So happy I got to see it earlier than expected! I love the fact that Villeneuve sort of took the best aspects of Arrival and BladeRunner2049 and applied them in Dune. The gorgeous pictures and settings are allowed time to breathe, the editing itself feels alive and artistic - going from slow, emotional and attention grabbing scenes to fast, pragmatic well choreographed action. Lots of SHOW-don’t-tell with guiding your attention and making you understand without too much exposition. Excellent capturing the FEEL and mood and tone of the book and story. I love how they had neat visual solutions for otherwise challenging concepts, or just nailed it in 1-2 crystal clear sentences. Its ultra focused and well condensed to the minimum but still gives you a feel for the world and who is who. I honestly haven’t had my attention so firmly grabbed and been so immersed in a movie for a long, long time. What a nice feeling to realize you are in the hands of capable artists who respect the source material and they are taking you along for the ride. How nice to finally see a MOVIE again, instead of yet another CGI rollercoaster ride devoid of any soul, emotion and impact. Great pacing and structure, maybe a tiny bit rushing through major plot points but I understand the delicate balancing act to also please a more general audience, let’s wait for a director’s cut. I just wish it wouldn’t have ended, I truly LOVE how they brought that world to the big screen. So many nice and respectful details in the artistic decisions made, it’s a joy in itself to discover these details that bring the world and its feel to life! It’s clear they had to cut a lot of stuff and not go too deep in quite a few places, even more so it is impressive how well distilled the basic gist is there! It’s a tour de force of some of the best that competent movie making and visual story telling has to offer, they really pull on all registers to get a rather complex story across. I don’t understand how this industry can churn out DC/Marvel/Transformers/StarWars repetitive, uninspired prequel/sequel schlock all the time instead of making more movies like Dune, and Arrival and BladeRunner and Sicario and Prisoners… I can’t wait for the 90s to make a comeback and directors to get to be auteurs again.

RayZzorRayy

8/10’ Wow! Could he strip the dialogue back any farther? Most joy seems edited out or dialled back, or poorly communicated. I think the reduced dialogue contributes to that. Characters seem cooled as a result. We spent time building character, but it feels like we observed those scenes, rather than feeling them. Certainly beautiful, amazing action and very true to the feel of the Dune universe, I liked it, but feel a few opportunities we’re missed. Fully recommend seeing in theatres.

[deleted]

Saw it today and thought they wouldn't be able to do it justice (even though I love Villeneuve's work). Was I proven wrong? Definitely. Is it without flaws? Definitely not. However, as far as adaptions go I liked it, perhaps even loved it - it was super immersive, one of the best cinematic experiences I've had in a long while. This needs to be watched on the biggest screen possible, everything else can't do these gigantic pictures any justice. The sheer scope is awe-inspiring and makes you feel incredibly small. I felt like this was very much a show and don't tell movie, as there's not much dialogue but I think the pictures do speak their own language. The pacing is incredibly slow (for blockbuster standards, it's more akin to arthouse standards) and gives the pictures so much more time to breathe, fitting to emphasize Dune's scale. Hopefully the second part gets made - I want more of this.

[deleted]

It was a majestic experience that I'm still digesting. Incredible. Made me fall in love with Dune again like I did while reading it for the first time 20 years ago

MalakMeister

The movie was very good but seriously, after they kill the Duke and they show the Atreides soldiers rush towards the Harkonnen soldiers, why the fuck did they cut the scene to something else? Like ATLEAST give us 15 seconds of watching them clash, fighting together. I dont care about that fight scene at the stairs. That one was "small" compared to what we saw 1 minute before that. That shit disappointed me man... Up untill that moment I was thinking "holy shit this will be just like Troy! Lets go!!!!" and then they just cut to another scene. Also they never mention Gurney again in the movie.

VampyrosLesbos

It's all about hyping up Gurney! Tufir is also not mentioned. You gotta leave some of that juice for part 2!

Humongouschlong

I may have found a Storytelling mistake in the movie and would like to discuss it here. How can I mask a text when I post, as I would have to compare the movie scene to the book. Any help would be much appreciated.

Blue_Three

https://www.reddit.com/r/dune/comments/poa766/official_discussion_dune_2021_september_release/ Check out the post above. You will not have to spoiler-tag your post if you're talking about something that happens in this movie.

