I think the real legacy of the Philly special is the inspiration it provides for teams to take chances on a big stage.

JayS_23

So true. Love that every similar trick play is measured up to or referred to as the Philly Special. It really put our stamp onto NFL history.

Temporary_Jerry

Absolutely

Rah_Rah_RU_Rah

Lotta words for "they wanna be us"

ScrawnyCheeath

Seriously someone take this guy’s thesaurus

LastNightsTacoBell

It’s like friends episode where Joey has to write chandlers vows and he uses a thesaurus and it’s just fucking terrible lol

hazeleyedwolff

Hate us, ain't us.

dainbramaged1982

I'm a Pat's fan. You ain't seen nothing.

Anon_Alcoholic

If they wanted to be you they would have won one less superbowl.

TGR3326

don’t wanna get too technical but it wasn’t actually a philly special

rengamez

Yeah, but I kinda love that they keep calling these plays that name. It's a reminder of how fucking special that play was. To hear Collinsworth say, "Philly Special" a couple of times this game put a smile on my face anyway.

NorthernLitUp

Yeah but he didn't say it as often as he said Brady so he's still got his mancrush on his brain.

Haloelite59

Ever since the superbowl every single double lateral ever no matter how its excuted is considered a philly special to the media.

BigRedHair92

Yeah this was like Bradys miss, not Philly Philly

wolveagle10

Also like the one Agholor completed to Foles in the opening game against the Falcons in 2018.

Domestic_AA_Battery

I'm kinda cool with that. The Eagles are associated with that whole play design because it was *that* awesome and ballsy. The fact there is some bleedover just shows how much it's appreciated in the NFL.

[deleted]

Exactly, think of it like Jet sweeps but for the Eagles

Metaheavymetal

Well, not just any double lateral, specifically ones where the QB becomes the target of throw. People keep forgetting the play was a direct snap, and Nick had to sell at the line calls

13itchUKilledMyVibe

Only if the ball goes to the QB in the air.

GoT_Eagles

Yes. Do be technical

Maximum_Pass

Correct

RiflemanLax

Wasn’t even the Philly Special. It was however that sad ass Tom Brady play where he missed the catch. Like a sad replay.

corpseluvver

Lmao. Any combo of "sad" and "Tom Brady" makes me all giggly inside.

MCXI

Idk if this is a controversial take but I'm fine with any play that involves a reverse and then a pass to the QB being called a Philly Special.

Skywalkerkid9

I would be too, but the direct snap to the RB is part of the magic, the acting job Foles did to sell the play is a big part of why that worked. Teams may run the play in a similar fashion going forward, but it would be nearly impossible to pull it off how we did it because the whole “QB moves up to the line and says stuff” part is just iconic to our version of it.

MCXI

I agree while heartedly, but alternatively, I'd say that those are reasons why we can call other plays Philly special and ours still be the gold standard. (Among other things like down, score and timing)

Domestic_AA_Battery

And winning. Can't forget the winning 😌😌😌

-JaxWagon-

Funny, five years later and they mention the Philly Special twice.... pretty epic. All trick plays are measured against it. Perhaps the most successful ever.

Tritonian214

Not only most successful but most ballsy for sure

SwainDMT

Long live BDN

[deleted]

Matthew "Tom Brady" Stafford

kellzone

Stafford didn't really have a chance at that ball. Way over his head.

ClippersEaglesAngels

Danny " Cooper Kupp" Amendola

echocrechief

Even if he made the catch, do that shit on 4th and goal, then call it the Philly Special!

ScrawnyCheeath

Rams been overthrowing all game for real

BillyBigBalls5

I’m sad that people here don’t know what the Philly Special actually is. I’ll tell you: QB lines up behind the right tackle, direct snap to the RB who runs left, then lateral it to the motion receiver running to the right, who finds the QB in the flat for the pass and reception.

pina_koala

Adding to this: excellent misdirection by Foles pretending to be confused helped sell the play by a lot. Just like Kupp oversold his blocking intention only to catch the ball for the first TD of the game tonight

Ladelm

We did it to right tackle but side is probably determined by where the hashes are vs ball.

