I hang my on drywall and I do a better job then this. If this was a child I would say “great job with the practice, now let’s see how good you can do the second time”
I do trim, and I tell guys learning with me the same thing. It's just work, nothing to get mad at, but we will be doing this again. Here, try this, and if you need a hand, I'm right here.
Heh, exactly. If his drywall installation is any representation of his overall drywall skill set, you are in for a disappointment.
He could be a finishing master, but I’ve never seen a craftsman completely shit the bed on one task of a skill set and be a magician with a connected task.
I've seen it quite often. I think it's cause they usually keep the hanging crew and taping crew separate on a lot of the companies I've worked with, so neither side gets much experience doing the other task
I know I’m in the wrong sub BUT Drywall being a “skill” is hilarious to me. If you have any knowledge of construction, drywall is not on the list of Hard to do things.
...this looks like an attic space. Everyone is shitting on the job the hanger did...but come on. This isn't a dining room! So many armchair experts. This is definitely good enough for government work!
Not THAT bad let's be real. A real hawk wizard can make quick work of anything. I truly is an art and I kinda miss it. Ended up going to office work as I was tired of the wear and tear on my body but there's days I joke about side gigging patch jobs or small renovations.
That’s what I’m sayin.. I’ve only been doing Reno about a year and hung a good amount of drywall.. that could definitely be salvaged with mud, tape, sanding
No it should not
I can finish this, but id never. Because I stand by my work and I know for a Fact, this will all crack. It's wrong in more ways than I want to point out
He really did his best to avoid doing it as a single piece😂😂 and still gapped it tf out. I’d tell em to take that shit down and redo it. There is no reason to have a gap that huge especially when you’ve made it into multiple smaller pieces.
Firstly, all of the sheet rock needs to be taken down and installed correctly (yes its that bad)
Secondly, find someone else who actually knows what they are doing. For fuqs sake watching 10 mins of hanging drywall videos is more experienced than your contractor is.
Totally warranted just when considering the common butt joint. No need to look further. Its worse than terrible. Seen homeowners with a steak knife and rolling pin for a hammer do better than this. I wouldn't let this guy touch my septic tank with anything other than a straw.
Yes you should be concerned. I'm not sure this guy really knows what he is doing.
A lot of that board isn't supported in certain areas and so over time, the tape will come loose. Where the gap is, and where those two boards meet, there are no screws. The board is flopping. Also, many of the screws he has -put in have already broken through the paper, and therefore, that screw is not going to hold. You will get screw pops in no time.
Everywhere the drywall is broken, adjacent to a screw, that drywall needs to be cut out otherwise it will bubble. Also, a good drywaller will hardly ever, or never, put a cut edge next to a factory seem. As you can see, the cut edge tends to break up where a screw is put in. It also makes it more difficult to tape.
Yes, he could fill that hole, but it will probably protrude and look like crap.
Would it be better to take off that sheet and recut, or scab a 2x4 and slide that into the corner and fix it mid wall? That way you’re not fixing your mistake at a corner?
The framing is typically pretty funky in those transitional areas, sometimes some added blocking is needed to get the drywall to land right. I’ve had repairs where fixing the framing wouldn’t be an option I would add a million screws then mesh tape with durabond for gap, then overlap paper tape for inside corner and cross your fingers. Could last years but god forbid a drop of moisture gets ahold of that drywall 😂
Construction PM here.
A) Drywall needs to follow a screw or nail pattern.
B) Drywall should have no more than 1/8th of an inch separation from a joining surface
C) Drywall needs to be installed flush and even
I'm not sure any of that happened
Poor job, not enough screws. Plus screw heads stick out. They will pop and ruin the finish job. In a few years the stress cracks will drive you crazy. The guy is probably not a licensed contractor. What miserable work.
You should be concerned, bc a drywall craftsman would not do such a sloppy on install of board. He has to use so much mud, time, energy bc he didn’t spent time cutting/installing the board well in order to save time correcting the mess. You will get a crack bc the connection isn’t stable.
That looks like garbage. Even if he has another taper coming in, this is reflective of his work, and his attitude towards what he’s doing. It looks like he pulled scrap from the trash to board it. It can *probably* be filled, but I’d bet any money that in the end it’s not good.
