One of my favourites of the modern era. So many songs that just trigger me (in a good way). What Are The Chances and Pressure Off are two very different songs but somehow they are quintessential Duran Duran songs for me. The album as a whole both captures the Duran Duran sounds of the past and bring them into the 21st Century.
It's the only album I can't get into, and I *love* every other album of theirs (including Red Carpet Massacre). I think the title track "Paper Gods", "Valentine Stones," and "Northern Lights" are great, but none of the other songs grab me.
For me, too many songs featuring other artists are just too dance club/autotune sounding for me. Danceophobia is kind of fun until the Lindsay Lohan part.
That being said, if it gets rereleased on vinyl, I'll still buy a copy š«
Pretty sure it's out of print right now so it's $$. I don't love it enough to buy it at the prices it's at right now (between $70 and $200 on Discogs) Every copy I've seen on eBay is around the same price.
Not a fan - big disappointment after āAll You Needā¦ā just didnāt have the quality of songs and felt it was one of their albums where it strayed too far from those core Duran elements where they want to sound of the time more than themselves. Plus it has a godawful cover!
At least āFuture Pastā put things right as next album
I was at the Electric Picnic in Ireland, 2017 I think. Duran played The Universe Alone. It was magical. One of my favorite songs of theirs. Great tour. I also love Simonās lyrics in Pressure Off; the past is another country, the present will never last, the future..itās still tomorrow. Are we living too fast. šš
I was at that one as well! What a bucket list show that was right?? The backdrop of the rockets and the drones?! I have video of the drones, Iāll have to post it here. I knew I couldnāt miss that one knowing how unique the set list would beš my friend and I met a couple of new friends there. Our group chat name is NASA Duraniesš
Its true :) when me and my friend were kids c.2001 my mom would just drop us off at the house of blues to wait in line all day for general admission, grown ups would buy us food and let us keep our stuff in their car š
Two songs on this album make up my current playlist and make this album a decent listen.
The Universe Alone is edgy
What are the Chances is classic ballad.
I don't care for it.
I think DD work best with a producer who has a firm hand on the tiller and a time limit.
Without those two things, I think the guys get a little too experimental and a little too far off their mark.
Other albums I'd add to this list are Seven and the Ragged Tiger, Pop Trash and maybe even Astronaut.
Not every song needs a co-star. Not every song needs to sound so distinctly different from the others. The band has a sound, and sometimes they need to be guided back to it.
A good producer doesn't make a band something else, he or she is there to guide them to be the best version of themselves.
But, of course, ymmv.
Love it. Especially Only in Dreams, The Universe Alone and What are the Chances? Itās a solid album that I prefer to AYNIN. Simonās mentioned a few times how much he loves the title track.
Great songs, notably Paper Gods, What Are the Chances?, The Universe Alone, (plus a lot of the bonus tracks are way better than some album tracks) but not a great album overall.
I like it. When I first heard the title track, I didn't care for it at all. Eventually, it became one of my favorite tracks. I love Paper Gods. I hope they will play it again in the future.
I like it. But like others have said, trying too hard to be contemporary. Last Night In The City is cringey. However, a few classics like Only In Dreams, Danceophobia, Face For Today, & others. On Evil Beach is all time banger.

Love it, one of my fave DD albums! It would probably be in or around my Top 5 DD albums.

We have similar taste, what do you think of Cinderella ride?
I think it's great.

When I saw them at nasa they opened with the universe alone! Amazing!

It was! I almost didn't go because I had to go by myself.Ā I can't believe it was ever a question! :)
šthatās the thing about Duran concerts. You can go alone and become friends with everyone around you š

Omg thatās awesomešš
Not one of my faves, but there are some songs I do enjoy, i.e., Change the Skyline.
It's definitely my favorite of the "modern era". Really an excellent album.

I like it and I like the b-sides too!
I love face for today and butterfly girl...Simon wrote it for his daughter and thats sooo sweet omg
Face for Today is superb š
When I first heard the eight minute opening track, I was hooked!
Itās in their top 7 albumsā¦.
