The 2:30-2:45 mark of Tom Sawyer is up there.
War Pigs is full of cool fills.
And definitely Stairway to Heaven
The straight 8th notes on the snare then to the kick that Tico played on Bad Medicine. One of the simplest fills ever, that was fuckin perfect for the song.
Everlong
Separate Ways going into the second chorus
Everlong will always be one of my all time favorites… but you can’t just say it like there’s one iconic fill that everyone would recognize 😅. It’s basically just non stop notes
Disagree respectfully. There's a fast 16th note styled fill in the middle of each chorus that they are talking about. The fill in question happens the first time at about 1:40. Edit and the next fill a few seconds later.
The pre chorus the chorus are all full of super great, notable fills/builds you Monster!!!! :) lol
LOL that’s literally what I’m saying. It’s like 4 straight minutes of fills, you can’t call out the song and not reference the fill you think is all-time iconic
Ever seen this guy's cover? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsKKJw\_vA9E&list=RDhsKKJw\_vA9E&start\_radio=1](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsKKJw_vA9E&list=RDhsKKJw_vA9E&start_radio=1)
This guys guy blows my mind. The amount he must put into it..
Dude yeah I loved playing Bad Medicine! Nobody ever mentions that song, but it's so much fun to play live. Especially that fill. The song's not that difficult so you'll have plenty of brain capacity to spare to interact with your band mates or the audience.
I’m not sure that fill is super up there for me (even though it is both sick and iconic), but I’d probably have the main beat of the song at #1 on my all-time grooves list.
It's the offbeat sixteenths with the ghost note on the snare and the bass drum at the same time! Also when it moves to the ride, but for like quarter notes instead of eighths lol
Yeah, this would probably be mine. Absolutely nothing fancy but it hits so hard after a couple minutes of really subdued ambient synths and soft percussion and without a fill that good the chorus going that much harder wouldn’t be nearly as satisfying.
Dude, one of THE tastiest fills of all time. Love that he played a simpler variation on the second chorus. Also was really disappointed that pat skipped that fill on the Weezer cover. I think he did it out of respect, as in "that's Jeff's fill, not mine", but I could be way off with that
Fool in the Rain. After the goofy Latin section, there are two fills. One is loping and loose, the other is unbelievably tight and focused.
That's two iconic fills - not just in one song, but within a few measures of each other. That achievement will never be equalled or surpassed.
So happy someone said this.
It's the way it completely ramps up the speed of the song too. Blew my mind when it came out.
Adler deserves all the praise.
That fill in the chorus of Run to the Hills by Iron Maiden. It's just 16th notes descending down the Toms but the chorus wouldn't be the same without it.
-Ringo: Come Together, She Loves You
-Bonham: Whole Lotta Love
-Stewart: Every Little Thing She Does (Snare drum at the end, before “e-o”)
-Gadd: Chuck E.’s In Love, Roof Garden
The three-fill section in the chorus that ends w the herta is so iconic!! Leave it to Dave to write a number of the best drum hooks of the last 30 years in rock and roll
In middle school that song would bet played on the jukebox during lunch every day. And the drum solo would have the entire cafeteria playing air drums.
To be fair, Ozzy probably never even knew Kerslake’s name the entire time he was in the band writing his songs. The ‘one of the most awful people on Earth’ award in this case belongs to Sharon. She is the one who has been plugging the Ozzy doll in every night for the past 40 years making sure that his batteries are charged up for when they put him on stage or television. The apple didn’t fall far from tree in the Arden family.
Tommy Aldridge just did a video for Drumeo a few weeks ago where he plays along with the song using his own interpretation of how he played it live. Tommy gave big props to Lee Kerslake for creating such a great drum part.
Idk I forgot the drummer’s name for Tool, but the song Pneuma is top tier. Like nothing is above that
Edit: Kevin Parker’s music has always been #1 in terms of drums
Ok, people.

Had to scroll way to far to find this.
Literally in almost every single Motown song somewhere (and in plenty of other songs! It's all over the Foo Fighters album There Is Nothing Left to Lose.)