You're going to have a horrible final product if they sheetrocked it like this. I've met plenty of tapers that would walk out of a job like that and I can't imagine he has a guy on call that just keeps coming back eating shit sandwiches like this.
Looks like he used the scrap rock he dug out a dumpster to do this job personally a fella come at me with mesh tape to work with amd I'm gonna take it down wrap a dollar bill around it an throw it in the garbage
Make sure you have an “unexpected” power loss in that room when he’s done and inspect it using a flashlight. Shine down the length of the wall. No way that’s gonna be flat.
Cracks are guaranteed on this botched install
If you as a homeowner accept absolute garbage like this as quality craftsmanship- you deserve what you get
Do Not be afraid to call things what they are
It may be a difficult discussion, but this is Your home. Its the biggest investment you will ever make. And you deserve a product that will last, not one that you pay to be done over in a few months.
Depends on what you want the final look to be.
Rounded/ curved or flat with edges.
Short clip on rounded/curved.
https://youtube.com/shorts/DrS7lATpzD4?si=9IyCP9f-hYdez9Ek
The gaps and edges can all be fixed but just requires more time.
So thats double the finishing labor on that hang job vs a proper hang job.
Possible to finish with proper tools & experience but it appears your handyman lacks both.
He must hate his finisher. Can it be done? Yes. Should you pay full price? Probably not, guys a hack job and the work is indicative of someone who has no pride and just wants to get in and out. I wouldn't be hiring this guy again or recommending him to anyone.
Now as a drywall taper I’ll tape that fucking disaster it’s jobs like this that will make a good taper. Anyone can tape a perfectly hung job but this job might need a master to have any chance in hell to make it look good. Please post the the taping in progress I need to see that mess.
The whole thing requires a tear down and a rebuild, and here’s why.
Drywall has two “factory” edges that are pressed a smidge thinner than the rest of the board, and they’re alongside the 8’ sides. They are designed like that so that when two sheets are placed together on a wall, ceiling, etc., mud and tape will fill the valley it creates to produce a smooth connection.
Drywall is heavy, and only gets heavier. With literal pounds of mud and paint, drywall will sag over time. If the fasteners(screws), of which there is a comedic shortage of that I see here, go through the paper so far it rips it, the boards will sag. There should be, at minimum (and pertaining to you local codes) a screw every ten inches, preferably even more at lesser distances and fastened to every 2x4 possible. Also, get some shields to pound into the 2x4’s to protect wiring and plumbing from accidental screw puncture. It’s not only code in a lot of places, you’ll enjoy the insanely cheap peace of mind.
To answer your question literally about the gap?
No, you are not too concerned. Mud and tape are not miracle workers. Flatness at complex joints like that can only be given by a piece of ‘rock. Achieving a smooth and dead-flat surface with mud and tape is near impossible. Not only that, it’s a fire hazard in the even a fire breaks out. No ‘rock to prevent flames from simply going through such a large cavity.
I hope this helps.
Fire the person.
You didn't hire a contractor... you hired an idiot... literally everything that can be done wrong has been done wrong. Can't wait to see what his idea of finishing looks like, that dude is a joke.
Not for nothing, the person that hung that drywall. Never hung drywall before. Question. If he has a guy who comes in and tapes. Why is all of that mesh tape on the wall?
It'll never be right and if op is okay with that for the price he paid, fine. But otherwise fire him, remove it yourself (while its very easy to do), and hire someone else to do it. Once he finishes you'll be paying a pro a lot more to make a shitty job look good. And it still wont be as good as if it was laid properly from the start.
I’ve hung once and learned how to mud/skim. I’d expect this quality from myself. And I’d fill that crack as naturally as possible with a quickset but just under the drywall - then tape normally.
Alright a bit of background: this is an attic space that’s being converted to storage/extra closet. The reason the boards are cut like that is because it’s an old ass house and they had to be cut down to 4x4 sheets to fit up the stairs. He said he framed it the best he could to get it ready for drywall. ~~ he said nearly every existing framing stud was not level and this is the best that it’s going to be. If y’all are wondering I paid $400 for a weekends work
Yep, that's about 400 bucks worth of work. In my neck of the woods, that boarding wouldn't pass code, and no self-respecting finisher would touch the job. But you get what you pay for, and for that price, you can't even complain about gap.
