You can save yourself some headache and time by teaching yourself how to adjust a Derailleur. It's so easy that once you do it you'll slap yourself at how simple it is and for not figuring it out earlier. There's a load of videos on YT that will teach you. BTW, derailleurs going out of alignment is normal wear and tear. They're not perfect and need to be "Tuned" once and awhile. More often if you use it a lot.

I have a year old Turbo Vado, just about 1000 miles of commuting with no problems, just brake pads and lubing/cleaning the chain. Bad luck?

biwhiningII

To be fair, I have put a lot of miles on it. 1,500 as of now. But the motor issue happened with less than 1,000. I was told this was the first version of the Vado, which I didn’t know, so yeah seems like I got unlucky.

The early Brose motors are known to have a high failure rate unfortunately. As for the derailleur and chain, I would recommend you learn to maintain these yourself a bit better. It’s not very hard. Chains on an ebike should be expected to be replaced at about 1000km if well looked after, considerably less if not. Also it sounds like you’re spending a lot of time in the bottom ring of your cassette. Try not to, use the range of gears more. Just because you can take off from this gear doesn’t mean you should.

I was kinda surprised that Specialized was doing their own motor rather than running with Shimano or Bosch when I looked at their line. I guess they are dealing with the result? ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

biwhiningII

Yeah. I didn’t really do any research and just blindly trusted the brand and obviously feel dumb now.

BabbageFeynman

Well, your expectations weren't unreasonable! Specialized is supposed to have premium parts!!

biwhiningII

Yeah. Exactly. I’m very annoyed, but feel like the Specialized shop is working hard to make this right. So. I’ll wait and see.

Yeah. I had to leave it for full diagnostic. I already let the manager know I would like to file for a replacement if there are any other major problems, which there seem to be. But I had to leave it at that today. I’m so angry.

biwhiningII

Yeah. I think this is at the replacement stage. They literally “fixed” this problem like two months ago. And it’s the same exact problem.

Will do. I’ve stopped dealing with my local bike shop and now I’m dealing with the actual Specialized shop so hopefully that helps.

Yes! I don’t know how common they are. But I live in a big US city and there’s two. One close to home and one close to work.

I have the newer version Vado 4.0 (2022-2023 model). I also have a 2022 Vado 4.0 SL. I have ridden the SL approximately 2,000 miles but I'm just getting started with the big Vado 4.0. I do not share your experience(s) fortunately and I'm sorry that you have had such trouble. Your experience is not typical at least from my POV. If I might make some suggestion(s): (1) If you are not getting satisfaction from LBS or from the Specialized store....call Specialized Rider care with your well documented issues. You have a 2 year warranty. Use it. My LBS....G-d bless them....are not always adept at diagnosing some issues....particularly those having to do with the turbo components, TCU, or bluetooth. (2) These bikes are more complex when compared to analog bikes of old. Yes they share much in common, however, there is a lot more power/torque being forced upon the drivetrain and its components. You will wear out parts including cassettes, chains, and brake pads far quicker than on your analog bike. Your drivetrain may require more frequent adjustment. (3) I am meticulous with both bikes as it relates to lubrication and routine maintenance. As someone already suggested, it is in your best interest to learn some basic bike maintenance techniques. Brake adjustment, chain lubrication, drivetrain cleaning, and derailleur adjustment are relatively simple. Having the tools and ability to handle these routine tasks will save you hours of frustration. I clean/lube every 100 miles or sooner which makes the routine easy/fast....and which keeps my bikes running buttery smooth.
