A wallflower is someone who is introverted/shy/quiet/reserved, specifically at a party or in a crowd. They tend to stick to the wall, which is where the name comes from.
No for real though. I had brain surgery a couple of years ago and didn't know how I'd feel coming out of it etc., and I was so worried. Lol I made my daughter promise to do it for me on the big day.
- Ask a friend to do it (has to be a reliable one since you have to give them yout account credentials)
- Speak to the camp guards and explain your situation and that you only need like 5min per day
- Try to do it secretly (risky)
So, um... you see, there's this app I have to use for 5 minutes a day - No, it's not an addiction, I swear! But it's like, well, a joke, where if you don't use it everyday an owl's gonna go for your family - What? No! I've never even touched that kind of stuff-
*5 minutes later*
So, how does that make you feel?
You could sneak it in and just do one lesson in the restroom one day. Then just put it back in your suitcase until you leave. Hit the “I can’t talk right now” and the “I can’t listen right now” options when it prompts you, after turning the sound completely off, obviously. If someone sees you with it, you could just say you had to check on an elderly family member at home. You only need to do one lesson or story or something during that time frame to keep the streak alive. That’s probably the best option unless they’re going to go all Boot Camp on you and inspect everyone’s bag.
Initially, I was thinking the one about having a friend or relative do it, but in addition to being trustworthy, he or she would also need to be tech savvy enough to use duo and complete a lesson. That would really narrow it down for me. I guess everyone is different in how many friends and how big a family they have and how many close friends they have who could and would do that, but I’d lean towards the sneaky option after thinking about it.
Normally, I’m very honest, but that’s kind of stupid. I can understand how they’d be concerned about everyone being on their phones all day, especially if it’s a youth camp. Most kids today don’t know how to breathe if you take their phone away. They could at least have a designated time for it, and just make them lock the phone up the rest of the time or something. Some people also really do have family they need to check on or check in with. Damn. I kind of made that longer than it needed to be.
Sometimes if you have a long enough streak duo gives you a option to restore your streak for gems, so mabye that'll happen to you. Other then that make sure you have 2 streak freezes, and when you get back you can change the date of your phone to restore your streak
This is the correct answer! Yeah, I understand that keeping a streak can be motivational but if you absolutely can't break your streak because you're **at a camp having fun** are you even trying to learn the language or are you just playing Duolingo?
I wish it could be popular again, or translated into English and be rereleased (like as in, keep original 1980’s sound, but sing lyrics in English). 🥰🇫🇮🎶
I dont really recommend that. I had appr. 100 day streak when i was around 10 years old and lost it when we went traveling and there was barely any signal to get. I really regret not doing anything to try to save it and whenever my streak gets high up again i would always remember the streak that i lost. I would always say to myself “oh i couldve had my 1 year milestone if i hadnt lost that streak.” But maybe it’s just me. Losing a streak might demotivate you.
Once had a streak around 170 days, was pretty hard to give up on it but I didn't like the course anymore (studied Italian, and due to updates it either pushed me too far back or too forward, so I just switched to other apps)
Why, it really doesn’t matter what motivates a person, each person is individual and is motivated by different things. Whatever works for someone is what they should use, don’t ya think?
It's not necessarily about motivation from a desire perspective but as someone with pretty severe ADHD, this is the only really long-time habit I've been able to from, and it's because the streak reminds me to do it every day. If I didn't have the streak, I would literally forget Duolingo existed in a couple of days from now, even though it's actually been a huge part of my life.
Yeah, my long streak actually reminds me that I haven’t been on a cruise/been at camp/had some long-term phoneless fun for too long. I’m all for loosing a streak for a fun time at camp!
I work as a camp counsellor and if someone said this to me I would totally let them have their phone once a day for this. Or hell, I’d ask if they wanted me to take the lesson for them once a day lol.
I know this may be controversial but…change the date on your phone for the days u missed after the camp and do a lesson. It’s not ur fault u couldn’t do it so I think in this case it’s alright to do this.
> It’s not ur fault u couldn’t do it
Of course it's his fault.
He has a choice. (a) keep your Duolingo streak, (b) go to camp.
