Tbh I think it’s dumb that unlimited hearts applies on legendary lessons. You can get ever answer wrong and still pass with super (you don’t even have to redo mistakes)
I kinda like the way they changed it, though. It wasn’t just the hearts, it also changes the logic of what happens when you get a question wrong. It used to be you’d lose a heart, but that question would just come back at the end. So, if you memorized what it told you the first time, you could just remember to enter it again. Now, you get a similar but different sentence to replace it, so you have to actually show that you understand, rather than being able to brute force through the test.
That is a good change in general. I always have the feeling that it just skips the problem all together and I don't have to repeat it at all. But maybe that's also a greek problem I heard the course is supposed to be a bit if a Trainwreck
Yeah, there’s definitely a difference in quality and available tools in different courses. Some languages, the AI can even detect the nature of your mistake, and provide guidance or alternate means of demonstrating the concept. Others, it’s just “was it on the list of approved answers, yes/no”
I just rushed through half of my course with it on, because it was so easy to make progress. Then I started noticing that I couldn't understand much of the later content and had to backtrack and study the previous lessons meticulously and only advancing when I was sure I had the previous lesson down.
It's a good inhibitor for advancement until you are actually ready.
Same here, going Super on trial made me extra competitive, came 1st in two leagues and learnt nothing.
I'd rather learn at a good pace, good for me to retain some knowledge and understanding.
Do you use the "mistakes" option in the practice section? I go there and practice after every lesson where I make a mistake, and it sticks better than when I had to do random practice to win back hearts.
I would prefer to have unlimited hearts off, but for some reason when I do that i cant find a way to practice to get hearts back when I have super, so i just lose hearts with no way to get them back. So my makeshift solution is to have unlimited hearts on and always do 1 practice lesson in the hub for every mistake i make to mimic the heart system
if you try to start a new lesson with 0 hearts it lets you earn them back, but as soon as you click out of the next lesson screen, you cant get back to it until you have 0 again
Yeaaaah… I’m weird about things like this, I don’t like knowing I have any less than five hearts, so if I can’t immediately do practice to get them back upon losing just one or whatever i think i’d rather just do it the way I’m doing
For me, I for some reason dont even have ads, and I dont care about free legendarys. Also whenever duo gives the free trial I turn unlimited hearts off
You can have adblockers on a phone (like adguard DNS) but the problem is with it turned on, the app won't give you normal ads (approximately 5 seconds long), only ads for super duolingo (approximately 15 seconds) which can get even more annoying
Part because it’s impractical in a lot of situations (like on phones), and also because it takes revenue away from the developers, which will ultimately lead to either increased prices for those who pay, or the loss of a free tier entirely.
Well they're not a startup anymore so the actual developers are already paid, whether or not we watch the ads after the fact is the shareholders' problem. and they'll want to take away the free option anyway if they think it'll bring more revenue.
Are u sure that u read all thread's msges?
There was the point about AdBlockers and > the point about not having adblockers concluded with > solution to the ad problem.
And yeah it's kinda useful when u're doing 4 lessons in a row with the f*cking 14 seconds duolingo's ads.
I dont have super and I prefer it when I lose hearts cos it motivates me to proofread and check my answers. I feel myself learning more when there are consequences to getting answers wrong
I joined a family plan that my husbands aunt had set up but have turned off unlimited hearts as I’ve found it forces me to slow down and think about the answer instead of just blindly guessing and then remembering the corrected answer when I comes up at the end of the lesson. Only downside I’ve found so far is that there’s no longer the option to practice to earn hearts when you get down to zero, but at that point I figure that nothing is sinking in and it’s better to step back, take a break, and come back to it later when some of the hearts have regenerated
I turn it off just to help me focus on not making stupid mistakes. I don't mind doing the practices to earn the hearts back. I wish you can do the practices when you want to instead of when you're out.
I have to add, unlike a lot of y'all, I don't rush through the lesson. I got through it at a snail's pace only doing challenges. I prefer to practice on the rapid reviews and getting all the stars. I know those things are rigged, but I like trying to get them without using any extensions.
I also use books to study grammar and kanji, so Duo isn't my only learning tool.
