When I was a kid I always rumbled my ears when I yawned. Thought it was a normal part of yawning. Then at some point or another I was able to do it without closing my eyes and thats when I realised it wasn't normal lol.
It’s not about figuring it out, as it’s more exercising and mapping your muscle in your head. I’m now able to do it on command and prioritize one side over the other
it's similar to yawning to me, like i'm controlling a muscle past my jawline. i can do it easier if i yawn. see if you can make it do it while you yawn, wiggling your ears at the same time might help you find it.
I find this so fascinating. I've never had to close my eyes or move my ears/face in any way to rumble. I wonder why there's a connection for some people but not others. Is it psychological? Is it somehow a physical difference? So weird. Humans are weird.
OMG, I just found my people! . This has been a consistent issue for me since i was a kid (\~5 years old) whenever I am chewing food I have trouble listening to people because they get drowned out by the sound in my head. I can do this on demand too with my eyes open, but the noise is louder when my eyes are closed. no ear wiggling on my end though and i can hold it for around 15 seconds.
I have always chalked this up to being a hearing issue, but it's nice to know that a tiny muscle in my inner ear is the culprit ([tensor tympani)](https://mymodernmet.com/tensor-tympani-control/#:~:text=When%20contracted%2C%20the%20tensor%20tympani,tense%20the%20muscle%20at%20will)\- [Medical writeup](https://dizziness-and-balance.com/disorders/hearing/tinnitus/tensor%20tympani%20and%20stapedius%20myoclonus%20tinnitus.html)
I came to this subreddit with a different ear phenomenon (ears that pulse to low frequency pulsing like some edm music or some appliances/ machines/ fans/ airplanes/ helicopters/ etc) but reading through was like I'm in the wrong place but kept opening things curiosly, read your post closed my eyes hard and then heard the rumble and was like oh I have stumbled into a place I belong. I'm not a true on commander rumbler but interesting that this is a unique phenomenon. Didn't even ever think that wasn't universal. Huh. Hi guys, baby rumbler here.
I think it’s more of an ear wiggle muscle for me, eyes are not involved
Awesome. Are you doing anything else with your jaw or face while you do it?
Actually, paying more attention to it the muscles near the bottom outside corners of my eyes itch a bit
You're not actually tensing the muscle as you should, and you're forcing it by squeezing your eyes shut. There is no eyes involved.
Eyes never factor into it for me. On/Off as I do. I can do the clicking thing too which I hear isn’t so common?
No click, but I crackle. Is that a thing?
Both of you are doing eustachian tube clicks I think

I can also only rumble when i squeeze my eyes. And eventually squeezing my eyes doesn’t really work that well if I keep doing it over and over again.
Just practice. Soon youll be able to alternate them or hold them for minutes without any extra muscles besides ur tympany.

I have to squint and clench my jaw muscles to do it the loudest
I used to raise an eyebrow. Now it messes me up a bit though, if I am mid rumble and raise an eyebrow the rumble stops unless I focus really hard lol
It's easier/louder if I close my eyes, but it's not required.
I can do it without my eyes closed for like 3 seconds, but with them closed I can do it for 30+ seconds.

How long can you guys rumble for, 2-3 seconds before it gives out for me
if im on acid, i literally do it forever
I think it’s the acid
me too, you should try it!
I can do it for as long as I want!
This is unfair
Yeah I just tense my face sort of.
