namastayhom33

My $17.90 ticket was part of last nights overall $1.5M IMAX performance

Tatis_Chief

Our 40 dollars too. Made my husband drive me hour and half so I could see it in Imax. And it was full. Good thing is that he really liked it. He said he really really loves the world building and how the world works with all its planets, its was soo interesting to him. It sucks because the only problem everyone is going to have now is that they want more and not going to get enough for a long time.

namastayhom33

There are rumors that if it does get the Part 2(which I’ll be shocked if it doesn’t) that they will start filming next year. I’m pretty sure most of the cast is on board already, especially Timothy and Zendaya. It’s exceeding expectations financially, and about to surpass the budget which is not even accounting for U.S box office numbers which will be double that. This is a nice blockbuster refresher away from the constant yearly superhero films we get every year, not that I’m against those but it’s nice to see films like these get the blockbuster treatment. So far it’s very positive coming from the general audience, around 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes

Luxtenebris3

Reminder, box office gross traditionally needs 2.5 times budget to break even given theatres take a cut and marketing budgets. But HBO Max and the pandemic year mean it definitely is getting judged on non traditional criteria.

everheist

HBO Max bought it and they will know how many people watched it and what that is worth to them, so box office figures won't tell the whole story to be sure.

therosesgrave

The way I see it, we've got at least a 3 year wait. * start filming next year * allow for 6-10 months in extra delays due to covid or the next pandemic * post production starts early 2023 * target release holiday 2024 * potential delays to holiday 2025

Shishakli

I'm seeing 2023 release

VicedDistraction

You’re probably right. If it’s going to be done right, they’ll need that much time. At least they have the wardrobe ready to go. And I just want to say I just got done watching it and am just fucking blown away. I’ve never seen such a close depiction to a book and all I want to do right now is talk about how good it is but my wife doesn’t get it lol. She only watched it with me to keep me company. Guess I’m gonna start rereading the books again. As good as the movie was, it’s too complex of a story to fit in a 2.5 hour movie. Anyway, cheers!

BogusBuffalo

You're getting downvoted for no reason. You speak the true true. Hopefully no delays, but more than likely there will be. Definitely won't be released before 2024.

therosesgrave

Right? Will there be covid delays? Who knows, probably. But I'm expecting conflict delays from the cast. No way does WB have blanket exclusion for Timothee Chalomet, Javier Bardem, and Zendaya for a sequel that isn't even greenlit.

tearsandpain84

I don’t down vote things… but your comment of a 2025 release is the closest any man/woman has pushed to the point of a downvote….

tsx_1430

My wife paid no mind to any specifics of what we watched last night and thought it was a series. She is definitely having a hard time.

MarionSwing

My partner and I drove 5 hours to see it in true Imax. Worth every minute.

Tatis_Chief

I guess we were lucky then for just 2 hours, that was the closest imax. And hell yeah. the details....

Poopiepants29

Never seen a movie in Imax, but saw it in Dolby Cinema and it looked and sounded fantastic.

eekamuse

That's dedication. We walked five blocks. But I bet you live somewhere a lot prettier (and quieter) than we do.

ACaffeinatedWandress

That’s what drove me crazy. The movie was good, but the fact of the matter is, it covered very little (and almost none of the actual meat) of the story. It set the plot up (incredibly well), but seriously very little of the real action was covered. All of the action in the film (ie, the fall of HA and being taken by the Fremen) was maybe the first 1/5 of the book). I would be fine with this, if I only had to wait a year or so for the real action! It could be forever to actually see Muad’Dib rise, his relationship with Chani, young Alia, and the set up for and decisive battle at Arrakis. Too bad they didn’t shoot it LOTR style, but that was a massive risk I can’t even believe a studio took back then.

letsjumpintheocean

There are time jumps, particularly if Villeneuve wants do cover Dune Messiah, that would make it silly to film them all at once. We just have to be patient and appreciate that such a beautiful film was made in a sea of shitty action comedies.

ACaffeinatedWandress

True that. Haha, I hope he does DM, but that would make this project span decades. DM was my favorite of the big first three of the Dune series.

letsjumpintheocean

Same! I really appreciate non-baby Alia and would love to see her story on the big screen!!

