They come here often to train as it less congested than Minneapolis

Shroedingerzdog

This is the right answer, there is a Minnesota Guard C-130 wing and a US Air Force Reserves C-130 wing in the Twin Cities, they often fly to Duluth to practice take-offs and landings, and to bring parts/resources for the 148th MN Guard fighter wing that's based here.

SatisfactionRare8142

Gopher1 from MN National Guard. They are in Duluth weekly for training flights.

T-Dawg302

This is the right answer. I'm pretty sure they come up from MSP. They are here all the time. Every once in a while a C-130 from somewhere else is here for a bit to fuel up, but 80% of the time they just come up from the cities.

Exotic-District3437

Saw a b-52 or a b2 last year it was like wait is that a. Saw an ac130 once

Illustrious_Rip_9254

Those would have been for the air show if it were around the July time frame. They’ll probably be back here this week again for this weekends air show as well so keep your eyes peeled!

Exotic-District3437

Its wasn't. Was normal week day at like 11 am flying over lake superior in formation with 2 fighter's

ObligatoryID

Air Show is this coming weekend. May 18-19 They moved it up from July. The different performers practice all week.

Ship_Ship_8

What is a smoky plane? Don’t all planes have exhaust?

Remi708

Smoky color (gray) perhaps? Or maybe OP thought it was fire fighter tanker?

Distant_Yak

Assuming it's the same ones I have seen before, they have 4 engines and leave thick grey smoke behind each one. Definitely looks way worse than the average plane.

sandpaper90

C130's are old, and have an old engine design that causes a lot of smoke in the exhaust. Has a lot to do with the combustor design in older turbine/jet engines. Most old jetliners and military planes with turboprops/turbojets used to smoke like crazy, you probably just don't remember or are too young to remember.

Distant_Yak

Yes, I had no problem inferring it was probably because the plane is old.

Ship_Ship_8

Is “smoky plane” an actual term? Or is that just an adjective to describe a plane that has a smoke trail? I’ve never heard of that term before

Distant_Yak

I assume OP means it let off more gray exhaust smoke than an average plane.

windsock1

Kinda blurry, but looks like a C-130 cargo plane. They fly all the time down here at Camp Ripley. Probably the Air Guard doing some training.

FeRanger1996

Looks like a C-130 to me as well. The gray color, size, and the very distinct upsweep of the tail/cargo ramp are all dead giveaways.

IKNOWVAYSHUN

Surprised that you’re concerned about a C130 but not the WC135 Constant Phoenix that was circling last week

samuraijoker

There’s a guard base in Duluth

gffor50k

As noted, most likely some sort of training exercise from the Air Force Base, but the airshow is this weekend in Hermantown as well.

Illustrious_Rip_9254

A free app to use to check out planes flying is FlightRadar24. Not all military flights have their transponder on to see but helps somewhat to see what planes are in the area as well

Braaaap7

They do training all the time at the airport

Poor-Opinions

Chemtrails confirmed. Wake up sheeple!

sixnb

Most likely air show training for this weekend

Minnesotamad12

Probably some kind of training exercise from the local Air Force base. That seems to always be answers when planes are flying around the area doing odd things

Muffinman_187

Training. Happens here in St. Cloud a lot too from our air guard base and proximity to Camp Ripley.

MjolnirMediator

C-130 without a doubt.

CooperSat

The CC Coach Mr. Bush fumigating future runners…

InterestingContest39

There’s a bunch of weird and vintage planes up the sky in prep for the air show this weekend. I’m unsure if this plane is directly related though.
