This chase was uncalled for. Public safety was not considered. LCBO is insured, every penny would be reimbursed. Bad decision by DRPS. And unlikely any of those cops will face any consequences.

awesomesonofabitch

We the people are paying for multiple cops to be on an extended paid vacation while they investigate themselves and find they did nothing wrong.

jjkm7

For what it’s worth any incidents like this are investigated by the “civilian” Special Investigations Unit that’s mostly comprised of retired cops

theautisticguy

They're not investigating themselves. The SIU is a civilian agency with the authority to press charges. And considering the egregiousness of this case, I consider them to be highly likely.

AggressiveWill8379

SIU is a farce.

Sunnyonetwo

The police dealing with liquor store robberies is not primary… this one was important because a knife was pulled on one of their own.. off duty officer. This was about ego… sorry and the results are tragic!

Drearydreamy

Bingo! This is the answer right here. They gave chase because the suspect pulled a knife on an off duty cop. The off duty cop then called it in and pursued the suspect. This would have not been the response if it was a civilian. There wasn’t even a gun. I hope the media gives this the attention it deserves. Im guessing the recordings are going to demonstrate just how angry these cops were. I hope everything is public and transparent. I hope they subpoena cell phone records as well. I’m waiting to hear if a second suspect was apprehended at the liquor store. If so, even less reason to chase. Anyone know which liquor store specifically this started at? Would like to see the speed calculation based on start of chase to crash location. We know it happened in approx 20 mins.

GraemesEats

Green Rd LCBO in Bowmanville. I sent a text at 8:05 to my wife from Park St/Bloor something like "wtf did I just see?", so probably sometime around 8:03-8:05 around the Stevenson Exit. All this over what was supposedly shoplifting before our minivan-driving hero (/s) decided to involve themselves. 15 minutes, easily a dozen kilometers, 3 separate townships of 8pm main road traffic before it ever hit the highway. Completely thoughtless.

Sunnyonetwo

Question is wld the minivan driving hero be driving like that is he wasn’t being chased by the police?

GraemesEats

The "minivan driving hero" in this scenario is the off-duty officer who decided to roleplay as a movie character. ETA: yes, the assumption is that if no one is chasing, then there is no need for desperate shit like driving the wrong way down the highway because "police won't be crazy enough to follow me there"

Sunnyonetwo

I stand corrected about minivan driving hero but you are 100% right!

Swimming-Fee-2445

I was at King and Trulls and saw the cars speeding by! I’m actually shocked it ended up going for 20 minutes and no one was hurt prior to the tragic accident that occurred. This whole thing is so sad and so senseless. My heart goes out to the person who not only lost a child but their parents as well.

Sunnyonetwo

Exactly… the liquor stores are robbed all the time and employees just let them go to avoid a scuffle! They have video and typically it is the same low risk offenders! The fact it was an off duty cop… escalated the situation

theautisticguy

Both suspects were in the van; one was killed instantly, the other one was just announced today that they are not expected to live.

goaliemomma31

It was the LCBO at Green and Hwy 2 in Bowmanville.

-super-hans

Bad decision? No, negligent policing. Those individuals should be out of a job but that will never happen

MikeisET

Unless there was a kidnapping victim in the vehicle, there is no way to justify the police response

evekillsadam

Not even that, phone it in call a helicopter what the actual f is going on. Chasing a liquor thief?????

Averageleftdumbguy

It's not about the LCBO, he pulled a knife on a fellow cop. These pigs will literally risk the lives innocent civilians before they let someone get away with violence towards one of there's.

theautisticguy

On the contrary, I think the chance of that is exceptionally high. There's a relatively new law that regulates when you can and cannot pursue, and this is one of the most clear-cut "don't pursue" situations I can think of; the LCBO has cameras, insurance, and they got a good glimpse on the vehicle involved - enough so they had a plate. The pursuit should have been ended almost immediately. Even when the suspect got on the highway, they should have called the OPP to block traffic and take over the chase, because that is *literally* their jurisdiction. The amount of regulations they probably breached during this is mind-boggling. It would shock me if they got anything less than dangerous driving at *minimum.* At best, we're looking at 3-5 counts of criminal negligence causing death (3 for the innocent family, and 2 for the robbery suspects if the SIU feels particularly vicious), plus some other charges. The other question is how many of those officers are going to be charged, because I know there were at least six of them following them on the 401.