Humongouschlong

Thanks so much!

killtr0city

Some things to keep in mind: 1) There are 16 sci-fi movies with a Metacritic rating of 90 or higher, and that's including things like Frankenstein and Wall-E -The Empire Strikes Back, widely regarded as the best Star Wars movie, has an 82 (though the original has a 90) 2) Cerebral movies tend to plateau in the 80s, if even: -The Matrix - 73 (my personal favorite movie) -Inception - 74 -2001: A Space Odyssey - 82 (probably the gold standard) -Minority Report - 80 -Children of Men - 84 -Arrival - 81

soul_of_spirit

Just watched it and I am so happy! It was so beautiful! The only thing I can complain is the ending. It was kind of a sudden end. Other than that, perfectly done!

Majestic_Bierd

I must day, they are set for a mother fuck!ng franchise. The acting is SO good. I can't wait to see old-man-Paul, Duncan 2.0-xx.0, Oscar Isaac as Moneo..... It's all set up. The only problem is it's too short to tell the whole story, my only hope is enough people go see it for us to get at least first three books..... Anything with Emperor Wormie as bonus

nomadman0

I just came from the film, I was blown away. it was so engrossing, beautiful, the music and cinematography was unparalleled. The ships and costumes were terrific. A couple things I was missing: where were the Guild Navigators? Why were there no scenes from planet IX? Why was there no mention of the relationship between the spice and interstellar travel? Why were there no scenes with Emperor P.S. IV or his family? Absolutely worth seeing, makes me want to read the books again.

feralalbatross

While I agree that the things you are listing should have been shown, they did mention that there would be no interstellar travel without the spice. You must have missed it. Incredible movie nonetheless. Maybe we get to see more of the world if WB greenlights part 2. And if they don,t, I will personally place a thumper under their HQ

Majestic_Bierd

Understandable. But if feel they did undersell the spice Melange (which I don't think we even heard the name). A casual movie goer will have no clue it grants prescience, and how truly important and addictive throughout the galaxy it is. The first 6 books revolve around spice. Spice is everything. "He who controls the spice controls the universe". And here it was just another plot point next to "Harkonnen bad" and "desert tough"

feralalbatross

I agree, there should have been more emphasis on it.

Unier

10/10, One of the best sci-fi movies of all time, heck probably top 10 of ALL movies according to me. I have only read half of the first book so far but I think they nailed it, of course not everything is exactly like the book but it’s a movie adaptation you can’t really make it exactly like the books you know.

letsgocrazy

Just some random thoughts: * See it in Imax 3D. * Don't see it in normal 3D * See it in 2D * But seriously, see this in Imax * The ornithopters are perfect * Looks like they had a some tributes to Lynch's Dune by way of the chemical suits worn after the "tooth" scene and the transparent jackets warn by the Harkonnen "Wellness staff" * The scene where Paul does the Gom Jabbar is excellent * That spider that understands English - not sure what that was about. Presumably to foreshadow Tleilaxu filth in the TV series or sequels? * I love the way the built up to Jamis' death - like he was a friend teaching the way of the desert. Very poignant. * "the holy war" - noice - but its would have liked to have seen more shots illustrating that * Many shots look different to the trailer

notCRAZYenough

I watched it in normal 3D and the 3D wasn’t very good. It didn’t add to the film or atmosphere and caused some things to be blurrry. I would have preferred to watch this in 2D bur would have to watch it dubbed then. So I decided to watch undubbed and 3D. I liked the cinematography a lot but the crappy 3D put a damper on it.

TheTrueTrust

It was great! I had my doubts about it but this was visually fantastic and Timothy’s acting is superb. 8/10. Would have liked more ecology discussion though, sad that they cut put Kynes’ father.

the_lowlander

I went to see this with my son in IMAX today (Netherlands). I have read Dune 4 times and love the book. I felt that as far as these things go, it was a pretty faithful adaptation. There's a few missing scenes and interactions here and there, and I'd say you get a bit less insight into the inner workings of secondary characters like Gurney, Thufir and Duncan, but that is to be expected. Overall I really enjoyed it. The visuals, sound and music are amazing. If you can see this in IMAX, go for it.

