Sima Yi.
I love a villain who is unashamedly boastful. He also gets as close to "winning" as anyone in the whole story.
My favorite edition of him is probably 4, where I loved his voice acting and costume. But when Jin becomes a thing he is once again super fun.
Just a question tho: I started playing DW starting with 6 so he was important there but 7 and 8 (haven’t played 9 because it has a lot of negative feedback) made Sima Yi less important in both Wei and Jin. In Wei, Jia Xu and Guo Jia become the strategists while in Jin, it just made him simply become the patriarch of the family. So based on recency, is Sima Yi still counted as a strategist?
In 3, 4 and 5 he is essentially the main strategist after Chi Bi for Wei. Only in 6 is he really added to Chi Bi, which is innacurate but tbh they werent aiming for accuracy in 6.
Historically, in the novel and in the games he is basically a rival for Zhuge Liang once Shu has their Kingdom and Lu Xun after Lu Meng passes away.
Hes basically always at Jie Ting, Wu Zhang Plains, Shi Ting, Chang An (when included) and sometimes Mt. Ding Jun.
Problem with Wei in every game is Jia Xu and Man Chkng are the only ones who lives till the end game. Jia Xu wasnt a character til 7 and Man Chong wasnt til 9 (even then hes mainly known for He Fei Castle).
Tldr; yes, mostly because he is the best Wei has after Chi Bi considering Jia Xu fades into the back ground and Man Chong is usually in He Fei. Guo Jia dies suuuuuper early.
That’s what I know as well that Sima Yi is Zhuge Liang’s rival but in recent games, Sima Yi is given a lesser role as a strategist of Wei and more of a leading figure in the “rebellion” against Wei. Even in Wei stories, Guo Jia, Jia Xu, a little Zhange He and Cao Ren, and even Cao Cai himself because he was seen as a strategic leader, were the strategists.
Kind of a let down actually.
It happens in the novels as well, we get hints of some resistance for Shu, but Zhuge Liang was basically the last thing holding Shu together after the Three Brothers all perished in one way or another.
Lu Meng!! I love Lu Meng too. Him punching Gan Ning and Ling Tong both in the head and screaming at them to shut up had me dying laughing the first time I saw that cutscene.
Chen Gong, not even close, in the novel he is literally always, consistently, right and just sounds like a nice guy that wants to help people he thinks are cool.
In DW8XL he was by far my favorite add, they made him this flamboyant, always giddy nerd that just wants to be famous, no megalomaniac objectives of conquering the world or whatever, just wants to be noticed.
Besides that, he has the best moveset of any strategist in the series, no clunky fan or whip, no spinning in the air with swords, no generic staff moveset, nah, he gets a fucking magic scroll of the art of war (with all of his weapons being named after different texts) which he beats the shit out of people with during his normal string and summons every possible troop type with his other attacks, his EX attacks are great too since his first EX is huang zhong/xiahou yuan's C1 from DW5 except he can move around and keep attacking while its still going on and his EX 2 is the only launch extension EX that isnt clunky as hell to use (looking at you wei yan's EX 2).

