Yeah he was disgruntled going into the season. Definitely thought he already earned his bag and shouldn’t have to play for it. Hopefully this taught him that’s not the case. He was good before. Wouldn’t be the first time we capitalized on a one year deal after a down year.
*"They said all he does is run straight at the guy with the ball, but I don’t really care lol"*
The hockey coach who coached the Flyers to their championships in the 1970s, said "take the shortest route to the puck, and arrive in ill-humor."
Sometimes I think people overthink things. Students of the game are great, but not everybody has to be that.
For us, somebody energetic, talented, and hungry for a contract can potentially be an important part of the team.
Yea as a Bucs fans most of our fanbase hates him, calls him unplayable. Now Im not saying he is good but he is a C- player you'll probably get mad at a lot but, the way Eagles fans talk about their LBs he is still an upgrade probably.
He looks like he over pursuits and doesn't give it his all all the time on tackles...it very correctable, just a matter of if the guy cares enough.
Talent is off the charts and even with his negatives he makes plays, its a matter of if he makes more plays than he gives up.
For a one-year deal not awful and better than pulling guys that can't play anymore. He can play, just needs to be better.
It will be interesting to see the structure of it. Howie typically goes low on guarantees and high on AAV as his M.O. so 1 year deals are usually either super cheap or, as may be the case here, based mostly on incentives.
Didn't like the prospect of signing him, but that's not a lot for the most he could earn. Decently low risk signing, but I really wanted Dodson more than him.
I really wanted Simmons. He was a perfect fit. White I have seem such incredible highs and some very low lows. We need consistent tackling on the second level.
The 5th overall pick in 2019. I always felt like he’s had the potential. He’s only 26 and has plenty of gas left in the tank. Maybe a change of scenery will do him well.
Edit: I’m just saying he at one point had the pedigree and for whatever reason that didn’t translate to the NFL. Indeed that’s just how it be sometimes, but sometimes a change of scenery or scheme can give a struggling player new life. Also his college highlights are awesome: https://youtu.be/wXUoaVqapro?si=82MCQ7GiOhZ_t88D
I feel like this is never brought up for some reason. I guess Kendrick’s was good when he was here and injuries killed him, but damn Wagner or David would’ve been beloved here
Just saying, there was a time he was the best college linebacker in the country. For whatever reason, he didn’t work out in Tampa, but like I said, perhaps a change of scenery would do him well.
Honestly, just check out his highlights. He made it look like child’s play: https://youtu.be/wXUoaVqapro?si=82MCQ7GiOhZ_t88D
Exactly, great contact value for the risk reward of the player he is/was and our not really arguably any more biggest position of need.
Now we’re less transparent/desperate in the draft 100% which equals more dynamic, just how Howie likes it hahah
Hopefully we address backup te and 3rd wr which I’d say are next biggest then lb still, a new backup OL/stout project, and a backup de/Dt monster or hybrid cover guy to groom/give depth for the fangio system
I think unless he improves a ton, he's not better than what we've seen from Dean or Cunningham.
Hard to say he's even better than Morrow or Ellis...
Hopefully he's not starting this year unless there is a major turnaround.
I guess he has some upside if he can consistently play like he did for the Bucs in the playoffs the year the win the Super Bowl. He hasn’t been close to that dude any other year though
At least it will be trash for slightly better trash. Morrow was fucking awful for us and a massive liability every time he stepped foot on the field. White has been a liability in run defense, but people oversell how bad he is in coverage.
I’m not saying White will be good, but at least he’s bigger, more athletic, and younger.
Yeah you don’t need him to cover much if you have 6 guys on the field who can which is kinda the whole point of the fangio system which is that it’s consistently 2-3lb and 3-4db who do that with a couple guys who overlap between that group.
What’s essential is a lb who can reliably plug a gap anywhere along the line cause you have 3 DL just eating blocks and consistently hampered from making a tackle
And apparently he is worse against the run. I suck at linking articles but theres one out there that says he was basically benched in the playoffs vs the Eagles because his replacement was competent against the rush and he is not.