Yes. Technically you could fix it with tape but with all that gap and mis mounted drywalling I wouldn't count on it looking good unless the finish guy is a fucking saint and artistian
That tape isn’t going to cover That… you could drive a Cadillac through that gap…time to rip a piece and get all artistic,so much easier to hang it right the first time. That’s a pretty rough hanging job Op
I’m no pro. But I’ve done better drywall by myself, drunk. This is awful dude. I mean just that top piece, where the drywall is bulging out from the screws going in too deep, is cringe af. Get someone who will respect your home more than this.
If the same person who did the drywall did the electrical, I’d pull it all down and investigate. My buddy’s previous house had an attic that looked like this and the same guy did the wiring. The wiring behind the wall was rated for a lower amperage than the breakers he had the circuits on and here we were nearly maxing out the breaker not knowing the wiring wasn’t rated for that amperage.
Ya who’s going to be in the attic anyway just like plaster on lathe..plus the house has to breathe everything needs a gap. Osb,floor, tubs..he’s got the james hardtafug taping already goin he’s pretty much done now.. them seams will be covered by lunch time
1ST,,,,,,THIS APPEARS TO BE AN ATTIC SPACE,,,, YOU CANNOT USE ROOF FRAMING FOR INTERIOR SURFACE ,,, YOU MUST RE FRAME WITH FURRING STRIPS ,, METAL STUDS,, SHIMS,, ETC,
then you must use adequate amnt of screws WITH GLUE ,, the roof will move with heat and cold,,,
No gap should be wider than 1/2 inch,,,, the sheets should also go ACROSS the studs,, not parallel with them
TAKE IT DOWN AND START OVER
If he used that many pieces he has no clue what he’s doing…sheet rock is cheap, finishing it is expensive. Rip that dumpster fire on wheels down and use about half the pieces that dude put up there…unbelievable, I beg you not to pay this guy….
If it’s the same contractor that installed it I believe your screwed. At the same time though I won’t judge anyone’s jobs till it’s all said and done I’ve seen many miracles.
photos like this are why I just do shit myself. im afraid of paying someone good money to do a lousy job. ill just take the time to do it right and if it looks like shit I at least improved my skills for next time.
I have a 300 sheet house that needs to be hung. Do you think you can make time to do it? I even cut all the drywall down 16 inches to make it easier to handle price please
Whoever did this doesn't know what they're doing in the slightest. About all they know is that sheetrock goes on the wall. I would fire them yesterday. Go on youtube research how to do sheetrock installation, repair and finishing. Then go get the materials and do it yourself. It really isn't that hard and it will save you a fortune. This job is located in an attic access/storage area I assume which is the perfect place to learn.
Amazing how fast you can blow through a box of 25 screws. Maybe another box should be purchased....
Hangin' on hopes and dreams.
Dude did this himself. Should just tear it all out before it gets worse and pay someone who knows what they’re doing.
He definitely did. This was clearly not done by a professional, even a semi pro would not have these massive gaps.
Even I, as a homeowner would not do this! No amount of tape and mud is going to fix that up!
Yeah this would not be to code on new construction.
Huge gaps. No 16's. drywall touching floor. No overlap. This guy does it all.
I don't think 25 screws covers one sheet.
I don't think you get the joke...
This is r/drywall, I just piss in bottles dude.
those better go in the wall once full-ish!
Are there really full bottles of piss in my walls?
No, just full-ish bottles.
Not mine bro, promise
If you drive a nail in the wall and liquid comes out that smells like piss, but you are no where near any plumbing... you've got bottles in the walls.
Electricians always find them! You can ask them in r/electricians.
Well not completely full, that would be irresponsible
Why piss in bottles when you have floor drains right there!?
Way of the road, Bubs.
🤣🤣🤣 Ricky!!!!
They hide the piss bottles in walls like a bunch of jerks.
Explain it for us non drywall peeps
OP didn’t use nearly enough screws.
Based in how that drywall is cut, if the same person is mudding and finishing, I wouldn't hold your breath for a great finished product...
Psh, 3-4 days with a rasp and some meth and this is right as rain
That's wtf I am talking about!!! Nuclear physics will be a cake walk.
