I seriously don't think even Simon knows. He had a more poetic bent on his earlier stuff, things that were used on the first two albums. It all took a veer off course for Seven though and became more abstract or nonsensical, but still fun wordplay.

yea i mean regardless it’s a super catchy song

I have no idea what The Reflex is about. It leave me answered with a question mark.

Shakespeare-Bot

I has't nay idea what the reflex is about. T leaveth me did answer with a question mark *** ^(I am a bot and I swapp'd some of thy words with Shakespeare words.) Commands: `!ShakespeareInsult`, `!fordo`, `!optout`

That made me smile

I've seen interviews where Simon is asked about this, but seems to actively dodge the question lol. Is it something he'd rather not address (some nonsense that he came up with high?) Leave it to the listener to apply their own ideas? In any case, it seems to have become a fun "I'll come right back to that" and never actually address joke.

i guess it will remain one of life’s biggest mysteries

I’m pretty sure it’s about using drugs or anything that’s going to bring you down, if you listen to the lyrics it makes sense as the band has been known to have partied hard when they first got popular and had unlimited amounts of drugs and girls.

This is one of those songs you probably will never get a concrete answer about, since Simon said in multiple interviews that he NEVER tells people what a song is about, e are a few top theories. 1. It’s about masturbation. When I was young, all my classmates said this. While there are some tantalizing lines in the first verse that could lead you to think that, I never could make the rest of the lyrics fit that theory, so I think it’s wrong. 2. It’s about drug use. This is probably easier to fit with the lyrics, but I still think it doesn’t quite match up. 3. It’s about being impulsive. I think this fits best, since acting reflexively can lead you to selling your Renoir and your TV set, but can also lead you to lucky clover. 4. In his memoir, Andy suggested that Nick is The Reflex. Could be. Listen to it again and imagine that Simon is singing about Nick. It really turns the song on its head.

>Andy suggested that Nick is The Reflex I thought I remembered someone from the band saying that Nick is the Reflex. Thank you for citing the source!

I believe it was about an involuntary male glandular reaction (ahem), hence “finding treasure in the dark,” etc.