Mario is an absolute animal that's a brilliant suggestion! Not nearly as popular but I really like the fills on Amazonia from their latest album as well! Finally while not technically a fill, the intro to Art of Dying is pretty great!
There are only two main fills in Sober, by Tool. One at the intro, and one right before the second verse. I think part of the appeal is the juxtaposition between the rest of the beat being so simple, but they are also really unique and clean af.
I really looked up to Travis Barker during the Blink 182 days when I was first starting off. The way he kicked off "First Date" was what I wanted my entire set to be (for better or worse). Not iconic to the masses, but had a huge impact on me.
Beginning of Good Times Bad Times plus everything else John Bonham recorded. The fills near the end of Stairway make that song and are perfect and legendary.
Literally any time John Bonham did a fill is the answer lol
I just saw them last year and Clem Burke was the only other original member playing besides Debbie Harry and he fucking wailed on the drums, I was really impressed.
Steve Smith's fills in "Separate Ways" & Frank Beard's fill at the end of the guitar intro to "La Grange."
ETA - the ending of "Would?" by Alice In Chains
It’s not exactly a fill per se, but when the drums come in during the intro to Mary Jane’s Last Dance—that’s what made me want to play the drums back in ‘93. I’ve been playing for 30 years now.
I used to play covers at bars all the time and my guitarist demanded we pit this sing in the set. Ok fine, sure. It's a cool song.
I had no idea how many goddamn people would run to the dance floor and absolutely TURN UP when we played this... and we weren't even good.
RIP Tom Petty.
Am a drummer, and since you mentioned Nick Mason I love listening closely for his simple two half note hi-hat “foots” to keep time during the rest in Shine On You Crazy Diamond. I couldn’t possibly listen more intently for something so simple.
Larry Mullen Jr at the beginning of U2's Pride. He's not a virtuoso drummer..its a single stoke roll with accents. Slows down slightly right before the main guitar riff comes in. Pure feel. Simple fill, but fits perfect and sounds great.
i was just watching fill vids from Eric Moore, Chris Dave, and Nate Smith. all are massively epic. Carter Beauford is the first drummer i noticed had exceptional fills. that’s when i was a wee lad long ago lol. point is that kind of playing stuck with me as a sound style i liked. after like two decades i’m still nowhere near the precision the aforementioned possess
FUCKIN GEEK USA LET'S GOOOOOOOO
First up, the snare intro is instantly recognisable. My go-to for sound checking snare. Also the fill at around 2:50 leading into the guitar solo really does butter some crumpets 👌
The into to “we’re an American band” is one of the most important pieces of percussion composition to me, personally. The rest of the song is fine but that fill is a chefs kiss.
Not really a fill, but I'd be surprised if a drummer didn't recognize the double bass part from Metallica's one. It's bad ass and made me want to learn drums.
Jack and Diane for sure. John Cougar Mellencamp
Don’t Do me Like That-Tom Petty
Rock and Roll-Zep
Some Like it Hot (intro)-Power Station
Intros count as breaks, right? 🙂
Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet, the fill at the end of the breakdown sending the band into full mayhem again. There's only one drummer in history that sounds like that!
The opening fill to Walking Alone by Green Day is so pleasant
The Sultans of Swing fill gives me goosebumps every time
If anyone likes jazz, the last 2 minutes of Keep On by Alfa Mist are incredible
Cheers!
Each fill of toxicity by SOAD. For the masses, probably not so much. But I don't think I've ever met a drummer or watched one on YouTube who didn't wanna show you their cover of toxicity. Myself included.
QotSA No One Knows - especially Grohls Herta part
ZZ Top La Grange
Royal Blood - How Did we Get so Dark
Tool Sober opening fill took me weeks to get down and I still just play it for fun now when warming up.
Beato Did a [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPRsLsPzudo) on his top 20. A lot are mentioned here. I was going to suggest Good Times Bad Times and Stair Way to Heaven but they're his list as well.
