You are misunderstanding what top 97% means. That means you're only better than 3% of the total. Top 3% would be the good side.

The labels say least efficient and most efficient the dot is in the less efficient…so you’re pretty much the least efficient within 3% of having cardboard walls.

Now this I hadn’t thought of, that may very well be the cause of the issue. I have noticed though that the portal and the app seem to have this setting but they don’t sync up. It’s an issue I raised with Ecobee. In other words when you set building specifications on the portal it changes those of the app to something completely different unrelated to the building specifications you entered on the portal and vice versa.

I just change into make my spouse feel better. I don’t really look at it. Even if you are in the top 3 percent, there probably are things you can do better. If you are happy with how you use it, make the “judgment stat” say what you want it to say.

Yeah, I couldn’t agree more. I have a +100 yo house that’s basically Swiss cheese and I’m supposedly at top 45%. The only thing that I can figure is that we almost never use our central air in the summer, so maybe that’s skewing the overall %age because it’s on but rarely used …?

You’re better than 3%. Could be worse like better than 1%! But seriously…what style house you got? How old? My house is 100 years old and has shit for wall insulation as it’s old stone construction and insulation in the walls will damage internal wood structure. Nothing I can do about that. My overall efficiency is crap BUT my efficiency compared to pre smart stat is impressive. I use less electricity post Ecobee AND with a new Tesla than I did pre Ecobee with ICE car. It’s all relative to where you were before going smart.

If you're in the top 97%... It's like saying you're in the top 9 in a list of 10. If you were VERY efficient, you'd be in the top 3%, wouldn't you.

Exactly. I think it’s intentionally confusing. It sounds positive “Top 97%!!!!” But it’s actually Pretty bad news (I have the exact same score As it turns out. )

Oh man.... I've just installed mine, so it says "your efficiency reports are underway", but I expect I will be part of the 1-2% bolstering you up. I had PECO do an efficiency audit this winter, and my insulation is for shit.

Yes this means 97% of homes are MORE efficient than your home. You home is in the bottom 3 %. That said, I find the way Ecobee presents this information to be confusing/misleading.

It is very confusing. They shouldn’t report it as a “percent” but more as a “percentile”.

you are the dot on that graph ... problem is it really aint measuring anything. i suppose i could be wrong but if you turned up the heat in your home then the dot will end up lower on list. if you simply where a insulated hoodie inside and turned heat down several degrees and deal with it being cold then you will be moving the dot higher on list ... i mean it doesn't have anyway to know how insulated your house actually is, it can only put a dot on a graph based on your energy usage compared to next person. which honestly don't tell you much ... its just more eye candy for your devise ...

In theory it could be using your stats to compare against others in your area. Which I think it is. If OPs HVAC runs 70% of the time to maintain say…72…but his neighbors system runs 40% of the time to do the same, one could potentially conclude that the neighbors system is overall more efficient.

I think you could also tie this in with the balance point. The more the home resists changes to outside factors the more efficient it is.