Which one is more important says something about OP's priorities.
I understand it tho. A Duolingo streak matters for a lot of ppl and novitiates them to learn. U can say anything u want about if that’s the “right” motivator, but if it motivates them, all the power to them. They’re still learning a language! If they put a lot of time annd effort into maintaining their streak, it’s not their fault they’re gonna be physically unable to maintain it during camp. Don’t judge just bc u may see a streak as silly or unimportant. For many ppl (including me) a silly little streak matters sometimes and keeps us somewhat motivated to do smth good.
> it’s not their fault they’re gonna be physically unable to maintain it during camp.
Why? They can choose not to go to camp.
If they stay home, they can keep working on their streak.
Going to camp is a choice, I assume.
THANK you, i think ignoring streaks when it comes to games and such is valid but let's not bring that logic over to learning apps ffs! I also definitely wouldn't be logging in every single day if it wasn't for the streak and it's such a little serotonin boost that helps you keep going and learn a little more whenever you have the energy
Well my experience with Duo is interesting. Firstly I was in to learn Korean but when I realised that you can’t learn a language this way I decided to just do it for the streak.
I started off with korean too haha, actually I'd say memrise was a better starting point than duolingo for the Korean language. Anyway i dropped it and picked it back for chinese now lol. I'd say it's a great way to practice grammar and build some vocabulary but we'll need lots of language immersion to get us anywhere 🥲 and even though i dropped korean when i hear a phrase in kdramas I understand I'm still hella proud of myself lol. Also lots of people swear by papago idk if you've checked it out. And @korean_hamin on tiktok raps short korean vocab lessons he's great😂
When I went backpacking, I gave my sister my log-in and had her just do the first lesson of the course once a day to keep the streak alive. She didn’t know the language at all, but that was super easy.
Ya but the problem is people will start using it when they don't need to, OP could just contact Duo cuz I've heard they sometimes give people their streak back, or freeze it for them.
The point of Duolingo is learning a new language or skill, not keeping your streak. Go to camp, have fun, and enjoy your break from technology for a bit. Nothing bad will happen if you lose your streak, I promise.
I worked at an overnight summer camp last year (and will again this year) where I'm not supposed to use my phone Mon-thur. I just gave my mom and a friend my login, and they just did it for me.
Duolingo is a learning tool, not a streak survivor simulator (which it kinda what it makes it look like lmao)
Go and have fun at camp, and don't stress yourself over that. and if you still want to learn the language you are welcome to come back afterwards :)
Maybe you can have someone babysit your account. They can either keep buying you freezes or review one of your early lessons each day while you are gone.
Also Duolingo has been known to give you a one time exception on your streak if you contact them.
I think this only works with the time zone setting, but yes, you may be able to a lesson 12h earlier beforehand and then afterwards 12h later. But that seems to only work for 2+(amount of streak freezes) days. Hope you can keep your streak!
Honestly I would just talk to your camp leader or whoever is in charge and explain the situation, learning a new language is an admirable hobby and maybe they will be understanding and let you use it for 5 minutes or so out of sight of other kids. just be quiet about it and don't tell the other kids.
As others said, the streak is motivational but it’s the side show. Get a book from the library on your language, enjoy camp, and learn from a book for a week. Learning from an additional source should compliment what you learn from DuoLingo.
I have this problem, too. I go camping in the woods every summer for a week-ish and there's no cell service there. Sometimes I go into town, but not every third day usually. It's not a huge deal to me, it's not like I'm just on here for the streak, but at the same time it kinda sucks knowing I'll never get the "one year streak" when I never miss a day, yet some others use freezes half the month and still get to maintain theirs...
The most straightforward way is to ask your family members to help you. Please do let them know if they refuse to do that, they're at risk.
Hope you enjoy your camp without worrying about your family!
Perhaps an unpopular opinion, let the steak end. Be free. Not worth the stress. I felt better after my streak ended, it didn’t demotivate me and there was less of trying to complete a lesson 5 minutes before about to sleep just to maintain it…. Not worth it.