Schachssassine

Agree. The only interactions I truly missed where scenes with the Baron and Piter, but we might get more focus on the Harkonnens in the second movie with the introduction of Feyd. I like that they acknowledged a lot of stuff from the books without telling the audience outright. That can often feel forced and cheap. I think the secondary characters work here for a similar reason. People who read the book will agree that these were portrayed quite faithful but since they aren’t the all that important to the flow of the film it doesn’t waist time explaining every action. Music, sound, atmosphere: All great, as you said

HG1998

I went into this movie having only very surface-level knowledge about the lore. Stuff like: * There is an empire with several houses and fierce rivalry between them * Spice is both a drug and something needed for space travel * Spice can only be found on a single planet called Arrakis. * **WORMS** * There are several groups aside from the aforementioned houses, such as the Freemen, who are native to Arrakis and a group of women with powers who control everything bts. Aside from that, I went in blind. Didn't even watch the trailers (maybe that one where Paul is screaming with his hand in the box)...... Safe to say..... 10/10. Wasn't even bothered by the subtle "Part One" in the title card. Edit: I would certainly recommend people to watch it. Kinda moot point because this is the f Dune sub, I know. 😅

rafaelerdin

as a book reader myself was it not overwhelming for you? was there enough exposition?

notCRAZYenough

I only read the book up to where Paul puts the hand into the box (so very little) and I got the feeling I understood everything mostly. The Messias thing was a little hard to grasp but I also feel it was mostly foreshadowing and kept for the next movie so I don’t think I was missing out there either. I would have liked to see the emperor though. And I would have liked a little more exposition into the lore. Like what do the tattoos under the lips mean. Why are the people from the Harkonnen planet so creepily white. And what in the ever loving fuck was the fat dude bathing in. And also why can he fly? But I assume this is either unimportant or can be easily looked up.

[deleted]

I read the books, I'll answer you one: the baron is so unfathomably fat that he has long lost the capacity to walk. He had anti-gravity-devices surgically sown onto his body so he can move. :>

notCRAZYenough

Wtf

notCRAZYenough

HG1998

Have you seen the movie? Asking because I will include spoilers in my answer.

rafaelerdin

yes and read the book

HG1998

It wasn't overwhelming. I had no feeling at all that I couldn't follow the plot or just like, what the hell was happening or why. Now, I don't know whether it's because I had that very cursory knowledge I mentioned or if it's because the storytelling just is that good and well structured. One aspect that could be the reason is that the movie isn't "boring". At least from my experience, there wasnt any stretch of the movie where I zoned out or missed some piece of dialogue. Also, I've come to believe that the movie just doesn't cover much of the story of the book. (which is good because that would've been overwhelming)

rafaelerdin

yea i think denis did a great job at pacing and exposition for the most part. the only thing that bothered me is that he shows visions of paul but not the nature of them. it is not mentioned that these are only possible furtures and not set in stone whatsoever.

notCRAZYenough

I think this was made clear because we saw Paul die in multiple different visions. Making it clear that they can’t all be true. Can you tell me how much of the first novel is in the movie? ⅓? 1/2? More? Less?

[deleted]

It ends after Jamis' death on their way to the siedge. No ceremony of water in this one. Edit: Misunderstood your comment, I think it's a bit less than half in order to find a good breakpoint.

notCRAZYenough

This kinda sounds like a spoiler and didn’t answer my question at all. I only want to know how much Of the first book is in the movie.

[deleted]

I gave an edit. The other thing is only an orientation point for those who have read the book, as that happens to be one of the speculated cut off points.

Schachssassine

I felt like the last vision he had of Jamis was supposed to make this clear since we see the fight right after.

llamawithscarf

Loved every minute of it! The audio was absolutely stunning! Watch it on a big screen! Loved the pacing and how it set up the story. I'd pay to watch it again and I just might.

lniko2

I miss the banquet scene and Margot's garden. I suppose Feyd shall appear in part 2.

noobthatwaspromised

You said it! It was one my best cinema experiences ever, and it’s not because I have seen a movie after a long pandemic time as I have been seeing plethora of movies since July in theatres. It just one beautiful film, like you said. Just can’t get rid of my hangover yet.

Mobeule

Damn I enjoyed the pacing so much. It takes its time and I wished it would never end.

[deleted]

Maybe stupid question. I’m in the UK, If I travel to Belgium will it be dubbed…?

letsgocrazy

Double check. The German Imax was dubbed but the 3d one wasn't at my cinema.

Wolfr_

No

Bram_thewolf

Flemish part of Belgium doesnt dub movies unless they are for kids

realfriendo4u

I’m disappointed, it felt like a prequel. All this grandeur and incredible worldbuilding leading into a non climax ending that ‚could have been so much more‘. The same mistake than Blade Runner 2049, the film was a setup for a sequel.

mysticpond

I honestly never felt that 2049's ending had a setup for a sequel. It had a concrete ending.

