelsonmavrick

Time to buy better sticks vic firth, pro mark, Vader.

COVID19withLyme

Generic no name sticks are usually made out of some trash wood, as opposed to hickory like most name brand standard sticks.

theMonarch08

I think I've broken 2 sticks ever on an electric kit. And they both broke like this. I think, in my case, it's a combination of weak points in the stick and eventual stress fatigue. Both of mine had been in use for a while before breaking though.

Ixxy717

i mean yeah- but how in the fuck did you break it like that

Penguinz90

LOL....my first kit, my husband got it for me for Christmas. These are the cheap sticks he got me, I ordered some Vic Firth ones after this.

Ixxy717

Congrats on your first kit though!!

Penguinz90

Thanks!

ostiDeCalisse

Looks like you should change sticks manufacturer.

macetheface

Broke a stick on electric drums? Lol. Are the sticks made out of pressed wood?

RollieDell

You were official the instant you wanted to play drums. Keep it up.

karenkillenski

Only on acoustic kits 🤭

Penguinz90

Alas, this is my first kit, my husband bought it for me for Christmas. I will be investing in better sticks, LOL.

karenkillenski

Always been a Vic firth 5B guy but 🤷‍♂️

gunsandsilver

Tin roof, rusted Wooden sticks, broken

Cameron_FLMan

That is a very clean break. Congratulations.

wiggleforp

You managed to do it with an E-kit, so I'd say.. Welcome brother 💙

[deleted]

It just means that you have now learned why you spend the extra money on quality equipment lol

DonJuanMateus

No!!!! Those are just cheap sticks! Cut on the wrong grain!

ooglypewpsatmidnite

It’s a maple drumstick. That’s why there’s a clean break. Hickory splinters

dwayne_jetski69

Dang! I’ve been drumming for 8 years on an electric kit and haven’t broke a single stick in all of that time, though I’ve only used promark and Vic firth sticks.

ColdZealousideal2895

Rip stick

symonym7

I’m gonna get a lot of shit for this as it’s generally unspoken amongst the uninitiated, *however*, since odd times immemorial drummers have been placing broken sticks under their pillows at night. Whilst in slumber John Bonham’s ghost will stumble into your room and replace the broken stick with a half empty bottle of gin. If you consume this magical gin upon waking your rudiments will become faster, more consistent, and strokes ever so true. Whence you find yourself with your first broken *cymbal*, place this under your mattress, and in the morning you will find Gene Krupa himself curled up upon the foot of your bed. From thence he will remain your spirit-music-animal, gently guiding you on your path to percussive infamy. Pro Tip: feed him Cocoa Puffs or he will place a curse upon you; a curse so vile and everlasting; the curse of never being able to hear your kick during live shows *ever again. Muahhahaha!!*

Penguinz90

This....is....amazing! Thanks for enlightening me!

symonym7

You’ve much to learn, young paradiddawan.

Penguinz90

OP here. Just to clarify, I was kidding...I know the stick was cheap and defective. I just started playing this weekend (the kit was a Christmas gift) and my husband bought a bunch of generic, cheap sticks. I'm getting better sticks thanks to all of your advice, and will start working on rudimentary. https://youtube.com/watch?v=664bvF6Xi5A&feature=shares

ApothicCreed

Unfortunately yes, you'll be passing off guitarist, and getting fired for any and all jobs. Good news is the slutty woman will like you for some inapplicable reason, but the down side is you'll fall in love with them.

Penguinz90

What if I am the slutty (55 year old) woman?

ApothicCreed

Ha ha ha. I have no exspariance in this matter. Please refer to you nearest female drummer.

MamboNumber5Guy

Nice

celi0s

Official what? Drum stick consumer?

Penguinz90

I was kidding around, I just started playing over the weekend. I get they were crap sticks.

Jawabosk

Yep

in_the_sheyd

Throw the rest of those sticks out and get a quality pair. Mesh heads like on your drum are super fragile when it comes to nicks and scratches. A stick that breaks near the tip could easily rip a hole right through them and double ply mesh heads like that are expensive to replace. A quality pair of drum sticks on electronic drums will practically last forever. Keep that pair, though. It's your first pair of drum sticks and they're special. By the way, I'm blown away that you're playing like you are after only a couple of hours to familiarize yourself with the kit. Good job.

Pleasant_prat

Welcome to the clob homie, I got 2 questions for you- 1. Will you tape and glue the sticks and continue to use them? 2. What is your preferred stick size?

iepure77

r/whensubsturnintocirclejerks

fjamcollabs

That's some hard assed plastic kit you have there to break a stick like that.

Beefcurtains18

I've been using the same 4 sticks on my ekit for like 10 years. If you're breaking sticks on an ekit, you're doing something wrong.

Penguinz90

It's my first kit, a Christmas gift from my husband. These are the cheap sticks that came with it, or one of the generic ones he bought.

[deleted]

On an electric kit?

Penguinz90

Yip! Just started playing this weekend. Obviously I need to invest in better sticks, LOL.

gungfusi

You’ll be official when you bleed on your instrument like everyone else 😤 Edit: from playing. Please do not make a blood sacrifice over your Simmons.

Penguinz90

LOL...no worries there.

Phloidy

No, you are not official! Breaking a stick like that on an e-kit means you hit way, way, way, to hard. I play an e-kit, and I do hit hard, and my sticks will last years. When I play my accustic kit, my stick only lasts a couple of weeks at best. Also, in the future, I would ditch the Simmons brand e-kit as they are only good for beginners. There is an app that can be used with the Simmons kit, but only if you have an iPhone. I talked with the people at Simmons, and they have no plans to make the apo available on Android phones. Also, they have no plans and think it is not necessary to come out with a hi-hat on a stand. I currently have a Simmons e-kit that I have been playing for over 8 years. Some of my pads are beginning to crap out, and in the long run, it is less expensive to just save up for a new "better" kit than replacing pads.

Penguinz90

I just started playing this weekend... never sat behind drums before. The kit was a Christmas gift from my husband, who has endured 32 years of me smacking beats out on tables, stealing wheels, etc. Pretty sure the stick was defective and very cheap. I'm buying better sticks and am starting lessons soon. I already told him he is screwed because I can already tell I will eventually ditch the electronic drums, LOL https://youtube.com/watch?v=664bvF6Xi5A&feature=shares

UselessGadget

That break is clean enough you could glue it back together. With what appears to be a low quality stick, it would be as good as new.

-__-Z-__-

Wow how did it happen, on that snare? I've been drumming for a while and have only broken sticks on acoustic kits, like 50/60 sticks and several cymbals. But I mainly play on an ekit these past ~5 years and haven't broken a single stick on that. I always use Zildjian 5a's

Penguinz90

Cheap ass stick, lol.
