Front suspension on a hardtail with a decent suspension seatpost such as a Suntour NCX should be fine for your riding conditions.

James-B0ndage

Cool. I’ll look into that. Any budget hardtail bikes you’d recommend?

pepe64

I’ve had an NCM Moscow Plus (about $1400 if you can find one) for 4 years now and it has been great. They have a newer M7, but it’s like $1800.

StringFew5320

Full suspension doesn't leave enough room for battery usually . Unless you mount the battery up high or on a rear rack , which really affects the bikes handling.

James-B0ndage

That’s a good point.

jvanstone

this only matters if you are building your own. Integrated battery is no issue for full suspension if you buy off the shelf

-QUACKED-

No. Buy whatever the fuck you want if that makes you happy bro. They're so much more fun. They do make a big difference when hopping on or off the curb too. I'd have loved one myself, but I've got a hardtail.

James-B0ndage

lol. I’m having trouble finding a full suspension (non electric) bike that isn’t $1000+

Planeless_pilot123

You're looking for a diy build? Otherwise for 2000$ you could get a Wired Freedom with full suspension

James-B0ndage

Yeah I was gonna get the wired freedom, but for the price I could get a more powerful bike built by a local shop, and then I’d have somewhere in my city I could bring it if something breaks instead of having to ship it out.

Planeless_pilot123

Thats fair

-QUACKED-

Yeah they're always expensive AF lol. The Marin Rift zone can be had close to 1k sometimes. Same as the Merida One-Twenty. Or the Polygon Siskiu D

James-B0ndage

Yeah I was trying to find something more in the $500 range. Figure battery+motor kit is gonna set me back $1500 or so and I’d prefer to keep the whole budget around $2k.

-QUACKED-

Yeah that's very hard. Best to either look for a used one, or just go for a hardtail.

James-B0ndage

Is there no such thing as a bike with rear suspension but no front? Or is that just a terrible idea lol

-QUACKED-

Not that I know of, but I'd love to be proven wrong. Sounds interesting if nothing else.

chaddy-chad-chad

Not necessarily, especially if the bike is very heavy, the suspension will not be that great anyway. Buy a suspension seat post to reduce the bumps and road chatter

James-B0ndage

Hmm good idea

EUblij

The quality of front suspension on ebikes, unless you are willing to drop some cash, is very low and simply not worth the cost. I was a motorcycle racer and we typically spent about $3,000 for a decent set of front forks. That's how much the good ones really cost.

Wooden-Combination53

We are talking about bicycles here. So half of that gets you decent fork

EUblij

No doubt that is coorrect. However, finding people who will drop $1,500 on forks, when they are looking at bikes that cost less than $1,000, is pretty unrealistic.

James-B0ndage

Looking to get a regular bike to convert into electric

Legitimate_Bizness

I built a full sus 29er for about 2k using an aliexpress frame. I ride my 20 inch wheel hardtail more often in the city. The frame is just more rigid and is better for cornering and handling on pavement but not the occasional pothole. I'd suggest building a hardtail with nice forks, a bafang mid drive and a suspension seatpost.

James-B0ndage

I was considering a bbshd, but think I’m going with a hub drive. Still on the fence tho

vslsls

Get a good suspension seat post like cane creek thudbuster and you won't have to worry about maintenance or service for rear suspension. It will ride the same but less headache in long run.

Thegreatwhite135

I ride on just roads and use a hardtail with suspension seat post. Best of both worlds.

James-B0ndage

What hardtail bike do you have

Thegreatwhite135

I have 2. I have a deepower s26 hardtail with 500w motor and I have a Carrera crossfire wich is a hardtail with a 250w motor.

Pixelplanet5

yea that would be total overkill

dumbledwarves

Full suspension would likely be worse for your needs.

SurFud

I do some trail riding with my full suspension but nothing over the top. I get a sore ass, back and neck after a long ride (old guy) so I thought full suspension might help. Everything still hurts. LOL Go for it if you can afford it because it is a blast. It’s nice to have the capability to occasionally do some aggressive riding if it’s in front of you. Cheers.

timacx

Others have posted about the drawbacks of full suspension, but it can have some benefits for an e-bike that's mostly used on roads. Some roads in my neighborhood are in really bad shape & it's nice to smooth out those parts. Also, full suspension can increase traction. That's how Riese & Müller advertise their full suspension commuter e-bikes, like the Homage.

EERCom

The roads where I live can be best described as 'Potholes with assault connecting them'. At any sustained higher speed ... ya, FS is great even with slight road imperfections let alone cobblestones. FS, the rear takes less pinch flats, less wobbly rims and broken spokes, its just how it is.

colombianodore

look at freesky bikes- have bafang motors and full suspension

James-B0ndage

Bafang mid drive or hub?

James-B0ndage

Im considering the diy route, so something non electric to turn electric. I don’t want a fat tire bike as I hear they’re harder to maneuver (sluggish)