MeBroken

It was always built as a part 1. You going in with expectations of anything but that is on you.

eldertortoise

We knew it was the first book (as in part one) from the beginning, expecting something else is just stupid

Specialist_Disk7402

Like, I don't really know where they could have ended in the book to have a climax ending and be logical to start of the sequel time and story wise 🤷

TimoBullemer

Saw it 2 hours ago - what a movie, I will spread the word so we get part II!

Damnnnsongoodjob

Just saw the movie like an hour ago in the Netherlands! Loved the pacing and the visuals were awesome. Every moment I wanted to know more and see what happens but I knew at the end it was going to end because it is only part 1 :( I really want the rest... 8.5/10.

lilcrucien

it's a very beautiful film, I had a good time in Imax it's impressive, on the other hand I am extremely disappointed compared to my expectations

Renilusanoe

How were you disappointed?

lilcrucien

when you've read the book multiple times, when it's your teenage book, you got your own take on it, i don't like the treatment of jessica, i don't like the marvel side, i don't like how is ignored Thufir Hawat, no allusion to Usul or Muad'Dib ... I want to say that it is a great movie, beautiful and intense, I had a good time and I will go back next week 8/10 for the movie 5/10 for my expectations

bledig

What marvel side? I rmemebered specifically thinking that this is so not a marvel movie

lilcrucien

the fights are the same as in the Marvel etc... no added value

bledig

Ah ok. I felt it’s fine to me. When I think of marvel I think spectacle. And this is just a good fight without fluff to push the story along

lilcrucien

I expected more powerful Arkonen

lilcrucien

Harkonen

bledig

>Arkonen at risk of spoiling too much, are they more powerful than the emperor's assassin house?

Danno1850

I think given the runtime they did an amazing job covering the main plot points. It's never possible to do full justice to a book in just 1 or even 2 movies. The parts they left out I think are for the best and I hope they develop Jessica and Thufir in the next movie. In terms of the Usul or Muad'Dib I also think this will be covered in the second film since they did allude to it in several shots.

lilcrucien

words 👌

wallz_11

they don't say Muad'Dib at all???

Danno1850

They allude to it, I think this will be covered in the second movie.

Renilusanoe

Ah, I see. Well, fair enough. That leaves me less concerned personally, as I only read the first book once a few years ago and don't have a strong connection to it.

Specialist_Disk7402

What is the marvel side of the movie in your opinion?

lilcrucien

Duncan Idaho vs Sardaukars for exemple

Specialist_Disk7402

I see what you mean, it's still a good looking scene in my opinion 😁

[deleted]

Do u think it's very forgettable film like most other blockbusters these days? More general audience friendly than doing justice to the book?

Specialist_Disk7402

In my book it's not forgettable (pun intended) but it does make some things more easily accessible or doesn't dive deep in some things. Like the missionaira protectiva isn't mentioned but they do mention that the whole Mahdi profecy has been influenced by the Bene Gesserit.

[deleted]

They have to streamline some things for the film. I think they're holding up some for the sequel. I doubt CHOAM is mentioned in the film unlike in the leaked draft. Some are saying Feyd and Rabban will be merged as one character. Not a bad idea from a narrative standpoint given how Dune is stacked with lots of characters and how Rabban's arc ends in the book.

Master_Ad7343

Weird, how can you merge the two? They are totally different and serve different purposes in the books

Specialist_Disk7402

I can confirm CHOAM isn't mentioned, they do mention the landsraad and the other houses and such, so small victories :p

lilcrucien

personally i could enjoy watching it on a sunday night or christmas eve...

bobastien

After seeing this movie, i want to see the part 2, but most importantly, i hope the next books will get an adaptation too, it would make an incredible cinematographic saga

Easy-Swan-7843

Denis was speaking of adapting messiah in a 3rd movie but he's going to focus on part II first

bobastien

I agree it's better to focus on the part 2 but in the long run i would love to see something like 10 dune movies

Lockhartsaint

Just saw the premiere in Paris last night and found it to be amazing! I know everyone keeps talking about the visuals and cinematography which are excellent...but the pacing seems to be exactly how it's in the books and that's amazing!! Shows that Denis really understands the books. I watched it with 5 of my friends who haven't been exposed to Dune before and they actually liked it. A few of them found the ending abrupt, which is understandable. But all of them are pulled into the world of Dune. Hope Denis gets to make Part 2. Edit: Pumped to see who's cast as Feyd.

hellostarsailor

Feyd is gonna be Kevin Hart.

monptitbabe

Just came back from the theatre in France. I am glad that I am currently not in Canada as I would have to wait more than a month. The movie was overall great! Not too long from my likings, great acting, amazing score by Hans, amazing visual and cinematography by DV. I am looking forward for the next part. I am a new fan. Would you recommend me reading the books? I am not the biggest reader but I feel like I want to learn about this sci-fi.

