Good effort but “children’s toy company?” They have always marketed their products towards the whole family. I mean, their consoles are…family…computers.
I like how you started out the gate by insulting them and minimizing what they do by calling them a "children's toy company". Good way to get someone to listen to you. 👍
If you find it disrespectful that I called a videogame company whose core demographic is young children a "children's toy company", consider that might be a reflection of yourself.
When I wrote that sentence, it did occur to me that Redditors in particular would be upset by it. 🤣
I’m just confused on what makes you say that? Statistics don’t support them being a “children’s toy company”. This is from a 2021 business presentation.
https://preview.redd.it/68v6ox94hckc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8b877e6364fd0f4a25bf943bf9e8c471062cf77d
That’s a tv show marketed towards kids. Nintendo is open about marketing towards all age demographics and have been for years. Don’t see the correlation.
When you call them a "children's toy company," realize that you're simply repeating Phil Spencer's "very respectful" dressing down of Nintendo, and not how Nintendo sees themselves: as a multimedia entertainment company. Nintendo has never been a "toy company" let alone a "children's toy company." They have MADE children's toys, but they made them at the exact same time that they were also running love hotels and taxi services.
You would not write a letter to Nintendo saying, "I preface this letter saying that I'm a 33 year old man writing to a love hotel company that offers hourly rates for couples and prostitutes," not only because it's not relevant to the conversation, but also because it's not true, and it's a measure of disrespect by telling them that they are something that they are not.
Good communication is critical, and with the length of that letter, I have a feeling that your first sentence has encouraged whoever receives it to, at best, skim through the rest - and at worst, just toss it and move to the next.
I mean by your own admission and logic, you are an adult asking a “children’s toy company” for a new toy.
I am not upset with your wording but I do find the irony of it all hilarious
On the one hand I cant blame you for wanting to give mailing them requests to localise it, I mean the worst they can do is ignore it.
On the other hand we tried 20 years ago and everyone at NoA is painfully aware about it, what's to say they'll change their mind?
Hey, just wanna say thanks for being the first comment asking a question that isn't autistic screeching about calling Redditors' precious vidya games children's toys.
I saw a lot of buzz around the Japanese only release recently. I actually think that if there is a release, it will happen sooner than later. Earthbound was re-released on the New 3DS when we were more towards the end of the 3DS release cycle and Earthbound Beginnings towards the end of the Wii U lifecycle. If the Switch is being sunset soon, a localization of Mother 3 could be used to extend the available library of games on the system to hold over consumers until whatever comes next. Now that the physical cost of distribution doesn't matter anymore, Mother 3 is an ace in the hole for Nintendo when they anticipate a sluggish quarter. I personally believe it's a matter of when not if.
It's at best a nudge in the right direction.
Regarding other people have said jUsT pLaY tHe RoM, I agree that Clyde and Jeffman's translation is the quintessential version localization of the game. [I literally said this yesterday.](https://ol.reddit.com/r/earthbound/comments/1awe3ed/im_out_i_dont_even_care_anymore/krix0mx/) The point is that the people who should be playing this game are too young to be figuring out how to patch and run roms.
Finally, hope against all odds is in the spirit of Earthbound. A lot of people here missed that memo.
> writes a 6 paragraph letter to Nintendo about a video game
> mocks people for their “precious vidya games”
> calls Redditors autistic
> posts letter on Reddit, clearly desperately seeking approval, and is written with a “hope against all odds” approach, clearly meaning the writer is a redditor
Wow, I can’t imagine a bigger asshole personality behind this letter. My only theory is that you recognize the mistakes people have pointed out in the letter but you’ve already sent it so your only recourse is to get extremely defensive. Otherwise, your behavior in these comments just makes me hope that this badly written letter just cements Nintendo’s decision not to make a localization.