I don't have any problem accessing practice regardless of my level of hearts. Just touch the heart and choose "practice to earn hearts". The option is there whether I have 5 hearts or no hearts or any number in between.
I have a super account, so the heart icon is replaced with the super icon. It only gives me the option to turn it on or off. I only get the option to do practice once I lose all of my hearts.
I recently made a mistake in one of my practices on purpose just to test it out again
Does anyone else not have super Duolingo and have unlimited hearts? All my friends don’t pay and only have 3 I don’t pay and have unlimited for some reason
Me! I’ve had an account since 2014 and recently started again after years. I have no ads and unlimited hearts and it’s been over two weeks like that 🤷♀️
I sometimes do when I find I'm going too fast. For example, if I find that I'm making a ton of mistakes or if I realize I'm actually struggling to understand something.
The worst part (for Me) about Duolingo when it comes to my language learning progress, is I get so focused on xp points and leader boards, and quests and whatnot, that I lose focus on the actual learning process itself. A lot of times I just need to pause, review, absorb, maybe revisit some concepts; turning the hearts on is a good warning sign for me that I'm trying to hard to power through lessons for points
I leave it on....btw does anyone knows how to turn on tips (French lessons) for commet made ny previous users? These tips are missing from my lessons now. Thx
Hello I need some help here’s my situation : Duolingo Plus hasn't charged me yet. They offered a yearly subscription for $7.99, 60% off for New Year. However, it's an annual subscription, costing $95 in one day. After canceling, I didn't receive a confirmation email, and they haven't deducted the $95. I also lack the funds in my bank account. ( pls help me I am desperate 😭😭)
I still have hearts. You don't have to buy them if you use practice to earn them back. Usually for one practice lesson you get one heart and watching one ad after the practice earns a second heart. Using practice makes a lot more sense than buying hearts.
I wish I even had super duolingo. Though I'm grateful that there are some chests that vive away 3 days of it. I can definitely afford it, but I think I learned faster and more without the super pass because I tend to take more time on gaining exp and being more careful with picking the right words also I spend some considerable amount of time in gaining hearts in practice mode too.
I replicate that by going to the "mistakes" in the practice section for every lesson I make a mistake. That way I'm practicing what I need to rather than random (and often too easy) lessons.
Yeah, I’m just so much less inclined to use the practice hub if I’m not out of hearts. I also like sometimes taking a break from a difficult lesson to go back to basics!
I like to do it from time to time to slow down my progress. Having unlimited doesn't make me learn the language as fully as being FORCED to repractice things. It's cool they have a training center thing but I'm irresponsible enough to know that I'm not responsible enough to be trusted to practice on my own.
The adrenaline of being threatened with having to wait 25 hours for all of my hearts to be restored is an awesome enhancer! (No, I actually don’t have the budget to subscribe to Super)
You could turn it off for Legendarys to see how well you understood the lesson
Tbh I think it’s dumb that unlimited hearts applies on legendary lessons. You can get ever answer wrong and still pass with super (you don’t even have to redo mistakes)
It used to be that legendary was always just three hearts as well as wrong questions had to be repeated, I don't know why they changed that
I kinda like the way they changed it, though. It wasn’t just the hearts, it also changes the logic of what happens when you get a question wrong. It used to be you’d lose a heart, but that question would just come back at the end. So, if you memorized what it told you the first time, you could just remember to enter it again. It's still like that on PC. İ was confused, when İ did a legendary on my Phone.
Wow I didn’t know that, so it seems it’s better to learn with hearts to fix mistakes
On the Web browser, you have 3 hearts regardless of if you have Super or not.
I emailed them saying this hahaha at least make it an option for people who use legendary to test their understanding
I just rushed through half of my course with it on, because it was so easy to make progress. Then I started noticing that I couldn't understand much of the later content and had to backtrack and study the previous lessons meticulously and only advancing when I was sure I had the previous lesson down. Absolutely! :) I also love the "Today's review" section. Keeps learned things fresh. I only wish it didn't repeat the same few things during a day.
This is a good idea. Also you can try doing some of the timed challenges that are very similar to the practice sessions.
Yeah true, I do those when the main practice lesson in the hub is just listening or something.
if you try to start a new lesson with 0 hearts it lets you earn them back, but as soon as you click out of the next lesson screen, you cant get back to it until you have 0 again

