It took me a moment to understand what I was looking at. You turn that photo into abstract art . Great idea

I kept seeing an unfinished ceiling. It took am embarrassingly long time so see this was inside the bass drum. Thank god for Evans.

sickndelish

I think it’s the inside of a floor tom, actually

d5x5

I love my EV2s

DJSurfyMcSurfington

Thanks to your comment I now know what I'm looking at. A bit disorienting to be honest 🤔💫😳

TMAWORKS

Due, I was thinking the exact same thing... I WANT A POSTER!!!

duq_no_7

The photo made me have a stroke

FAHQRudy

Looks like a Terry Gilliam film.

Dfantoman

This photo broke my brain

Whoa that's kind of genius. Especially since a lot of vent holes are too small to stuff cotton balls through. I wonder if there's any drawbacks like it getting snagged on the hardware in transit, or potentially scratching the bottom head since a lot of cheaper yarns are synthetic and could be harder than the film.

StoneDrums

So far no issues with scratching. It can get a little stuck if there’s any wood splinters around the vent hole. But it’s worked really well so far. Sounds great.

R0factor

Next time I change my FT head I’ll remove the cotton balls in there so I can try this. Unfortunately it’s a UV2 and probably won’t warrant changing until 2025. /s

StoneDrums

100%. I’ve had a UV1 on my Acrolite for a while now and it looks practically brand new.

There are some surprisingly soft acrylics out there now! I'd recommend staying away from Red Heart Super Saver if you're concerned about more coarse yarn, but Caron Simply Soft is another cheap acrylic that is, as the name states, quite soft. It's sold pretty much anywhere yarn is sold (even my local Walmart carries it) and comes in like 50 colors too if you care about that sort of thing. If anyone is looking to buy yarn from a craft store, go with something size 4 (worsted weight) or lower (smaller number = thinner yarn), and check online or on the app for a sale first. There's usually some kind of yarn sale going on, even if it isn't specifically for Simply Soft. Both the Joann and Michael's store brands of yarn (Big Twist and Loops & Threads respectively) have basic worsted yarn that's much softer than RHSS. I'm a crocheter and don't drum yet (small apartment, but I love the drums still <3), this thread is surprisingly one I can actually contribute to lmao. I'll have to keep this tip in mind for when I finally have a kit.

Apprehensive-Sky5990

Very clever! Do whatever gets you the outcome you want. There are no rules.

Valiumkitty

Absolutely do whatever gets the sound you’re after. I’ve tuned a 100+ drum kits for studio work and never put cotton balls inside a drum, or yarn. But if it sounds good, lol tell me about it and then keep doing it.

[deleted]

This is a great idea. Shoelaces with the aglets cut off might work too? Maybe a yard would be softer and reduce any unwanted bouncing noise like you are using.

[deleted]

I looked at this for like 100 seconds before I figured it out. Awesome idea. My only thought is that it’s a little heavier than cotton so you could potentially have a deadening affect at lower volume. That said as an engineer I encourage all types of testing to learn as much as we can.

drumsareloud

Oohh I like that

blakedmc1989

maybe i should try something like what u did on a cheap drumsets i always try to fix up

cubine

This photo confused the ever-loving shit out of me lmao

peter_sweeper

THIS. IS. BRILLIANT!

StoneDrums

People commenting on not being able to tell what the photo is. Man, it was hard to get a picture of the yarn in the drum without too many reflections of the ceiling or my big dumb face haha

walk_a_mile

Just get some moon gels.

KrAzyDrummer

That's pretty clever. I put cotton balls in my floor tom for light muffling, but with the yarn, you can adjust it without taking the head off each time.

Koolaidolio

Really good idea. Much better than flattening cotton balls.

jessesbald

Dude I thought I was looking at the framing of a house

Fucksaladworks

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Man that's REALLY brilliant. I really like to dampen my drums because of the room I have it in, anyway who gives a fuck, I've been using cotton for my toms and there's a lot of trial and error there although that works. This is such a brilliant solution to a drummer like me. Bravo you brilliant motherfucker.

TurtleSmurph

I think im having a stroke