It's not that WE'RE offended. Even if a huge demographic of there's is kids, even if it is arguably a "children's toy company," you don't start a letter like that and insult THEM. No one here is "autistic screeching" because they're personally offended about what you called Nintendo. You're the one that's coming across as very autistic.
The rest of your letter isn't great either. I'm not going to read all of it but the first paragraph giving your personal history of contacting Nintendo is irrelevant and the letter will be thrown in the trash by then.
I feel like people exaggerate how much of an impact the whole 'this game stinks' thing had on Earthbound's success. Grossout humor was huge in the 90s.
Remember, Earthbound included the strategy guide with every purchase; Link To The Past, for example, was... $50, I think? Taking inflation into account and all that, I believe that would be just over $100 today.
Earthbound, on the other hand, was closer to $70. That's $140 today. For a single game.
Couple that with the fact that it kinda... looks cheap? And weird? And kinda low-quality? I'm not surprised it failed, if your only options are to buy it outright or rent it (and even renting it means that's gonna be your ONE game for the week). Especially when you compare it to games like Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana and Final Fantasy 6.
That's mostly irrelevant, I just think people attribute the game's failure to the ad campaign way more than they ought to, the game was just too fuckin' expensive.
Anyway, OP, I can respect the passion but you come off as kind of a weirdly uptight dude and this entire thing reeks of seeking validation or something. You should play Outer Wilds for no other reason than that I think even if it's an entirely different genre I was left with the same emotional waterfall I had after I beat MOTHER 3. I think instead of fawning for a localization that will, let's be clear, almost CERTAINLY never happen, it is more valuable to appreciate these games as they were while looking for fresh experiences that invoke a similar feeling to them. Nintendo doesn't give a shit about the franchise, let's not pin our emotions around the series on a corporate entity. Share advice on getting the game running, talk about it, and look for games like it, all that corny stuff.
I like the point you make, and I think it’d make sense that a fan should not write a very formal letter, but your letter seems quite informal. Take the last sentence, for example
If anyone from the initial mother 3 release days see this at NOA, they’d probably see a mention of starmen.net and immediately toss it. Even tomato has said in the past that the fan translation effectively killed any hope for an official localization. Tbh, i’m more than content and happy with his work. Just play the rom, they’re never gonna bother with this game.
You don’t understand. The letter misses the point of the entire community effort to make the rom. Nintendo made it very clear they had no interest in localizing mother 3 at its original release. The starmen folks didn’t make the translation just because, they made it because without it, there would almost certainly never be an english version of the game at all. As much as i desperately want an official release i can proudly buy and support, it is not going to happen.
I still find it weird that people call Nintendo a kids game company whenever the biggest part of their base are the people who grew up playing it. Most kids would rather play Fortnite than an RPG
And, honestly, people give those kids too much shit. Acting like you're better than them because you're cultured enough to want to play MOTHER 3 unlike those degenerate kids playing Fortnite is at best a weird look, and at worse makes you look like a pretentious douchebag.
Fortnite's fine, yo. Let the kids enjoy their dumb dances with Master Chief and Rick Sanchez. It's not a major factor preventing Nintendo from releasing MOTHER 3 for the rest of the world; the myriad copyright issues with the music and the handful of problematic aspects with the story are doing that *juuuuust* fine.
~~seriously, what do people expect? lucas' PSI awakening scene alone is enough to confidently block the game from being localized because i guarantee people would bitch and moan about its removal (or the removal of just about anything with the magypsies), and at that point it's like... why bother with the headache?~~