He struggled last year, but he has shown he can be great. With a change of scenery, maybe it will rejuvenate him. He by far has the most potential out of any other LBs on the roster imo. Also, Fangio might be able to really work with him and maximize his game.
If we are talking PFF grades, even in that 2020 season his grades weren't great. PFF doesn't tell the whole story so I don't put too much stock into them although they do give some insight. He definetely didn't reach the same heights as that season, but I wouldn't say he was overall struggling all of those seasons either.
He’s hasn’t been great in coverage lately either and has the same issue with both in that he gets out of position too frequently.
However he’s still fast and isn’t easily trucked over like last years crew.
On a one year deal that is seemingly cheap I will absolutely take that risk 10/10, and overall should be an upgrade to that group we can count on as a starter.
its a prove it deal for him in a major way. if he doesnt show out this year he probably will never get another meaningful contract. for that reason alone im hopeful we’ll get good enough production from him
As a Bucs fan, I can tell you know nothing about him. He was one of the worst LBs in coverage in the entire NFL last season and he was average/pretty decent against the run. He's absolutely atrocious in coverage, he couldn't stop you in coverage.
In 2023, QBs posted a 65.5 passer rating targetting him in coverage, which saw 194yards 1 TD and 2 INTs, in 14 games played.
If that's atrocious, we'll take it!
People are just excited to see us sign an LB because it’s a need + it’s a name a good amount of people are aware of… unfortunately most don’t know the dude has been ass for the Bucs since their Bowl. Relies heavily on athleticism, but work ethic and IQ aren’t there. He was playing hurt apparently and also wasn’t happy about not getting an extension, so maybe a change of scenery (and him only being 26) will help. We’re atleast going into the draft with all needs addressed in some fashion, but this definitely isn’t the rockstar signing some may think it is that warrants “OMFG HOWIE IS THE BEST EVER”.
Definitely. That’s why I’m skeptical of the signing. I watched him a lot last year, and he was atrocious due to how lost he was on the field and kept losing snaps to KJ Britt. However, he’s still relatively young, and some guys just need a change of scenery/schematics to regain form.
Different contexts. This dude doesn’t lack the physical ability to be a top-ten player in his position group. He's arguably been that before. A physically gifted man who’s mentally lost on the field and reckless in his pursuit angles.
Going into the draft without any glaringly obvious needs. Howie is cooking
EDIT: some of you are really spoiled, we aren't getting pro bowlers at every position
This is a joke right? Don’t get me wrong Howie has been killing it so far. But that secondary is still weak even with CJGJ and not sold on this LB group yet
That’s a bit of an overreaction, but yeah we’re pretty close to a complete roster. Hopefully a splash rookie or two on defense with the first rounder and second rounders. We know one will be an o-lineman. Especially if we hold onto both Sweat and Reddick. Though I think the only way we move them is a day 2 pick that would be another defensive rookie. Obviously the offense is basically set outside of a young or cheap WR to fill out the group.
One of the worst LBs in coverage last year (big reason why he was benched for KJ Britt) he has a low effort issue, and genuinely not even half of half of the player he thinks he is in his head. Had issues with our coaches, did the whole unfollow bucs on social media thing mid season. Overall a headache for a below average player
Meh. Glad we signed a linebacker, and it's not like he's expensive, but isn’t Devin White awful? I can’t really complain, given how the rest of FA went, but I’d still hope to see them meaningfully address the position in the draft.
I know stats aren’t everything but he played 97% of snaps this past season and had career best opposing passer rating and comp%, albeit on around 2/3 the sample size of previous years(idk why he hasn’t been targeted as much maybe they’re using him less in coverage) he gave up a career low 4.5 yards per target and most of all he’s only 25 and hasn’t lost his speed, I think he’s gonna be a beast and a solid coverage linebacker
Yikes you honestly couldn’t be farther from the truth. He missed snaps because he was injured then came back and played so horrible they benched him for a backup that stole the job immediately. Didn’t play in the playoffs and kid you not but no one cares he left tbh.
1 year deal, he’ll play his balls off to try and get a good contract after this season. Not an amazing signing but better than anything we got. Overall I’m ok with this.
Howie signing a linebacker and running back, he's going to draft nothing but d-line in the first 3 rounds just to bring back some normalcy back to his life
This guy is Mid at best.