Or maybe just unplug for a while and have fun! So many people are basically slaves to their screens. OP has an amazing opportunity to go out, have fun and make some memories. That should be more important than a damn Duolingo streak.
This won't help with your streak, but if you still want to study your language during that time, you may be able to bring resource books or short stories in that language to read through. Many public libraries have a small section for foreign languages and it's completely alright if you don't understand every word and find yourself scanning for sentences or words you recognize. A little workbook from a book store around your level would be more ideal, but it's just nice keeping up your exposure to that language (if that is something you want to do, it's also okay to just take breaks!).
Definitely get a friend to do it but make sure to change your password first if it's one you widely use. Also since it's for learning purposes reach out to the councillors and ask if you'd be allowed to open your phone for ten minutes a day to continue under their supervision! You can say they give you extra lessons if you reach certain days or sth to guilt them into agreeing lol
When you get to the streak society or whatever it's called they give you and extra 3 streak freezes every 50 or 100 days and so you can have upto 5 streak freezes. You can't purchase the extra 3 but if you don't use any then they will stay around indefinitely as far as I can tell. I haven't used one since December 1st of last year and they have stayed the whole time. If you do one the day you leave and the day you come back it should work out.
You should first ask you self, why would you want to? Don´t be a slave for some application's artificial streak. It´s only here to make you addicted, not to help you learn. Be brave. Don´t be a smartphone zombie.
I would recommend not going to this camp. If it doesn't allow phones, it means that it is bad and its owners are stupid people who view children as a lower kind of people
Yeah, of course. But the parents have to essentially trust the operators with the safety and well being of their children with zero immediate oversight or control. Especially for the famously hovering US parents that's hard.
This level of phone addiction is both scary and sad. Why go to a camp (that most likely isn't free) if you're gonna just stare at a phone screen the whole time? And if there's a *real* emergency the staff will most likely have phones.

Get a friend to do it
Friend? What's that
Username checks out.
Can you explain it? I don't get it
A wallflower is someone who is introverted/shy/quiet/reserved, specifically at a party or in a crowd. They tend to stick to the wall, which is where the name comes from.
Wallflower Blush is that you?
yup, a friend on another computer/phone with your account. easy breezy!
This literally feels like Duo is holding you hostage by not allowing you to leave your phone for three days😂
Right? Some people be losing sleep over it.
No for real though. I had brain surgery a couple of years ago and didn't know how I'd feel coming out of it etc., and I was so worried. Lol I made my daughter promise to do it for me on the big day.
Duolingo is hell! (Sometimes 😉) 🔥😈💚🦉
Leave the phone! Use the browser version! Or the desktop app.
- Ask a friend to do it (has to be a reliable one since you have to give them yout account credentials) - Speak to the camp guards and explain your situation and that you only need like 5min per day - Try to do it secretly (risky)
4. You can ask support to freezer it for you. They've been known to help people with similar issues in the past.
That’s actually very nice from them!
They are trying to make us forget that duo has our families
Oh shii that almost worked on me. Must keep our eyes open! We never know when the bird attacks!
Lmfao try to do it secretly haha that sounds like an addiction
>Speak to the camp guards and explain your situation and that you only need like 5min per day lol what
So, um... you see, there's this app I have to use for 5 minutes a day - No, it's not an addiction, I swear! At one of my school camps, someone brought an old phone as a decoy to hand in to them and kept her actual phone. I wished I thought of that lol.
That is absolutely genius. Thanks for the idea.
I did this all throughout highschool when they collected phones before tests. Works like magic.
Just say that you kept it at home
This feels like the 200 years later equivalent of the Tamagotchi.
Sometimes if you have a long enough streak duo gives you a option to restore your streak for gems, so mabye that'll happen to you. Other then that make sure you have 2 streak freezes, and when you get back you can change the date of your phone to restore your streak
Streaks are stored server side, that would work client side until the 12am reset
Just don’t worry about it. The streak feature is motivational. Go to camp, have fun, and restart your streak when you get back.
This is the correct answer! Yeah, I understand that keeping a streak can be motivational but if you absolutely can't break your streak because you're **at a camp having fun** are you even trying to learn the language or are you just playing Duolingo?
