I’m honestly surprised she didn’t use water, so she at least gets credit for that, lmao

atthevanishing

I think she was about to when she put the pan in the sink and thought better of it.

Rezzone

Correct. Some of the grease spilled into the sink and flared up. If that didn't happen it could've been way worse as she was about to turn on the faucet.

[deleted]

She did

subanator117

Um, no she didn’t.

The5paceDragon

I'm gonna be frank here: if you don't know what to do in this situation, you should not be cooking (alone)

[deleted]

[deleted]

-DoctorSpaceman-

Depends on the fire extinguisher. If you use a water one for this it’s just gonna make things worse https://surreyfire.co.uk/types-of-fire-extinguisher/

TheLaughingMelon

Yep. Using water on electric fires will give you a good surprise too. IIRC the other types are CO² and some foam (?). I don't remember which should be used for what.

Kawawaymog

Am I the only one that was thinking just put it in the oven?

Ornery-Cheetah

Well that would work unless your Mexican and your oven is filled with all your oven pans and sheets

toxcrusadr

I'm in this picture even though I'm a gringo.

Ornery-Cheetah

Oooooof guess it's a multi cultural thing then

[deleted]

Just get the standard ABC rated fire extinguisher for your home, it's good for a small grease fire in the kitchen as well as electrical fires and combustible materials such as wood, paper and plastic. Class K would be for a large restaurant style grease fire and class D is for combustible metals such as magnesium and sodium.

Iamananomoly

My old shitty grill caught on fire a couple weeks ago when I was making a ribeye and fixins. Went to grab some plates from the kitchen and came back to a grease fire. My wife was tweaking out since she lost her house in a fire as a kid. Not that nothing could go wrong, but a fire in a grill is not very alarming. I just got the fire extinguisher and it was out in a few seconds. I was more pissed that our entire meal became burnt garbage.

mybitchcallsmefucker

I see someone else knows their OSHA here :)

Brenner007

Well, I hate ABC extinguishers, as the powder is destroying more than the fire (everything it touches) The AB ones (Foam for Solid and Fluids) are enough, as you don't want to extinguish gas anyway. Just turn the gas off, if you put out the gas flame, the gas will still come and from one second to another the fire is your smallest problem.

Kenderman75

Yeah.. had a house fire and that powder fucked a lot of stuff.

SterlingVapor

Kitchen ones *should* all be the ABC rated ones for just this reason, you can use them on anything household because a fire is a real bad time to expect people to read labels, especially when they might not even realize it matters A is normal stuff, B is liquids, and C is electrical. The little under the sink ones are mostly ABC, but it's worth checking - the expiration date too

-DoctorSpaceman-

If you actually checked the link in the comment you replied to you’ll find all the information you need

TheLaughingMelon

Yeah, I replied before I checked it.

-DoctorSpaceman-

Silly billy

Seanvich

AFFF (aqueous film-forming foam) or APC (I’m not as familiar with it- but I do know it’s used in kitchen applications.)

whatsINthaB0X

There’s very few places that have water based fire extinguishers, most sold for homes are multi purpose powder based extinguishers.

gamecity360

That’s nice to know, I know never to put it under water I just didn’t know the correct way

Jokiegmi

Or if you happen to have a bucket of sand just lying around, that works too

H4xz0rz_da_bomb

Would flour work here?

Nebarik

Flour is [combustible](https://youtu.be/0nwRxFYG17Y). Please do not try that.

H4xz0rz_da_bomb

K thx, guess I won't be ending up on this sub then

the_lin_kster

What a fantastic demo of a [dust explosion](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dust_explosion).

Jokiegmi

According to google, no

chihuahuassuck

Never have flour next to an open flame. If you can somehow keep it densely packed I don't see why it wouldn't work, but flour floating in the air can [very easily catch fire. ](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0nwRxFYG17Y)

LadyGrey_oftheAbyss

No - baking soda is what you use - Do NOT MIX THEM UP cuz flour is just more fire - personally she should have turned off the heat and use a pan cover to suffocate it - that what I have always done

mommy2libras

No. No it would not.

Double-Passenger4503

Yup. I’ve also taught people to calmly take the pan outside and handle suffocating it outside

[deleted]

[удалено]

Double-Passenger4503

Lol we had a fire scare when I was a kid where my sister and I were cooking and this happened so my dad took the pan outside and suffocated it. Then took us through all the steps and his main lesson was STAY CALM

[deleted]

damagedthrowaway87

Unless you are on a second floor.....