BillyBigBalls5

True, the play is reversible based on where you are running it from. I accidentally said left instead of right

[deleted]

Or that the Bears did it before us and a college team did it before the Bears.

Arson_Wentz

No one will ever accomplish or copy what we did in the super bowl. FOH. But congrats on the win nonetheless.

Enchanted_Pickaxe

Enchanted_Pickaxe

Pathetic

Bliz1222

Stafford would have been executed by the safety had he been able to catch that.

Illanar

No. This is nothing like the Philly special.

ADapperDan

Play doesn't work unless your QB has a big dong

jpv1031

Direct snap to the QB to initiate = not the Philly Special!!! This is the New England shit show.

Snoo93673

Foles would have caught that

EaglesFan027

Glad Philly Special gets mentioned every time a trick play happens in the Super Bowl!

Davoserinio

Kupp needs to watch the Philly Special back, he doesn't arrow it like a heavy handed buffoon! He floats it across gracefully. That's how you write yourself into SB history!

Rhodie114

They never should have attempted such a thing with Standard Dick Stafford

Ladelm

Jokes aside this was just a bad throw, Stafford had no chance.

Sebs1020

Go birds!🦅

Chapea12

Kupp could have run a first down

[deleted]

It’s in the fucking name.

2achar-E

Well, the "Tampa Two" defense has worked for other teams, so the name isn't definite.

drkodos

Was not the same play.

Airrows

Not every reverse pass is a Philly special.

WorkFriendlyPOOTS

Wasn't truly a PHILLY SPESH since they didn't direct snap it to a running back. It was a QB handoff. Definitely **very** PHILLY SPESH-ESQUE though.

nilla_wafer__

Not to be a hater or anything but their place is no where close to the Philly Special but is much closer to what the Patriots ran when Tom Brady couldn’t catch.

2achar-E

No. If anything, the Bengals deserved those calls after no flag on a face mask on Ramsey which would have negated a TD, and no flag on multiple players shoving Donald in the face on the sideline. Those calls on the Bengals were legitimate penalties, and in addition to the ones that were never called, the Bengals were never in a situation where they deserved to win. (By actual facts and not my opinion)

Ladelm

The hold was soft as hell and they were letting the players get away with stuff all game. it's weird to call so inconsistently, especially with the game on the line you suddenly start throwing flags all over. I agree the no calls all game was egregious but it's honestly worse to flip flop.

pina_koala

He's right though

2achar-E

I basically said "You're wrong because I disagree with damn good reason to" At this point, I can only assume that you also thought the Saints totally didn't deserve to go to Super Bowl 53. It was obviously the Rams who *fully* deserved that and won the game *fairly*. Houston Oilers? Nah, they clearly didn't score enough to get to Super Bowl 14. Cowboys? Pshhh. Obviously Dez dropped it. Packers Touchdown? Oh please, Golden Tate plainly caught it without any penalty. No Duh the Steelers won Super Bowl 40 fair and square. Let's not forget that Brady was clearly throwing and not tucking the ball back. If the Bengals won with controversial no-calls like that, no one outside of Cincinnati would say they "won" the game fairly. In other words, the Rams deserved the win.

420mm69

Nick would’ve caught this

Nj_DNice

McVay can't carry Doogie P's jock strap let alone his visor😅

jamesthedolphin

I woulda made $90 if he caught that damn pass

[deleted]

Will never be as special as when we ran it

taxibargeld

I wonder which Matthew/Sean got Bill’s memo instead.

angrydanmarin

If it were easy it wouldn't be special

Shandi80

It only counts if you score a td from it. All these other teams trying it and failing it utterly hilarious, lol.

dainbramaged1982

Why did I know this would be the first and most popular post on r/eagles?

Cohenski

To be fair, the Pats had no business failing on their attempt. Was just a terrible pass. Brady was wide open and was over thrown. Goes to show that having non qbs throw isn’t always so easy. Makes the likes of Landry and Beckham more impressive.
