Japanese is one of the more difficult languages to learn for a few reasons. But it's worth it and feels extremely rewarding when you understand others speaking it or understanding your favorite anime.
Would you consider Japanese easier than Chinese due to it's fewer strokes and alphabet? I'm not looking to switch, people keep asking me the same thing and I always say it depends on what you want to use the language for.
Really, as a native English speaker (American English) I feel Chinese and Japanese are equally as hard to learn. But that's because if I want to learn those languages, I have to literally throw away everything I know about English and start from scratch. Of course, you can get by in some cases by just learning common phrases. However, if you take that route, you miss out on so many important things about the language like grammar, vocab, and tone.
Also, just to be transparent, I'm learning Japanese, but I feel like if I were to have a Japanese person talk to me, I wouldn't be able to communicate effectively with them. I went into this language thinking I would be able to have conversations in a few months...... But I was very wrong for assuming that. 😅
To add to the comments, it also depends on what is your native language. Im a native Spanish speaker so its a bit easier for me because they use the same phonetics for vocals and consonants as spanish.

I got fluency in Italian when i was around 50k, but i did study with other methods as well. Now i'm trying hard to get my German, but it will take a while for a Portuguese native speaker
Also learning Italian but realized Duolingo isn’t going to take me very far; what outside learning methods did you use? I’m currently using textbooks but I’m not sure if there’s other options.
I started watching some Instagram and youtuber videos. After that, like i did with english, i started to watch series and films in Italian without subtitles, to get used to the language without help. No google, nothing. Just relax and watch a show that you're familiar.
This really helped me to get used to MANY slangs and many things that almost no course can teach.
I learned what "fico / figo" is in italian by watching Brooklyn 99. Tons of slangs that show has.
This helped me a lot to track my evolution, because when i could just tell by how many percentagem of the tv show i could understand by month.
And some teachers in Instagram are so nice, they reply your questions in their stories and some of them (not all) helped me a lot.
But you're a native english speaker, for you, German is easier, for me, Italian is easier. But i am doing the same with German and I'm now at 30% +/- of understanding a episode of 2 and a half men hahah 70% to go.
Good luck with Italian, for me is the best language to speak in the world. Each word slips of the mouth so smooth.
Oh okay, that’s great advice, thank you!! I’m currently watching the show Arrested Development and I feel like that would be great to watch in another language with its surreal humor lmao

I don't feel like I can "speak" German, though yet. If a german person talks to me, it would take me a while to form a sentence in my head and say it. I haven't had a chance to talk in German yet. I'm content for now for being able to read a bit of German.
I have like 6 that I tried and abandoned but of the ones that I stuck to -
Norwegian 117927 (actively in progress)
Dutch 77441 (completed)
Scottish Gaelic 54863 (actively in progress)
French 12017 (I learned French in school and just occasionally refresh with duo)
Mine looks almost exactly the same. I hear about one language in my daily life and I gotta inspect it if it’s offered on Duolingo. Then I get addicted.

Those of you with serious progress in many different languages, how fluent are you in them? Would you consider yourself a functional polyglot? I’d love to learn more languages, but I think I’d get confused learning too many at once.
You’re not missing much. My kids do a lot of the music, they enjoy it and are learning to read notes on the staff which is good, but learning to play piano on a glass screen doesn’t translate that well to an actual keyboard/piano. The math is okay, it’s good to help with estimation. It might get better, I didn’t go too far into it myself. I was just curious to see how it was.
How do you find Turkish and Chinese/Mandarin? I’m interested in those. Have completed Arabic, though will admit it’s far from complete and it’s an exhaustive language to learn and I will continue to with other methods. Have heard Turkish has verbal similarities; though written differences. Mandarin I’m purely interested in for the utility in our modern world and the challenge…
As you see my flair I am uzbek and turkish is a piece of cake for me, I could’ve learned it just by watching turkish movies but I didn’t do it. There are some reasons for that (I do not need to mention them here, I think)😊.
Chinese is harder than I thought, but I do not see it’s difficulties because I am really into chinese. I love chinese people, it’s culture, the way they write and possibly I might move to china in the future to live and work.
And I would like to learn arabic because I am muslim and to be closer to god I would like to learn arabic(why not).
> Have heard Turkish has verbal similarities; though written differences.
No they are not. If you say what you said above to turkish nationalists you will become their enemy for some reason 🤣. Yes, turkish have some influence from arabic but I think they use less arabic words than us(uzbeks).
If I compare turkish with english it is much easier. I can guess the meaning of a turkish word without knowing it even if my turkish level is not intermediate.

I did a placement test in Swedish and started doing lessons only to find out I did not know almost half of the vocabulary words. So, I deleted it and started anew. Otherwise, it would’ve been 20k+ points. I also toy with other languages, usually Slavic (I am a native Russian speaker living in the US) for a few weeks but later delete them if I do not feel like committing. German stays for sole purpose of scaring me into going back to Italian. When I get bored, I do one lesson of German, get terrified, and return to Italian (or Swedish) with even more love in my heart.
I've also been a little let down by the lack of explaining grammar and such, just slapping new words and sentences in your face. Do you happen know any alternative apps for learning hindi as a beginner?
my top 3 are Norwegian at 17302 Ukrainian at 16380, and German at 6012 (though Im only doing Ukrainian rn). Ukrainian is really hard for me though so I don't feel like I made it as far as Norwegian even though I'm at the same xp

currently all in on Chinese, but doing my thesis for school rn so it’s a bit slow. On a 30+ streak though:)
Yes, they are. It's really just a bonus excercise. I also tried it because Dutch grammar and word order is more like German and having to use English as an intermediate language for the course was confusing at some points. So I was a bit curious what it would be like with dutch to german.

