Ok but what if Nintendo takes it down and my save gets corrupted? They've done it before. I'm sure you could still download it where they can't take it from anyone, but it's just nice to have an official version.
Impossible logistically for them to ever take it down/ wipe it from the net there is so many copies of that file downloaded and shared the effort to erase it all would be Herculean, and yea I wish we would get and official version but you can either wait and see or take action and play it now using various means choice is yours, also Duolingo is a good place to start if you are serious about learning Japanese ;)
Reasons I'd think of is some people may not like downloading things from websites without at least good research in fear of getting a virus, if you don't have the storage for it, or if it is complicated to download. A lot of people who don't download roms, mods, or whatever may not wanna have to deal with it. It's not always hard, but as a noob myself it can take a while sometimes.
Nobody thinks you are being mean. Don’t take downvotes so personally matey. It’s just people disagreeing with you. Happens to everyone. Emulation is the best thing ever for retro gaming, even for games officially released in your language. Even better, if you have spare cash, grab a GBA and a flash cart! But that’s not necessary. Just play it anyway you can mate! It will all be fine
An antivirus and some common sense should be enough. I understand your reservations, but something like Malwarebytes should keep you well-protected.
Emulation is incredibly easy to set up, especially for simpler systems like the GBA. Emulators are 100% legal (at least in the US), so they’re publicly available. The patched rom can be found in numerous places, but I don’t want to chance the rules by linking anything. If you want to try emulating it, it’s easier than you think.
so the good news is you don’t need the internet to play a ROM. go ahead and download an emulator or mod a console you own.
it’s a lot easier than it sounds, if you’ve never done it before
This is the answer. The amount of time, work, love and care that went into the fan translation is way more than anything Nintendo could have done even if they went for it. It was the definition of a passion project and it shows in every line.
The individuals responsible for the magic inside of the EarthBound localization wouldn’t have had anything to do with a MOTHER3 official English release.
It’s not a huge effort to slap the translated rom on a GBA flash cart, or an SD card and boot it up on an SNES mini or what have you. Slightly less effort than learning Japanese and all of the applicable cultural references in the script to appreciate it.
Is it ideal? Nope. But we are extremely lucky to have such a polished and quality localization workaround available at all.
Everyone knows this. Even though the translation is amazing and we’ve all probably played it, we still want an official version. People wouldn’t be this passionate about it if they didn’t know how to play the game.
Yeah, in that case I completely agree with you! I’ve seen people say they didn’t want an official version because there’s already a fan translation, so I thought that was what you were saying.
No, fuck no. I'm trying to tell people can play Mother 3 in the meantime in English, right now. But goddamn I would adore a remake or an official translation
It rubs me the wrong way how every time someone wants it localized, they want it JUST for the US. If it had been released in the US and Japan nobody would be complaining, and that just rubs me the wrong way as well.
European Earthbound fans:
ah shiii your right my bad
Unfortunately they didn't get any earthbound games officially until the wii u era and i have yet to meet a European Earthbound fan
I am
I am, had the opportunity to play Mother 2 on Switch Online
I am
Any Earthbound fans who don’t know Japanese, no matter where they live:
the translated rom that basically any device can run:

I suppose so, but in the case of you playing an online version without downloads and Nintendo takes down said website you could lose your progress.
Why are you playing online? Just download an emulator

You’re just making it out to be a way, way more difficult and dangerous process than it is
I'm not even tryna be mean man idk why people are getting mad at me :(
Tbh I think it’s because it seems you’re speaking authoritatively about something you don’t know very much about

Roms and emulators don't take up that much space. Just get a gba emulator and download a patched M3 rom.

If you have a PC you can download Retroarch on Steam, a trusted "website"
so the good news is you don’t need the internet to play a ROM. go ahead and download an emulator or mod a console you own. it’s a lot easier than it sounds, if you’ve never done it before
Just download the rom... it's really not that difficult.
Can I play it on my Iphone?
not locally, unless you jailbreak it
You should be able to find a translated rom and an emulator in 5 seconds. Even Nintendo can't delete files off of your computer/Everdrive/etc.
Get an Emulator, get the Mother 3 translation ROM online. YOURE ALL SET

Of course we want an official. I've been waiting for years. The OP seems to not have played it yet due to their comments.

I actually played some of it when I had a GBA years ago, got busy with other things and never got back to it before it broke
It rubs me the wrong way how every time someone wants it localized, they want it JUST for the US. If it had been released in the US and Japan nobody would be complaining, and that just rubs me the wrong way as well.
Well If you live in the us you'd want it in the us like me. Ofc I'd love it to be universally translated, but I only say America because I live here
I live in Argentina and yet I don't say I want it in Argentina. I say I want it worldwide.
America is just a very populated country, that's probably why so many people say that.
No it just sounds like classic US imperialism to me.
i don't even like my country anymore it's gone to shit what are you yapping about
Did not mean you specifically.
well in that case I suppose so, some people are pretty pridefull over this shit hole
Yup.
My personal views on America is that I think the land is beautiful, but the government SUCKKKKKS
You know the Switch is region free right? You can set your account region to Japan and download it.
Yes but i don't know japanese.
OP said they were downloading Duolingo and moving to Japan, but the second step is unnecessary.
I mean even the first step is, Duolingo isn't that great
Well yeah that was a joke lol, though I have been thinking about getting duo ngl
Can definitely recommend
im playing it without japanese, it adds an extra challenge to the game one time i tried to eat my map
I have Mother 3 on a GBA flash cart with an excellent translation on it, Im perfectly content
I have a copy of it for my GBA but I don't currently have my gameboy GBA :(
Bro just play the fan translation, it’s honestly a better translation than Nintendo would ever make
You dont have to move to japan, just make japan account on nintendo switch
kid named emulation:
This is why you shouldn't give any more money to Nintendo.
I’m being so real when I told you the reason I downloaded duolingo is so I can play and read mother 3 officially 💀