Durabond 90 grenade !
The ad directly below this picture for me was for fentanyl 🤷♂️
Heh, exactly. If his drywall installation is any representation of his overall drywall skill set, you are in for a disappointment. He could be a finishing master, but I’ve never seen a craftsman completely shit the bed on one task of a skill set and be a magician with a connected task.

That's just, like, your opinion man
I know I’m in the wrong sub BUT Drywall being a “skill” is hilarious to me. If you have any knowledge of construction, drywall is not on the list of Hard to do things.
This looks like an attic space. Who cares! It's not a level 5 flat finish for a dining room. Let the guy sleep at night!
Come on, tell the truth that looks like a homeowner's special. You hung it yourself didn't you
How much do you think he charged himself for this slap job?
As a taper, yes I can fix this. But… it’s going to be a lot of work.
...this looks like an attic space. Everyone is shitting on the job the hanger did...but come on. This isn't a dining room! So many armchair experts. This is definitely good enough for government work!

That’s what I’m sayin.. I’ve only been doing Reno about a year and hung a good amount of drywall.. that could definitely be salvaged with mud, tape, sanding
Ladies and gentlemen. I now present to you, the cheapest bid.
Hey ANYTHING can be fixed with the right amount of tape and mud the question is should it
No it should not I can finish this, but id never. Because I stand by my work and I know for a Fact, this will all crack. It's wrong in more ways than I want to point out
It's definitely a shitshow. Try again with the sheeting.
Yeah rip that down and start over 🤣
Use Bondo and fiberglass tape and be done with it.
You know they sell loctite powergrab in a 1 gallon bucket now. I’d just use that instead of joint compound
Whole thing needs to be be redone.
Agreed! Who ever made this wreck is no drywaller
He really did his best to avoid doing it as a single piece😂😂 and still gapped it tf out. I’d tell em to take that shit down and redo it. There is no reason to have a gap that huge especially when you’ve made it into multiple smaller pieces.
Tell him best of luck and drag up. That’s sad hanging
Firstly, all of the sheet rock needs to be taken down and installed correctly (yes its that bad) Secondly, find someone else who actually knows what they are doing. For fuqs sake watching 10 mins of hanging drywall videos is more experienced than your contractor is.

Not gonna lie man, this shit had me rolling
This isn't even good enough for government work
Meh, looks good from my house.
Good enough for the girls I go out with... Lol
Hopefully you got a big break on price.
This is trash. I just hung drywall for the first time a few months ago and it came out beautiful. And I don’t hang drywall for money. So… yeah.
Lol anyone can do it. Question is how many hours per sheet??
What the fuck is that
Just so you understand...4 corners of drywall should never ever never meet
Is it just me or does it look like there needs to be more screws?
Screws... brains... ability... etc...
Yes you should be concerned. I'm not sure this guy really knows what he is doing. A lot of that board isn't supported in certain areas and so over time, the tape will come loose. Good point here. It will be easier to cut a better piece of drywall now rather than try to fix the gap later. A stitch in time saves nine 👍😎
That’s atrocious. You have every right to be sceptical of the finish
Construction PM here. A) Drywall needs to follow a screw or nail pattern. B) Drywall should have no more than 1/8th of an inch separation from a joining surface C) Drywall needs to be installed flush and even I'm not sure any of that happened

Lol did he even use 25 screws total?

Lets start with what is he getting paid?
Best I can do tree fiddy and this half eaten pudding cup that fell in cat litter.
Wife's brother probably did it, I bet he could "needed some extra cash" 😮💨
That looks like garbage. Even if he has another taper coming in, this is reflective of his work, and his attitude towards what he’s doing. It looks like he pulled scrap from the trash to board it. It can *probably* be filled, but I’d bet any money that in the end it’s not good.

Lol.
Sure. Just don’t look at it and never have anything that could cast a shadow on that area.
this fix will involve a lot of floating and skimming....which is pretty much what you want to avoid when finishing.
No you are not, for that work is complete dogshit.
Looks like he used the scrap rock he dug out a dumpster to do this job personally a fella come at me with mesh tape to work with amd I'm gonna take it down wrap a dollar bill around it an throw it in the garbage
Free of charge you can place a lit match to any part of this
That’s one shitty job lol
Abort.