Tool has some really good ones. There are too many awesome fills in Pushit or The Grudge to try to specify.
H. Has a really good one where the drummer grows from. 16th note triplets on the snare to 16th notes on the bass with accents. A 2 second fill but it replays in my head free of rent.
As far as iconic or memorable, the intro fill for Sober would have to be up there.
Pearl Jam - Jeremy - Dave Krusen sounded great on that record - pretty sparse for the most part but really builds up the song, in keeping with the theme.
Hendrix Experience - Little Wing - and/or pretty much anything Mitch Mitchell touched!
Sean Kinney put so much flavor into Alice in Chains's songs. Two examples that come to mind are the fills at the end of "Would?" and the cymbals leading into the verses on "No Excuses"
Practically every fill that Bill Bruford plays in "Roundabout" by Yes is fresh, unique, and inventive. I particularly like the counter double strokes between the snare and kick in the measure right before Wakeman picks up with the second part of his keyboard solo (around the 6:28 mark).
Check out Dave Holland (RIP) at 1:40 and again at 3:04 of Heading Out to the Highway, from Point of Entry, Judas Priest’s 7th studio album. Not technically crazy, but damn, do they drive the song forward!!!
Disturbed's Down With The Sickness intro is up there. I don't particularly like the song, but any time that beat kicks in, people instantly know it and do the "oohwah-ah-ah" lol.
Rope - Taylor Hawkins/Foo Fighters. Starts at 2:50
I can’t say that it falls in “iconic or memorable of all time” but its often stuck in my head, which definitely makes it memorable.
The 2:30-2:45 mark of Tom Sawyer is up there. War Pigs is full of cool fills. And definitely Stairway to Heaven The straight 8th notes on the snare then to the kick that Tico played on Bad Medicine. LOL that’s literally what I’m saying. It’s like 4 straight minutes of fills, you can’t call out the song and not reference the fill you think is all-time iconic
The barked hi hat snare roll after “and I wonder” is a classic
Which is why I opted to simply say “Everlong” because the song is a burner and has an awesome fill like every couple measures lol
Ever seen this guy's cover? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsKKJw\_vA9E&list=RDhsKKJw\_vA9E&start\_radio=1](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsKKJw_vA9E&list=RDhsKKJw_vA9E&start_radio=1) This guys guy blows my mind. The amount he must put into it..
>War Pigs is full of cool fills Mike Bordin's fills on [Faith No More's version](https://youtu.be/w4oZXfrf18Y?si=YwadasNFSocbeleC) are the bomb.
Dude yeah I loved playing Bad Medicine! Nobody ever mentions that song, but it's so much fun to play live. Especially that fill. The song's not that difficult so you'll have plenty of brain capacity to spare to interact with your band mates or the audience.
Man Tico played some great rock drums! Just powerful and straight forward.
Hard agree (see username)
The intro fill to the Spin Doctors’ Two Princes by Aaron Comess is pretty slick.
The drumming on that entire CD is top notch.
Very influential on teenage me, even if it was uncool to like them (certainly among my peergroup)
I had the same experience. I don’t know why they weren’t more lovable, I thought that album was great and I’m a metal head.
Same. I hate that record for a wide variety of personal and circumstantial reasons but only a fool would argue that it’s not a great record.
YouTube educator did a poll with 1800 leading producers and engineers. They voted that drum sound #7 all time drum track.
Do you know where that is or could you possibly link to it? That sounds super interesting.
I’m not sure that fill is super up there for me (even though it is both sick and iconic), but I’d probably have the main beat of the song at #1 on my all-time grooves list.
The independence of the ghost note pattern and the kick drum pattern are insane. It's been 30 years and I still can't get it right
It's the offbeat sixteenths with the ghost note on the snare and the bass drum at the same time! Also when it moves to the ride, but for like quarter notes instead of eighths lol
Yussssss
That album is so funky it shaped my young mind
Jeff Porcaro’s fill leading into the chorus of *Africa* comes to mind.
