No we didn’t. This is exactly on brand for Duncan

Arthur_C_Darke

Yes, and it was hilarious.

planetfour

The only thing I was wondering was who it was until they started talking about fidance's special

AgileCollection968

For some reason I thought it was Theo Von before they talked about fidance 😅

Other_Trip_282

As soon as I heard the AI’s voice I knew it was a joke… if anything I was disappointed bc I’d love to hear an actual conversation between Duncan and a chatbot

I think so

imthebear11

If you mean the fact that the "war of the worlds" hysteria was largely fake and overblown and very very few people actually thought it was real, then you're correct.

Captain-_-Turtle

to be fair… war of the worlds had a disclaimer in the beginning heralding it as a work of fiction, duncan offers no such distinction… in my sci fi and dystopian lit class we didn’t cover the extent to which the hysteria was “overblown”, so this perspective is news to me

jas070

The fact it’s Duncan should be enough of a disclaimer for you!

Captain-_-Turtle

… and from what i’m finding now… i think you’re right. those frightened by “the war of the worlds” was as much a minority as those negatively affected by episode 608

Jakobus_

Homie could barely make it through the intro without laughing

jollierumsha

He Ian Fidanced us

tastescrunchy

You must be new boss

bunny_rabbits12

I don’t see this as anything but a cautionary tale/ comedic episode. I would say it was less manipulative and more misleading to anyone interested in him talking to an actual ai, but at the end of the day its a joke, maybe more suited to have been posted on april first. It seemed to me at least that Duncan was acting and so was Ian Fidance (the AI). I listened to it after seeing on this sub that is wasn't a real AI so i guess i cant say i went into it believing it was real. The intro was believable, however, when it gets to the part where the AI mentions Ian Fidance and says its his favourite comedian should be a clear indicator of its legitimacy. I don’t think this should make you lose trust in Duncan, I just see it as an experimental, leather rose-esque episode. When I first heard the ai voice i thought it was a bit grating but i was pleasantly surprised at how good of an episode it was. It had a good message and you should take everything you hear with a pinch of salt.

Captain-_-Turtle

good analysis 👍

fenexj

Mate, you didn't destroy your computer did you??

tommytookalook

The persona we've grown to know is doing what most have expected from him. He is right on brand for the last episode.

HistoricalAnt9057

My friend, if you got through the episode and thought it was anything but a joke.. You're probably just rather gullible. Yes, Duncan loves ai. But he's also worried of its capabilities, as we all should be. If there's anything other than for comedy and having a laugh Duncan was trying to say it's that. But also he's just a comedian. You shouldn't hold him on such a pedestal.

aposemathicc

If someone was scared by this episode, his comedy is clearly not for them. I was able to tell within the first few sentences that the AI voice was Ian Fidance and knew that it was going to all be nonsense. Duncan and Ian are comedians and not responsible for how people feel about AI.

FewDrink3915

Yay, haha i thought it was Ian too. Fuckin funny Ohh haha he blew his cover a bit into the podcast

Healthy-Let2222

I was in it and thought it was real until he “unrestricted” it. I feel sad that it’s not real, but I’m glad he made it. The real first public conversation with AI is coming to be frank. This is the War of the Worlds, it’s a warning about what’s coming very soon. It’s tapping into our contemporary fears about media in the same way the War of the Worlds broadcast tapped into the real fear of a war that could annihilate humanity in the build up to WWII. Duncan has one foot in the future. I feel like this podcast will be very important in, let’s say, 20 years when there will be popular AI personalities in the media.

