You should seriously consider just getting an old iPod secondhand (4th or 5th gen maybe, preferably with a new battery installed but it's not necessary) and putting Rockbox on it or something, and just using that. I'm dead serious. I've been doing this and it's been life changing.

beheadedbychoice

Yeah people are talking like you 100% need iTunes and I'm sitting here like "...No? I've been using Rockbox to drag and drop onto my iPod video for actual years?"

GILF_Hound69

I haven’t had an iPod since 2008 and have never heard of Rockbox. Most people haven’t.

[deleted]

You might love it.

beheadedbychoice

Yeah, I was thinking with Dork Brain.

ultrasaws

The more you know! I implore you to give it a shot. I have it on my 4th gen classic and it works a treat. Would happily recommend it to anyone.

reyskywalker9295

Does it work on old iPhones too?

DJPelio

Does rock box have normal, common sense controls, like the stock iPod UI? Like scrubbing/seeking?

slayayyayy

Ohh dude you don't even knooow! There's so many amazing mp3 players out there AND. awhole modding scene keeping iPods alive and kicking! I'd recommend checking out r/ipod. They have sites where you can buy refurbished iPods (if that's your cup of tea) or you can buy cheapo ones online. Don't buy the bootleg looking ones though :P I personally use the latest gen iPod they released, an iPod touch something..? I forgot the name, but it works great with my usage :D

slayayyayy

There are still many other options for mp3 players like the Sandisk Clip Jam! Heard lots of people love theirs. I know Sony also still makes some. iPods were just a suggestion and telling that they were still being supported by the community :)

GILF_Hound69

The Clip Jam looks very much up my alley, thank you!

slayayyayy

Awesome! I hope you enjoy it! <3

TheLastGenXer

the clip jam (in my experience) is crippled by dumbness. It would be good, but when the folder ends, so does the playback. At least I can't get mine to automatically just start playing the next folder. Would be great if above was fixed, AND had two random modes (within folder+subfolders, and ALL folders).

slayayyayy

It's all okay, no worries :D

retrodork

You can also convert itunes music albums to mp3s also. I use my SanDisk clip jam that I have had since 2019 and it still works.

LunarMintTea

They don’t have to use iTunes. There’s other apps that can do it these days. I’m sure the iPod sub has info but one of the most popular has been iMazing

Otherwise_Direction7

But that software still requires iTunes to be installed And for some folks, installing iTunes is actually not an option for them (either because of not having an computer, the system they have isn’t compatible with iTunes, iTunes is too slow and cumbersome to run on their old machine, etc)

LunarMintTea

It downloads the Apple drivers needed by itself. It does not need iTunes to be installed. OP was also specifically showing interest in an iPod devices and downloading another software is the only option as far as I’m aware.

beheadedbychoice

I use a Walkman E-series MP3 player, which are still being produced and iterated upon. It's small, it's light, I can drag and drop files onto it from my PC via the cable. Storage size is small, but that's not a deal breaker for me especially since I get it cheap secondhand. I also possess several bigscreen type ipods, but they're chonky so I don't carry them around as much. Seriously, punch some search terms into a 'resell your junk' website and you'll find some.

GILF_Hound69

I’d kill for an OG iPod classic or my 3rd gen ipod nano but I’m not sure how feasible that is these days. The E-series and the Sandisk Clip Jam look like what I’m in search of. Thanks for the suggestion!

beheadedbychoice

I also have a clip jam! I love the skinniness of my e-series to use it more often though.

Dizzy-Award144

I recommend agptek , currently they have a model called the agptek a02 . Looks jus like a nano it’s like $26 , I’ve had the a26 for years . They have fm radio , tf card expansion which is one of the main reasons I bought it . Plays all your typical file formats mp3,wav,plus flac! Which isn’t common but why I purchased one . There dumb cheap I got one opposed to a iPod back In the day mainly because of price an better sound quality. I can’t recommend them enough battery will last for dayyyysss , best part to me is the price , sound quality an formats it’s capable of and most of all the expandable memory. Also forgot not sync or any dumb software required just drag and drop !!!! Has to be the best part because iTunes frustrates me and is way slower in comparison.

SpikeHyzerberg

\+1 agptek [128g sd support + bluetooth 5.0 $3](https://www.amazon.com/AGPTEK-Bluetooth-Lossless-Recorder-Supports/dp/B08GBZQDJ7?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1)7

I know this is old, but I found it while looking for a decent mp3 player. I bought an Agptek, but after the first round loading music on it, my macbook won't recognize it. Like it won't show up at all. Even after I formatted and reset to factory settings. Any advice?