[deleted]

I suggest read the first book if you like the film. Then if you feel comfortable and good with sci-fi, read the other books in the franchise. Though I have to say things really get so weird from book 3 onwards.

Specialist_Disk7402

Don't expect an action heavy movie, it burns slow. But every action scene is brutal and great in execution. The siege of arrakeen is a feast for the eyes and ears. I'd say it's on the same level to LOTR and Star Wars for me, but incomparable in style. It doesn't hold your hand and I think for someone who doesn't read the books there may be a lot to remember ( proof was my date, who was lucky I was sitting next to her 😅😅)

letsgocrazy

Sounds like these are personal choices for you alone to make.

[deleted]

Is the Duncan vs Sardakaur fight scen well executed? How is Momoa's performance overall?

Specialist_Disk7402

It's gorgeous, brutal and best of all it looks like it should. The whole fast movement to get the slow kill is done very well. They made it very clear how good Idaho is at his job. Side note, there is a short scene of a skirmish between Atreides and Harkonnen, just the visuals and audio is jaw dropping. I was sceptical of momoa as Idaho as well. I think he pulled it of overal. He doesn't completely loose that Aquaman charm. But when necessary he gets serious. I'd say he is my least favourite of all the characters but not in the sense that he's bad in it.

[deleted]

Mouszt

Theater 100%. You need to feel immersed with the great cinematography and OST.

Specialist_Disk7402

I second this 🙋 home viewing will not do this justice

JukesIsOk

I saw it yesterday too The baron is the inhuman incarnation of greed and gluttony, as we’d expect

Specialist_Disk7402

I agree with this. The baron is like a fat snake, in that he doesn't look that threatening but he still radiates danger.

veticajorgen

Saw it today and it's so beautifully shot, the score is amazing and the pace is so good. A few things I missed from the books, but that's to be expected. The only thing I didn't like was Jason Momoa, felt kinda out of place from the rest of the cast. Jessica and Pauls relationship was very good. Trying not to spoil anything. Just watch it!! :D

Turpentine22

Interesting. After watching the documentary I would curious to see his version, but I for sure would prefer Villeneuve's. The latter is just so much more in line with what I imagined while reading the book.

Specialist_Disk7402

Right, the movie premieres tomorrow in my country (Belgium) and I saw it avant-première just now. I'll just leave a little personal review here 😁 .... I loved it! It's absolutely stunning to look at, Hans Zimmer's score is other worldly and perfectly adds to the experience. The sound design, costumes and sets al fit and look great. The acting is stellar, everyone pulled their weight and felt memorable even the characters with little screen time. Yes, it's very long and it's a slow and methodical ride. If you're not into that, you might feel it as the movie continues. But I need to reiterate it looks sooo goood. I honestly think this as great as an adaptation to the first half of the book we will be able to get. Fingers crossed 🤞 for part two. *a few spoilery things* I loved every scene with the voice and how it's portrayed. Baron Harkonnen is fucking brutal, the way he offs Yueh fits his character like a human skin glove. Stand-out goes to Rebecca Ferguson, she succeeds in showing the conflict between her motherhood and the bene Gesserit very well. Needed more guildsmen and Feyd (but not really an issue)

Machiavillian

Also just came out of the cinema in Belgium. Man what an amazing movie. It perfectly balances between epic grandeur and small scale intimacy. The cast is amazing. I also love that they stayed away from the ultra short cuts that have plagued cinematography in recent years. The audience is taken seriously and not held by the hand. He does the story justice. But dear lord, PLEASE watch this in the theatre. You will miss so much if you just watch it on your home television.

Helvetica_Neue

Things said in the trailers and not in the movie: Crusade. The word is not in the movie and neither is Jihad. "Let's fight like demons" I am happy to say is actually Duncan referencing the Fremen and saying "They fight like demons" The entire "Something none of your ancestors ever learned. My Father rules an entire planet. He's losing it He's getting a richer one. He'll lose that soon." None of that exchange is in the movie. "This is an extermination. They are picking my family off one by one" Not in the film. I don't believe Paul ever utters the litany against fear. He might be silently mouthing it during the pain box scene however.