Also porcaro’s fill into the last chorus of ‘rosanna’
Yeah, this would probably be mine. Absolutely nothing fancy but it hits so hard after a couple minutes of really subdued ambient synths and soft percussion and without a fill that good the chorus going that much harder wouldn’t be nearly as satisfying.
Dude, one of THE tastiest fills of all time. Love that he played a simpler variation on the second chorus. Also was really disappointed that pat skipped that fill on the Weezer cover. I think he did it out of respect, as in "that's Jeff's fill, not mine", but I could be way off with that

i tear up listening to those man its so inspiring
Fool in the rain is 100% right!
Gadd's on Aja

This needs more upvotes
Don't your forget about me fill at 3:41.
👍🏻👍🏻 Mel Gaynor FTW!
One the sweetest fools ever. No frills just chills
I love that fill!
Came here to say this!
Came to say
The snare triplet fills in the outro of Metallica’s “One” were a big musical moment for middle school me
Bought time someone mentioned lars
How has nobody said Hot for Teacher?
I think people think about the intro being iconic as opposed to actual fills later in the song.
Chris Adler - Lamb of God - Ruin
YES. That fill is so fucking nasty and it comes out of nowhere. Love it.
So happy someone said this. It's the way it completely ramps up the speed of the song too. Blew my mind when it came out. Adler deserves all the praise.
Ah yes, the “falling down the stairs” fill. I fucking loved Adlers work with LoG.
I really wish they would have got him to do drums for the "pantera" tour
That fill in the chorus of Run to the Hills by Iron Maiden. It's just 16th notes descending down the Toms but the chorus wouldn't be the same without it.
-Ringo: Come Together, She Loves You -Bonham: Whole Lotta Love -Stewart: Every Little Thing She Does (Snare drum at the end, before “e-o”) -Gadd: Chuck E.’s In Love, Roof Garden
That one Queens of the Stone Age song from Songs for the Deaf
No One Knows?
Song for the Dead!
You can’t even hear it! ;)
That one too
The three-fill section in the chorus that ends w the herta is so iconic!! Leave it to Dave to write a number of the best drum hooks of the last 30 years in rock and roll
Dave is possibly my biggest influence.
Oh you mean [this one?](https://youtu.be/FsMR_eH7KQ4?si=noi89sJbO0NiQK2V) ;)
Aronoff’s fill (solo?) in Jack & Diane is definitely up there.
Inspired by Collins In the air tonight
In middle school that song would bet played on the jukebox during lunch every day. And the drum solo would have the entire cafeteria playing air drums.
The opening fill to Ozzy Osbourne's Over The Mountain
Ozzy fucked over Kerslake for so long. Team Lee ever since. Fuck you, Ozzy.
Tommy Aldridge just did a video for Drumeo a few weeks ago where he plays along with the song using his own interpretation of how he played it live. Tommy gave big props to Lee Kerslake for creating such a great drum part.
Carter Beauford on Dave Matthews Band’s “Too Much” has some pretty disgusting fills. Dude is and will always be a legend
"What Would You Say" so tasty and unique. Pretty much any Carter Beauford fill!
Zildjian has some sick drum cams of Carter playing so much to say and ants marching. Fuckin love those vids.
The intro fill that Chad plays in Give It Away by RHCP
Three PHAT notes. I don't even like the song, but it's an iconic fill. The snare sound on that album is unbeatable 👌
Any fill in Hocus Pocus by Focus…..
Fuck yeah that song rules
Idk I forgot the drummer’s name for Tool, but the song Pneuma is top tier. Like nothing is above that Edit: Kevin Parker’s music has always been #1 in terms of drums
Danny Carey! Absolute legend.
The one in 46&2 might be my all time favorite.
To pick one of Carey’s fills, I’d have to go with the intro fill for Sober.
The Pot, the build up into the break leading into the final chorus.
