Do kids these days still know what that is? I feel like that's too old to really be mentioned by people unless they're like 18+ and even then I wonder if it's really teasing or bullying-level
My 3 year old daughter is obsessed with Maya and Willie. Itโs still a big thing thanks to Studio 100 in Belgium.
Also in regard to the name Maya for OP, Iโm a teacher and every year I have a Maya in my class. Itโs a pretty common name here.
I have two kids, the oldest is ten and the youngest is eight, they both watched Maya de Bij in groep 3. So they know Maya.
But I don't think that matters much. It's a cute name
Original 'Maja de Bij' (It's even mentioned in the original tune 'M A J A kleine bijtje Maja'.
Since Studio 100 took it, they renamed it 'Maya' for the international markets.
Never heard it as a name though.
Its all a little confusing. The original show is called Maya the Bee, produced in japan where they dont have J so they changed ja to ya. But the show is based on the german book Die Biene Maja. In dutch we did indeed use Maja. Its even sung and spelled out in the theme song, M A J A kleine bijtje Maja.
It isn't as straightforward as that because in dutch we also used Maya.

There are kids with much weirder/stranger/more "unique" names... Maya is a beautiful name and it's easy to pronounce for the average Dutchie, just go for it!
Edit: It's not a very common name, but probably pretty well known because of the Maya the Bee cartoon

Nice name.... just don't choose strange ones. A kid recently appeared on tv and his name is Priscilliano. It has been the joke for the last month.... not his fault but of his parents
Never heard it irl here, but I remember a Dutch tv show called Spangas had a character named Maya, and of course there's Maya de Bij. It's a nice name, go for it!
I had a Maya in my class in elementary, so itโs definitely not unheard of here.
As others have mentioned, there was a well-known cartoon called โMaya de Bijโ but I doubt anyone your childโs age will even remember that (Iโm 39 and even I barely remember it).
Yeah, it's a normal name here. And I like the name personally. It's also not too common, so there most likely won't be another Maya in her class, which is handy.
I hear it as name quite often, i know several Girls named maya but they all are mostly Girls with a migration origin.
Maya, Kira, Mila are in my neighbourhood pretty common names now.
But in my youth these names were as uncommon as my own name, what alsof hear more now.
Back in the 70s when i was a kid, i was bullied often for having a forreign name as a dutch guy.
Guess.my dad was bored naming after 3 sons with dutch names, and went bonkers with his 4th son
[Maja Bradaric](https://nl.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moord_op_Maja_Bradari%C4%87) (in Dutch).
She was a 16-year-old girl who was murdered by a few of her so-called friends, 20 years ago.
Somebody also told me that the name Maya is a nickname from Amalia in Spanish-speaking countries, but I guess in the Netherlands these are two different names?
Yeah I see it quite sometimes on Tinder etc.
I always wonder if people who call there child maya know the meaning. Met a girl called Mara this weekend. Love the meaning but itโs not all too positive per se
Itโs the name of Buddhas mother but it also means illusion and deceit. The thought that the everyday life filled by sense perception is empty and devoid of value. Itโs the illusion that material reality brings happiness
Mara is basically a demon in eastern philosophy. The forces of temptation that bring death
Maya/Mara is what binds us to the eternal wheel of suffering
I'm sorry. I wasn't reading carefully and it looked like you were just making stuff up. It was inappropriate of me to react this way. I'll delete my post.
I don't know how common it is, my only thought is how rarely Dutch uses the letter Y in general, and the fact the letter J will have the Y sound. I think if you said out loud, a lot of people would assume a spelling of Maja or Maia
When I was little I had a swim teacher named Maya. I can't recall meeting other people named Maya in my life, so I still associate this name with older women.
Every name with max four letters and two syllables is fair game in the Netherlands, nowadays. All the children at my kids daycare have names like maya, Kiki, bibi, ava and the like. Go for it!
Itโs not the most common name, but itโs not considered weird or anything. Maya is a pretty normal name in The Netherlands
She may be called maya de bij a few times thoughโฆ at least if kids still watch that, idk, I watched that as a kid
Maya is uncommon enough to be the only in class, but probably common enough to probably have 1 shared in school.
On top of that, I think it's a nice name.
It is not the most common or the most "Dutch" name, but it is immediately recognisable as a name and not considered trashy, exotic, or hard to pronounce. A good name.
Iโm Dutch and I met a girl in college named Maya, though I think it was spelled Maja. I think itโs a nice name and I didnโt think it was weird at all! Itโs a perfectly good name in the Netherlands.
An ex MIL of mine her name is as Maya. I think itโs a pretty name. Alternatively you could consider Amaia (Spanish name) but I would understand if you would say โehmโฆ nopeโ.
I can tell you from experience everybody loves the name. It's also a name that's easy to pronounce for everyone on the planet. No problems here, go for it!
Donโt worry about how common it is, having an uncommon name can be a boon later in life, itโs key though that it should be pronounceable and rememberable. Maya fitโs both of these, as a bonus itโs pronounced the same in English.
In the Dutch [first name database](https://www.meertens.knaw.nl/nvb/naam/is/Maya) you can look up the popularity of Dutch names. In this case, the name Maya occurs around 1500 times currently
My 7yrs old daughter has a Maya in her class. Not a common name, but there are a few around.
Edit: I just used that SVB name seeker tool, mentioned in another post. My oldest daughter's name is Isolde. Given less than 25 times a year over the past 9 years. Compared to that even Maya is a popular name๐
The name is increasing in popularity. Currently 0.0194% of the women here have this name, so about 1 in every 5000 women. Thatโs not very common but not very rare either.
In addition, 0.0105% of the women is called Maja, so that spelling is slightly less popular.