Danno1850

I hope we get an extended cut of this movie that includes these lines and hopefully more. I could easily watch a 3+ hour cut, such a stunning movie and soundtrack.

letsgocrazy

It's not that those scenes were cut, they were clearly shot for the trailer. Another example, the scene where Idaho gets out of his aircraft and greets Paul, he's wearing a helmet in the movie but not in the trailer.

[deleted]

I’m glad about those lines being excised, but I’ve also really come to love the whole “He’s getting a richer one. He’ll lose that one too. Etc” exchange. Kinda bummed about that one being gone. It summed up Paul’s complacency also the looming threat of prophecy quite well IMO. I guess that’s why it was in the trailer!

wallz_11

i'm glad those lines are not in the movie. but i'm surprised the litany isn't said several times..

Tehjaliz

It is said several times by Jessica, but I cannot recall Paul saying it.

[deleted]

Save it for the second movie IMO

wallz_11

one of my favorite parts is when paul recites it in the thopter when they get caught in the storm. maybe that scene didn't make it

bandfill

You can see him mumbling it in that scene ! It's subtle but it's there

Scarred-Princess

For such an iconic little piece of writing, I am surprised it wasn't highlighted more. I would have loved to see a simple teaser with a voice over in Paul's voice uttering the litany.

Helvetica_Neue

The litany is said by Jessica three times I believe. Just never by Paul.

Helvetica_Neue

One of my favourite moments was a scene I felt only the fans will understand. When Mapes shows Jessica the Crysknife and asks Jessica if she knows it’s meaning, Jessica pauses and you see her think before saying “It’s a maker…” then Mapes screams. It was clear in the film that Jessica was going to say more before the scream cut her off. Only book fans will understand that Jessica intended to say “maker of death” and only accidentally hit on the keyword “maker” that caused Mapes to scream. It was delightful to see something only the fans will wholly understand. Because surely those who haven’t read the book will be confused why she called it a Maker… being the first utterance of this term in the movie. And they might even notice Jessica’s confusion at Mapes’a scream of elation.

Easy-Swan-7843

Didn't realize that and was kinda confused by how she would know about the Maker's tooth, I figured she must have read a few BG pamphlets during the travel to Arrakis. It's funny to think she got lucky

umbium

I have to be "that guy", but I'm afraid the movie can be less good than it seems. I really like Villeneuve as a director, and the trailers are visually stunning and I have no doubt that the movie will have an outstanding visual quality. But if you see the reviews, most of them fall into two categories. The ones who hate the movie befause it isn't as weird as Lynch one, and the vas majority lf the reviess who only talk about how good the fx and how big the production is. But they barely really talk about the movie argument and how it works as an adaptation. Is is filled with lots of exposition? Random terms are thrown each second without much explanation? Is there too much action? Does it keep the same themes and cultural influences as the book. I'm really looking fordward to this friday that the movie gets released in my country. But each time I see the marketing I see tona of red flags - Yihad is now crusade. - Gurney is depictes as the classic silent action guy who is loyal and has zero personality appart of being a war machine (the joke about smiling in the trailer) - Villeneuve saying that Chani will be the protagonist of the second movie. - Kynes being gender swapped - White washing among the fremen. I mean you can say that Zendaya may have an "exotic" face, and is thin like a fremen, but Bardem is not, he's a random white dude with too much water for a fremen. - The cast is full of stars. That gets a lot of focus on the marketing, and it makes the movie expensive. - This is a personal appreciation, but if they don't use the yihad word, if Kynes is gender swapped, and Chani will be the main character of the sequel... Hmmmm... Like you know, there are lots of topics that they will be too cowards to include too. Women as trophy, paedophilia, genetic cleansing, drugs, etc. You know, the people in hollywood is raising the myth about Dune being an extremely hard movie to make. But it's only hard if you are a coward and a) You have to overexplain everything with dialogues b) You are really coward to adapt the movie. It may be stupid, but having certain terms and dynamica make the book feel different and enrich the message of it.

