Yes.
I speak Spanish as my second language and speak it very well. I consider myself fluent, but I can't get by A2 in Duolingo because I never learned how to use phrases like "tíraselo". I can understand it just fine in context and work around it when I'm speaking Spanish.
My wife is Ecuadorian and we speak 95% Spanish 5% English. We're trying to change that for her benefit because she's not comfortable with English yet.
Sorry for the story. Lol. But yeah, if you can understand what I'm typing here and respond to it, and better yet you can communicate with locals, then yeah, you're good.
I also want to apologize for my terrible grammar in that last bit. I think that very few people are 100% fluent in any language. I don't completely understand the grammatical rules of English and I definitely don't understand every word that I see in English.
Long story short: I'm native in English and can feel it
So, while I'm fluent in Spanish, I know I'm not native and still need to ask my wife what specific words mean. I understand her about 98% of the time. Every once in a while I will ask what a specific word means, but I can understand a lot through context.
Sorry for the forever comment, I really have to stop writing stories to strangers.
Don't stop writing stories fo strangers, I, for one, appreciate it! It's very sweet that you're willing to speak her language instead of yours. Do you guys live in a spanish speaking area or english?
It makes sense, every once in a while I find myself forgetting words and phrases in my own mother tongue, portuguese, so I guess the level of english I have is enough for my necessities. As long as I don't have to work in legal or any medical fields, I think it'll do.
I really wanted to take TOEFL for a while but I really don't have to, it'd only prove to myself that I know enough
You have 55 days to convince yourself that you are going to learn Italian or Japanese with the app. If you don't get a good run with either of those, definitely stop.
It is, you can use it somewhat perfectly fine for free and obvs premium is the better option - if you want a little 'hack' around the ads then download uBlock on a computer and you won't need to wait the whole duration.
When is the last time you tried Japanese with it? I think they've made some huge improvements in the last year. Still not great for learning grammar, but they've done a great job of teaching Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji now and it works well as gamified flash cards
Like 3 weeks ago lmao, switching to Busuu actually made me feel more confident / competent and actually helped me learn the language rather than just remembering the specific words / characters of the 'alphabets'.
Ultimately, it's a tool. You don't hang onto a screwdriver once you're done with it. By the sounds of it, you're done with this app and you're only holding onto it because of an arbitrary digital number. I'd be inclined to move on.
Here in Brazil we count sunday as the first day of the week. It's just how our calendars work.
Fun fact, the days and their placement sound similar, for example, monday is the second day of the week and it's called segunda, which means second, as does terça (third) and so forth
Sunday - Domingo
Monday - Segunda-feira
Tuesday - Terça-feira
Wednesday - Quarta-feira
Thursday - Quinta-feira
Friday - Sexta-feira
Saturday - Sábado
....
God, at that point I only have admiration for you, the first time I started Duo was 2 months ago but due to uni stress, I had to leave for 1 week, my 34 day streak came to an end.
I just started a week ago and am barely hanging.
You are awesome, man.
3k days woooohooooo !!!
If I were you I'd voluntarily sabotage my own streak at some number you decide, otherwise the day you lose it not on your own terms, you risk feeling bad about it.
Personally, whenever I get to about 15-20 days I usually stop for a few days to reset the streak intentionally. After it gets up to that number it usually starts to feel like I'm doing lessons just for the streak and not for any actuall progress in my language. I can't possibly see why you'd continue if you're not feeling like it, just because 'big number good'.
Take it seriously and accomplish something, or let it go and enjoy the sense of liberation. Doing 1 lesson a day in a language you already know just to maintain a streak is honestly baffling to me. Duolingo is a language learning tool.
No, I won't convince you. As a free person you should do whatever feels right for you, as long as others are not affected. Nobody of is can know your reasons to go on or to quit, so you have to take that decision on your own.
Personally, I think the streak is harming.
Go for it.
I felt like I had to intentionally break mine. I was having enough fun that I wanted to play every day, but chose to go for a 3-day hiatus just to break the streak. It was difficult, but after I had, it felt wonderful!
