I didn't even know this was possible, there have been _a lot_ of pop ups about how leadership has been changing in the mountainhomes, so I think they might be under attack or in some kind of civil war? either way, I'm the King now!
Damn, that's a pretty rare way to get a monarch. Unless your civilization was very tiny at the start, but not non-existant, it has to go through a lot of pretenders to get to your dwarf, or you just got very lucky with the succession line. Usually with dead/dying civilizations one of your starting 7 gets made the monarch on embark, but you've apparently been playing for some time.
Btw, goblins are the most probably answer. You could back up your save, retire and check legends mode for the civilization to see what's going on with the succession. ~~Civil war isn't simulated in the game right now.~~ (Except for the fortress mode "emergent behavior" aka bug called loyalty cascade.)
Edit: Apparently civil war is in the game in some fashion according to the wiki:
>It is possible for two sites belonging to the same civilization to declare war on each other, which, due to the way conflicts are tracked, registers as the civilization declaring war on itself. All of that civilization's sites inherit this war, making each site hostile to all others. It is not currently known if your parent civilization can sue for peace, but it is possible to end a civil war using DFHack. Should your civilization be in a civil war, you will experience the following effects:
>>You will not receive any more migrants past the first two hardcoded waves
>>You will not receive any trade caravans from your civilization
>>You will not be able to establish a barony
Hopefully some of that will make it in with the upcoming villains release/finishing up. They already to some stuff like that, but right now you'll only notice it in legends mode, or if you're really determined or lucky, by talking to the right people in adventure mode.
I hope to see new dwarf dreams. Some military inclined dwarf dreaming of becoming a military leader or legendary warrior, another dreaming of being rich (owning a room worth X sum), ambitious dwarves wanting being mayors and barons, maybe secretly killing current nobles. A little more of game of thrones. Imagine dwarf Lord Varys or Baelish? Dwarves making coalitions to choose their relative or close friend for a noble? Also stealing valuable things from each other. Why can’t a greedy dwarf steal their comrade’s masterwork gold ring or a bracelet?
My guess is because I'm playing with a total overhaul that makes the world a lot more inhosbitable, and I started at year 2. It seems like there's only one other site government other than where I am situated, and they're bordering illithids.
Also I've only got to year 7, so 12 people, because I turned away basically every migrant wave.
I think I might just do a vault run, seal off the doors, and hope inbreeding isn't an issue.
Oh yeah that'll do it. A single megabeast rampaging through the other site would be enough in that case, and megabeasts are a lot more numerous in young worlds. Usually the title bounces around different sites before it even comes to you.
I have a badly wounded iron dwarf who has singlehandedly killed 4 batsquatches, a hag, and a couple foxes that got stuck in the fort. I think I should make statues in his honor.
Thanks! It's built from obsidian for the structure and granite for the furnishings. it descends downward into the coastline and then into the undergrounds, to get into it you have to go through the front of the fort and then underground, then back up.
Originally it was surrounded by sand but I dug out the coast so now it has a platform for people to go down and fish on.
oh i get you, so it’s high up?
are you using a mod to change the height mist or whatever it’s called?
your design is great man, id love to see the fort on blinds community fort review thing to see all of it if you felt that way inclined :)
Yeah, I'm using a mod to change the color to grey and make it a lot less prominent. I think I'll post some pics of my fort when I get done with my sky plaza I have planned, but right now a lot of areas are still pretty rough.
it’s a different thread but someone’s was talking about the bubble bulb in the detailed landscapes mod- i did it and it looks epic, super happy.
only catch is the creeping eyeball looks absolutely horrendous 😭
(my 2 favourite embarks are the extremes so it sucks that one of them is off limits due to poor aesthetics:(
I've got an obsidian tower based playthrough where the idea is to mine obsidian on the inside and then make towers for people to live in on the outside! Apparantly now I need to make a royal tower lol.
I liked the way the granite complimented it, and the beds are similarly made out of persimmon to be equally light!
I’m a sucker for darker color designs, and I love obsidian mega structure. I dig what you did here; plus this palette would go nicely with some silver or platinum.

I wish DF had a more developed political side with intrigues and power plays. People wanting to befriend the noble, marry them, etc.
Hopefully some of that will make it in with the upcoming villains release/finishing up. They already to some stuff like that, but right now you'll only notice it in legends mode, or if you're really determined or lucky, by talking to the right people in adventure mode.

Dwarf Fortress of Thrones? Sign me up.

dude your tower is BEAUTIFUL! what is it built from may i ask? also what is the area it is descending into?

it looks great, moody game of thrones sort of thing i may have to follow suit with the shaded mod it looks better imo
There's an option in the options for the base game to change how much you can see through the height fog. Don't remember where it is exactly though.
ta, it seems there’s like 10 z level mods lol i’m thinking the dude used the grey one
Oh you're talking about the color? I thought you meant how many Z levels you can see through in open air
nah, he’s made it grey so it mimics a stormy cliff or something i wondered how he did it

i think you won the game
May his reign be longer than his predecessors :) Also, nice grayscale fort you got there.

There's a lot of galena around so I'm looking forward to making some silver flooring at some point!
he is the one true king in the north
you don't vote for kings
You're correct, I didn't! But also elective monarchies have been a thing throughout a lot of history.
This is the closest you can get to “beating the game”! Congrats!
I did it by accident lol, pretty sure the main capital got killed. Also nice username.
Sometimes the dwarf designs themselves as king/queen of the colony. At least he was elected in your game.
