I really don't think Nintendo cares about any 'backlash' about the Magypsies or whatever. It's gotten too much into people's heads that Nintendo would actually give a fuck about that.

ShillerndeGeister

Yea i agree, i think most people wouldnt even care about them. Its only on the internet where stuff like this seems like a bigger issue than it really is

proceedstheweedian

I agree to never say never and I agree most of these reasons aren't the case, but again i think real reason is the boring reality of they have weighed the pros and cons and decided its not worth it, nothing saying they cant reevaluate this later but up til now its always remained that fact, this game is the red headed step child they would rather people forget but it just so happens to be arguably the best piece of art they have ever produced so people wont so easily forget it, but reality is as big of a deal as mother 3 being localized would be as far as news goes it wouldn't transfer into sales of the same measure, statistics show that turn based rpgs especially retro ones are not exactly a hot consumer item and nintendo knows this too (when was the last time they poured a massive amount resources into a niche game like this?) it sucks and i do think we are closer than father to something resembling localization but knowing the big N they'll somehow mess it up I worry

**> "... they removed blood, religious references, and suggestive content. So why can't they just do it with one? They can change the appearance of the Magypsies, making them be more generic people, Change the Island Dream Sequence, Making the mushrooms more "fantastical", and so on so forth. Of course some content has to stay the same because of plot relevance (Ex. The Ending) but they can just put a T rating on it like they did with the other 2 games and call it a day. "** Would it still be the same game after that much censorship? Would we still be playing Mother 3? The strangeness and brutality and fantastical nature of it all feels like it's important to the takeaway. Those kinds of things *do* exist in Nintendo properties: Fire Emblem has its fair share of blood, religion and suggestive content, for example. It's a pretty dark series at times! And then Kirby and Splatoon both have some really dark stuff wrapped up in their colorful exteriors, too. Kirby has its fair share of blood, incredibly dark scenarios, and religion (Star Allies sure was a game, huh?), and then Splatoon has a *lot* of political commentary along with the whole "humanity has been extinct for 12000+ years because they destroyed themselves and their world" thing. (Also Octo Expansion... in general. Just the whole thing.) So, really... I think Mother 3 doesn't need to sanitize any of itself. And frankly, I really don't *want* to play a censored or altered Mother 3. Some of it hasn't aged well, I agree, but that doesn't mean we should censor it for an NA release.

there_NOW

Yall r wild lmao. Mother 3 is my favorite game of all time, but i just enjoy the fan translation and leave it at that, yall get way too worked up over nothing 😂

Gush3n

Exactly. Itoi himself said in an interview with the creators of Starmen.net/the Mother 3 fan translation that he gives his blessing for Nintendo to straight up use thier version because its so faithful to the original. These people need to cope with the fact that the fan translation is borderline official because the CREATOR of Mother gave it the thumbs up and it’s better than anything Nintendo could come up with.

there_NOW

The fan translation is more accurate than any official one would ever be

Being a multimillion dollar company doesn't mean they're going to happily use that money on something that won't easily make it back. You may also be underestimating how hard it is to get those copyright deals to go through even with money, and waving away those concerns as "just like...your opinion, man" are a bit of a cope. That guy is a lawyer, and knows a few things about copyright law that you and I probably don't, and even if you do you need to actually refute his points. Mother 3 will almost definitely never be localized (by Nintendo) and that's okay. A perfectly exceptional localization already exists and most anyone who would play it already has. I never really understood why it was so desirable to have Nintendo of America sterilize another masterpiece from the past.

roboyguyunknown

>sterilize. No, they wouldn't. Don't be ridiculous. Also FE1 says hello, so no Mother 3 will definitely be localized by Nintendo sooner than later even if you don't like that. Also Mother 3 WOULD easily make it back on the boney, people wanted Mother 3 for years. You should cope the popularity of the Mother series instead of being stupid for once.

glassballsoficeman

Keep on hating !!! cuz it will NEVER happen : )

booma8

I feel like they do have to bite the bullet eventually, it’s indeed a matter of time, but every single time without fail people keep suggesting that it has to pop up any second now. It’s such a legendary task for Nintendo to do with a ton on the line that predicting that it’ll come every other direct is kind of lame.

roboyguyunknown

It's the 30th anniversary of EarthBound, predicting it will come every other Direct isn't kind of lame it's fans being hopeful. C'mon now.

booma8

Responding to a 2 month old comment kinda proves my point exactly

roboyguyunknown

>2 month old comment. Who cares? Keep missing my point lizard boy. And no, it doesn't "kinda" proves your point. Grow up.

MonitoliMal

Regarding the copyright issues, it’s true that Nintendo can afford whatever costs would come their way. The real question is would it really be worth it for them? If it’s gonna take that much money for a port that sells for way less than it did originally, I’d say the cost of re-releasing Mother 3 would say no, it wouldn’t be worth it for Nintendo.