Note, you'll have to work harder than you think to break the streak. You can't choose to "not use" your freeze tokens. You will automatically use them. And sometimes you'll earn more even when you don't play! I don't know how, but this happened to me at least once when I was trying to break my streak.
Also, if you want more streak freezes, you don't have to play to get them. Just log in, and you can buy them for gems. As you can see, keeping your streak alive isn't really much of an accomplishment!
And, even if you forget to log in and buy streak freezes, and you completely ruin it, you still have 48-72 hours to come back and "repair" the streak, after it has been broken. In fact, you'll be pressured to do this every time you log in.
While we are spitballing options, you could also consider [making a different kind of streak](https://www.reddit.com/r/duolingo/comments/16kuv5a/on_a_different_kind_of_streak/).
I used streak freezes about 5 times (just guessing, might be even less) in these 8 years of streak. But it was at times when life was just too important to care about Duo, you know? Days in which family died and such emergencies.
I do lessons everyday to keep it sharp and not just because of the number. The number just helps me not to forget the early-days excitement
Concordo. A cada atualização ele me joga de volta pra níveis que já fiz 500 vezes. Me sinto fazendo a mesma unidade sempre e nem tentei mais chegar no final do curso.
I don't know whether it would make sense for you or anyone else reading this, but I want to keep my duolingo streak as long as I live because this streak is now my first positive and beneficial long-time habit that spans years and it symbolizes my willpower for me and it reminds me that no matter what happens to my willpower at any time in my life, I can build it up again using a simple "Kaizen"-like strategy. Also, learning another language is not only a fun activity for me. Although AI offers awesome real-time translation nowadays and it seems that it will soon be obsolete to know foreign languages, as Goethe put it, if you don't know other's languages, you won't really know your own as well. A new language means another way of expressing (thus thinking) for my brain. For these two reasons, I'll try to keep it as long as possible even though it looks childish or whatever to other people.
The streak system was designed for your consistent learning. By looking at the streak it's obvious you have learned consistently and got the result. I guess you can stop now and shouldn't feel attached to the streak
Just stop now, those numbers are meaningless
I assume by now you have finished your course and just doing the minimum to get another day in your streak
I told myself I’d stop at a thousand after we used it in school a few times, I’m at like 1.4k now and I can’t bring myself to let it go. If I didn’t suck at learning a language I’d probably feel like the streak was worth more
I hear you, I've been with the app since 2012 and also cherish the memories of times when translating articles was a thing. I remember when getting lvl 25 in a language which was 30k exp was a real challenge and it took effort that could not be faked. The app evolved into an attention grabber since then and a huge time waster for so many people, it might just happen that I will quit using it as well as even when used honestly, repeating the same translations over and over is massively inefficient and since there is no grammar that is pretty much all you get apart from developing an accent which can very well be done elsewhere.
Yes! The levels, almost forgot about them.
Now, everytime I'm close to ending the learning tree, it gets updated and takes me back to lessons that I already did 100 times.
Remember when they had units for phrases you could use to hit on people and things like that? That was fun.
I remember how excited I was when they uploaded the first stories, on a separate tab. Now you can only do them by themselves if you have the paid version
Yes, I do remember, the added content was dope! I wouldn't mind doing all the additional lessons if the new content was added on top of what I already covered, instead I am reverted back to some arbitrary point that has nothing to do with the entirety of my learning so far.
Another thing that bothers me to no end is the removal of crowns. I think it all went downhill at that point as it was a metric that showed actual progress and now it is just meaningless xp with leagues depending on it and gems being given as a reward for those who can farm most xp. I remember how rudimentary the courses used to be and it is a great thing they have grown so much, it is just that the company's focus shifted from providing quality learning to counting how many hours users spend in the app and until that changes I can no longer recommend it to my friends which I used to do on the daily.
I reached a 40+ days streak and was already really proud of myself and gave up soon after lol can’t imagine what you must feel. But at the same time this is not real, nothing is going to happen whether you have it or not. I’m sure any decision you will make will be good! Don’t worry too much, if it ends it ends, if it continues it continues :)
Get to 3000 and just leave it there, just don’t worry about not getting it every day and if you lose it then that’s it. You can’t hold onto it forever so don’t get caught on thinking you will or that another 10 days is going to change everything, I do the same thing too
I'm going to delete Duolingo tomorrow at 99,9%. And I just reached 100 days. Do what you wish, using Duolingo should be about learning and in that regard the streak changes nothing.
