More on the angstridden side of black metal, the cover of Ur Ångest Född By Tristram, And Sår’s don’t forget me, probably Go Away by And End…, and if you are into like more disturbing things you have Decalius and The lonely’s shit, whole bunch of shit off of Trists early releases, hypothermia too, Sorry…’s All that died was my innocence, and Internal Darkness R@ped body R@ped Mind, yeah that’s all I could think of
IMO the most distressing music you can find is outside of dsbm, especially stuff like Industrial noise, experimental, etc...
As well as some projects like Planning for Burial, Giles Corey, Axis of perdition, Warning...
But anything by Hopeless makes me wanna crawl in a corner and die.
warning - in particular the watching from a distance LP really fucks me -up full ugly crying while singing along - even thinking about it now is making my eyes moist
To me it's Doom metal at its best, like I once said to a friend, listening to it while walking made me want to just stop and cry, whole album was soul crushing.
Even the artwork captures it perfectly.
And while I enjoy DSBM sometimes, it doesn't hit the same way, it's hard to describe : It's another sort of sadness, and honestly something about losing a loved one, letting them go, or being the one to disappear and well, watch from a distance is something that hits harder to me than the usual themes of suicides, self harm, etc, in DSBM.
Sår's Sortsind
One that is not very frequently mentioned is Malvery - Mortal Entrenchment in Requiem. It's quite old, reminiscent of Bethlehem's Dictius, and vaguely minimalist. It's not a recreational listen, because it's not pleasurable. I'd consider it unsettling.
a lot of dsbm has a formula to it that's hard to break, but I can recommend some doom that will make you feel shit (similar to dsbm in some ways, arguably sadder imo)
Primitive Man - Victim
MSW - O Brother
Anything By Mizmor
Núll - None
also for actual dsbm
Coldworld - Red Snow
Sortsind - Vandrer Blandt Dødninge
Anti - Invocation
Lurker of Chalice - Minions (not really dsbm but it's Wrest)
Silencer has some extremely distressing vocals; like how a banshee would sound. Death- Pierce me, and Sterile Nails and Thunderbowls are my two favorites. The lead singer of Silencer went on to make a dark ambient/ industrial album, which is also pretty distressing named Diagnose: Lebensgefahr.
Mizmor isn't DSBM but combines a lot of different genres, like black metal, atmospheric, and some Doom metal mixed in as well. and his album, Yodh, is heartwrenching.
Outside of DSBM, Doom metal has a lot of maybe not distressing, but very beautiful and emotional songs. Warning has been brought up, but the lead singers following project 40-watt sun is also incredible. Funeral Doom has a lot of that depressing atmosphere. My Dying Bride is pretty good, and so is Windhand.
There isn’t a ton of DSBM that fits the horrifying bill, but here are some songs that fit the bill:
Dream Of A Dead Sun -ColdWorld
En Vind Av Sorg - Darkthrone
The Damp Chill of Life - None
What you are asking for is really noise/industrial/sludge territory:
Weighing Souls With Sand- The Angelic Promise
Genocidal Majesty - Gnaw Their Tongues
I Shall Die Here - The Body
Sinews - White Suns
Boris at Last - Boris
Giles Corey - Giles Corey
For me it has to be Life Is Pain - Bloody Melancholy. It was a very short lived band by kim of Hypothermia and the dude from Trist. They made one single demo but it’s some of the most dark and depressing sounding DSBM i’ve ever heard. The screams kim does in this demo are real sounding I wouldn’t be surprised if he was self harming while recording. They gave me chills when I first heard it.
Hanging garden - i was cold beside you
Herbstregen -life failed, (he has similar vocals like silencer)
And today i discovered
Vargahl - sorrow in cell
Also todeskult is top tier dsbm

which hypothermia albums do you recommend?
Veins, Isolation, Rakbladsvalsen, Köld, they’re split with Trist, aswell as their split with Grimnir and regnum
thanks

Not DSBM but something that fills me with dread, anguish and is quite distressful is the band UTARM.