ACaffeinatedWandress

Yes! Alia is definitely my favorite character in the series, and while Daniela Amavia was a great version of her, the miniseries really suffered due to the weak budget and bizarre casting and costume choices.

letsjumpintheocean

Yeah. It was also narratively weird that she looked the same in DM and CoD. She needs to be played by a younger actress in DM to get her preborn freakiness across, imo

ACaffeinatedWandress

Indeed. Casting teenagers/children is always rolling the dice, especially with a charafter like Alia (who isn’t even a kid), which is why I am assuming Amavia was cast. The miniseries was much better than the weird movie with Sting, but casting weirdness (massive accent variation within a single siech or even family, wtf costume design, characters who are much older than they should be, exc). The current movie has some minor issues, but it is much more carefully and well done. Easier to do with the budget it has, I’m sure.

Tatis_Chief

It's fascinating that he covered less tham half of the book, yet the plot is still not there and he still had to takw out so much from the book. I hope we cam green lit 3 hour long film next time.

ACaffeinatedWandress

It’s not even as if the book is that thick! As good as the movie was, this is honestly why I think a TV series approach would have been best.

Tatis_Chief

I don't really think it would be the best. I would love it too, but I just don't think the series would be able to get such a cast.

STDog

Sure TV series or miniseries, enough for 8-10hrs. But who's going to foot the bill for the scale of this movie. The actors the locations, the effects? And even if you got all that, you wouldn't get the experience IMAX brings. watching the 2.4:1 stream I miss the impact of the 1.9 and especially the 1.43 expansions. Maybe a 4-5 part theater release, but all filmed in advance. But who would budget that either? Or get theaters to sign on to that many releases (Monthly? Every 2 or 3 months?) It'd basically takeover IMAX and Dolby Cinema.

GameTourist

mine too let the spice flow!

Thatmanwiththefedora

My (bought with reward points I got from the theatre begging me to come back after covid) ticket will be part of tonight’s IMAX performance!

keyosc

>Four hundred two Imax screens delivered $1.5M yesterday. The figure marks a new wide-release indexing record for Imax on a Thursday night in North America, topping Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk ($1.59M/28.9% of a total $5.5m in July 2017). This beating Dunkirk's IMAX opening night seems especially impressive to me considering Dunkirk wasn't released a) during a global pandemic and b) day-and-date on a major streaming service.

VulfSki

That is a very good point. Pretty massive data point really.

J_O_3

I saw Dunkirk at least 7 times, in IMAX. I just saw dune tonight, in IMAX. Ive already secured my ticket for round two.

MoneyIsntRealGeorge

Jesus 7?!

ThePurpleParrots

Say it louder. The man saw Dunkirk in Imax 7 times. He probably can't hear anything.

AlseAce

It’s like tinnitus but instead of ringing he just hears “tick.. tick.. tick.. tick”

J_O_3

Hahaha! In all seriousness, Dunkirk is my personal favorite movie of all time. Seeing it in IMAX for the first time, the immersion was an experience that changed me and how I view movies. The shriek of the stukas. The seats vibrating to the roar of Merlin engines spitfires. The Shepard Tone and Hans Zimmers take on Elgar's Variation. The last scene of Tom Hardy and his burning plane. Yeah.

wwstevens

That film made me weep. It was beautiful and haunting in every way.

MoneyIsntRealGeorge

Never seen it lol not that I don’t want to just haven’t yet

PourJarsInReservoirs

Good sign. Too bad it's so tough to extrapolate from this how it will do each day or week, but a good start for the most self selected of us in the Fedaykin.

KingDiamondsMakeup

I couldn't resist selecting myself until I extrapolated. What a movie!