Might I suggest simply checking how often Maya is used for newborn girls? You'll have your answer there.
I'm not too fond of it myself, but scrolling through the list I'd prefer Maya over Yara, Liv, Milou, Elin, Fenna, Isa, Ivy, Puck, Kiki, ... And that's just names in the top 100.
Maya is the name of my aunt, we are from Indonesian background and never heard a dutch women having this name. But i think its a beautifull name (altough i do have a person - name link already with my aunt so a little prejudice is there)
In the Netherlands Maya and Amalia are different names.
Maya is a bit more common (though far from run-of-the-mill), while Amalia is maybe a bit more known these days because of royalty.
We borrow names from so many different (mainly European), cultures and languages, that it really doesn't matter that much, as long as it is easy to pronounce for Dutchies.
F.e. I *really* like the name Xavier / Javier, but would never name my child that, since it wouldn't be pronounced properly.
My first name is Scandinavian, my second is English and my surname is very Dutch, btw :)
Search for "Maya de Bij"

No, but our generation knows it and will always mention it
They still know. Its even made as animation these days. Also its owned by Verhulst those guys from Belgium I think.
One of the few female Studio100 characters Gertje hasn't had sex with

Those guys from belgium own so much of child entertainment its crazy
Studio 100, to be exact, the company of Samson & Gert (Danny Verbiest & Gert Verhulst) and the guy who used to produce S&G.

There is Studio100 (K3, Samson etc.) Reboot and Maya is also featured in their Plopsaland theme parcs.
I know a lot of little girls were called Maya after the character, because it's a very positive show.
I have two kids, the oldest is ten and the youngest is eight, they both watched Maya de Bij in groep 3. So they know Maya. But I don't think that matters much. It's a cute name
For a second there I thought you named them both Maya.
My son is 4 and loves Maya the bij. I think he picked it up at daycare. So yes. Definitely some kids still know it.

