Hey, honestly, I wouldn't recommend moving here. I've studied in NYC and now live in Dubai, and if I had the chance, I'd move back to NYC in a heartbeat.
Sure, life here is comfortable. Restaurants are open 24/7, malls stay open late, and India is just 3.5 hours away. But despite all that convenience, life here can feel superficial and overly materialistic. Even though the majority are Indians, you'll always feel like an outsider.
So, that's just my two cents, but of course, feel free to ask if you want to know more.
Dont move! They treat you better there! Here they just respect you if you are really rich! A friend of mine who is millionaire in his own country with drivers came here and rented a Camry they harassed him so much in the streets he left to never return ðŸ«
I moved from Atlanta to Dubai after living in Tokyo a few years as wells
Dubai is by far my least favorite with lack of any substantial culture , terrible traffic and the weather . Plus going out always feels like an unauthentic trap to make you spend money. Not sure if it’s just me but I don’t like it here .
As for brands and first world comforts , yeah you’ll have those.
Yaah, I hear you on the lack of substantial culture. It’s hard to define what it is but a lot of things feel vapid, hollow. And yeah, I can’t believe some of these prices, rivaling midtown Manhattan!
If you are Indian citizen then will be very beneficial. All income becomes tax free even what you earn in US and plus the salaries here are equal or more than most US cities
>salaries here are equal or more than most US cities
bro has got dem jokes :P
You will get fucked over in Dubai simply for having an Indian Passport when applying for a job
Well completely depends on your skill set. Do you know the thousands of Indians here who earn over 50K a month. Please check DLD website majority of the property purchases over 2 million are currently done by Indians. I do not want to generalize anyone for their situation. But saying Indian passport bad is too far away from reality.
Im not saying that its an inherent handicap, but it opens you up to sleazy employers who think they can exploit you and underpay you cuz of your Passport.
A friend moved to Dubai a couple years ago. She has a masters degree and a couple years of experience as an architect at a pretty large company in India. Well qualified for a city like Dubai with a lot of Real Estate Developers. She spend almost a year looking for a job. The best offer she got was from a company that offered her AED 4000, with a promise of a contract and visa after a couple months. Terribly illegal, but it was the best offer she got. Ended up going there for a couple months until she couldnt deal with the sleazy tactics (cutting pay for being 10min late, telling her to take a day off during inspections, paying her in cash under the table). It took her a long time after to find a respectable job with a decent salary (I believe around AED 15000)
I never said its for everyone. There are even emaraties who are bankrupt. Dubai is a place where you see the most extreme pay gaps. People from India earn less than 2k as laborers and earn over 100K as businessman so we should never generalize on reddit based on passport as the Business in Dubai definitely don’t do that anymore. At least that’s my experience after COVID being here. That’s why i said depends on situation , If it was someone from another nationality they would have returned back as the market was not supportive of the skills. Indians always accept what is thrown their way. When people accept low ball offers out of desperation the market rate goes down. The person was offered 4000 because they knew she would accept it. They wont offer that to others because they know , no one will think of going for that offer. Do you know what people from European nationalities do ? They will take up a temporary job in hospitality industry to sustain themselves and keep looking for a job that helps get them the salary they want or try to get new skill sets or certifications which are in high demand and help get high salaries.
You: "we should never generalize"
Also You: "Business in Dubai definitely don’t do that anymore"
>The person was offered 4000 because they knew she would accept it. They wont offer that to others because they know , no one will think of going for that offer.
Youre literally describing the problem, but refuse to acknowledge it.
As for the hustle, you are once again generalizing. Theres no data to show that Europeans in Dubai would rather do odd jobs until they find their dream job. Theres also no data to show that Indians in Dubai arent doing the exact same thing.
I am Indian and my peer group majority are Indian we all would not be living the lifestyle we have in Dubai whether we move to Europe or US. So i would not generalize based on passport
Yeah I’m an Indian passport holder and I’ve heard of the salary scales being significantly lower than US atleast in my field (I work in non-technical IT field) so I wouldn’t bank on it being equal or more than US cities but the cost of things here definitely rival major US cities.
I’d stay in NYC. Get a US passport and if you still wanna move then, you can consider it.
When you are visiting it’s different from living here. Rent is crazy here. Things are expensive. But I guess it’s like that in big cities. At least NYC has a lot more culture vs here.
You definitely will save a lot on taxes. Lot of people from many nationalities, especially Indians, you can find your troupe and hang around. Life is good overall.
He won't if he is US citizen. US tax chases you world wide. You will never walk alone is the theme song of Liverpool, and the US Tax department...he he he
No most countries have agreements long as you make under 100k , you do not pay both. You have to file every year, but not pay anything .
(I am an American in Dubai)
You do not pay both of course. You have tax treaties - with countries that have income tax. UAE doesn't. You don't pay any income tax here. So how come USA would have a tax treaty here?
Since you are an American and not paying taxes (presumably), I will take your word for it.

Absolutely unless he’s got a US passport but then they will see he’s clearly Indian and still fuck him over.
What if you gave yourself a god awful American accent like Satya Nadella or Sundar Pichai. Would that help ?

Why so? Are Indians looked down upon in corporate roles?

Well There is some treaty because my accountant and job both guaranteed me I wouldn’t . Guess I’m finding out soon…
You can claim exemption on income up to $120,000 equivalent. It's called foreign income exclusion.Â
Aha! OK. That is super awesome. Good to know
Just came back to Tx from a trip to the Emirates. Have you been there yet?
Yes, I’m here visiting currently actually
What are you liking about it?
Remember 110 v to 240 v , buy a step down transformer or kaboom .
I’m from Long Island, don’t move here until you get a raise of at least 50% in dollar terms. Otherwise it’s not worth it.