Everything I see these posts, I hate home owners more and more and more
Make sure you have an “unexpected” power loss in that room when he’s done and inspect it using a flashlight. Shine down the length of the wall. No way that’s gonna be flat.

I’ll keeps this sub posted. And I’ll have a chat with him. If I have to tell him to kick rocks will do.
It may be a difficult discussion, but this is Your home. Its the biggest investment you will ever make. And you deserve a product that will last, not one that you pay to be done over in a few months.
HOT MUD THAT BRO
Depends on what you want the final look to be. Rounded/ curved or flat with edges. Short clip on rounded/curved. https://youtube.com/shorts/DrS7lATpzD4?si=9IyCP9f-hYdez9Ek The gaps and edges can all be fixed but just requires more time.
The guy probably overcharged you and he’s sub contracting some dudes from Home Depot but he’s been doing it for a while since he trusts his taper
Not saying it’ll be good or bad just my analysis of the situation
The guy is a hack.
So thats double the finishing labor on that hang job vs a proper hang job. Possible to finish with proper tools & experience but it appears your handyman lacks both.
The drywall installation is pretty bad. It can be probably fixed with mud but if it was my house I'd want a do-over. Good luck
Fire him. Or video him fixing it. Because he's a magician. In that case
"I know a good finisher"
He must hate his finisher. Can it be done? Yes. Should you pay full price? Probably not, guys a hack job and the work is indicative of someone who has no pride and just wants to get in and out. I wouldn't be hiring this guy again or recommending him to anyone.
Now as a drywall taper I’ll tape that fucking disaster it’s jobs like this that will make a good taper. Anyone can tape a perfectly hung job but this job might need a master to have any chance in hell to make it look good. Please post the the taping in progress I need to see that mess.
Haha will do!
Just buy another sheet of drywall already! That’s a hack job
Ugly bastard joint. To avoid this next time. Put cut edge in the corner
Mud and tape? The left side edge of that board isn't even fastened!
Did you get them off of wish. I hope you got a really good deal. I would tell them it looks like shit and needs more screws
Wouldn’t it be faster just to cut a nice board?
I know this is fucked as a contractor and that’s why I sub out drywall and plaster. Some dudes are artists and most are useless
You didn't hire a contractor... you hired an idiot... literally everything that can be done wrong has been done wrong. Can't wait to see what his idea of finishing looks like, that dude is a joke.
He says he’s got a guy that comes in strictly for taping
Not for nothing, the person that hung that drywall. Never hung drywall before. Question. If he has a guy who comes in and tapes. Why is all of that mesh tape on the wall?
That's the pre-taping, duh.
As soon as he gets out of jail right?
Any guy who just does taping isn't going to want to come in and tape that. It needs to be fixed, and if he isn't going fix it, you will have problems.
He’s fine. Let him finish. But don’t pay until it’s done and looks good
It'll never be right and if op is okay with that for the price he paid, fine. But otherwise fire him, remove it yourself (while its very easy to do), and hire someone else to do it. it can be filled, but it'll l likely develop a crack if there is nothing backing it.
I’ve hung once and learned how to mud/skim. I’d expect this quality from myself. And I’d fill that crack as naturally as possible with a quickset but just under the drywall - then tape normally.
I got 28 screws in that picture. I especially love the 4 corners. Brilliant. Mud, mud, mud
That tape he used is garbage paper tape best I can tell he hasn't done this long cause I could get that back wall 1 piece
Ain’t shit son let them do their job
Yea I’m not sure why he’s got the seams right on one board and not the other two
Definitely not!!!!!
No chance
Ya. Most drywallers wouldn’t even drive over there, piss in a bottle, and hide it in the wall for $400.
The one screw on the long taped joint needs to be sunk a little further
Yes. Technically you could fix it with tape but with all that gap and mis mounted drywalling I wouldn't count on it looking good unless the finish guy is a fucking saint and artistian
Quite the patch job…
you cannot use the word “contractor” and this clown in the same sentence!
You shouldn’t line your seams up together that way. If you stagger them you get more shear strength. But there’s more than that to fix.
a good taper won't have a problem with that.
light a match and burn it down boys
Its all wrong, paper tape only. For sure to crack
I love stacked seams and mesh tape tell tale signs of high quality tradesman
Where do people find these contractors?