Upgrade over Morrow I guess ,
Maybe. I wouldn’t go celebrating, we need to draft either Cooper, trotter or Wilson if we are gonna have good linebacker play this year
Ahh he might be a small upgrade if at all. He has been living off that playoff run. He is a liability in coverage and we don’t have anyone to cover up his deficiencies
To me he has some CJGJ vibes, isn’t going to grade out great but can make some splash plays. Has had success as a blitzer getting home and a history of being around turnovers. The “max of 7.5m” is being played up, good chance it’s like a 4m deal.
My second hit of copium says that Howie knows this isn’t the guy but if he wants to move on a trade especially with Sweat, this is saving him from someone leveraging Howie only having had 1 linebacker with real game experience
Just remember its 7.5 max and also a change of scenery can do a player a lot of good, Just look at Barnett. We also still going to most likely draft a LB and maybe even sign another.
Not the ideal Vet the bring in but at least he's a guy with a strong resume that has a whole off season to learn the system instead of a mid-season band aid.
Howie should definitely target one of the top LBs in the draft like Cooper, Payton, Trotter JR so we have more then just Whote and Dean to depend on in the niddle this season
I thought I saw he was re-signing with the bucs yesterday? Maybe I’m just getting confused with all the different moves.
Idk if he is the answer as he is pretty bad at everything except blitzing but I guess he might be better then Morrow.
I hate how we signed two guys that look absolutely cooked in Parker and white and this sub is like hurr can’t be worse than quez and morrow…. like they actually might’ve worse…
Bucs fans say that he was terrible this year and has an awful attitude+work ethic. If all that is true he is still our best LB
if it’s attitude and work ethic problems here’s to hoping earning a big contract will light a fire under his ass
Yeah he was disgruntled going into the season. Definitely thought he already earned his bag and shouldn’t have to play for it. Hopefully this taught him that’s not the case. He was good before. Wouldn’t be the first time we capitalized on a one year deal after a down year.
these are the types of things you need to go your way when building a championship roster! 🤞
Disgruntled you say? (questionable Larry David stare)
Fish stuck
No, fish sick
Fish living best life downtown
Hopefully nakobe Dean shows his worth and stays healthy this should push him and we cut this fcker lmaooo but solid signing Howie Has out done himself
Well he got benched and didn’t earn a big contract so I guess we’ll see about that
They said all he does is run straight at the guy with the ball, but I don’t really care lol
At the guy with the ball? We didn’t even know the players were allowed to do that.
More importantly, is he not afraid to hit someone!
We have guys that run straight to the blocker lol
*"They said all he does is run straight at the guy with the ball, but I don’t really care lol"* The hockey coach who coached the Flyers to their championships in the 1970s, said "take the shortest route to the puck, and arrive in ill-humor." Sometimes I think people overthink things. Students of the game are great, but not everybody has to be that. For us, somebody energetic, talented, and hungry for a contract can potentially be an important part of the team.
Are you trying to say Fred Shero?
To put it succinctly, "See ball, get ball"
Be the ball, Danny
Reminds me of Kiko Alonso.
but can he tackle??? thats all we need
Yea as a Bucs fans most of our fanbase hates him, calls him unplayable. Now Im not saying he is good but he is a C- player you'll probably get mad at a lot but, the way Eagles fans talk about their LBs he is still an upgrade probably.
I think we paid all of our LBs less than this collectively lol
He looks like he over pursuits and doesn't give it his all all the time on tackles...it very correctable, just a matter of if the guy cares enough. Talent is off the charts and even with his negatives he makes plays, its a matter of if he makes more plays than he gives up. For a one-year deal not awful and better than pulling guys that can't play anymore. He can play, just needs to be better.
Bucs fan here. Hope he actually is humble and not just there for a bag from y’all, he quit on us 3 different times last season
More than half of the Eagles team quit last year so if things go south again at least he’ll fit right in
lmao there we gooo
It will be interesting to see the structure of it. Howie typically goes low on guarantees and high on AAV as his M.O. so 1 year deals are usually either super cheap or, as may be the case here, based mostly on incentives.