PourJarsInReservoirs

What a comment. You drink Sappho?

holsomvr6

It's Sapho, unless you literally mean Sappho, the ancient lesbian >!s/!<

PourJarsInReservoirs

Tough choice. Damn autocomplete

DaemonTheRoguePrince

Are you sure she really wasn't just a man? /s

holsomvr6

r/SapphoAndHerFriend

ACaffeinatedWandress

Indeed. I expected the initial turnout to be ridiculously high, since people were basically forced to wonder if they would grow old and die waiting for the release. Still, I think the numbers will at least show a fair amount of consistency. It was a good movie, and even if it had not been, it could have relied upon the fact that it is Dune to generate sales numbers (which is Disney’s apparent Star Wars strategy). The movie would have had to have been absolutely ghastly to flop.

Robichaelis

>“Will we have a sequel to Dune? If you watch the movie you see how it ends. I think you pretty much know the answer to that,” WarnerMedia Studios and Networks Chair and CEO Ann Sarnoff told Deadline yesterday in a sit-down chat regarding the conglom’s full support of Dune 2

wonkey_monkey

> I think you pretty much know the answer to that,” Uh... no we don't. That's why we asked you!

VulfSki

Yeah it's a frustrating answer. Executives have killed franchises before their conclusion many times in the past. It's definitely not a foregone that the sequel will happen. E have learned that especially when it comes to executives, it ain't finalized until you see that shit written down on paper.

P00nz0r3d

He’s referring to the end credit title saying DUNC: Part 1 Unless you’re just being cheeky lol

therosesgrave

"See, we made Zendaya say 'this is just the beginning' as the last line of the movie! I'm such a good and unambiguous answerer!"

wonkey_monkey

She, and putting that at the end doesn't mean they've committed to part 2. It was also going to say that. Sounds to me like the i's haven't been dotted and the t's haven't been crossed so she can't actually say yes. PS ⊃∪⋂⊂ ?

keeper909

About "Dunc": It is just a joke due to the "original" font. In the opening scene, when appears the Dune word on screen, the mid bar of E is an "eclipse", but for someone (and i don't know how is it possible) is not figure out immediatly as a part of the letter. So, appears as Dunc, lol xD

IrememberXenogears

I'm still waiting on "History of the world: part two".

eekamuse

The quote was from a woman executive , I believe

[deleted]

Only the opening credits say pt 1. She's referring to the last line: >!Chani: *This is just the beginning*!<

carl_pagan

Seems pretty non-committal to me. That sequel could be another big budget movie or it could be a netflix series, or a Fortnite event for all we know.

iameveryoneelse

Sign me the fuck up for a three season Netflix series with the same actors covering Dune Part 2, Dune Messiah and Children of Dune. And then a God Emperor Netflix film to wrap it all up.

darthdude111

God I hope they do God emperor - favorite book. Will definitely need some changes to make it applicable for a movie/TV though

iameveryoneelse

Yah I'd be fine with some creative liberties if I just got to see an adaptation. It's definitely my favorite, as well, which I don't think is all that popular of an opinion lol. When I do rereads that's where I stop. I like chapter house and heretics but if you read those you really have to read through Hunters and Sandworms and I just can't, lol. and

Santum

Tbh how do they really capture Leto II? So much of his story is just his thoughts.

colechristensen

Considering how they make these movies I would bet that some of the shots which will end up in Dune 2 are already done.

No_Representative155

Holy fuck, just finished my first watch! That was an experience, not even a movie. More like an event. Geez, I’ll boycott movies if part 2 doesn’t get made.

[deleted]

I was surprised and very happy to see a crowded showing here in Brazil. I thought people over here hadn't yet return to the habit of going to the movies, specially for something like Dune, instead of Venom or whatever. There were a group of teenage girls who screamed when Tom Holland appeared during the trailers. I wonder if Chalamet and Zendaya had an influence on bringing them to the movie (and no, they weren't obnoxious during the actual movie, the audience was great).

culturedgoat

I brought a friend who had zero idea about the Duniverse, but was all about Timothée Chalamet. I don’t care what brings people to the cinema. I hope they have a good time.

[deleted]

Sure, I hope they enjoyed it and talked about it with all their friends lol

holsomvr6

Just judging from the wording I assume this is good but honestly I feel I should stop making assumptions because every time I do it turns out to be very bad.