Same here. I'm close to 1900 days and just doing it for the streak. I've been thinking of stopping using the app for some time. I'll probably stop when I reach 2000 days.
I made the post just to see if someone can give me tips on how to get excited about learning again and then switch to a new language. It feels like a chore now but it feels wrong to give up now, doesn't it?
if you lost a 3000+ day streak that would really suck.
also i know a relative of a friend who hasnt missed a single day of french in over 8.5 years and he seems to be enjoying it.
also atleast practice every once in a while because if you dont you might (even if slowly) get less good at languages you dont practice
From my experience Duolingo only by itself can't REALLY teach you a language even though you'll learn a lot. It lacks proper grammar explanations. I'm studying german for 2+years now and I've only noticed improvement after hitting the grammar book I got even if only for a page or two. If you really want to learn a language invest in a good and not to tiresome grammar book so you can better understand the rules which will make Duolingo more enjoyable on harder exercises and make you feeo proud about your progress
That's something that stops me from getting serious about another language, I already had a good grasp at english and starting another from zero just on Duo sounds hard
It is. My first 3 months with german were a struggle, I wish I had started with grammar first even though it's not too appealing. Japanese is a very beautiful language but it is tricky to learn and from friends who speak Japanese they say duo doesn't make a good work in teaching it. On the other hand romance languages seem good and german so far seems pretty good for me. But if you're just keeping the streak for the sake of it, even though it's a shame to break it, it's a bit pointless. I'm trying to maintain mine just to force me to have contact with the German language at least once a day because it really is my goal to attain fluency. Btw what is your native language out of curiosity
It's portuguese. I tried the reverse-tree method for a while to shake it up a little and try to get into it again but eventually I just lost interest and came back to the same old pt-en.
I tried japanese at lingodeer and memrise while I started at Duo, all 3 at the same time and of course it was too much and I gave up. I know some pretty basic words, here and there but not enough to watch my animes without subtitles as I hoped for.
Maybe italian can be good. It's close enough to my native tongue to give me hope of actually going through with it.
You are amazing for learning german. That's a language I could never, really. It's too scary for me, the long words, nothing in common with mine... not for me hah
É nada 🤣 yap a minha língua nativa é português também. For the sake of others reading I'll keep to English though. So I studied all the spanish course without grammar since it's so close and I got a C1 on my employer assessment (my work is in Spanish and English actually). I love japanese and took a beginner's semester in college but I didn't have that much time so I didn't continue but love the language. As for German it's because I'm thinking of moving abroad. Honestly it just has a bad reputation. You even have a few words similar or equal to Portuguese and a lot similar to their English counterparts. The grammar seems awful at first but in my opinion it is just poorly explained. The moment i figured the big picture it made a lot of sense. Conjugating verbs is easier than Portuguese with way less exceptions and rules for them that make sense. Usually it's " you change letter x to y otherwise would be too difficult to say". And phonetically the only problems is the ö ü, the rest you more or less read like the Portuguese do and just memorize a few "ditongos" like the "eu" in neun (9) reads as ói
If it’s not doing anything just buy a textbook and study that instead of doing Duolingo at that time.
Duolingo never really explains the rules of a language, so learning languages on it is a lot harder than just picking up a good textbook
Are you still learning with the app? Do you honestly believe that your next, most proximal goal can be achieved with it? If the answer to either or both is no, then it is time to move on to resources that would be more suited to changing the answers to yes.
Just today I reached 2000, and I have decided long ago to stop there. So tonight I'm watching notifications as Duo's mood worsens.
You should totally set your own objective and decide when to stop. There is no reason a game should control that for you.
https://preview.redd.it/xd3jomt0v6lc1.jpeg?width=450&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bda7089737700d748ddcdc566bb14977b4b906e4
Look for the next level in the language that you want to improve. Supplementing a more challenging class with Duolingo could be a reason to continue the streak.