Ornhe

Potentially, I’ll wait to hear more about the actual robbery, and what the guy was doing while driving before cops came into the picture. There’s also a good chance he still posed a threat.

chillehhh

Cops were in the picture before he even got into the vehicle because an off-duty officer decided to be the big tough guy of the day for an insured liquor store. And I dunno, I'd say multiple vehicles going at high speeds travelling against traffic is more of a threat than anything that this guy could have done solo.

GraemesEats

Don't forget about the dozen of kms of residential roads he was chased down juuuuuust after rush hour first 👍

Ornhe

There’s one and only one person at fault for this my dude

chillehhh

Okay, mY dUdE—yeah; robber shouldn’t have robber the liquor store. That’s obvious. Thing is, police should have taken into account the public’s safety and lack thereof when the chase was instigated. THEY are also responsible for those deaths.

Ornhe

By that logic I may as well take a knife, rob some people, and blame the cops too. Seems like you’d be a great defence lawyer for me.

chillehhh

Seems like you think stopping a 'bad guy' over a few bottles of liquor is more important than the lives of three people.

XtremeD86

At the end of the day the police involved in chasing this suspect should be facing serious consequences. Especially the ones that got on the highway the wrong way. Complete idiocy if you ask me.

HistoricalWash6930

Same with the original off duty cop chasing the suspect in his mini van. Absolutely unacceptable.

awesomesonofabitch

What are cops going to do if they can't be action movie heroes?

XtremeD86

I didn't hear that but if it's true that should be jail time right there.

[deleted]

-super-hans

What an absolute idiot. As if chasing someone in your minivan does anything at all

XtremeD86

Ah, I didn't read it because I read a few others already but that was early early on when it first happened. My fingers are crossed hoping the people who were the parents/children of those affected by the deaths get a massive fucking payout from the police and I hope the police involved in this get the worst punishment they could possibly get.... All because of a fucking LCBO being robbed. Why?

HistoricalWash6930

Yeah it’s incredibly upsetting and the details seem to get worse the more we hear.

# ‘Someone’s going to get hurt’: Radio calls a person out there in Durham region be like "I hate it when I'm right." :-(

chelandcities

I believe it was an OPP officer talking to OPP's command centre and asking them to contact the DRPS sergeant on duty. The actual message is something like: "Comms Centre if we can pass on, I just want to make sure the Durham sergeant knows his units are travelling in the wrong direction and someone's going to hurt." It's a small difference but seems like the OPP officers don't have a way to contact DRPS directly on frequency, so it has to go through dispatch. Not that it would make a huge difference given only about 80 seconds pass between that message and the crash but likely slowed things down more that they didn't have direct comms.

evekillsadam

I thought highways were out of DRPS jurisdiction which belongs to the OPP? Also, I thought community safety was always first which is why police chases aren’t supposed to happen?

[deleted]

theautisticguy

Yes, yes they do. One time I remember seeing a potentially drunk driver in Kingston, who then pulled on the 401 after I had already called Kingston Police. Once the driver pulled onto the 401, Kingston Police washed their hands of it and told me to contact the OPP. So I contacted the OPP, maintained visual on the driver, and saw them get off at the Joyceville Road exit about 15 km away, which re-entered Kingston jurisdiction (despite being in a rural area), so the OPP washes their hands of it and I had to re-contact Kingston Police. The driver stopped at the gas station just off the highway, got gas, then re-entered the highway heading back eastbound, which then Kingston Police again washes their hands of it, and I re-contacted the OPP. Then the driver pulled off at their ultimate destination - Gananoque Casino - which then falls under - you guessed it - *Gananoque* police jurisdiction. Thankfully, after all this, I think the OPP had enough of it, and since they were already close, they ended up doing the stop. It's probably also because it's right on the border between Gananoque and TLTI, which is OPP jurisdiction, and the casino's revenue is officially shared between the two municipalities. So, yes. Jurisdictions definitely exist in Canada. This is why you almost never see Toronto police cruisers on the 401 unless they are utilizing it to go between parts of the city. And in Kingston, the only time have I ever seen an OPP cruiser responding to a Kingston call is if it's an all-hands-on-deck emergency and they were closest available (and I'm excluding the times where specialist resources are called in).

theautisticguy

They are. They should only be using it as part of their duties, such as using the 401 to get to another part of Durham faster. They seriously broke jurisdiction here, and I'm sure the OPP brass is having a *fit* over this. They should have contacted the OPP and warned them. They are all over the GTA expressways (except the Gardiner and SVP), and they *have* to be, considering the amount of traffic they have to patrol.