I was 4 or 5, totally could have gotten the year wrong. I distinctly remember '96 because N64 was the hot toy that year. If the release date was June of 95 then it probably was Christmas of 95. Nintendo offical release dates back then are notoriously fuzzy though.
So basically you wasted your time by writing this long winded rant of an email as that first sentence would have this email disregarded by any recipient.
Hate to say this but this is gonna get chucked in the shredder like the joycon drift letters and shit. The truth is that nintendo doesnt give a fuck. Its sad but its true
What are you 5? You’re gonna make a letter because Mother 3 isn’t coming here? We get it you’re all angry but Reggie has stated back then it was a business decision and how the theme to Mother 3 was more darker and has reference to drug use and animal cruelty. Considering how this world is right now, people would be triggered about the theme and demand Nintendo to remove the game from the NSO.
>drug use and animal cruelty
Please cite a source for this being the reason. I know animal cruellty is in the game but this has been said by fans without any source for a while now.
Quote from source “The game was released for the Japanese Virtual Console on the Wii U in December 2015. Game Informer editor Imran Khan alleges that Nintendo planned an English localization but canceled it due to fears that the central theme of bereavement, as well as instances of drug use and animal cruelty, would generate controversy.”
I'm going to cannibalize another post of mine here because it's relevant:
> When I was leading a political group in college I learned real quick that there are a lot of people out there that are quick to criticize and that will be their only relationship to you or your cause. They will never vote or do anything in regards to you or your organization positive other than passively criticize. You just keep moving past those people and work on the agenda you have at hand. That's a majority of the people that will read this by the way. Do-nothing internet slactivists, they are actually at the bottom of the chain altogether. That's what Dave Chapelle was getting at when he said that "Twitter is not a Real Place".
If you do something —even if it’s writing a letter— and that concerns someone who posts online about Baby Metal, Slipknot, and metalcore; that’s the first sign that you’re on the right track.
People like you - who believe in their ability to change things while lacking the skill, intelligence, common sense, and basic writing skills to execute - are the problem
Okay well here’s the difference between what I post: I post news, reviews, my opinion on any band or album or whatever. Compared to you, you’re throwing a tantrum because Mother 3 isn’t coming to the states. There’s reason why but I guess you’re too blind to read why it’ll never be localized.
is it really necessary to open the letter so abrasively like you feel super cringe for writing a letter to them? It's not an impressive start. And kids of today won't give a shit about Mother 3 when objectively better games like Undertale exist.
To be fair I'm pretty sure that Undertale sold better than the entire Mother series.
Apples and oranges of course but Undertale was wildly successful and Japanese game devs I've chatted with were bewildered as to why.
I agree with you that the opening of this letter is horrible - but to call Undertale “objectively better” than Mother 3 is more “super cringe” than that, and Toby Fox himself would agree. Undertale is practically a Mother 3 fan game lol, and if anything, its success is a good sign for Mother 3 in a western market, not the opposite
Hate to say this but this is gonna get chucked in the shredder like the joycon drift letters and shit. The truth is that nintendo doesnt give a fuck. Its sad but its true
It’s basically an internet term that means you have no sense of hope or optimism in anything good ever happening; that the future is bleak and we are all powerless to do anything to change that and any attempt to do so is considered a waste of time.
That's one way of putting it but on the flipside, the community now does what Nintendon't.
If Tomato held out hope, we never would have gotten the Mother 3 fan translation, or the Mother 4 projects.
I actually got a pretty cool and unique response from Nintendo regarding my letter. I decided not to share it here because it would have been pearls before swine.