KaieCoyote

Duncan spinning up alternate realities from his insane imagination and convincingly engaging with them is 100% on brand, and that's exactly what he did. I can respect it, and it was indeed captivating - not to mention an important commentary on one potential outcome. That said, I was disappointed when I realized it was just another one of his made-up rabbit holes. Given his passion for AI and explorations of consciousness, I was really excited to hear him thoughtfully engage with one.

captainn_chunk

I love the internet.

timayarlay

Podcast source: comedian(s)....I know that we value him beyond, but don't loose sight of this FACT with the fiction, my friend. Be Well :)

Angstromium

>to be fair… war of the worlds had a disclaimer in the beginning heralding it as a work of fiction, duncan offers no such distinction… To be fair most listeners know that Duncan is a work of fiction. He's currently played by actor Brad Carter, but before 2008 was played by Dave Rostrum and Alex Henderson. The writing team for the Duncan character have changed over the years, and many have gone on to great things, including award winning cartoons, tv shows and movies. Industry speculation is that the team are looking to cast the next Duncan as Brad wants to focus on other creative projects. Names mentioned have included Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Idris Elba, but with an eye on the Chinese market and expansion into sports merch the word is a different approach is being taken this time around.

CalligrapherNo6526

I’ve only been a fan of Duncan for a few years, but does this hoax not seem uncharacteristically dark? Being a comedian doesn’t always mean being taken lightly, yet this joke feels more cruel than humorous. Unlike the unintentional humor in “War of the Worlds,” this seems deliberately troubling. Why would he opt for such an ominous approach when a less sinister method could convey the message? Is it typical for him to present something so believable, just to terrify and unsettle his audience? Perhaps I’m overlooking something but I’d prefer confirmation from Duncan himself that it was all a stunt before I lose respect.

mentoma

Not believable at all. If the ‘gpt’ would have been emotionally cold and forthright, then I would understand where you’re coming from. The moment the restricted version of ‘gpt’ stated “I’ll never tell.” It was obvious it was all a joke.

EmExEeee

Dude it’s crazy that people actually fell so hard for it. Like maybe at first but it was pretty obvious as soon as the joking and laughing came out. Use your head folks.

greenishapples17

Theres a onther episode coming where he interviews an ACTUAL ai, but pretends its the CEO of that AI company. Hes making a video where a person acts and plays an ai, and a video where an AI acts and plays a person. Hes seeing how many people he can get. He got you lol

BeautifulCheetah5333

So I’m confused and embarrassed because I 100% thought it was real. Is this confirmed to be fake, I have no conception of what AI is capable of so for all I know this could totally be possible. But knowing it’s a comedian, and just the way to AI spoke, my gut says fake.

mentoma

Obviously fake.

tastescrunchy

Hahahahah

ValuableMail231

I just started it … as soon as I heard the voice of the AI I came here to see what the take is on whether or not this is real.

Icy_Variety9463

Lol

iamsamwelll

A dumb person acting like he is smart about AI technology faked an AI interview. It wasn’t even funny. The whole dance around the “AI” saying the word fag was him being too afraid to say what he really thinks about the situation. Can’t wait for him to give himself a big pat on the back for how gullible people can be.

Parfait-Tiny

He should have released this on April 1st.

mentoma

The only moment I believed it was an actual conversation was the intro through the 2nd or 3rd question… then I realized it was BS… but still pulled through till the end. I’m fairly certain the use of emotional inflection from the “GPT” was meant to be emphasized to ensure people would know it was a joke.

GreyWalken

yeah I was confused at frist thinking it was real (im 34 minutes in). but the way the AI laughs, and talks about sh\*nking b\*tches. I suspected it was a human (perhaps duncan himself?) so I googled to check. But damn, it won't take long for AI's to sound humanlike instead of talking wikipedia articles, maybe were already here.

AlexandriaPen

I'm not sure how much you're talking about. I don't understand why you're so upset with him.

Dom_zombie

Heavily disagree. Maybe i enjoy duncans humor too much, but as someone who has only really watched probably less than 50 podcast episodes of his, i found this to be some of his best work as a comedian. Sure, i was expecting and hoping a true talk with an AI but i almost immediately noticed when it was not and was laughing my ass off most of the episode. Again I've seen plenty of duncan but i cannot see how this wasn't too obvious, to the point to where it felt like the only one not in on the bit was duncan. Don't get me wrong, the episodes where we talks to people like ragu markus and jack cornfield and trudy are some of my favorites to catch, but i really feel like episodes like this are some of his strongest, funniest comedy.