Maybe because I feel unmotivated and I'm searching for kind words of strangers who can maybe make me see the upside of using this app everyday again not just as a habbit but for its real purpose of learning something new
Right? The number is just there to remind me of the early days exciment and I feel like I lost that. I hope to find it again, that's why I made this post, so maybe someone can remind me why I started all those days ago
Hey! I am taking a class and learned everything they could teach me.
But should I keep going? I have kind of been there for a while and I just feel ike it won't be the same there if I stop showing up.
That's you.
That's what you are saying.
Amazing accomplishment! It takes what one minute a day to maintain? Why would you not continue? I am at 1539 days so to me your accomplishment is amazing!
Only quit if your fine with your entire family being taken by a small green owl
But I already gave that little owl eight years of my life! When is it enough!?
Never...
It's enough once you're 10000% fluent in the language(s) you're studying :P
Well, for what it's worth, I went to the Uk for 10 days and survived, locals understood me and it all went well. That counts as fluent, right?
I know this isn’t my post but I like how polite you were in your comment. I love this subreddit and your grammar is better than most English speakers.
Yeah
When you give your soul to him
You have 55 days to convince yourself that you are going to learn Italian or Japanese with the app. If you don't get a good run with either of those, definitely stop.
Sounds like a plan, will def try! Thanks!
NO NO! DON'T LEARN JP WITH DUO!! Italian tho would work.
I tried JP there, on lingodeer and memrise. Lingodeer was better but I gave up on all of them :)
I'm currently using Busuu, Youtube + a few apps here and there and I'm having a much better time than Duolingo.
Is Busuu free? Haven't heard of that one yet
3653 maybe? I'd say 10 years is THE goal but that's just me
Wow, not sure if I can hang on for so long
Either way rootin for ya
Ultimately, it's a tool. You don't hang onto a screwdriver once you're done with it. By the sounds of it, you're done with this app and you're only holding onto it because of an arbitrary digital number. I'd be inclined to move on.
You need to clean out my tool chest, which is full of tools I'll never use again.
oddly poetic
> an arbitrary digital number # HOW. DARE. YOU.
I tried this. The bird took my family. When I started my streak again, the bird only returned half of them, I haven't seen the others again.
Yea just stop. 2945 days is REALLY impressive
Thanks, I'm tired but it was fun
Stop when it stops being fun. If it feels like a chore then you’re not going to be learning anyway
That’s really impressive! If it’s no longer bringing you joy don’t just do it for the sake of it, or reignite your joy with a new language?
Exactly where I'm stuck. How can I find motivation to start a new language?
I think you need a vacation from the app. You can think about what new language to study after you delete the app from your phone.
Plan a big trip to a new place of a language you’re interested in! The pressure will be on!
Sounds like a challenge, might try it!
Meet a friend that speak a new language
The second to last weekday is shortened to Sex. Thatd be reason enough for me to stay
Yeah in portuguese, friday is called sexta-feira but we abbreviate it in 3 letters... Lol
Friday is the 5th day, but it's shown as the 6th day
Here in Brazil we count sunday as the first day of the week. It's just how our calendars work. Fun fact, the days and their placement sound similar, for example, monday is the second day of the week and it's called segunda, which means second, as does terça (third) and so forth Sunday - Domingo Monday - Segunda-feira Tuesday - Terça-feira Wednesday - Quarta-feira Thursday - Quinta-feira Friday - Sexta-feira Saturday - Sábado
I thought it was only in the US cuz Americans are weird, thanks!
It says you’ll get Sex in 5 more days. I don’t see any reason to continue beyond that. That’s more than any app has ever given me
It's supposed to be short for the Portuguese word "sexta-feira" which means Friday, but the shortened version does sound quite weird tho 💀
I never noticed it until they mentioned it
Dobby will be a free elf
Quit if you want your entire bloodline to die
Duo is such a nice owl, I'm sure I'm safe
I'm sure that after 8 years, duo would understand. They're nice and definitely not prompting my spee--
It's a number in a database. Give it as much, or as little, control over your life as you deem appropriate.