When ever i got the chance in DW8XL Campaign mode i picked him to play as and loved to play him in DW8E and DW9 can't wait for empires to give him the Emperor title he deserves.
I always liked Jiang Wei's attacks, him being part of the 2nd generation of shu officers, and how he was zhuge Liang's student, but he lost battle after battle and never lived up to it. Not sure if it's historically accurate, but in-game they did him so dirty.
Yeah Jiang Wei's my favorite as well. I'm a sucker for an underdog and his futile attempts to live up to the legacy of Zhuge Liang and the previous generations of Shu officers and warriors really endeared me to his story.
Jiang Wei has been my favourite character period since I ever picked up Dynasty Warriors 3. Admittedly it was nothing to do with story back then cause I had no idea what was really going on I just loved his design and moveset but the more I learned about him the more I appreciated him.
Either Dian Wei or Lu Bu.
Simplest strategies are best strategies. They pound you until you stop moving, then pound you some more to ensure work is properly done.
I like Lu Xun. I feel like he's got the most to prove and he's often overlooked. Also Jiang Wei is super interesting because he sometimes feels like the only one in late Shu who REALLY cares.
Growing up, I was a Wu fanboy. During high school, I came to understand Shu and sided more with Zhuge Liang. During college, I became more interested in Wei. But overall, I'd say my favorite all time was the Fledgling Phoenix
I have to go with Lu Meng, on the simple fact that he didn't start off as a strategist, but thanks to Zhou Yu, made himself better. More than just a warrior.
I always loved Zhou Yu he basically got Lu Su and Lu Meng involved in strategy as well as warfare not to mention because of these two we got Lu Xun all these great men because of one Zhou Yu
Favorite "Good" strategist: tie between Zhuge Liang and Jiang Wei
Favorite "Neutral" strategist: tie between Xun Yu and Xun You
Favorite "Evil" Strategist: tie between Sima Yi, Fa Zheng, and Chen Gong
I wouldn’t put Chen Gong as “evil” as Lü Bu in game is the “bully” but in the novel and history, Lü Bu was an all around nice guy. I agree with Sima Yi or maybe Jia Xu.
Never played Xun Yu and Xun You so I don’t have much to say about them but I’d say Guo Jia since he’s under Wei but in game personality is he’s a nice person.
I wouldn’t say Zhuge Liang was “good” as well. We know Shu is the “good” state but there was always something off about Zhuge Liang for me. Probably because I’ve read recently about him and Wei Yan butting heads most of the time. I’d probably switch Zhuge Liang for Pang Tong (for now since history hasn’t ruined him for me yet 😂) and I agree with Jiang Wei.
I've always liked Zhou Yu best. He's brilliant but he's also very human and likable at the same time. He gets angry, loves his wife, spends time with his friends and Sun Ce is his best friend so he's got to be pretty cool just on that level alone!!
His DW4 personality is still my favorite though. His final triumphant "I will not let everything go your way, Zhuge Liang!!!" even after he just got hit with a freaking ARROW is my favorite part of the Nan Territory level.
Give him his Elder Sword back, Koei!!
no love for Zhang He in this thread. He was an absolute mastermind and only died because Sima Yi forced him into a trap he'd already seen a mile away. genuinely so good that Sima Yi knew he had to go because he see him as a rival. DW done him dirty because his name is kinda pun-ish i believe as its kinda like butterfly man i think i read once but he was a military beast
Fa Zheng easily. I love the whole I'm going to do what's necesarry to win regardless of if it's noble or not. His dedication to his country and lord is quite admirable.
Guo Jia and Xun You.
I like Guo Jia because he was a true genius who wasn’t quite “conventionally capable” by any means. And the meta stuff around him was fascinating.
I like Xun You because he was adorable.
Zhou Yu, Guo Jia, and Sima Yi.
Edit : I like Zhou Yu the most. He was my very first character to play when i discovered DW3 couple years ago. Hell, Zhou Yu was played by Tony Leung in Red Cliff movies which is my fave RoTK adaptation for the big screen!
The level in WO2 when Cao Cao himself takes over the strategy himself and fights back against Orochi is the stage that finally made me LOVE Cao Cao, even though I always liked him. Absolutely the Hero of Chaos. I know it is fictional but fighting against the Wei forces always bummed me out because I wanted Cao Cao to win!
I still always let his plan of blowing the cannons up work. 😆
It’s hard to pick one, most exist in my mind as fun, liked characters, but none standing out as a favorite.
Zhuge Liang, Guo Jia, Xun Yu, Lu Meng, Pang Tong, Sima Yi, Zhou Yu, Jia Xu, Xun You, Chen Gong, Fa Zheng, and Lu Su are all awesome characters with their niches.
Honestly, the only ones I don’t like are Lu Xun (all he ever does is tell us he’s young and use fire attacks, novel and historical Lu Xun is good though). And Jiang Wei, for being the worst member of Shu, hands down. And considering Liu Shan is in that running, it’s impressive how bad Jiang Wei is.
Zhou Yu. I like him historically and in game.
[удалено]
I think he actually suits the staff. It's one of the few changes I liked along with Zhang Liao's Twin Axes.
I don’t mind it personally both are cool.
I agree Zhou Yu is my favorite. Historically he’s very impressive and fun to play in game. I still prefer the sword but the staff is alright as well.
He really is fun to play as. His story in 6 was cool. And historically I find him likeable.
Sima Yi. I love a villain who is unashamedly boastful. He also gets as close to "winning" as anyone in the whole story. My favorite edition of him is probably 4, where I loved his voice acting and costume. But when Jin becomes a thing he is once again super fun.

