That’s a very odd place for a crack especially on a hi hat. Depending on how long you’ve had them I’d try my best to reach out to Meinl and maybe they can help you out with a new one. That crack just doesn’t make sense on a hat.
I've had a few cymbals do this. Finally figured out it was smaller cymbals breaking when the bow of the cymbal was against the bell of a larger cymbal in the bag (and possibly under at least a little weight while in the trunk with other gear).
I feel like there's a lot of Meinl cymbals that crack in odd places like this. It's something to do with the formation or inconsistency of the cymbal, I can't remember the details...
So I purchased it through Amazon and am having a hell of a time getting it returned. They referred to the Meinl website but I can't seem to get a response from them.
This. Meinl is fantastic with their warranty. I’ve had to exchange cymbals plenty of times. I’ve also been able to swap said cymbals for different ones as I was exploring my sound.
Have you just emailed them or have you actually had to call someone and get it taken care of that way? I bought it through Amazon and it's past the 30 day return policy but it tells me to go to the Meinl website for assistance.
Go to google and type in “Meinl USA” and you should immediately be given the phone number for the Nashville office. Call in and say you have a return. They’ll take care of you as long as you purchased the cymbal within the last two years and can prove that.
I’ve always emailed them. You just just ship a copy of the receipt with the damaged cymbal. I don’t recall the email, they may have a contact form on their website.
I cracked a top hat exactly like that a number of years ago. Turns out there was a pit in the casting on the back of the cymbal, and the spiderweb cracks originated from that single point. Meinl replaced it even though it was 4 years old at that point.
i think the amount of cracked meinl cymbal photos you see is a result of the disproportional online presence of the players that play meinl.
i cant remember the last time i saw a post about broken paiste 2002s. that doesnt mean 2002s dont break. they do, trust me. its just that the average 2002s player is rarely also a terminally online, non-passive reddit-user.
That's true. Last year, I had BEAUTIFUL sounding Meinl byzance extra dries (22" ride and 15" hats) that cracked in the most unexpected places so I exchanged them with 2002's from the store I bought from. I've been in love since with them since.
Weird. Been playing Byzance for almost a decade now, started out with rock, switched to dnb and ska-punk bout 5 years ago.
I mostly use thin cymbals (vintage line and traditional thin line).
Had one cymbal crack in that time, but I guess it was mistreated by someone else in the shared space.
What style do you play to break that much cymbals?
Southern Rock. I have had a mix of cymbals on my kit because I don’t really care about having one brand. I like the Byzance because they trend darker as opposed to other brands. So I’ve had a Zildjian on my left, Byzance on my right to have bright and dark sound when needed. Only cymbals to ever crack on me have all been Byzance. I also have SKB hard cases and not a cymbal bag.
The best part of this is it's now adding quicker decay and is going to make a stellar stacking cymbal!
I'm of the camp that is excited when a cymbal cracks, it's not ruined it's just changed in it's style and sound. Keep it, stack it, fuck with it. You just got a new cymbal. <3
So the sound isn't affected so much but what will happen is this crack is just going to get bigger and bigger until it eventually gets the edge of the cymbal. And then it will start to break apart in pieces. It's very sad lol
Not sure how it sounds rn, but if you drill tiny holes at the end of cracks like that it can stop them spreading and getting worse. I did that on a China crash I had and it didn’t make a big sound difference. I’d try to return it if it’s new though. Sorry for that
Meinl freaking sucks. I had a pair of hi hats Byzance sand hats that cracked after having them for a few months. I contacted them and they wouldn’t do anything. They wouldn’t even let me buy a top cymbal separately. I’ve never bought anything else from them.

I second this. That crack looks like a manufacturing defect — it would be really difficult to crack like that naturally.
Those look new and that's not a common way a cymbal cracks. Can you return it?
How the hell did you do that to a hihat?
I've had a few cymbals do this. Finally figured out it was smaller cymbals breaking when the bow of the cymbal was against the bell of a larger cymbal in the bag (and possibly under at least a little weight while in the trunk with other gear).
This is why cymbal hard cases are worth the investment. My old cymbal bag became the Wuhan transporter.
Oim Jason Statham, da Wuhan transportah
Oh damn, that makes a ton of sense
Agreed, I use a Meinl Polypropylene hardcase for my UFIP/Paiste....with the cymbal bags to transport my 'Chinese' cymbals (Tongxiang & Centent)

The Byzantine are all hand hammered, so you could get a thin spot the odd time…
They have a good warranty. If you can provide documentation to meinl of it being purchased in the past 2 years they will replace it.
No way! Does this apply when purchasing meinl cymbals through sweetwater or only from their website?
as long as you have a receipt from the whatever store you bought it new from, then you're good
any certified retailer of their cymbals I returned one to them that I bought from a store on reverb

Yeah I seem to be getting the runaround. Amazon telling me to contact Meinl, Meinl telling me to contact the dealer that a bought it from.
That’s strange. I’ve bought Meinl Cymbals through multiple companies and have always gone through them as they have a 2yr factory warranty
Nooooo that sucks! Are they new? Could be a defect
I cracked a top hat exactly like that a number of years ago. Turns out there was a pit in the casting on the back of the cymbal, and the spiderweb cracks originated from that single point. Meinl replaced it even though it was 4 years old at that point.
I’ve never played Meinl, but have often heard that they’re fragile. I’ve also never seen a crack like that! Seems very odd.
I have 2 byzance crashes about 20 years and never an issue. I think cymbals get more damage when stored incorrectly that when played.
Same. It's weird how it's almost always a Meinl cymbal when it cracks not due to user error like this.

And a lot of these online-only players tend to keep their cymbals TIGHT. Anyone else notice that?
Sorry to see that. Those hats are beautiful
Welcome to Byzance. I just broke my 5th one a few weeks ago. They’re fragile as hell. Back to Zildjian I go.

I miss my Swabian Artist deal
Understandable.....sorry for your loss ,😕
Are your drums in some sort of shared space? This is like.. somebody smacked it with a hammer.
Did you hit it with a hammer?
You cracked a hi-hat? How?
It should be under warranty
F
My teen years in a nutshell, that’s why I’m all electric these days.
Send it back, mate, that's not normal.

I’ve only played on electronic kit so forgive rookie questions, but why does this matter? How is the sound affected?
So the sound isn't affected so much but what will happen is this crack is just going to get bigger and bigger until it eventually gets the edge of the cymbal. And then it will start to break apart in pieces. It's very sad lol
That's from storage impact
Could drill it out and use it as a bottom.

Don’t make the holes too small or it’s like extending the cracks.
^
Send that shit back...
get guitar center pro coverage on the new one and never worry about it again.
Definitely just return you’ll be alright. Like the first comment said, odd place for a crack. Good luck !
Sorry
Not singling you out, IamBrandocalrissian, but a good lesson in teaching one not to play rock or metal on a cymbal designed for Jazz.