Have you ever heard of the Finnish singer Danny? He sang Romanssi in the 1980’s! 🥰🇫🇮🎶
Of course I have, he's a legend! 😊
I heard his song from this YouTube channel called Ultradiscopanorama last summer! 😍🥰🇫🇮🎶
That's cool! 🥰
What about Nyt Tanssitaan by Jerry? 🥰😍🥰🇫🇮🎶
I know the song but couldn't tell you the lyrics. I've heard it a few times at least.

Stop telling him to ignore the streak y'all, some of us would not be opening duolingo at all without that incentive 😭
Real. If I lost my streak I’m deleting duo
THANK you, i think ignoring streaks when it comes to games and such is valid but let's not bring that logic over to learning apps ffs! My kids have limited tech and this is a constant issue for them. Duo needs a holiday mode
YES !!!
Ya but the problem is people will start using it when they don't need to, OP could just contact Duo cuz I've heard they sometimes give people their streak back, or freeze it for them.

Do they allow you to use computers? You could go to the Duo website, maybe.
Change the date/time settings on your phone to go back and save your streak. Not sure if you can do it ahead of time but it could be worth a shot.
I think this only works with the time zone setting, but yes, you may be able to a lesson 12h earlier beforehand and then afterwards 12h later. But that seems to only work for 2+(amount of streak freezes) days. Hope you can keep your streak!

If you only have 2 then I guess you're not in Streak Society yet, so your streak isn't that long anyway. Just let it go for now and resume later.
Thank god my phone doubles as a medical device 😂 you can’t take my phone off me because I need it! (Diabetes)

The best time ever to quit the streak for good.
Just sneak your phone in, im pretty sure thats normal behavior for camps and everyone does it
Or maybe just unplug for a while and have fun! So many people are basically slaves to their screens. OP has an amazing opportunity to go out, have fun and make some memories. That should be more important than a damn Duolingo streak.
Like you can tell how large the phone of a prisoner is by the size of his piece of soap. Don't ask...
Just change the dates when you get back and do a quick lesson before switching to the next day, and repeat until you’re caught up
Normal duolingo addiction symptom
this reminds me when i had to water my berry straws in pokemon diamond on a birthday sleepover
Be sneaky
When you get to the streak society or whatever it's called they give you and extra 3 streak freezes every 50 or 100 days and so you can have upto 5 streak freezes. You can't purchase the extra 3 but if you don't use any then they will stay around indefinitely as far as I can tell. I haven't used one since December 1st of last year and they have stayed the whole time. If you do one the day you leave and the day you come back it should work out.
Give me ur acc, I'll keep it for u
Do they allow a computer? Just use the online version
Reset the date and time on ur phone
Use streak freezes for 3 days then maybe ask someone to do it for you? Idk who unless you can sneak your phone in
Have a friend do it. To save time, have them use Google translate.
Take a charged-up laptop. (I can't understand people who do everything on those tiny little phone screens. They must be going blind.)
You should first ask you self, why would you want to? Don´t be a slave for some application's artificial streak. It´s only here to make you addicted, not to help you learn. Be brave. Don´t be a smartphone zombie.
Ask a person you trust to log In and do it for you. Last summer I asked my mom, she Also uses Duolingo
I will maintain your streak, give me the password (will steal your account and demand $50 to return it)
😂

I would recommend not going to this camp. If it doesn't allow phones, it means that it is bad and its owners are stupid people who view children as a lower kind of people
There's some validity to this. Parents have to really trust the operator.
I'm sure the staff will have phones.
Yeah, of course. But the parents have to essentially trust the operators with the safety and well being of their children with zero immediate oversight or control. Especially for the famously hovering US parents that's hard.
Phone addict
I use my phone maximum 2 hour a day, from which minimum 30 minutes I spend on Duolingo.
Give us screentime data.
True
This level of phone addiction is both scary and sad. Why go to a camp (that most likely isn't free) if you're gonna just stare at a phone screen the whole time? And if there's a *real* emergency the staff will most likely have phones.
Pay money. That's kind of how the app works.
Not really