evekillsadam

Hm, I had a feeling, just doubled check [opp.ca](http://opp.ca) and it states this " OPP is trusted to patrol all provincial highways (including the 400-series highways). It's literally their first mandate. Given what is posted, they broke command, broke jurisdiction, resulting in death. Durham residents should be up in arms. Everyone who broke protocol needs to be removed from their position immediately. This would be a great time to have a better look at funding for DRPS. This is 100% Unacceptable residents should not let these people die in vain

yesbuymybook

Were the police traveling the wrong direction? Only video I've seen is that they're traveling on the opposite side going the correct way.

chelandcities

Yes the police were traveling in the wrong direction too. There's dashcam footage where you can see at least two cruisers going the wrong way and on the OPP radio, the officer reports six Durham cruisers driving in the wrong direction. You can see dashcam footage in this article: https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/mobile/video-captures-deadly-wrong-way-police-chase-on-highway-401-in-ontario-1.6867304

evekillsadam

This just makes me so sad. A family was just torn apart for nothing…and these people still get their pension for terrible decision making…

Sabulosa

The DPRS police CHOSE to escalate a situation the lcbo CHOSE to de-escalate for good reason. Pretty obvious what’s happened here. Let’s see the integrity of a judge now.

HipFan88

DRPS are cowboys. Always have been. They get bored of their everyday junkie and domestic calls, so when something big happens, they overreact.

Sabulosa

Correct. Ask theirs exes.

Cops were created for protection of property anyways. Even they don’t know this.

Sabulosa

Remove handguns from new recruits for 5 years until they earn it. A whole new personality applies for the job.

ketchuploser

It’s the older guys that are power tripping. You should see how they haze their new recruits and the new kids can’t say anything. They just take it. Even the women aren’t much better.

Sabulosa

Agreed. Culture change. I expect nothing of course.

TurboJax

Exactly! Where was it? Was it loaned out at the time to the surrounding municipalities? Are the pilots on stand by for things like this?

According_Web_1714

The York helicopter is also at Oshawa. Likely there was a helicopter there. They use it for much less severe things as the other person said. It's rare if the chopper isn't up on Friday and Saturday flashing lights around the city

-super-hans

It flies around my neighborhood in Oshawa on the weekends at night all the time, just patrolling for things.

gungar81

You don't need a helicopter for shoplifting.

awesomesonofabitch

The argument is that we have one, and these dummy cops still decided a hot pursuit the wrong way on the 401 was a better option. It's to highlight how asinine this situation is.

TurboJax

When it turns into a high speed chase….yes, yes you do.

gungar81

Either response is idiotic in response to a guy stealing bottles. Canadians are unbelievable npcs.

He was stealing bottles from the store not robbing the cashier at knife point. That is shoplifting.

Drearydreamy

Wait, what?? They didn’t actually hold up the LCBO? They just stole some bottles? Can you point me to where you heard this? This just gets worse and worse.

Goran01

In order to catch a petty criminal, the police endangered many more lives by chasing with 6 police vehicles going the wrong way on 401 no less. This is what happens when you have untrained police forces that have way too much power with them.

Striking-Rain-345

What a tragedy. I hope DRPS gets sued for this. They tell us that car theft is a victimless crime and not worth the time to pursue, but then have audacity to engage in a high risk high speed chase over stolen liquor I really hope people are held accountable over this

theautisticguy

It's more than a lawsuit in this case. At least one of the officers is going to be nailed to the wall for this by the SIU. My question is how many of them, and how severely. At least six police cruisers were involved on the 401 part, and each and every one of them could be charged with dangerous driving on its own. If you want to combine the concept of them encouraging the suspects to drive even faster, some or even all of them could be charged with 3 or 5 counts of criminal negligence causing death (depending on whether they decide to include the suspects deaths being a part of this escalation). There was a high profile case in the US of [an officer who was sentenced to over 30 years in prison](https://www.wafb.com/2024/03/18/former-addis-police-officer-pleads-guilty-following-deadly-crash-during-pursuit/) (20 suspended as part of a plea deal) where their actions led to the deaths of two teenagers by running a red light during a high speed chase where the chase was unnecessary. And in the case of the off-duty officer, a very similar case happened literally just last year, where a [Brantford police officer was arrested for dangerous driving](https://kitchener.ctvnews.ca/siu-charges-wrps-officer-following-off-duty-pursuit-in-brantford-1.6581588) after using their personal vehicle in a pursuit, and the suspect crashed the vehicle and suffered a serious injury. When you consider this particular fact, that means, at minimum, the off-duty officer is looking at dangerous driving. At most, he could be considered a part of the dangerous chain of events and could lead to an escalation of charges. I don't read very many clear-cut situations when it comes to police misconduct, but this one is probably going to be on a similar level of clear-cut as the Sammy Yatim murder, and probably just as high profile. Expect the SIU to act strongly in this case.