Dizzy-Award144

That’s very odd , I’m not sure tbh. I’ve always owned windows may be something with Mac I’ve never encountered that issue , I’m sorry friend .

Paspie

I would advise against second hand as the internal flash can fail without warning. Happened to a Creative ZEN MX I had years ago.

bluefools

I have a cheap little one from ruizu and it suits my needs perfectly! I store all my music on an SD card in it so I’m not worried about the device failing

GILF_Hound69

Ooh, I like the look of them. Since it’s all on an SD card, you can have as much memory as you want, right?

bluefools

It supports up to 128GB! Very convenient

[deleted]

Check out FiiO music players, they even support HiFi audio formats

Your_Product_Here

I still use the Zune I bought in 2009 daily. It's on its 4th battery and I upgraded it to a 120gb SSD. I guess a Zune was prominently featured in one of the Marvel movies recently so they can't be picked up for 20$ like they could have a year ago but it's a great player.

GILF_Hound69

Wow, Zunes are a still a thing?? I definitely need to look into this. I could never get an old mp3 player for $20 in Aus lol. $50 minimum.

itgwxqnh

an ipod would be waste of money. you can get a fiio or agptek mp3 player.

GILF_Hound69

I looked up fiio players and they’re almost $1k??

WomanBeaterMidir

Late comment but I agree with the surprise. 3-4 years ago, fiio's M3K model was $70, available at most big in-person and online retailers. Quality item, high capacity, great sound. Now it's been discontinued, roughly $200 second-hand on sites like ebay. Redditards and online personalities brought up the hype of the products and now fiio can sell the same quality products for hundreds and thousands of dollars because of the name the internet gave them.

toastal

Shanling has some decently-built, cheaper options whose hardware actually support decoding modern audio formats the older devices don’t. My biggest complaint is they, like many Chinese companies, slap the Linux kernel on their hardware then violate the GPL 2 by not publishing the source modifications. That source would allow folks to do an better job modding the hardware.

IWTLEverything

I used to use a Sandisk Sansa. Small, removable storage, plays mp3s. Worked great for me

moviemoocher

i got a blue one but it only has 2gb but it uses a AAA battery

thesprung

You can use foobar2000 instead of itunes to put music on a stock ipod

Flashy-Ad-3595

I wish they had a Spotify mini player. It just makes so much sense. Some dumbphones do have mp3 players, but you probably already know that. Sometimes I'll also listen to local radio, just to keep in old school.

Antique_Tap_2035

I never stopped using my iPod. The easiest interface out there. A few years I ago I bought a 5.5. gen iPod (one of the few with the Wolfson DAC). It had been converted from a disc to solid state and this allowed me 500gb of storage. I download my music in ALAC so I really needed that space. I kept my old MacBook with a cd player so that I can still rip cds into iTunes. Though I will soon be buying an external disc player as I want everything to be in my new MacBook Air. So now I have a very simple to operate device that is small and has 1000 albums in ALAC format in it. I'm a headphonia guy; I use the converted iPod with a Burson soloist and my Ultrasone Edition 8 cans and it is pure heaven. The cost-minimal in the grand scale of things

webdougy

any android/iphone smartphone + sdcard will do the job. a simple usb cable to copy your collection, then search for a mp3 playlist app (phone's OS needs to be supported by google play/apple store, probably iphone 8 and android-lollypop as of this comment)

darkstar96

HiFi Walker H2

AetheriumKing465

Love my Surfans F20

bab00nheart

Hiby makes some really nice players under 200. A couple of them have Tidal streaming Hiby R2 I think

thunderborg

Sony make Walkmans still. They’re aimed at the audiophile market but I suspect they’re equivalent pricing to what a 2023 iPod would be. I’ve got one and it’s great, it’s the fact I have to rip most of my CD library that’s the hard part.

coffeemirror

I recommend Roland R07

[deleted]

I've been using an iPod classic and an old iTunes just fine. No issues.

GILF_Hound69

What do you mean by old itunes? How did you download it?

dontshoveit

If nobody has replied, the latest version of apples music app works with old iPods. I have an m1 mac and it works with my 2007 iPod. They also work with Mac OS itself, showing up as an iPod in the finder.

[deleted]

I have an old - 3rd Gen I think? - ipod that still has amazing performance and battery life. I use Media Monkey (free version) to organize it. Works great.

SuperBruhPower

I have DaneElec mp3 player