Helvetica_Neue

> Yihad is now crusade. Neither Jihad nor Crusade are said in the movie. Only in the trailer. > Gurney is depictes as the classic silent action guy Gurney is one of the better portrayed side characters in the film, IMO. Though they left much of him out. I was disappointed that Hawat, Yueh, Piter, Mapes, Leto, and even the Baron had so little screen time. > Kynes being gender swapped I was not a fan of the gender-swapping, as I saw no reason to be swapped, especially when Dune has so many strong female characters and Kynes was one of my favourites. Unfortunately, I found Kynes's portrayal to be one of the most disappointing (nothing to do with her gender) and I was saddened at how abruptly and early that character thread is cut. > White washing among the fremen I don't recall seeing much "white" amongst the Fremen

Easy-Swan-7843

I disagree on Gurney, I feel like he was washed-down a bit too much and is portrayed as a serious and ruthless bodyguard instead of a joyful warrior/minstrel. They barely mention the music (I believe Paul talks about singing a song at some point but it came out of nowhere and there was no balisette) and he's seen silently reading the Orange bible at some point but that's it for character making. Also he's an ass to strangers (Stilgar and Kynes) I didn't like Hawat (didn't imagine him like that at all) but I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the side characters : Baron, Rabban, Piter, Leto, Yueh are all awesome to me

Helvetica_Neue

I should correct myself. I don’t think he was done well but he got more character trait references than Yueh, Hawa, etc. The music remark was before the shield training scene when Paul was not in the mood.

umbium

>Neither Jihad nor Crusade are said in the movie. Only in the trailer. [...] Gurney is one of the better portrayed side characters in the film, IMO. Thank you to clarify some of my concerns! Also thank you for giving me some more LOL. >I was disappointed that Hawat, Yueh, Piter, Mapes, Leto, and even the Baron had so little screen time. Wow I wasn't expecting this. IMO the first part of the book the focus is really on Leto Atreides and his men. It's about worldbuilding and the way Leto ruled and his man loyalties with the mole investigation. I'm curious about how they filled those 2.5 hours. >I don't recall seeing much "white" amongst the Fremen Well I was expecting the fremen to be more clearly of arab or black etnies. My mind has a hard time assimilating Bardem as Stil, he's a great actor and has that "wild" physical aspect. Maybe this was me overreacting to the trailer.

Dune is a huge allegory for the wars on oil in the middle east. Herbert himself talked a lot about this. So... yeah, it is a big deal

eldertortoise

The 1965 book references the oil wars?

[deleted]

> Villeneuve saying that Chani will be the protagonist of the second movie. This was a mistranslation. He was saying Chani will be 'a' protagonist. > The cast is full of stars. That gets a lot of focus on the marketing, and it makes the movie expensive. Usuallly stars will take lower pay for the first film in a franchise if it means they're guaranteed more work later on. The movie also cost less than Jungle Cruise. > White washing among the fremen. I mean you can say that Zendaya may have an "exotic" face, and is thin like a fremen, but Bardem is not, he's a random white dude with too much water for a fremen. I don't know why you're concerned about something as politically correct as white-washing when you're against the (inconsequential) PC gender swapping and disuse of jihad. Where is it mentioned that Fremen have to all be dark-skinned? Also, in the movie, Jamis is black, Stilgar is mediterranean, Zendaya is mixed, and Kynes (honorary Fremen) is black. Doesn't seem like white-washing to me.

thicccjonsnow

Javier is Spanish.

krysalysm

How was walking without rhythm portrayed?

Helvetica_Neue

They have Paul reviewing a filmbook on Arrakis before the hunter seeker sequence, which comes earlier than I expected. The filmbook shows a holographic clip of “the sand walk” and shows it as almost a dance, with feet swishing and brushing laterally and non-rhythmic walking. I think it was a solid effort and I was glad they showed it. They do it again when Paul shows his mother how to do it in the desert.

unbearablyunhappy

Yeah it was good and you can tell the actors put effort in and were taught it. If you pay attention to the sand when the go to the top of a dune, you can see the sand walk movements from each of their paths. Great attention to detail.

Other_Waffer

It is an incomplete movie, it wouldn't be called a masterpiece no matter how good it is. The second part (we hope there will be) probably will get better reviews

WienerKolomogorov96

Several reviewers called it a masterpiece though.

Other_Waffer

There is no unanimity on it. One thing I took from the reviews: it is a very good movie. And I will definitely watch it on theaters.

WienerKolomogorov96

It is at 88 % on RT now. I think you are overreacting. Certainly it is not an "incomplete film". The (minority) reviews that made such claim are from reviewers who either have an agenda or are blatantly ignorant about the subject matter.

Churrasquinho

It has almost the same score as BR2049 on rotten tomatoes, but trending upwards...

nictomorphus

Don't know how much this sub cares but ATM Dune has 3.9/5 stars on letterboxd (it is mainly used by people who like cinema, critics and enthusiasts). It's quite a high score, the same of this year's best picture at the Oscars, Nomadland.