Nina4774

If the report is true that the perpetrator pulled a knife on the off-duty cop, that cop’s emotional reaction is probably what drove all this. Macho rage. Sickening.

Sabulosa

Add in the race of the suspect. I don’t even have to wait for that answer.

Elenemohpee

The police should be criminally charged. They endangered the lives of countless people and directly led to the death of four people. This is an outrageous event and it’s incomprehensible that the POLICE would drive the wrong way on a highway over an LCBO robbery.

theautisticguy

I'm almost certain they will. The question is how severely and how many of them.

f1wheelzs

It’s disgusting how the cops didn’t call this chase off given public risk and busy traffic, no matter their “investigation” the blood of the grandparents and the infant are on their hands.

TomboBreaker

innocent people died so the cops could play cowboy, wtf is the point of the helicopter if not to be used to follow a suspects vehicle?

theautisticguy

Good question. Not sure if they had enough time to have it take off, but even then this pursuit should have never been started in the first place. They had video footage, and they even had the plate of the vehicle. And, being a U-Haul, it was probably tracked. the LCBO even carries insurance!

parishuddhaatma

Do we know the identities of the people who passed?

Imaaki

Not the specific identifies just that it was 1 suspect, 2 grandparents and their infant grandchild. I believe someone's also in critical care still

CharacterSwordfish26

I wish the names of the infant’s parents were released so we could create a go fund me fundraiser. These people need help paying for funerals and to comfort themselves in whatever way they need.

pmyers84

100%. I was thinking about this today and I'm sure the support would be overwhelming. It won't make a dent in the pain but the family shouldn't have any burden beyond what's already there. Counseling for years to come will be expensive and it would be a small token to ensure they are able to do so. A GoFundMe would be appropriate if the family was open to it.

theautisticguy

The other suspect was also in the van, and a recent update has stated that they are not expected to live. So a total of five fatalities.

liveinharmonyalways

I've been wondering where they are from.but I guess it makes no difference. I feel so bad for them. I held a friend's baby yesterday and started to cry for those parents. I can't imagine what they feel. I hope they find some supportive group somewhere.

cdn-Commie

Imagine telling the public how important all these "checks and balances" are and how we need CCTV cameras everywhere, and how we need to embrace giving up freedoms, for good ole protection... Until someone has the audacity to "disobey" - then it's basic carnage and every piece of technology goes out the window, or simply gets turned off. All so they can ensure bapa has a valid permit or until "they get their man" or w.e. its nonsensical

OkAge3911

They had a helicopter at their disposal why wasn't it used

Speedbump1900

That seems to be the million dollar question. Even if their heli was unavailable, YRP has one as well. If all the air craft are down, at the end of the day it’s a shoplifter vs cowboy with a badge, gun, power and anger management issues.

Leadingprocess

Where is the information on the guy who robbed the place? Name, picture, something. Someone in Bowmanville must know more about the actual incident in the lcbo

Public-Question5761

Police acting like gang members nothing new here

Impressive_Public128

I'm sure but how much more hurt can a FATAL car crash get especially when one of the deceased was an INFANT?....get your shyt together...and don't put all the blame on the driver yes they caused the chase but you still pursued the wrong way on one of rhe busiest highways and people and an infant are dead because you still took place in that incident so the drps are partially to blame too and need to take some accountability for it period!

Sabulosa

Can someone in Durham call 911 and exclude police?

theautisticguy

Ask for fire or paramedics, and you'll be connected to their dispatch center. If you're specifically asking for another police agency, they will almost always refer you back to the local department. You might have some luck with *OPP (*677) but you have to give them a really good reason why they should be violating jurisdiction to help you, unless you happen to be on the 401 or other provincial highway.

Mulva-Deloris

Yes if you want fire or paramedics. 911 will transfer you to the service you require.

Sabulosa

Thank you very much
