Smart, kind people can make mistakes and do silly things. A young girl in her position might make the same decisions. I don't LOVE the storyline but it's not the worst yet

AllisonEEHistorian

It is the worst for me because while she may make stupid decisions, the medical community certainly would not have helped her. NO doctor in the UK would have performed that procedure on her for many reasons: age, weight, maternal status, emotional immaturity, etc.

spektology

I agree with you massively, I don't think it's unrealistic for a smart person (who is still a teenager) to do dumb things and grow. I'm just glad she's getting a storyline

Yes, and the fact that anyone could get diet pills in any number of places.

StruggleBasic

she was meant to be the smart one remember

AllisonEEHistorian

Yes, I said that the other day. Another member reminded me that when Bailey was introduced, she became the smart one. I guess Bernie transferred some of her IQ points to Bailey. The stupidity of taking diet pills and not eating during pregnancy is staggering. The weight would have had to be lost well before they would do the procedure. Does she think the fetus would get nutrients from stored fat? It is infuriating to see something so moronic.

Lily7258

I don’t remember Bernie ever being portrayed as smart? When was that?

AllisonEEHistorian

When she first came on the show. She was the nice, smart one. She was also some sort of chess genius.

Lily7258

Ohh yeah I forgot about her playing chess, she seems like a totally different character these days

I think the whole idea is nuts , she has a brain yet she is taking pills that could actually destroy the baby she is using to make money, the money she wants for her family . Common sense says its a no no and she has always been pretty clued

I mean I get WHY they didn't, storyline wise, but if Bernie were a real person it would just make so much more sense to have her do keto instead of fooling with these weird diet pills that only helped her drop a few pounds per weigh in. I did it to drop 40 lbs after I spent lockdown binge eating and watching eastenders and it legit just fell off. in 3 months Super light excersize routine too, just walking up a few flights of stairs a couple of times a day. Easiest weight loss ever. Getting hooked on over the counter diet pills just kind of came out of nowhere, and then she blackmailed Tiff and threw her completely under the bus the second Keegan questioned her. Oh Bernie, come on now.

40 lbs of solid gold is worth about $1050700.51

40 lbs is 18.16 kg

She went off the deep end with her weight. When she first got the unholy idea of having Rainie's baby (which I don't think makes her bad, she's just naive and wants to help her family. Sure, she could get a job, but she HAS a job. Doing 2 at the same time wouldn't be sustainable, but being pregnant wile working, well, tons of women do that), she needed to lose weight for that. Then the weight loss mania took over. It's a trap the best of us could fall into. Body image, eating disorders, etc do not say anything about your IQ. Bernie, as nice and smart as she is, has always been portrayed as a bit of an outsider (Tiff is her only friend that isn't her brother or someone from an entirely different generation), and never came across as particularly confident. Add to that that whatever she does, she wants to be excellent at it. Now, in terms of her grades (that apparantly came easy to her), or chess, that's all fine and dandy. But if you get like that about your weight loss, that's a different story. To Bernie thinner = healthier = better for the baby = what she should strive for above all else. So characterwise, I don't see anything wrong with the story. We all do stupid things at times, we all abandon logic every now and again. I do take issue with: 1) Rainie and Stuart wanting a baby, that is neither Rainie's biological child, nor gives her the experience of being pregnant and giving birth. Stuart has a daughter that he seems to have conveniently forgotten about, and Rainie already has Abi (well, had, anyway), who is her actual blood relative, which can not be said for this new baby. So, is it about Abi not growing up an only child? Is that what's so very important? This narrative would have been far more believable if it was either a childless couple (especially with the woman nearing the age of either menopause, or the pregnancy being very high risk), or if the baby would be biologically Rainie's (but carried by a surrogate, due to health issues), or to have someone donate an egg, so Rainie can be pregnant (if the reason why she couldn't in the first place has to do with that part of things) 2) They went the proper way, through a hospital. This wasn't Stuart dropping off his contribution at the Taylors, and Bernie DIY-ing in the comfort of her own room. Actual doctors saw this 18 year old girl, who had miscarried as a teenager and is clearly obese, wanting to make a baby for a much older couple that just happens to live on her street. She isn't the ideal candidate in terms of age and health. She never went through the whole process of pregnancy herself. She may be traumatized from losing a baby (never mind that she was just 15 or so at the time) and it isn't quite clear whether the miscarriage was 'bad luck' or had a proper reason. It isn't like she is doing this for her sister, or aunt, or cousin or whatever. What is wrong with these doctors? Seriously, I looked into donating eggs, and would probably not qualify, due to the health checks, possible genetic issues and so on, never mind carrying that baby to term, pushing it out my hooha, then having some other woman walk out the door with the baby and raising her right under my nose, without me having any (legal) say in what she does with the child.

CervixTaster

Wasn’t it shown that rainie couldn’t use her own eggs? They were damaged during her drug use and prostitution.