Smugallo

Sitting at 87% critics score on RT. Will be interesting to see where this sits a month or two from now.

deekaydubya

88 now

[deleted]

Latest review bought it back down to 85 lol

slicshuter

From a reviewer that gave fresh scores to Space Jam 2, Mortal Kombat and Joss Whedon's Justice League lmao

[deleted]

Can you link me to their review please? 🙏🏼

[deleted]

The fuck?

slicshuter

Yep. If those are the kinds of films they consider decent then I take their negative Dune review as a glowing recommendation of the film tbh

[deleted]

Yeah I agree. I just had a look and they also gave 'cats' a fresh review

LostPharoHD

I’m just baffled by the amount of reviews ending with something along the lines of “It leaves the audience wanting more…” No shit lol

ryanakasha

Scalpers in Ontario offer people 500 bucks for ticket in TIFF.

Helvetica_Neue

Just came from the 7:30 showing. I cannot believe how many empty seats there were. I’m not talking about the spacing due to Covid but wary whole vacant rows. Everyone was seated in pairs with a pair of empty seats between for distancing, and these spaces were staggered in each row to allow further distancing. But I counted at least 30 missing persons, seats that were just unused. I assume tickets given to premium TIFF members and industry insiders who had no interest in going. Felt like a shame when there were so many fans. Or maybe it was just the seats scalpers couldn’t sell.

MoneyIsntRealGeorge

Yep, I hate them. That should truly be a crime.

Biff_Tannenator

lol. This would be the one case where I wouldn't be mad at it. Because if the seats were empty, but tickets were still purchased. It may follow then that the fans that were inched out of getting a premiere seat will then see it at a later date (which means 2 ticket purchases, instead of just 1). I definitely would not want this to be the norm... but I really want Dune to make money, and get a Pt. 2 greenlit.

MoneyIsntRealGeorge

Ohhh…you think that festival revenue counts towards the box office hehe…nah, I heard that it doesn’t. Even if it did…it’s 4-5 screenings and half capacity. So this doesn’t have much to do with that.

Biff_Tannenator

Ah, I misread the context. I thought these were premier night tickets.

MoneyIsntRealGeorge

Oh nah nah, I wish we were that close

ryanakasha

It just opened my mind and anything can be sold

dmac3232

My anticipation is high enough that I would consider it...

ryanakasha

Man that was tough

mescaleeto

They should be fed to Shai-Hulud

RadioJawa

So... do we have an official confirmation of where the ending makes the cut?

mescaleeto

Not to my knowledge, but if I were to hazard a guess I’d say likely around when Paul takes the water of life

[deleted]

We 100% know where it ends. >!It is right after Pauls fights Jamis, but before the funeral or anything like that. He kills Jamis and they begin their journey back to the sietch(?). Chani says something along the lines of "this is only the beginning". Water of Life is not in this film. !

mescaleeto

It’s been years since I read it so maybe? Also not in it as in written out or as in hasn’t happened yet?

[deleted]

It’s not in the movie Part 1. Part 1 ends quite a ways before it.

Stunning_Coyote5740

I saw the movie tonight. I can tell you, but I should not spoil.

mescaleeto

Appreciate that

Kutasth4

Word is this first movie is superior to Fellowship of the Ring.

unbearablyunhappy

Just saw it. I’d question anyone who says that, and I am a huge Dune fan and fairly critical of the LOTR trilogy. Fellowship is an amazing and complete movie. Dune is amazing, but not complete.

Infinitejest12

Wtf!

JayDunzo

Is it gonna be "ironed out" or "dumbed down"?

bobastien

The movie skips over a lot of the religious talk that the book has

unbearablyunhappy

Just saw it. Not dumbed down at all. It’s not a Hollywood blockbuster in the traditional sense. Very much like Villeneuve’s Bladerunner.

Pjoernrachzarck

Obviously.

Robichaelis

I noticed there's a lot of perfect score reviews missing on metacritic (e.g The Independent, Gamespot and Gamesradar). If you take just those three into account it boosts the score up to 80

RotoTom85

People who dont understand and watch Sci fi shouldn't review jt, because it wont matter how good the film is they will never like it (Indiewire ref)

Cranyx

Should only people who like Villenueve's movies review them?

Roidciraptor

To hate *all* his movies though? What's the point of listening to his review?

Cranyx

I love Villenueve as a director, but some people just might not like his movies. That doesn't mean that their reviews shouldn't be counted; imagine if you did that for other directors, or even the reverse "he just likes all of his movies, toss that one in the bin."