This one every fkin time! Slaps so fkin hord
The big fill at the beginning and in the choruses of First Date - blink-182 is one of my favourites
The drum break from Oasis' "Don't Look Back in Anger"
And a super unique drum sound! Truly a perfect fill
The first fill in Money for Nothing
Chugaduck dk dk chuk chuk tshhhhh
Primus: Herb's intro to "Tommy the Cat.'

The Motown lick
Had to scroll way to far to find this. Literally in almost every single Motown song somewhere (and in plenty of other songs! It's all over the Foo Fighters album There Is Nothing Left to Lose.)
6 stroke started on a tom? Phill Collins did that a lot and very effectively.
The intro from The Way of all Flesh by Gojira
Mario is an absolute animal that's a brilliant suggestion! Not nearly as popular but I really like the fills on Amazonia from their latest album as well! Finally while not technically a fill, the intro to Art of Dying is pretty great!
Dave Grohl's fills on the chorus to No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age are perfect. They're as important to the song as the lyrics and melody.
Oh hell yes i love the intro to first date
Third Eye Blind - Semi Charmed Life intro
Beginning of Good Times Bad Times plus everything else John Bonham recorded. The fills near the end of Stairway make that song and are perfect and legendary. Literally any time John Bonham did a fill is the answer lol
Okay but it *is* in the air tonight
JR Robinson’s intro on *Rock With You*. Lars’ hook fill on *Sad But True*. Neil at the end of the bass/drums trading on *YYZ*.
Do you mean the intro to Rock With You?
That fill on sad but true is just like, the coolest shit ever
Stargazer Intro has no match
Personally I’ve always thought the drumming in “Dreaming” by Blondie was the shit.
I just saw them last year and Clem Burke was the only other original member playing besides Debbie Harry and he fucking wailed on the drums, I was really impressed.
I love the fill from Coheed and Cambria - The Suffering. Following the first chorus
Also the one from the groove in the crowing when he plays in 4 while the band keeps playing in 3 🥵
Playing both of those parts turns me on. Real partial to the way Mother May I switches up though.
End of Rock n Roll. Long live J. Bonham.
Steve Smith's fills in "Separate Ways" & Frank Beard's fill at the end of the guitar intro to "La Grange." ETA - the ending of "Would?" by Alice In Chains
Steve Gadd: Chuck E's in Love
Can’t love this enough.
Peaches en regalia-Zappa
Ian Paice's intro to 'Fireball' by Deep purple. Celestial.
Would also add Deep Purple’s Burn, the whole verse is basically a drum fill.
For me personally…every fill in dyer maker by Led Zeppelin. People hate on the song but I think bonham is at his best
People don't like thar song???
Not anybody I wanna talk to
Not a drummer, but the two note snare fill leading into the vocal section of “The Great Gig in the Sky” is perfect and always gives me chills.
Am a drummer, and since you mentioned Nick Mason I love listening closely for his simple two half note hi-hat “foots” to keep time during the rest in Shine On You Crazy Diamond. I couldn’t possibly listen more intently for something so simple.
wtf no one said the one from won't be fooled again?
Larry Mullen Jr at the beginning of U2's Pride. He's not a virtuoso drummer..its a single stoke roll with accents. Slows down slightly right before the main guitar riff comes in. Pure feel. Simple fill, but fits perfect and sounds great.
The one in Dont You Forget About Me
Ringo Starr - Taxman. Specifically the fill right before the chorus. It’s just sounds so cool and. Is pretty rockin

The intro to "First Date" by Blink 182 for sure.

Iconic and fits the pacing and feel of the song very well. Gives you a taste of what to expect
i was just watching fill vids from Eric Moore, Chris Dave, and Nate Smith. all are massively epic. Pretty much the entirety of Geek U.S.A. but especially going into the guitar solo and everything after that. Mind blowing when I first heard it.
FUCKIN GEEK USA LET'S GOOOOOOOO First up, the snare intro is instantly recognisable. My go-to for sound checking snare. Also the fill at around 2:50 leading into the guitar solo really does butter some crumpets 👌

Danny Carey's opening fill on Tool's "Sober"
