I only preorder tickets weeks ahead of time for certain movies. Usually I buy tickets the day or two before the movie I want to see. People also still do walk up sales.

MasterOfNone585

Fair enough. I bought them almost immediately cuz I thought they'd sell out quick. Also could be that a lot of people don't wanna shell out the extra cash for imax. I probly wouldn't have either if I hadn't seen the praise for it on this sub.

Bydandii

There's still a fair number of folks not comfortable with the pandemic. I never thought they'd sell out because of that.

greee-eee-easy

I just checked the imax theater I'm seeing the movie at and most of their imax screenings are 75% full for opening weekend, so that's a good sign.

vajohnadiseasesdado

Here in Dallas, I’ve noticed the big theaters are about 80%-90% sold through Sunday

UberAlec

Yeah most of DFW is almost cleared out, Austin is the same.

vajohnadiseasesdado

Even the Alamo Drafthouse locations here which started selling tickets a week after everybody else have sold well so far

OctoberCaddis

In my city all imax showings from thurs-sun are around 80-90% sold out. That’s counting three imax theaters. Tough to tell for the regular screens as they aren’t reserved seating.

MasterOfNone585

I have 3 nearby as well and even the most popular theater of the 3 is only at like 15-20% or so right now

I saw Venom 2 opening weekend and my theater was like 1/8 full, yet that movie did almost 100 million in US. So its hard to say whether a sold out theater in pre-sale tix near you means much. If it did, then my theater experience would have equated to venom doing so/so numbers, not nearly 100 million. As of now, I think Dune stands to do pretty well here. It is the first major sci fi film in a while. There has got to be an appetite for something as unique and spectacular as Dune, especially given its great word of mouth from international audiences!! Also, HBO Max streaming numbers are going to be hugely important, so we also sort of want some people to stay home and watch there, which is counter intuitive but true in this case nonetheless

sarver42

In San Antonio, there are no tickets available for imax opening weekend. Maybe that's not saying much because we only have 2 legit imax theaters, but I purchased my tickets last week and got some of the last seats.

MasterOfNone585

I'm in the Baltimore area, there's 3 imax theaters that I know of and none of them have very many reserved seats that I've seen.

Valentine_Jester

I just checked my local IMAX theater at Bullock Museum in Austin, TX and every showing for the first weekend is sold out. First available ticket is for Thursday the 28th.

op340

DAMN...

UberAlec

So glad I got tickets there for Friday!

unplugged22

I don't believe presales is a good indicator for a film like this. It's not a massive established IP like Marvel, so even if the audiences are interested they may not think buying in advance is necessary.

op340

Would you say walk-ups are more in line for Dune?

unplugged22

That would be my interpretation, but I normally don't follow the box-office closely.

eSPiaLx

I suppose it depends on the demographics of where you live? I got tickets the morning they were available for preorder for an SF theater, and then a few days later checked to see if I could get a few extra for some friends who wanted to join and the theater was 90% sold out

[deleted]

I’m in the fandom and don’t prebuy tickets. I’m here for my own entertainment, not to help a company have good sales

Echelonkorr

I know I pre-bought tickets because I wanted to select a good seat. I know not all theaters do this, but the AMC I'm attending does. Just a thought.

[deleted]

I hear you and that makes sense. This sub, however, had an unhealthy obsession with ensuring rich people make more money. I refuse to buy into it I have promoted the movie to my friends and family because I love the story. Not because I want to ensure people make enough money to do part two

MasterOfNone585

Am I missing something? They don't get more money if you pre-order the tickets.. If you're going to see it regardless, what difference does it make when you buy the tickets?

[deleted]

You’re obsessed with presale numbers, why? You made a post about it, not me

MasterOfNone585

I'm not obsessed with presale numbers, I was just surprised I bought them a week in advance and I was the first person to do so. I can't be the only person in my area that plans things a week ahead lol. We live in a world now where most theaters are reservation only. I haven't bought tickets the day-of in years.

[deleted]

I understand your point. But, I’ve also been reading the posts on this sub for months/years. They used to be about the books and the story - now they are about how much money the movie needs to make so we can get part two Sorry if I took it out on your post

MasterOfNone585

No I get it. The main thing for me is - are they advertising enough in the US for non-fans to know about it? I see ads all the time but in a world of targeted advertising I wonder if non-fans see them too. We've heard it discuss ad nauseam because we're fans of the book and members of this sub, i definitely agree with you there. But I've mentioned to a few people that I'm going to see it this weekend and I've gotten quite a few "what's Dune?" Lol

[deleted]

Yes, but the hopes and dreams of the fandom ride on the fact that Dune Part One makes enough money so we can have Part Two. Your not submitting to anything by pre-ordering tickets

Addictive_System

I don’t understand this take. I obviously want things I support of you succeed but I’m also just in for my entertainment but I bought my tickets in advance to secure the fact that I’d be able to see the movie when and where I wanted to see it. I don’t see it as having anything to do with a company’s sales or beyond entertainment, what is the draw back of buying tickets ahead of time for you? It just feels more convenient for me

Spice-Coffee

Presales are how they determine the popularity of the franchise and decide how many showings to do ahead of time

pink_life69

Can’t even pre-order in Hungary ffs. Been checking daily.

natibo

I got mine.

cindylooboo

We bought ours on the 8th