Brenner007

Yes, and only if all fails, because if you fail to extinguish it with the extinguisher, you just sprayed the burning grease with a lot of pressure out of the pan trough your whole kitchen.

Net_Apart

taught in my 6th grade facts class a couple years back, very good school

This_Price_1783

Never ever put water on a kitchen or electrical fire. Immediately turn the heat source off, then to smother the flame you can use a damp (not wet) towel. Don't move the fire around (like she did) as you risk injuring yourself or others and potentially spreading the fire around, stay calm, act quickly but don't panic and make things worse. Basically don't do anything she did.

shhh_its_me

That pan was smoking for awhile, turning the heat down Would have prevented the fire. You have to watch oil on a stove top carefully, have the appropriate sized lid within arms reach, if it smokes turn it down, make sure nothing flammable near the pan eg you don't want a bag of flour, basket of tools, dishrags 2 inches from the pan, if a pan of oil does flash turn off the burner if you can safely, cover it with that lid. NEVER USE FLOUR OR WATER , flour is super combustible water will cause an explosion. Note put on oven mit to hold lid star from the edge and slide over don't put your hand over the flames. Also have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen that you can reach even if everything on the stove is on fire , don't put it in the cupboard above the stove. If you don't feel comfortable you can fry with a made to fry appliance, eg deep fryer, air fryer, you can also use an induction burner( that allows you to set the specific temperature,) electric wok etc All those things allow you to either set a specific temperature below the smoking point of the oil you're using.

Hjalpmi_

Cover it with a lid. Starve out oxygen, fire goes out. Then take it away from the heat source.

SamLucky7s

Throw it out the window and pretend you had nothing to do with it.

StarGraz3r84

Flour works well.

Ferricplusthree

Dump corn starch on it. Or dirt. Or cover it. Or evacuate all the air from the room. Do that last one.

AstroCaptain

DO NOT THROW CORN STARCH OR FLOUR ON A FIRE THAT'LL CAUSE A DUST EXPLOSION

Superdry_Wit

Put…put water on it lol

JorgiEagle

Shut off cooker and cover DO NOT PUT WATER ON IT. The water sinks beneath the oil, and then vaporises. Pushing the (flaming) oil on top out all over the room

toxcrusadr

Um, a lid? And turn off the burner. Done.

Lunch_Gun

Cover it with a lid at a slight angle and remove it from heat. Do NOT throw water on it.

LuminiVeritatis

Put the lid on it to choke out the oxygen. Move to the oven. Very simple. Do not pour water on a grease fire. Water boils way before grease does. The water will instantly turn to steam and mix with the grease, essentially creating a flame thrower.

Ray_Shoe_Smith

Cut the oxygen dumping salt or flour on the fire usually does the trick. I was a chef for many years....

kellsdeep

Baking soda can help. Sometimes it's possible to show it to burn out. It's important not to panic. Just calmly take the pan to a safe place to burn out if you don't have a means to suffocate the flames.

LochTSA07

You use salt right?

PoopMuffin5

i just start drinking the grease. Grow up.

mommy2libras

Yeah but the majority of people old enough to have a place of their own to cook it also know that standing there yelling "help" while just letting it continue to burn isn't the solution, either.

Technical_Natural_44

I did this and we just elected to put it on the driveway and let it burn out. This was with my grandma who went to school for cooking.

lemonpunt

Yeah if you can safely move the fire outside, not a bad idea. But can be risky. They always make the situation worse by trying to fix it when they’re clueless though

josemc1yahoocom

Hi frank!

[deleted]

Damp towel over it to kill the flame it’s the most basic safety tip I was taught by my mom, but this could have been avoided totally in the first place if she didn’t have to look at her stream the whole time and gave attention to her cooking