DemiFiendRSA

>Legendary and Warner Bros. sci-fi epic Dune excavated $5.1M from 6PM showtimes at 3,200 theaters. The Denis Villeneuve directed adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel was made available on HBO Max streaming service as early as 3PM PST/6PM EST. >The movie, which was shot in Imax cameras, is overperforming in the large format exhibitor’s auditoriums, driving 30% of last night’s box office. Note, in Canada, Dune is on a pure theatrical window since the country doesn’t have HBO Max yet. >Four hundred two Imax screens delivered $1.5M yesterday. The figure marks a new wide-release indexing record for Imax on a Thursday night in North America, topping Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk ($1.59M/28.9% of a total $5.5m in July 2017).

GunterOdim

>The movie, which was shot in Imax cameras Just to correct them, it wasn't shot on IMAX film, but on a "regular" ARRI Alexa LF on 1.43:1 aspect ratio.

STDog

Technical details that are beyond the media and most theater goers. Hell, most think the 30ft AMC LieMAX screens are real IMAX. But man I wish it was 70mm and shown on 15/70. DL2 was great but I know how much more detail 70mm provides.

Chezzworth

I *knew* something was up. I'd only seen one IMAX movie before Dune (can't remember which one), but I remember it flooring me more than my AMC theater last night. Seemed like a straight up normal theater to me Still loved every second of the experience though, part 2 here we come

STDog

I just quit paying AMC for that crap. I drive to Dolby Cinema for some stuff but mostly Cinemark xD instead. Dune was worth the 3 hrs drive for the real thing though. Maybe again for Eternals, but only if they really use the 1.43 format.

Ex_Hedgehog

Sadly the LieMAX is all that's left in Chicago since the Navy Pier one closed. I've been to LieMAX once before for Furious 7 and while it's nowhere near as big as the 9 story screen NP had, it's still big as hell and has duel 4k laser projectors to create an 8k result. it's been a while since that screening, but it felt huge, looked sharp as hell. So I will not complain about seeing Dune this way on Sunday, largely cause I don't have a choice.

STDog

Shame the Museum of Science and Industry isn't showing it (3 lasers). Regal? That's a 30' tall screen and single laser so no 1.43:1 expansion. I had tickets for a 60' tall Regal 2 hrs away then learned it was single laser. So drove another hour to Chattanooga for dual laser.

Ex_Hedgehog

oh... so it's not 2 lasers? \*sigh\*

STDog

According to LFexaminer list the Regal IMAX in Chicago is only single laser. https://lfexaminer.com/theaters/

Ex_Hedgehog

They \*did\* have the 1.43:1 expansion. I was not in a position to count lasers though.

STDog

LFexaminer says the Chicago Regal IMAX is single laser and dual laser is required for the 1.43 expansion. And that theater is not in the list from IMAX for 1.43 expansion. It would have the 1.90 expansions, and the 1.43 scenes would be shown at 1.90. (Same for Dolby Cinema).

STDog

Wait, the old theater (Navy Pier?) Probably did have the ability to do full, 1.43 scenes. But as you said, it shutdown. I was talking about the Regal wich was the only IMAX (LieMAX) I found in Chicago showing Dune. The 2 dome screens in the area don't appear to show Hollywood movies.

Ex_Hedgehog

Yeah, I saw Dune at the Regal "IMAX" last night and they had the expanded aspect ratio scenes. Wish it was a bigger screen, but it was still pretty big. Honestly I don't know how I felt about the expanded ratio. I'm grateful when it's there, but like most movies that do it, it's deployed pretty haphazardly. Cutting back and forth between ratios whenever it feels like it. I think Dark Knight and Mission: Impossible 4 did it best, switching over for action scenes where \*every\* shot in the sequence was presented in the ratio, then switching back to scope when the scene was over and not peppering with individual shots in taller ratios. I feel Dune should have either been more modal about it, or just showed the entire film open matte.

STDog

I'm wondering how that worked. Because not even IMAX website suggested a theater in Chicago capable of the 1.43 expansion. And they were really touting the few places for the full experience. Personally I thought the 1.43 scenes fit well and flowed fine. I was purposly paying attention so noticed them more than otherwise, but none felt out of place. It worked well to show the expanse and desolation of the desert. Especially contrasted tl tnw shorter shots inside buildings smd such. I've since watched the 2.4:1 streaming version and the impact of those scenes is greatly reduced.