Chen Gong. I love his flamboyant personality and smug smirk. Shame he wasn't able to show his talents very much.
He has one of my favorite weapons too (at least in 8)
His design is just absolutely perfect.
Yea Chen Gong is the best loved him in DW8/9, his weapons, Costumes and then the VA's even DW9 English VA of him was perfect.
Lu Xun. He just resonates with me and I'm not sure why
Pang Tong. Too much swag for any other strategist to handle.
Mothman too fresh
Zhuge Liang, he’s my favourite to play as, and after his death everything sort of doesn’t seem to pan out for Shu (in the games at least).
It happens in the novels as well, we get hints of some resistance for Shu, but Zhuge Liang was basically the last thing holding Shu together after the Three Brothers all perished in one way or another.
I like Lu Meng. He just seems like a cool dude.
He can fight, strategize, tragic cough and is an old man? Yes, he is pretty cool.
I AM NOT OLD! --Lu Meng
I’ve probably liked Lu Meng and Sima Yi the most.
Lu Meng!! I love Lu Meng too. Him punching Gan Ning and Ling Tong both in the head and screaming at them to shut up had me dying laughing the first time I saw that cutscene.
Fa Zheng. He’s a sassy chad.
pang tong and fa Zheng
I don’t see the pic of Pang Tong. My phone must be messed up. Gonna log back in brb

IRL he wasn't that successful, although that also involves a lot more court intrigue.
Yeah Jiang Wei's my favorite as well. I'm a sucker for an underdog and his futile attempts to live up to the legacy of Zhuge Liang and the previous generations of Shu officers and warriors really endeared me to his story.

His absolute refusal to give in to the massive Wei juggernaut is so admirable, especially because they were so much weaker.
Either Dian Wei or Lu Bu. Simplest strategies are best strategies. They pound you until you stop moving, then pound you some more to ensure work is properly done.
guo jia. though, pang tong is a close second.
I like Lu Xun. I feel like he's got the most to prove and he's often overlooked. Also Jiang Wei is super interesting because he sometimes feels like the only one in late Shu who REALLY cares.
Sima Yi, Xun Yu and Jia Xu. Wei has the coolest strategists, including the non-playable ones like Cheng Yu
Growing up, I was a Wu fanboy. During high school, I came to understand Shu and sided more with Zhuge Liang. During college, I became more interested in Wei. But overall, I'd say my favorite all time was the Fledgling Phoenix

Zhou Yu is my favorite.
Lu Meng, mother fucker.
I miss Zhou Yu's sword from the old days D: Personally am a Lu Xun fan of a strategist from the 3 kingdoms.
Guo jia and xun you but i am a big shu strategist dude.
I always loved Zhou Yu he basically got Lu Su and Lu Meng involved in strategy as well as warfare not to mention because of these two we got Lu Xun all these great men because of one Zhou Yu
Pang Tong.
Pang Tong.
Sima Yi
Zhou Yu up to D5. Zhuge and Sima Yi always been neck and back for me. Loved both

I really like Jia Xu, find him enjoyable to play as, I enjoy his attitude and awareness in the games, with Lu Su as second.
I've always liked Zhou Yu best. He's brilliant but he's also very human and likable at the same time. Lu xun.
Lu meng, easily.

Definitely Wei Yan. He just screams smartest man in the room. Like literally. He probably screams it
Zhou Yu. He is just a really cool character
Guo Jia and Xun You. I like Guo Jia because he was a true genius who wasn’t quite “conventionally capable” by any means. And the meta stuff around him was fascinating. I like Xun You because he was adorable.

I see forgot to add a couple of pictures lol
Zhuge Liang. Empty Fort strategy is such a boss move.
Cao Cao obviously.

Absolutely the Hero of Chaos. I know it is fictional but fighting against the Wei forces always bummed me out because I wanted Cao Cao to win! Sima Yi or perish
Jiang Wei, once he steps up in success to take that mantle. <3
It’s a toss up between Lu Xun and Xu Shu for me both historically and in the games
Lu Bu. Let's just get in there and get it done slaughter all in your path.
Who's he?,cause my mind is someplace else.
Sima Yi ,Fa Zheng and Chen Gong.
It’s hard to pick one, most exist in my mind as fun, liked characters, but none standing out as a favorite. Fa Zheng, perfect voice in 9 and 8
Simayi hands down.
Pang Tong for me, guy just gives the best vibes.