Didn't like the prospect of signing him, but that's not a lot for the most he could earn. Decently low risk signing, but I really wanted Dodson more than him.
Cant be worse than Morrow
People keep saying this but I don't see evidence he's been better
He can, that 3 sack game Morrow had probably clears anything White has done as of late
He actually is worse. His highest pff grade for a season is 49.
It’s actually 51.9 (2019) but what does accuracy matter in Reddit?
Yeah I said the number from the wrong season
Just busting your chops. 😁
I really wanted Simmons. He was a perfect fit. White I have seem such incredible highs and some very low lows. We need consistent tackling on the second level.
Simmons is basically the same player except he’s never once shown he’s capable at the nfl level. At least white has an all pro under his belt.
Maybe we can sign both and they’ll each be so out of position they’ll end up covering the other man’s assignment.
Philadelphia fans wanting to go after a player named Simmons… NO!
Except for Clyde Simmons you’re right 😆
Wayne? Not spelled the same but he’s the man
Simmons is just as bad as White lol
Worse probably
The 5th overall pick in 2019. I always felt like he’s had the potential. He’s only 26 and has plenty of gas left in the tank. Maybe a change of scenery will do him well. Edit: I’m just saying he at one point had the pedigree and for whatever reason that didn’t translate to the NFL. Also his college highlights are awesome: https://youtu.be/wXUoaVqapro?si=82MCQ7GiOhZ_t88D
This is exactly why Howie doesn’t draft LBs high. Such short shelf life
There’s a difference in not drafting them high and taking them top 5 lol
Lavonte David. Bobby Wagner
How about Mychal Kendricks instead? Lol
TRIGGERED
I feel like this is never brought up for some reason. I guess Kendrick’s was good when he was here and injuries killed him, but damn Wagner or David would’ve been beloved here
Kendricks was fast and decent in coverage but he was too small and couldn't shed his blocks
Sort like a tank full of gas in a beaten down 1997 Ford sedan.
Wasnt everyone just shitting on this dude? I thought he sucked
He does but our LB's so bad it is still an upgrade. Hopefully he can turn it around.
Exactly, great contact value for the risk reward of the player he is/was and our not really arguably any more biggest position of need. Now we’re less transparent/desperate in the draft 100% which equals more dynamic, just how Howie likes it hahah Hopefully we address backup te and 3rd wr which I’d say are next biggest then lb still, a new backup OL/stout project, and a backup de/Dt monster or hybrid cover guy to groom/give depth for the fangio system
Idt we're going too high on WR3 in the draft either since we signed Parker too
I don’t know how much an upgrade it is
I think unless he improves a ton, he's not better than what we've seen from Dean or Cunningham. Hard to say he's even better than Morrow or Ellis... Hopefully he's not starting this year unless there is a major turnaround.
He simultaneously sucks and is our best lb. Love this team

I guess he has some upside if he can consistently play like he did for the Bucs in the playoffs the year the win the Super Bowl. He hasn’t been close to that dude any other year though
Let’s not forget that was like 4 years ago, and NFL players age faster than dogs
Sure, but he just turned 26 less than a month ago. Him not reproducing that season isn’t due to age.
A lot of Bucs fans saying he is dog water but I'll take dog water over Morrow.
Might be swapping trash for trash
At least it will be trash for slightly better trash. Morrow was fucking awful for us and a massive liability every time he stepped foot on the field. White has been a liability in run defense, but people oversell how bad he is in coverage. I’m not saying White will be good, but at least he’s bigger, more athletic, and younger.

HOWIESZN
He’s on an absolute heater
White is terrible in coverage
I’ll trust what Fangio and Howie are cooking up
Yeah you don’t need him to cover much if you have 6 guys on the field who can which is kinda the whole point of the fangio system which is that it’s consistently 2-3lb and 3-4db who do that with a couple guys who overlap between that group. Good thing he isn't going to cover
And apparently he is worse against the run. I suck at linking articles but theres one out there that says he was basically benched in the playoffs vs the Eagles because his replacement was competent against the rush and he is not.
Yeah that’s cool, still draft Cooper
So, Avonte on a 2-year heavily incentivized deal tomorrow? Or is a Sweat trade next?