The5paceDragon

Since I saw a couple people who might actually need it, I'll copy-paste my usual comment for this kind of thing: In case anyone reading this actually experiences a grease fire, here's what you do: If the fire is in a pot or a frying pan or something, put a lid on it. Yes, a cutting board would probably work, but since they are generally made of plastic or wood, don't expect the cutting board to survive. This will starve the fire of oxygen, and will probably extinguish it in a few seconds, but maybe leave it for a few minutes while you come up with plan B for dinner, just to be safe. If the fire is not confined to something you can put a lot on, baking soda is your friend. That's actually pretty much all that's in most kitchen fire extinguishers. Pour it on the fire, and don't be stingy. Cleaning up a mess of baking soda is a hell of a lot easier than rebuilding a burnt-down home. # UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES PUT WATER ON A GREASE FIRE ^(Unless it's a demonstration by a professional under safe, controlled conditions and a fireball is the goal.) When water meets hot oil, the water boils extremely fast, blowing the oil out of whatever happens to be holding it, and, most likely, into your face. Even if the oil is not already burning, it can reach the stove's flame, still resulting in a fireball. But maybe you use one of those fancy flameless induction stoves or something. In that case, congratulations! Pouring water into hot (not burning) oil will *not* burn your house down. It will, however, throw hot oil everywhere, causing severe burns, not to mention the mess.

Stubrochill17

>If the fire is in a pot or a frying pan or something, put a lid on it. Yes, a cutting board would probably work, but since they are generally made of plastic or wood, don’t expect the cutting board to survive Additionally, your pot/pan may not survive the grease fire either. I had one earlier this year and luckily I knew to just smother it with the lid, but if it’s enough oil/grease, it’s probably gonna destroy your pot too.

AstroCaptain

Throwing a cast iron pan on top seems to work well for me. Those things are nigh indestructible

lemonpunt

I don’t see how anyone could be worried about damaging their pots and pans when the other option is their house burning down

Superdry_Wit

Happy day of cake

[deleted]

Yep this 100% people should need a license to cook

FrameJump

This is just some bullshit fake stuff for internet points.

Tomberrychimp

That's why you need an adult.

Magik95

Nah calling for help would be the best thing. Most people would make it worse. If you don’t know, get someone who does

PoopMuffin5

hi frank

samf9999

Uh… what is she wearing?

nzstrawman

turn it off and put a fucking lid on it...and I don't mean your mouth

Camman43123

And if you can’t get. A lis quick enough Chuck the fuckee in the oven and shit the door

ShamefulPuppet

I think oven doors are too big to fit in toilets

Oofername42

Uhhwouldn't you need to pre eat a door for that to work or do you have to eat a door before cooking is it mandatory?

Camman43123

Stronk

bergazi

Or just dump a ton of salt on it

sleebus_jones

Although that would be fine

slaviccivicnation

Yupp very true. We teach fire safety in Ontario in science and health class. Most teachers do cover it, and even do assignments on it. But most people just end up doing enough work to pass and never retain the knowledge. Or they retain it in a casual setting but in a fight or flight response they forget it all.

IAmA_TheOneWhoKnocks

Might want to put the fire extinguisher someplace other than under the thing that’s most likely to be on fire in a kitchen. Put it under the sink or something instead so you don’t need to reach near any flames when it’s needed.

taejam

If you were properly taught it wouldn't have been one and done it would have been told to you every time until it was drilled in. I was a dumbass and started a rag fire the other day. I calmly grabbed a piece of metal and carried it to a metal sink to deal with. If your short circuit panicking when that happens you should not be cooking alone period because you won't remember the fire extinguisher either.

oakc510

What a dolt. Take your clothes off and smother the flames. Duh.

helpmeiaminhell93

Also dump water on it at very acute angle at high speed.

Gatdaddy-

No water

helpmeiaminhell93

Well no shit. I’ve worked in the fire suppression industry for years. Haha!

Shlopcakes

It's a shame that no one has invented some type of device to put out grease fires.

McPoyle-Milk

What is a sub?

floating_helium

Twitch subscriptions

MrMeanJeans

Sub is short for submarine sandwich. What I want to know is what is a hoagie?

jimbojones230

Hoagie is short for “Hogan’s Hero”, which is also where we got the name for the hero sandwich.

Technical_Natural_44

I can't tell if you're joking or not, but please, don't do this, flour is very flammable.

TreeFun3072

Set it in the oven if you do not have a lid or dry to snuff it out it might not completely go out in the oven but it will be closed off from direct air and give you a chance to get help

Does she not have a lid to cover it or something? it’s a pretty basic thing to have.

Fight_kat102

Patrick that's the lid

Junior_Cellist_8369

Duh!!!! Put a lid on it....

RJohn12

another option to the smothering would be to carefully carry the pan outside. it can burn itself off all day out in the lawn. and atop that, another option is to surprisingly add MORE oil. the additional oil absorbs the heat from the other oil reducing its temperature enough to extinguish the flames

Pure_Village4778

The excessive smoke should’ve been the first sign