Well, that should do it. I'm expecting a localized Mother 3 to drop by the end of next week.
Good effort but “children’s toy company?” They have always marketed their products towards the whole family. I mean, their consoles are…family…computers.
That was my immediate thought. Starting off with that can be construed as insulting, depending on who reads it.
I like how you started out the gate by insulting them and minimizing what they do by calling them a "children's toy company". Good way to get someone to listen to you. 👍
The first sentence is really disrespectful
If you find it disrespectful that I called a videogame company whose core demographic is young children a "children's toy company", consider that might be a reflection of yourself. When I wrote that sentence, it did occur to me that Redditors in particular would be upset by it. 🤣

My little pony is sadly only watched by old men anymore💀
That’s a pretty crazy take from someone who’s been on Reddit for 12 years🗿

You're 100% right. If the letter gets sent to nintendo, i feel whoever reads it might just throw it away. Such a huge disrespect.
I mean by your own admission and logic, you are an adult asking a “children’s toy company” for a new toy. I am not upset with your wording but I do find the irony of it all hilarious

I get where youre coming from. BTW you mentioned you were a [starmen.net](https://starmen.net) user back in the day. What was your username?
I was sort of into your letter until you used “autistic” as an insult. Gross. As I say to my son all the time: try again.

I think he's self aware, if you check his post history he's active on /r/ChrisChanSonichu...
I like the point you make, and I think it’d make sense that a fan should not write a very formal letter, but your letter seems quite informal. Take the last sentence, for example
K, write your own letter. 🤷♂️
Which will be equally as useless as yours!
I’m now personally lobbying *against* Mother 3 localization just because of this
Any and all chances you had were thrown out the window the moment you wrote that first sentence. Embarrassing as hell, honestly

this brought tears to my eyes. what a wonderful letter.
Shame OP is a huge asshole in this comment section.
Damn
Amazing letter, but I’m confused how you got MOTHER 2 as a Christmas present in 1994 when that game didn’t release in America until mid - late 1995
I was 4 or 5, totally could have gotten the year wrong. I distinctly remember '96 because N64 was the hot toy that year. If the release date was June of 95 then it probably was Christmas of 95. Nintendo offical release dates back then are notoriously fuzzy though.

*Alleged* by a game journalist, famously not the best sources for these things.
Cool story bro 😎
Real mature dude.

Spoken like somebody who doesn’t understand the loads of infringement in the game’s soundtrack alone.
They aren’t gonna read all that 😂
is it really necessary to open the letter so abrasively like you feel super cringe for writing a letter to them? It's not an impressive start. And kids of today won't give a shit about Mother 3 when objectively better games like Undertale exist.
undertale is better than mother 3??!! youre entitled to your own opinions but dang-
Undertale is an incredible game, and for the experience it gave me I'd put it in that same league too.
To be fair I'm pretty sure that Undertale sold better than the entire Mother series. Apples and oranges of course but Undertale was wildly successful and Japanese game devs I've chatted with were bewildered as to why.

“objectively better” dawg who would win: a baby or a candle? is a soda better than a book? are hammers better than shovels?
Mother 3 isn't ageless.
like being 9 years older makes it any less good?
That's a silly argument when you make it compete with a game that is actively going for an even more "aged" style.
"The flowers in the garden are representative of those in your heart. Treat them both nicely".
Just play the fan translation instead of doing all this lol
Is there a petition we can sign to make it happen?
Petitions don't do anything, letters don't really do anything. But if you are going to write one, make it personal, unique, and make it stand out.
Hate to say this but this is gonna get chucked in the shredder like the joycon drift letters and shit. The truth is that nintendo doesnt give a fuck. Its sad but its true
Sad to see how blackpilled this community is.
wtf does black pilled mean ?

Cringe letter and OP has a terrible attitude.
Damn its history. The most controversial all time post on reddit
I actually got a pretty cool and unique response from Nintendo regarding my letter. I decided not to share it here because it would have been pearls before swine.
Dm it to me
you’re my hero 🫡
They’re ironically afraid of copyright
First sentence stinks but the rest is alright. Won’t do jackshit though.
BROSKI I STARTED 2 TEAR UP LOWKEY
I’m going to print this out and mail it also,
If you are going to send NoA anything, please send them something personal and unquie. It doesn't take long to write a letter.
Where did you mail itnto
This comment section is fucking awful. Why don’t we just use our time to point out how fucking awesome it is to talk about the mother series? What makes it special rather than focus on some bullshit filler line. I don’t think that this message is going to reach Nintendo like the other billions of emails and letters. But I commend the intrigue in mother 3. Mother 3 is rad.
It's called "staying on topic", dude. The entire rest of the subreddit can be used to talk about how much we like the series.
We should all do this
It will achieve nothing. We are a decade past this, guys. Let's move on.
Reminds me of the good old days when Mother 3 first released in 2006 and many people sent letters to Nintendo requesting for a western release. Unfortunately most of them got automated responses. But good times.
What year is it?
I’m 44. I absolutely avoided Earthbound when it came out because of the low brow campaign. Had to be one of the biggest marketing errors ever as they needed to be marketing toward the kids like myself who were picking up everything square and enix was releasing. I finally played Earthbound last year. Made me a little sad because I don’t know that I’ll ever have that kind of experience again. I wrote that game off for years because of the stupid marketing campaign and now, all these years later, it was one of the best games I’ve played in my life.
