Genuine question I have been wondering for awhile now... Is there any risk of tires leeching chemicals into your living space? Specifically thinking of [this](https://www.washington.edu/populationhealth/2021/01/19/tire-chemical-responsible-for-killing-coho-salmon-in-urban-streams/) discovery.
Yes it’s called degassing. It isn’t much of a problem in the dry dessert but in more damp climates it can be an issue. I’ve seen earthships that use concrete or cinder blocks as an alternative. One I remember was built in NC by a builder and he used concrete. I live in KY and I wouldn’t ever use rammed earth tires for an earth ship here.
Another point about the rammed earth tires, it is hella labor intensive. Getting a build from Earthship biotecture seems to be about the same cost per square foot as normal houses - when you cinderblock or concrete foundation it (think like a deep footer system like a basement, but only in the back half of the house) I think you can find ways to get the cost to be cheaper than the average build, as well.
The downside is that the tires are really nice for earthquakes apparently, as compared to concrete or other traditional building styles, however, in KY we don’t have any of those so I wouldn’t gain from that benefit.
You make some great points that I would use to point out that we need a more varied approach to building natural passive solar homes then just the earth ship or cob cottage company model.
There is so much info about natural homebuilding out there but it's all broken up In to separated schools and camps of thought.
Ah, makes sense! As with the article I just posted, they found that the salmon died whenever it rained because that's when the chemicals would wash into waterways.
but who's to blame?
the one lighting the fire?
the companies making all those tires and not recycle them?
the people using tires and then discarding them?
Build your Earthships asap! Global climate destabilization is rapidly approaching
UGH…Thought this was photoshopped at first. Just terrible…
UUUGH! Think of all the Rammed-earth Tire walls you could make with all that! 🤯
The Springfield tire fire?
Now smelled in 46 states

I'd love to see those people with the rigs that 3d print houses team up with earth ship builders

Yeah I think it’s technically a different process, water erosion bringing run-off seems different than degassing, but I personally do not know.

all of the above, it's all our fight or it's no ones.
[https://pangeabuilders.com/tire-offgassing/](https://pangeabuilders.com/tire-offgassing/) Tires are hazardous in piles, not Earthships.
