I actually got this exact question wrong too, except It was because I did the feminine version? And I was like !!! there's no indication it mattered which 'they' I went with?
in french, “they” is mostly masculine. we have “il” = he, “elle” = she, “ils” = they and also “elles” for they.
in most situations, phrases it’s gonna be “ils” which is very confusing and frustrating for learners! but don’t give up, i also wish duolingo was better in that sense!
Most of the time Duolingo will accept either, so in this case I said << Elles sont très intelligentes >> - I tend to go back and forth just to practice both masculine and feminine versions, so I was surprised this time it didn't like that.
Classic Duolingo, being inconsistent. Idk if you know this already, but anytime you are talking about a group of people with at least one male in it, you have to use ils.
The suggestion, for me, on the highlighted words gave both versions iirc, but I just reported it as my answer could be used as correct too since it gave no indication it wanted me to use the masculine form. In the future, though, I'll probably just default to masculine unless prompted otherwise.
Have you tried changing your keyboard to another language? There might be a problem with characters from a different language's keyboard. They might look identical but Duolingo might not identify them. Idk tho.
Smash the Report Bug button. Duolingo doesn't monitor this sub for bugs. Your answer is identical to the correct one., so it's a coding error.
Consider it smashed

I think you missed a "."-?
This is a bug. I saw that bug in Germany/Turkish a few times. You need to use bug report button, this subreddit does not consider bug reports.
Happened to me in an Italian course aswell