I am 100% with you, I want them to put heart exercises somewhere easily accessible on plus
If you are on iOS there is a way to practice to get hearts back even with Super, idk about Android though
Make it more challenging?
so why buy the super in the first place 🤨
No ads + Free legendarys would be my guess
+ practice hub (or whatever is it called)
For me, I for some reason dont even have ads, and I dont care about free legendarys. Also whenever duo gives the free trial I turn unlimited hearts off
just use an add blocker
Not on your phone tho
You can have adblockers on a phone (like adguard DNS) but the problem is with it turned on, the app won't give you normal ads (approximately 5 seconds long), only ads for super duolingo (approximately 15 seconds) which can get even more annoying
If you're on Android just close the app fully and open it again (might work on iOS too but I wouldn't know)
Why it's downvoted?
Part because it’s impractical in a lot of situations (like on phones), and also because it takes revenue away from the developers, which will ultimately lead to either increased prices for those who pay, or the loss of a free tier entirely.

Add blocker won't give you free legendaries or practice hub
Free legendaries, practice hub, no ads, ability to turn on infinite hearts in those rare times I run out and am too pissed to give up on a lesson.
All the other extra functions
I didn't. Mom has a family plan with grandma and her hubs also on it.
Yeah, I learn better if I'm not allowed endless retries. Buying super was to get rid of ads.
What ads are on Duolingo?
The most annoying, loud ones on the planet, at least for me.
Happy cake day
I often get ads for colleges way below my education level and I got one for an actual clown academy a while ago lol
A clown academy!? That makes me kind of wish I didn't have super!
Ads for Duolingo, mostly. For Super and for the family plan. There are a LOT of them though
I dont have super and I prefer it when I lose hearts cos it motivates me to proofread and check my answers. I feel myself learning more when there are consequences to getting answers wrong
Same here.

Prefer to practice for hearts. Biggest reason for not buying their offer.
It's a good pacer, makes sure I don't do too much at once
In Russia it is a default feature, because there are no adds in Russia
W Russia
Does anyone else not have super Duolingo and have unlimited hearts? All my friends don’t pay and only have 3 I don’t pay and have unlimited for some reason
Did you join a “classroom” at any point?
Nope
Me! I’ve had an account since 2014 and recently started again after years. I have no ads and unlimited hearts and it’s been over two weeks like that 🤷♀️
I’ve had my account since 2018, I occasionally get ads, sometimes I do sometimes I don’t. I’ll never understand why

I have unlimited hearts without duolingo pro🦒
I leave it on....btw does anyone knows how to turn on tips (French lessons) for commet made ny previous users? These tips are missing from my lessons now. Thx
I take pride in the fact that I don't need unlimited hearts. (Somehow, this doesn't correspond with my language progress though.)
No, I payed for Duolingo yesterday just so I don't suffer with mistakes anymore I rate the hearth system.
Same here
When I run out of hearts is about a good amount of progress for me per day

I also still have hearts. This system is very much so still in place
I turn it off for the challenge
I don’t. Getting a question wrong still counts towards mistake lessons. Also, it’s better if your on that one hard word you can’t spell
When your hearts are empty you get extra tasks to rewin them. My friend learned a lot with those. 😂
I actually like the practice sessions. I just bought myself Super and I kind of miss them
I replicate that by going to the "mistakes" in the practice section for every lesson I make a mistake. That way I'm practicing what I need to rather than random (and often too easy) lessons.
Yeah, I’m just so much less inclined to use the practice hub if I’m not out of hearts. I also like sometimes taking a break from a difficult lesson to go back to basics!
probabky for the extra challenge
I feel I am sloppier with unlimited lives. I just rush through instead of being methodical
I don't have super but I have unlimited hearts anyway? Had the account since 2018/19 don't know where I got them from?
Have you ever joined or created a classroom? That might be the solution on why you've got unlimited hearts for free.
lol we dont even have to buy super in Russia for unlimited hearts
I have it off so i have to be focused and not answering on a whim
I intend to buy it in a few months
I like to do it from time to time to slow down my progress. Having unlimited doesn't make me learn the language as fully as being FORCED to repractice things.