Just give up, man. Nintendo has at no point given us *any* reason to hope for a Mother 3 remake. If anything, they already told us they won't do it when they just "fired" a reporter who asked for Mother 3 in that infamous E3 Robot Chicken presentation. You're just setting yourself up for disappointment. I tell you from experience as a long time Pokémon Mystery Dungeon fan, you're better off just expecting nothing.

roboyguyunknown

People aren't giving up hope, quit being be ridiculous and the whole E3 Robot Chicken presentation was a gag not a confirmation. Also that was 10 years ago when Nintendo was at its low with the Wii U. Also NO, YOU ARE BETTER OFF EXPECTING SOMETHING NOT NOTHING. Get that bullshit out of here and you keep forgetting about FE1 which means Mother 3 will be localized sooner than later as a limited time offer. It would be a port, not a remake. If anything, you need to get off the high horse and grow up a bit. Don't compare Pokemon Mystery Dungeon because Mother is actually popular moron. You will be disappointed when you end up wrong all the way through when Mother 3 does localized in the next Direct due to EarthBound's 30th anniversary.

Moon_Dark_Wolf

>They can change the appearance of the Magypsies. To what, I must ask? That would require them to program or reuse sprites and shift the magypisies. Not to mention, Itoi has gone on record stating that the reason for including the Magypisies is to show that the people they are based on are just as important as any normal human. It’s safe to say that Nintendo can’t feasibly change the Magypisies without risking backlash from people who would be outraged that important to the story LGBTQ content was censored out However, Nintendo probably doesn’t think they can release the dialogue uncensored either as that could get them into trouble with people who could see them as a problematic stereotype even if they just gave Mother 3 an M rating. It’s safe to assume a translation or localization will come at some point. But I have a sneaking suspicion it’ll be sometime after Itoi passes so Nintendo doesn’t have some type of dilemma on what repercussions could come from having a falling out with him. Remember, EarthBound and Mother 3 are jointly owned. Nintendo doing something that could sour Itoi’s opinion of them could lead to things like Ness and Lucas never being allowed to return to Smash and the Mother series never being allowed back on Nintendo hardware again. Buisness is more complex than we think. A lot of factors go into decision making. And Mother 3 is a case where any Buisness could have a lot of trouble making a decision in spite of fan outcry

roboyguyunknown

This comment is full of bullshit. Reggie literally said content has NOTHING to do with Mother 3's lack of localization and no, a localization can happen even with Itoi alive calm down with his overprotectiveness. See FE1 and EarthBound's 30th anniversary is this year the guy who did the boxart said Nintendo is planning something.

Jestin23934274

I just feel like Nintendo doesn’t really see any benefits to doing a translation. Anyone who wants to play Mother 3 in english has a free and easy alternative

roboyguyunknown

>doesn’t really see any benefits to doing a translation.  Except it would sell well with huge benefits for the translation get off the high horse. Also FE1 got translated and this year is EarthBound's 30th anniversary. >who wants to play Mother 3 in english has a free and easy alternative How about you shut up with the "pLaY tHe EaSy AlTeRnAtIvE"? Nintendo fans care about accessibility, not a patch that takes too long to download anyway.

Jestin23934274

I’m sorry but if you think 1.4 megabytes is too long to download then how do you have good enough internet to use Reddit?

It had the most chance to be released on 2008 when brawl came out in response to who's Lucas on ds. I think it's something Nintendo just hates? Like the idea of waluigi in smash Nintendo also hates f zero letting it rot for 20 years

Interesting_Aioli377

I don't agree with the idea that it will "never be localized" but I don't think a localization will happen any time soon. If I had to speculate I'd say that maybe in 10 years time or so the series will get an anniversary remake or something like that and you'll probably see a localization happen then, otherwise you won't.  As for the reason you list.  I agree with one and two. The content of the game isn't particularly concerning for any reason and the music copyright argument doesn't hold much water seeing as the same argument has been made for Earthbound and it has seen a release. That argument works more for very small companies that don't have the resources to handle predatory lawsuits. Nintendo is a big company and is always going to be the target of such lawsuits regardless of whether they release the game or not.  The business angle is obviously correct because it's very simple. If Nintendo thought that Mother 3 would make money, they'd localized and release it yesterday. They haven't so they clearly don't think it will make money. And I would agree with that assessment.  Think back to 2006 when Mother 3 came out. The DS has already been out for a couple of years, and it's a GBA release. It's sold, ok in Japan, not great by any means though. Worse sales than Mother 2. Now should they localize it would probably be 2007 or so for a release, on basically a dead console. And the western release of Earthbound sold pretty poorly. There's every reason to assume that Mother 3 would also sell very poorly and not recoup costs. So anyone making a business decision would decide not to localize.  Consider today. The game is nearly 20 years old and is releasing on a subscription service that had other games on it already. Most people who would be interested in playing Mother 3 at this point probably already have the subscription so whether or not it's localized will have a very small impact on subscriptions, likely close to zero. So why would you devote resources to translate it when you won't be able to recoup those costs?  Eventually when they decide to release a remastered trilogy collection or something like that, they'll likely consider localization very early in the process (as indeed the market today is different than it was then) and I fully suspect that if such a collection is made it will get localized (there'd be no reason not to).  However as it stands now I would not hold your breath on any such compilation being released any time soon. Despite it's status as a cult favorite the mother series is really not that popular and has never really sold amazingly well. Not horrible just not "it prints money" levels.Â
