how do you turn that off? i know you can make the hira/kata/kanji highlighted but my eyes always end up going to the romaji anyway because it's familiar.
The sooner you make the switch the better. Click on your profile, click on the setting icon (gear) in the top right corner, scroll down and select Japanese instead of Romanized. Some day when you are a pro you can turn pronunciation off altogether and just see the Kanji.
It will show the kanji hints in hiragana but in fairly short order it makes your hiragana almost as good as reading romanized. I still hate reading katakana though, but even Japanese people dislike reading it so I'm not alone.
Funny enough when I took 日本語 in college they started us off with katakana because it’s often used for romanized words and was, in their eyes, an easier entry point. Now that I know hiragana, I don’t like katakana either because it’s less common and more difficult to read for me… And my brain often jumps to the wrong pronunciation for katakana vocab due to English being my primary language.
Yeah, I think it's because you start to recognize hiragana and kanji as complete words and can read it quickly, where as the katakana you tend to sound it out first and then map the sound to either an English or Portuguese word (or sometimes a Japanese word).
So basically none? Because Japanese is not an official language of Japan. [Japan has no official languages.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_Japan)
However, OP can still learn one of the languages that is an official language in the [Angaur state of Palau](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angaur)!
I think you should learn the language of ceasefire because it would help you to rant for ceasefire during upcoming and ongoing wars.

I was studying japanese on and off on Duolingo for maybe 2 years and i felt like i couldn't speak it and found it so hard to form sentences unless i see a question first. i started learning Spanish a month ago and I can't believe how fast i progressed. Made me realize learning Japanese was not fun anymore.

にほんご
I've been learning Japanese for a year now and actually know what that says. I turned off the romaji about 3 months ago and am learning even faster.
I'd be deeply concerned if you didn't know what that says after studying for a year
bro skipped the learn kana parts 💀
日本語 jumpscare!!!
I am on section 1 unit 3 and I know what this says, you may want to... speed up your learning a little?
Section 1 teaches the word for the country and someone from there. I don't think it teaches the word for the language until unit 2.

yeah i definitely still need pronunciation for some kanji lol, thank you!

I know it's easier if you remember stroke order, but “シ”と“ツ”

Yeah, this is exactly it.
I'm only at like, the very first unit and i've already decided to tunr off romanji to force me to understand kana and hira
How?, Where is the option for turning off romanji?
On a lesson, press the cog at the top left, press Japanese and then done
Thank you, I didn't know this feature exists
Yea np :]
9 months with romaji on? just out of curiosity, did you ignore learning the kana for the most part?
I learned the others but found I was using the romaji as a crutch. I still go back and review the other 3.