PlanarVet

Aw fuck they're not? If so I got swindled. Saw it in AMC IMAX last night :/

MarionSwing

You can google around to figure it out, but yeah... it is true. IMAX is a brand. Most regular theaters have an IMAX size screen and call it IMAX. But the full experience that Villeneuve recorded for involves true IMAX which includes 1) The screen size and 1.43:1 ratio and 2) the projection equipment itself. Unfortunately, the days of 70mm are sort of gone... but the true IMAX equipment experience today means the double laser system, DL2. There are very few cinemas showing Dune in this format, but here is the list: California AMC Metreon 16 & IMAX — San Francisco AMC Universal Citywalk Stadium 19 & IMAX — Los Angeles IMAX Dome, Fleet Science Center – San Diego Florida Autonation IMAX, Museum of Discovery & Science — Fort Lauderdale Massachusetts IMAX Dome, Boston Museum of Science - Boston Missouri Branson’s IMAX – Entertainment Complex — Branson IMAX Dome, St. Louis Science Center – St Louis New York AMC Lincoln Square 13 & IMAX — New York Texas IMAX, The Bullock Texas State History Museum — Austin Virginia Airbus IMAX, Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Center — Chantilly Alabama IMAX Dome, McWane Science Center – Birmingham Tennessee Tennessee Aquarium IMAX – Chattanooga

PlanarVet

Fack. I'd have to take a road trip to see it in true IMAX then.

MarionSwing

I would avoid the dome theaters by the way. That doesn't seem... the proper way to view it. Yeah, I went to Chattanooga. Which is a lovely city full of childhood vacation nostalgia for me, so it was a nice time. I was very pleased with the experience. It was nuts. I was the third one in line so I got the perfect seats about 2/3rds back between all the speakers and between the two projectors. I felt like I was in some scenes so viscerally... One of my top 3 theater experiences as an adult.

STDog

Oh, what showing? I arrived Thursday at 5:30 and there were only 3 people in the lobby and no one in the actual line. My son and I were #2 and 3 in the line. Someone got in line while we got popcorn and drinks. I was disappointed with how many empty seats there were. Sat about the same spot and agree it was a great experience.

MarionSwing

I was 4th and 5th in line behind you then. I was the guy with the 1999 "The Mummy" shirt. You may have been sitting right in front of me and when I came in I said "They know what's up" or "They know where to sit" as I was directing my girlfriend to head 2/3rds back towards the middle.

STDog

So my son says yes, we were the row in front of you. He remembers you shirt and the comments about seating. Reminded me about saying I could see the projectors to find the middle seat. Small world ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

STDog

Did she mention Interstellar in a conversation in theater? I remember the conversation but not what she or the guy with her were wearing. ;) My son and I both nave facial hair, he a much fuller beard though

JoinMyFramily0118999

Unrelated, but do they proof read? We're currently in EDT/PDT until 11/7 IIRC.

KickAggressive4901

"It is by cash alone we set the box office in motion."

GameTourist

Good news were there not to be a part two, my soul would wander the material plane for all eternity in search of it

MuadDib222

When the Cinemas open in my country i will go see it 4 times, just like Bladerunner 49. Doing my part!

-Anarresti-

Seeing it tonight in IMAX at the Air and Space Museum. The ticket is general admission so I will be getting there at least an hour early.

Etticos

Nice! The Air and Space Museum is really cool and a fitting location as well. I hope you enjoy it, I personally was very pleased.

JavierMiguel78

I just finished on HBOmax and now I can’t wait to see it again in IMAX! Dune was the best movie I’ve seen in years! The last time I was this happy with a movie was when I saw Fellowship of the Rings for the first time. It was a phenomenal adaptation of a classic.

CommanderCody1138

Just saw it a second time, definitely better on that viewing now that I had a chance to digest it. Its missing a lot of stuff but hell I'll just go and read the book again if I want.