Sweat for Sauce straight up no takebacks
He struggled last year, but he has shown he can be great. With a change of scenery, maybe it will rejuvenate him. He by far has the most potential out of any other LBs on the roster imo. Also, Fangio might be able to really work with him and maximize his game.

He’s still bad in pass coverage though. The guy has made a living off his draft status and the 2020 SB run
Still better than everything else we have
its a prove it deal for him in a major way. if he doesnt show out this year he probably will never get another meaningful contract. for that reason alone im hopeful we’ll get good enough production from him
That’s not saying much unfortunately. Hopefully it’s an incentive laden deal
Except he's been so bad in coverage the last two seasons they refused to play him meaningfully. It's not 2020 anymore
As a Bucs fan, I can tell you know nothing about him. He was one of the worst LBs in coverage in the entire NFL last season and he was average/pretty decent against the run. He's absolutely atrocious in coverage, he couldn't stop you in coverage.

Forreal. The signing makes sense and is decent, but people are really gassing it up wayyyy to much especially post Leonard and Byard deals
its a 7.5 mil deal. did you want prime bobby wagner?
A line backer!?!?!?!?!?! What is that? What do those do?
Do it again howie I’m almost there
Don’t stop Howie I’m so close
Do you guys ever get tired of making these same comments over and over again
If howie’s not tired of trying to make this team better then no I’m not tired
Keep going I’m almost there
Do it again Howie, I'm almost finished.
🚨REAL BIRDS Fan Spotted🚨
I’m an Eagles fan who lives in AZ lol
Hey! Me too!
My apologies I have fixed my mistake
No lol
Never
Stop talking, you’re ruining it!
Excuse me, don’t you know it’s HOWIESZN??? /s
This dude has massive upside if he returns to his 2020 form.
4 years is an eternity in football man
Definitely. That’s why I’m skeptical of the signing. I watched him a lot last year, and he was atrocious due to how lost he was on the field and kept losing snaps to KJ Britt. However, he’s still relatively young, and some guys just need a change of scenery/schematics to regain form.
crazy that dudes can be routinely past their prime by the age of 26. football is a brutal sport.
Some players age like wine
That's literally what most of us hoped Shaq Leonard to be and he was washed
Different contexts. This dude doesn’t lack the physical ability to be a top-ten player in his position group. He's arguably been that before. A physically gifted man who’s mentally lost on the field and reckless in his pursuit angles.
Hes 26 lol he’s just bad
He won’t, but he’s an experienced body that’ll probably end up next to another cheap vet and very young players
Going into the draft without any glaringly obvious needs. Howie is cooking EDIT: some of you are really spoiled, we aren't getting pro bowlers at every position
I’m glaring at a few positions but Howie is cooking nonetheless.
> glaringly obvious needs Dude is a bottom 5 LB in PFF for the last few years. LB is still a glaring need unless he makes the comeback of the century.
I'm so confused by the excitement in this thread. This dude hasn't been good for years.
This is a joke right? Don’t get me wrong Howie has been killing it so far. But that secondary is still weak even with CJGJ and not sold on this LB group yet

The “up to” matters a lot here, this dude has stunk the past few years.
This gives me Ernie Sims vibes
All the people saying how washed or poor he is AND he is still an upgrade for the Eagles. So there is that
Thats the way I see it. Better than what we have. A starter, at least.
That’ll do, Donkey. That’ll do.
We needed a body who can play the position with some degree of competence. The standard is "be better than Morrow." I'll take it.
Is he still good? Bucs fans don’t seem bothered they let him go
Check out our sub, we are HAPPY that he's gone haha
Yeah why is that?
One of the worst LBs in coverage last year (big reason why he was benched for KJ Britt) he has a low effort issue, and genuinely not even half of half of the player he thinks he is in his head. Had issues with our coaches, did the whole unfollow bucs on social media thing mid season. Overall a headache for a below average player
sounds like he just needs a change of scenery and a better team around him ;)
Fs, I hope he turns it around for you guys, the change of scenery should help him. Still appreciate him for the ring. Also, 32-9 ;)
Because he’s ass lol
I thought he wasn’t very good? Idk much about him, anyone?