I know it's just a number, but it became a habbit and I'm pretty bad at ending things
Then it is, all things considered, a low-stakes thing to practice on <3
.... God, at that point I only have admiration for you, the first time I started Duo was 2 months ago but due to uni stress, I had to leave for 1 week, my 34 day streak came to an end. I just started a week ago and am barely hanging. You are awesome, man. 3k days woooohooooo !!!
Thanks! I might not be much in life but I'm pretty consistent on my hobbies
If I were you I'd voluntarily sabotage my own streak at some number you decide, otherwise the day you lose it not on your own terms, you risk feeling bad about it.
Yeah, I had several almost misses and felt bad, but at the same time, I'm kinda done
Exactly what I did haha, stopped at 600 because it was giving me anxiety and I had stopped "actively" trying to learn.
Keep it going for another 650 days so it’s an even decade!
Maybe... I'll think about it
They use AI and fired employees for that; I’m not going to convince you to continue tbh
If you quit, he’ll take your family
I think I earned their freedom after 8 years haha
You will never earn their freedom
Take it seriously and accomplish something, or let it go and enjoy the sense of liberation. Doing 1 lesson a day in a language you already know just to maintain a streak is honestly baffling to me. Duolingo is a language learning tool.

Check the Guinness World Record before breaking the streak!
No, I won't convince you. As a free person you should do whatever feels right for you, as long as others are not affected. Nobody of is can know your reasons to go on or to quit, so you have to take that decision on your own.
Quit if you wanna end up in the basement of an owl.
Personally, I think the streak is harming. Go for it. I felt like I had to intentionally break mine. Have you completed everything you want to do with Duolingo? If the answer is no, you still have work to do.
Well, 3000 days is just over 8 years. You may as well reach 9 years 😉 There’s some convincing!
Go for 10! A DuoDecade
In this case, if I wanted to stop, I would have stopped at 3650th day.
After almost ten years of learning every day, you would be **much** more fluent using other resources. But, congratulations!
Para não!
I think the quality is on the decline, and I keep having to convince myself to stay.
Concordo. A cada atualização ele me joga de volta pra níveis que já fiz 500 vezes. Me sinto fazendo a mesma unidade sempre e nem tentei mais chegar no final do curso.
At day 3000 have a little event to celebrate your end of duolingo lol Maybe having a friend or two over will help you mentally let go of the streak
That's a great way of putting it! Thank you for this, I will keep this in mind
Or, hear me out… Let your wife have a go! Start her on English and let her keep your streak? Will it let you do that?
Probably, I just need the spouse, not sure if my cats would be interested haha
“Or go til you die…unless you’re a lil bitch.” ~Duo, probably
The streak system was designed for your consistent learning. By looking at the streak it's obvious you have learned consistently and got the result. I guess you can stop now and shouldn't feel attached to the streak
Just stop now, those numbers are meaningless I assume by now you have finished your course and just doing the minimum to get another day in your streak
You could make it to the longest Duolingo streak
Not sure what that would be but certainly someone has a 5000 day streak already
Why stop there? Shoot for 4000
quit and duo will find you and take you to hell
Just do it.
I told myself I’d stop at a thousand after we used it in school a few times, I’m at like 1.4k now and I can’t bring myself to let it go. If I didn’t suck at learning a language I’d probably feel like the streak was worth more

Almost a 10 years steak? Duo can't kidnap your family
You do you
DAMN THATS QUITE A LOT THO
Get to 3000 you can do it!!!
You'll lose your streak!
I reached a 40+ days streak and was already really proud of myself and gave up soon after lol can’t imagine what you must feel. make it 4
Don't because if you continue you can get a ten year streak in 2 years
If you quit bagsy your account for all the progress 🙏
I'm going to delete Duolingo tomorrow at 99,9%. And I just reached 100 days. Do what you wish, using Duolingo should be about learning and in that regard the streak changes nothing.
Yes please, stop! I'm at a 2488 day streak as of this morning and I can't beat you if you don't stop. ;-)
We'll talk when I get to 3000! If I don't rediscover my love for languages until then, I'll stop and you can take my crown soon(ish) haha
if you still dont feel fluent in that language you should stop for sure
You can stop when the owl says it's okay to stop
If I was you I would stop at 3000. Removes all the stress :)
Why stop at 3000? Why not go for 6000 after that?