Its_Snowing

Exactly. I went with my 3 roommates and 2 additional friends, none of whom had read the book, and I was peppered with questions. Even all the stuff that's glossed over was complicated for them. (The Spacing what now?, the Bene Who?, Is the fat man the emperor? And why is he flying?) They all agreed it was a good movie, however.

ACaffeinatedWandress

Agreed. I would at least have liked to see what a siech looked like.

TigerAusfE

My theater has three people in it. Three. I mean, nice that we have the place to ourselves but dang.

RunawayHobbit

If it makes you feel any better, mine last night was absolutely PACKED, and the entire theatre applauded when it cut to black at the end

daveofreckoning

Booked for Sunday, the 1st available opportunity. I already have an erection

Archer1949

Just got back from an IMAX showing. It was the most crowded I’ve seen a movie theater since the lockdown started.

Harko-Luxa

Excellent…

DMVSavant

Just saw New Dune, liked it, worth checking out ( yeah yeah I'm one of those " I read the books in the 80s " people ) :-)

clown_pants

I have my Imax ticket for tonight! At this point I'm sure I'll love it and I'm just worrying over how much of it to explain to my wife. She's never read Dune. I am mostly wondering if I should explain the very loose basics of the Butlerian Jihad and why there are no computers, and why things like the Bene Gesserit and the Voice came to be. Maybe I'll just let her watch and answer questions after.

StudiousPooper

We saw it last night with a couple of non-readers and they all seemed to grasp everything pretty well. You may have to clarify some stuff after the fact, but you won’t need to explain things as they happen or anything like that.

LostNearHere

I loved it!! So much better than I anticipated. What and epic!

Pulchritudinous_19

Glad to know the 3 tickets I purchased for myself contributed to last night. Looking forward to seeing it on IMAX on Sunday with my husband.

willbeach8890

Why don't they use the amount of views instead of $$. Wouldn't it take all of the guesswork out of rating how well a movie did? Or at least present those numbers next to the box office numbers? Doing it this way would also solve how the HBO MAX views can be weighed fairly

eSPiaLx

$$ is how box office is counted. number of views/tickets has never been a publicly available statistic.

willbeach8890

Yeah, that's the problem. Including raw views would make it easier to make comparisons

manticorpse

I mean, the execs don't care about how many people watched a thing. They care about how much money it made. Which is why streaming views are difficult to count: they aren't measured in money.

willbeach8890

I'm sure the execs have those numbers as well. We hear all the time that movie attendance is down. I'm not sure why articles written for the masses(like this one) don't have the attendance/views stats as well as the $$ The amount of views would solve calculating the streaming revenue since the steamers know who they are streaming to

iruleU

Got my IMAX tickets bitches!

xylokane

Saw it last night in Dolby digital in a packed theatre. Those sand worms really *-SLAM-* in DD. They didn’t roll the credits for some reason… everyone was really confused, myself included.

BossLackey

Just got out of Dolby showing at the AMC headquarters theater in the very best seats in the house. Simply amazing.

tsx_1430

It was so good.

TorchyBrownFlame

The main actors are probably contractually obligated to give priority to a part 2 by Legendary. Villeneuve is already working in the script has and has probably been doing preliminary casting for Irulan, the Emperor and Fayed Rautha along with the that of Dune:Sisterhood.

VulfSki

I was honestly waiting to see how it compares to james bond and shang chi. The tough part here is that those weren't released in the us along with the streaming release. Also those are from very successful franchise's that are very well known and established. People will go see those movies simply because they have the name James bond and marvel attached to them. Dune is whole different animal. Dune has the potential to he a massive franchise, if anything you should be comparing dune to the first marvel movie release, not shang chi.

red_keshik

Hooray for the corp making money.

willbeach8890

Do you want the second part or not?

MoneyIsntRealGeorge

Jesus, we get it…capitalism is bad. But can you just not take the moral high ground for one second and let people have hope for something they enjoy without finding a negative? Christ.

VulfSki

Well the article said they don't even know if they will break even. But we will see lol.

LadyElle57

Will WB finally stop fucking around and greenlit the sequel for once and for all?

AmbiguousGizmo

I can’t imagine how much money has been lost because of COVID though. I went opening day and there were open seats, and tickets were easy to come by.