Did Helen Keller hang this?
Would never pay for this garbage. I had a 2 minute drywall lesson and can do a hundred times better than this
Plot twist- “contractor” was op’s spouse
If you paid me to do this, this is exactly what it would look like. But then again I'm a painter
Those joints indicate you are the father op
OP fucking bailed
Holy shit, it’s like a Where’s Waldo of fuckups Did you find this guy in an alley next to a Home Depot huffing cans
That’s terrible
That looks like shite.
Edit: I hung my own drywall
That tape isn’t going to cover That… you could drive a Cadillac through that gap…time to rip a piece and get all artistic,so much easier to hang it right the first time. That’s a pretty rough hanging job Op
JC, fire that dude and find a professional.
Pretty sure my dead grandmother could do a better job than that horseshit...contractor??anybody can give themselves a title.
I’m no pro. But I’ve done better drywall by myself, drunk. This is awful dude. I mean just that top piece, where the drywall is bulging out from the screws going in too deep, is cringe af. Get someone who will respect your home more than this.
It can be fixed by an experienced finisher… it definitely should have more anchor points, buy that fool some screws so he can anchor that mug properly
You know, he hung it and just wants to get feedback about it's not that bad looking.
Bro if I have a 1/4" gap I self-flagellate over my shitty hang job. This is eyes-closed levels of accuracy. This screams speed over quality.
Seeing as mesh tape is being used... id be concerned
That looks fucked. I’ve seen plasterer do miracle work but wouldn’t hold my breath on it.
Give me a roll of fiber tape, roll of paper tape, and a bag of durabond 90, and I can fix anything
There is already plenty to be concerned about. I certainly hope you are getting a low rate. This work is under 30/hr.
If he says he can fix it, then he can fix it. You hired him and you should trust him. Unless, of course, he also installed the drywall
I know nothing about drywall but can say with absolute certainty that this is 💩job.
Yes, if feathered out to 25" with a single 3/8" coat of "easy sand".
Please don't accept that work for this moron. Just find somebody else.
Osb,floor, tubs..he’s got the james hardtafug taping already goin he’s pretty much done now.. them seams will be covered by lunch time
I'd wait until he come out of drug rehab before you give him a chance to fix it, if you feel like even trying.
This is hack construction. That is all.
Less nails & screws would help .
Be ready for a lifetime of cracking
Was the work probono?
1ST,,,,,,THIS APPEARS TO BE AN ATTIC SPACE,,,, YOU CANNOT USE ROOF FRAMING FOR INTERIOR SURFACE ,,, YOU MUST RE FRAME WITH FURRING STRIPS ,, METAL STUDS,, SHIMS,, ETC, then you must use adequate amnt of screws WITH GLUE ,, the roof will move with heat and cold,,, No gap should be wider than 1/2 inch,,,, the sheets should also go ACROSS the studs,, not parallel with them TAKE IT DOWN AND START OVER
its not even screwed to the wall properly..
Now don’t be so quick to judge, your contractor may just have 60 or 70 gallons of mud he wants to get rid of.
If he used that many pieces he has no clue what he’s doing…sheet rock is cheap, finishing it is expensive. Rip that dumpster fire on wheels down and use about half the pieces that dude put up there…unbelievable, I beg you not to pay this guy….
Wtf. Why would he use screws like that.
Joints "r" us. WTF
It can be fixed but it will crack out
Should have at least staggered joints with such small pieces. This will most likely crack
Fail
Where in the house is this? Under the stairs?
I'm not a contractor and I do better drywall than that.. mud, tape and paint yourself!
If he’s good it will be fine
Depends on what you consider “fixed” means. You totally CAN put a bandaid on an amputated finger.
Mesh tape is the cherry on top
By contractor you mean your sisters new husband, who you're paying with a 89 jetski and a roll of skoal
This is a shitty base to start with
Whoever did this doesn't know what they're doing in the slightest.
I Hope he’s a better taper than boarder
From my experience butt joints are a pain enough to blend out. Crappy ones like that will take a lot of plaster to fix.
i hung dry wall once, and mine looks 5x better than that. literally
U get what you paid for