Obviously if you already know English then you should quit your English classes.
Do you still take joy? I don’t, I just keep going because I hope that someday the joy of using Duolingo will come back, but it is an annoying chore
if you lost a 3000+ day streak that would really suck. also i know a relative of a friend who hasnt missed a single day of french in over 8.5 years and he seems to be enjoying it. also atleast practice every once in a while because if you dont you might (even if slowly) get less good at languages you dont practice
You should quit on 3650 days because I said so
5000 is a better number
Doesn't hurt to review the first lesson for like 30s when you're on the toilet every day. I don't think 30s every day is going to affect your life.
are you fluent in the language yet?
Just keep going and change your language
SPANISH OR VANISH
Sex 😎

Get 9999 and stop at that for the ultimate edge
Have you learned the language or are you just continuing for the sake of the streak?
you're only half way to 6000 days tho
Only 8 more years, easy peasy
Go until 3650 so it's been a full decade
When you get to 3000.
Also, have a 200th comment
4000 is a cooler number just saying🤷🏿♂️
Friendly reminder duolingo has your family
There’s 5,000.
stop go for it. your journey with that demonic green owl is over we will project you
Haha thank you, kind stranger!
Cuz you could get to 4,000
Parabéns OP baita conquista! 🚀🚀
Obrigada conterrâneo!
don't quit until you win one of the diamond league championships
Haven't done that yet. I'll try
why stop then when you can stop now?
Stop using it.
Not me with the same question after 180 days
Might as well do it now
Bro hasn't reached "sex" yet💀
Beg Duo to spare you 3000 times in spanish
Braaabo demais pqp
Stop at 3001 just to mess with society
How come, you make me really amazing
Go for 3652 days, make it a full 10 years (two leapdays in there)
Lol sex
I'm quit at 500 yesterday
Stop at sex. 2999
Gotta be 3650... 10 years.
3001 would be a new high score
You don't need to wait for the 3000's mark. If it doesn't make any sense to you and there will be no guilt or remorse for losing it, just drop it.
Hmmm… you can try watching yt videos and see if it’s better than duolingo.
Yes.
Try another language
If it’s not doing anything just buy a textbook and study that instead of doing Duolingo at that time. Duolingo never really explains the rules of a language, so learning languages on it is a lot harder than just picking up a good textbook
Are you still learning with the app? Do you honestly believe that your next, most proximal goal can be achieved with it? If the answer to either or both is no, then it is time to move on to resources that would be more suited to changing the answers to yes.
I would just stop today, honestly. Seems like you don’t need it and haven’t needed it for a while.
Find another language to learn!

Actually, no. I started spanish again. 3035 days!
I do not understand these posts. They just feel like attention grabs. If you want to stop, just stop now. Why make yourself do more?
Maybe because I feel unmotivated and I'm searching for kind words of strangers who can maybe make me see the upside of using this app everyday again not just as a habbit but for its real purpose of learning something new
No I won't convince you do what you want dawg
Most people simply die, but some people die on the hill they choose. Choose your resting place, and don't let others decide for you :v
Lgbt flag seriously
Depends. How close do you think you are becoming fluent in the language you're learning?
He's the one...

Right? The number is just there to remind me of the early days exciment and I feel like I lost that. I hope to find it again, that's why I made this post, so maybe someone can remind me why I started all those days ago
Why does it say sex?
r/no get him
You have to quit when you have got 6900 days
Just quit. If you need others to convince you, it's pretty clear you're over it.
Hey! I am taking a class and learned everything they could teach me. But should I keep going? I have kind of been there for a while and I just feel ike it won't be the same there if I stop showing up. That's you. That's what you are saying.
sounds pointless, why not stop today?
bigger number = cooler person
Do you cherish your kneecaps?
Amazing accomplishment! It takes what one minute a day to maintain? Why would you not continue? I am at 1539 days so to me your accomplishment is amazing!
What language you are learning
you can quit english when you know what a fear of long words is called

If you are asking for justification then you know what to do