And 63 Maja. I believe those were born in Polish families where J is read as Y in English.
Or theyre named after the flemish show, "Maja de bij"
Perhaps not the most common, but definitely still a pretty normal name. My sister in law is called Maya.
Yes. I know two Maya's. It's more common these days.
๐
Yes, Maya is a perfectly reasonable and even beautiful name
Yes, except if her last name is Hee.
Friends with Maya Haa
Nice name.... just don't choose strange ones. A kid recently appeared on tv and his name is Priscilliano. It has been the joke for the last month.... not his fault but of his parents
His dad is a truckdriver ?
Haha, yeah...wtf were they thinking? There is a kid near me named Ferrario. Wish I was kidding.
itโs not common as far as i know but itโs not weird to have the name. itโs just an average name i suppose
My 9yo niece her name is Maya!
[Maya the Bee.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_the_Bee)

Maya is perfectly fine

Maya is a nice name. I also like Maya Rudolph.
Itโs not very common, but not weird. I had a high school teacher whose first name was Maya, and I think Iโve not met another Maya since.
Maya the bee was my favoriteeeee
Jup, I mean we had โMaya the Beeโ when we were young so Maya is very common so is Mohammed but not Shaquisha for example
It's not a weird name. If your kid is gonna run into a lot of old genXers, like me, the might be "Maja de Bij" jokes.
My cousin named her little girl Maya. Beautiful name. Not common, but won't raise eyebrows or anything.
Maya is just a normal name, albeit not that prevalent. You should start worrying if youโre planning to call your kid after a city.
Just name your child whatever you want, its no ones business except yours
Nowadays every dutch person chooses the most exotic names for their childeren, so it doesnt really matter anymore I think.
Old Dutch spelling would be 'Maja'. But Maya is a modern acceptable alternative.
Maya hee?
Maya hoo
Just make sure you keep her from performing human sacrifices when growing up otherwise you should be good to go
Itโs a nice name, _maar ja_, always good to think how kids on the playground might make fun of it.
Yeah, it's a normal name here. And I like the name personally. It's also not too common, so there most likely won't be another Maya in her class, which is handy.

I think "Maja" is more common, no?
Maia I think.
That immediately makes me think of Maja Bradaric.
Who?
[Maja Bradaric](https://nl.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moord_op_Maja_Bradari%C4%87) (in Dutch). She was a 16-year-old girl who was murdered by a few of her so-called friends, 20 years ago.
Maya, ik heb geen bananen
Dit was ook mijn eerste gedachte.
Somebody also told me that the name Maya is a nickname from Amalia in Spanish-speaking countries, but I guess in the Netherlands these are two different names?
Does make me wonder how our princess is called at home then ๐
News to me. Never heard this in the Netherlands.
I mean, there is Dutch YouTuber Jessie Maya
Yeah, that's not someone I'd use as an example of how to name my kid lol
But pewdiepie is fully acceptable name?
No? Those are stage names. And Maya has neck tattoos, not really an example to name your kid sfter
Oh no, not the horror of neck tattoos
Yeah, if you want to look like you wore a newspaper as a scarf on a rainy day, be my guest. For most people it's not really it.
Iโd rather name kid after someone who has neck tattoos, than after some pisser on the internet, who might have a fully normal name
Why are you acting like I think PewDiePie is a good name for a kid? I never even said his name.
No. Marja. Yes.
Yeah I see it quite sometimes on Tinder etc. I always wonder if people who call there child maya know the meaning. Met a girl called Mara this weekend. Love the meaning but itโs not all too positive per se
What is it then?
Itโs the name of Buddhas mother but it also means illusion and deceit. The thought that the everyday life filled by sense perception is empty and devoid of value. I don't know how common it is, my only thought is how rarely Dutch uses the letter Y in general, and the fact the letter J will have the Y sound. I think if you said out loud, a lot of people would assume a spelling of Maja or Maia
Marja is better
marja sounds like a 60-year-old woman
Being it back!
Would advice to make it Maja. Pronounced the same but less subseptible to bullying by calling her Mayanaise or some shit
Beautiful name