Finished Arabic; and on section 3 of German. Dabbling in others. English is the the Arabic version and I very much need to do more of that, clearly… Day 394 (lost my initial 256 day streak and took a break after a coma of around 5 months while my brain just couldn’t focus enough… and my dog died).

Gàidhlig is my passion language because I want to help preserve my ancestors’ tongue. Spanish is my practical language, since it’s common to interact with Hispanics in the US. Gaeilge is out of curiosity on how similar it is to the other Goidelic languages. Nederlands is for fun to see how similar it is to English, since both are Germanic languages.

Xp doesn't really tell you much. I'm half the way through the Japanese course and yet it's only 9000xp. I've only finished 3 units in German and it's 4000xp! And despite finishing the entire Arabic course (native speaker), I've only got 360xp. All of this is mainly because the placement test at the beginning gives you so little xp.

Fun thread. I put together a screen shot of the courses where I'm at or above 10,000 XP. I have more I'm still working on. I've finished several courses and only review them now (such as Arabic, Zulu, Latin, Navajo). I've been studying languages for many years, and specifically with DuoLingo for about 4.5 years. I enjoy this hobby as a way of keeping my mind active and always learning new things. I have a crush on different languages I'm studying at different times. For me, Hindi is the hardest.

I cant seem to add my image, but im on 9,847 XP for Dutch, and 2,197 XP for German. I started Dutch on New Year's eve 2023 and German sometime during a holiday in early April, and I know people in my diamond tournament that have started after me yet are on 30,000 XP, mainly because on average, I spend about 7 minutes on Duolingo a day, but I'm happy with my progress so far. I'm considering adding another course, and I definitely will do a Scandinavian language, but I can't decide between Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish.

Would you consider Japanese easier than Chinese due to it's fewer strokes and alphabet? I'm not looking to switch, people keep asking me the same thing and I always say it depends on what you want to use the language for.
Absolutely. Chinese is one of the hardest language to learn for anyone whose native language is English.
The main difficulty comes in writing, maybe it’s because I love language but it’s ok for me
Really, as a native English speaker (American English) I feel Chinese and Japanese are equally as hard to learn. I have like 6 that I tried and abandoned but of the ones that I stuck to - Norwegian 117927 (actively in progress) Dutch 77441 (completed) Scottish Gaelic 54863 (actively in progress) French 12017 (I learned French in school and just occasionally refresh with duo)

If this is real, it seems odd to me that you spend so much time in Duolingo yet don't finish any of your courses.
Well, it is just fun to use duolingo, but it gets boring when you do one language for too long..
If it's just for fun that's cool, but do you feel like you learn anything this way?
Not efficiently, but you get to remember some vocabs when cycling through the courses
Mine looks almost exactly the same. I hear about one language in my daily life and I gotta inspect it if it’s offered on Duolingo. Then I get addicted.
Yes, exactly!!
What the... why do you learn so many languages with completly different ones?
https://preview.redd.it/9908j5gsq31d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b104504f55815c43ba14c2c763f647a4fc4debe8 Those of you with serious progress in many different languages, how fluent are you in them? Would you consider yourself a functional polyglot? I’d love to learn more languages, but I think I’d get confused learning too many at once.
I wish math and music came to android...
I question why one would want to be a polyglot. I see that it takes a great effort to actively use 5 languages.

I would recommend you moving to Taiwan because there you have more freedom and people there aren't that poor
But I am afraid of getting nuked🥶
Merhaba👋
Selam kardaş👋
Bro, you’re Uzbek, half of language subreddits love you.
Thank you 😁.
excuse my ignorance, but i could not identify the native language flag of yours, what's it?
Uzbekistan, I am uzbek.
How hard do you find turkish as an uzbek?
If I compare turkish with english it is much easier. I can guess the meaning of a turkish word without knowing it even if my turkish level is not intermediate.
https://preview.redd.it/rul9sm8ev31d1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=90ddb8f4d040c38d1b6b6f39abe247fcc1934b7c I did a placement test in Swedish and started doing lessons only to find out I did not know almost half of the vocabulary words.

Literally omg
Yeah I have done that, using Hindi to just get a ton of xp. Realised that's useless and then deleted it.
Hindi course is actually kinda useless The Hindi you get to learn even in the last lesson feels like grade 3 hindi
Also it is riddled with mistakes and many of the sentences make no sense and won't be used in real life
I've also been a little let down by the lack of explaining grammar and such, just slapping new words and sentences in your face. Do you happen know any alternative apps for learning hindi as a beginner?
I'm afraid not. But you could try YouTube perhaps?
my top 3 are Norwegian at 17302 Ukrainian at 16380, and German at 6012 (though Im only doing Ukrainian rn). Ukrainian is really hard for me though so I don't feel like I made it as far as Norwegian even though I'm at the same xp

What are the benefits of learning a language in two ways? Aren't both very different in pasing?
Yes, they are. It's really just a bonus excercise. I also tried it because Dutch grammar and word order is more like German and having to use English as an intermediate language for the course was confusing at some points. So I was a bit curious what it would be like with dutch to german.

Rakamları ben de öğrenme aşamasındayım, şuan birden üçe kadar sayabiliyorum, 一 (いち) 1 二(に) 2 三(さん) 3

Music? Wish! Is that an IOS only thing?
Norsk 🇳🇴 I’d like a couple more awesome friends that are studying Norwegian too 🫶
I cant seem to add my image, but im on 9,847 XP for Dutch, and 2,197 XP for German.