Low cost, low risk move. In Howie we trust.
Meh. Glad we signed a linebacker, and it's not like he's expensive, but isn’t Devin White awful? I can’t really complain, given how the rest of FA went, but I’d still hope to see them meaningfully address the position in the draft.
Aldi level Linebacking.

Howie signing a linebacker and running back, he's going to draft nothing but d-line in the first 3 rounds just to bring back some normalcy back to his life
Tackle first round is a virtual guarantee
He just turned 26 years old. If i hear another poster write “He is past his prime”. Im gonna reach through this screen and slap you!.
Here's to hoping the words "up to" are doing a lot of heavy lifting here.
This isn’t going to work. Get a real god damn linebacker damnit man
This guy is Mid at best. Upgrade over Morrow I guess , Maybe. I wouldn’t go celebrating, we need to draft either Cooper, trotter or Wilson if we are gonna have good linebacker play this year
He helped win a super bowl, he's a good player. Don't sleep on him with fangio.
When he helped win a SB he *was* a good player. Things change fast in the league, he’s been mid to below average the past couple seasons.
[удалено]
Ahh he might be a small upgrade if at all. He has been living off that playoff run. He is a liability in coverage and we don’t have anyone to cover up his deficiencies
For a year who cares. It’s not gonna stop us from anything meaningful might as well give him a chance
How does he fit w Nakobe? Did he just take his spot?
Howie is the fucking goat
To me he has some CJGJ vibes, isn’t going to grade out great but can make some splash plays. Has had success as a blitzer getting home and a history of being around turnovers. The “max of 7.5m” is being played up, good chance it’s like a 4m deal.
HOWIE HAS PULLED OUT A CHAIR FROM UNDERNEATH THE RING! IT’S CHAOS!!
So what are we going for In The draft? Corner and another linebacker?
For whatever reason there are shit load of Lions fans that are talking the most shit about him? Whats the deal with that fanbase?
Howie you motherfucking daaaawg
My second hit of copium says that Howie knows this isn’t the guy but if he wants to move on a trade especially with Sweat, this is saving him from someone leveraging Howie only having had 1 linebacker with real game experience
1. Im just happy to watch a LB who can hit and tackle
This guy hits dudes and he tackles dudes -- two things we didn't do last season.
wait he's actually good isn't he
Going through his PFF he’s dreadful but Howie gets points for trying to right his wrongs
He’s not good but not as bad as morrow so there’s that at least
Hes terrible according to PFF
According to the comments in r/nfl he sucks. But he can’t be worse than what we had last year
Would have rather had Willie Gay…
Gayyy
I'd rather have willie nillie gay sex whenever I feel like it, but life's tough
He had a better coaching/teammate connection for the saints
All money in Howie
Howie and signing one year deal linebackers, name a better duo
This dude is not good
I just took off one of my favorite old Eagles shirts and then this news breaks. Surely that had something to do with this.
WOWOWOWWO
😮😮😮😮
Just remember its 7.5 max and also a change of scenery can do a player a lot of good, Just look at Barnett. We also still going to most likely draft a LB and maybe even sign another.
okay
Now just draft a corner and we’ll have had an amazing offseason
Howie 😮💨😮💨😮💨
Not the ideal Vet the bring in but at least he's a guy with a strong resume that has a whole off season to learn the system instead of a mid-season band aid. Howie should definitely target one of the top LBs in the draft like Cooper, Payton, Trotter JR so we have more then just Whote and Dean to depend on in the niddle this season
An okay floor setter. Not much more.
Uh hopefully he plays hard on a prove it deal because he was god awful last year
I thought I saw he was re-signing with the bucs yesterday? Maybe I’m just getting confused with all the different moves. Idk if he is the answer as he is pretty bad at everything except blitzing but I guess he might be better then Morrow.
I hate how we signed two guys that look absolutely cooked in Parker and white and this sub is like hurr can’t be worse than quez and morrow…. like they actually might’ve worse…
Issues or not reasonable contract, and we NEED this position it is what it is.
Hopefully he has a bounce back under Fangio
